WELL IT’S HARD to believe that three years have flown by and we find ourselves days away from the 2020 International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE), March 10–14 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in conjunction with CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Of course, this is our show—the largest North American exhibition bringing together the fluid power, power transmission and motion control industries, with over 405 exhibitors. At the last show in 2017, approximately 130,000 people attended. There will be plenty of educational opportunities, with 21 technical sessions specifically focusing on our technology, as well as four half-day college-style classes (see page x). In addition, there will be lunch-hour sessions, and three of the days will showcase the latest fluid power research being performed at U.S. universities and in our national laboratories. A first for IFPE this year will be a hosted networking reception for executives and engineers spanning the entire IFPE show floor on Wednesday, March 11, 4–6 p.m. The event will feature networking, free food, drinks, and Vegas-style entertainment. Many exhibitors plan to extend their booth hours this day. We understand that special thanks are due to Bosch Rexroth, Comer Industries, DANA, Danfoss, Eaton, Nachi, HAWE Hydraulik, Poclain Hydraulics and Sun Hydraulics for sponsoring the event. TURNING CYLINDER FAILURE INTO REAL VALUE 10 key factors in selecting a repair facility

When you have cylinder failure, you must decide whether to buy new or repair. The benefits of repairing may include shorter lead times, significant cost savings over new cylinders, and in many cases the ability to identify the causes of the failure. Hydraulic failure can occur through lack of adequate maintenance and damage. The results can be expensive and, even worse, cause long lasting damage and even injury. Diagnosing hydraulic failure is essential to establish what remedial or other action needs to be taken.

SAVE BY REPAIR Breakdowns can occur anytime. They rob you of valuable production time and profit. Repairing a cylinder can save approximately 40% to 50% the cost of new. Although a large portion of the savings comes as a direct result of using existing parts in the repair process, this will not compromise the quality or performance of a repaired cylinder. 12

SAVE WITH INVESTIGATIVE INFORMATION Cylinders sent in for repair receive a thorough inspection at the start of the repair process. During this phase, the technicians check for any stress that may have been placed on the unit from excessive side loads, improper mounting, fluid contamination, or defective seals. The inspection enables the technicians to determine the possible causes of the failure. The information gathered during the inspection may help you make adjustments and correct issues with your related equipment, extending the life of your cylinders. Simply purchasing new cylinders may not address the issues that can lead to repeat failure of the new product.

QUALITY CONTROL AND TESTING An important part of quality control is testing every repaired cylinder. A standard testing procedure ensures that the cylinder will be ready for immediate use when it leaves the facility. A repair or refurbishing goal is to return rebuilt equipment to its original specifications or better.

HERE IS A LIST OF THE TOP 10 FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN DETERMINING WHICH REPAIR COMPANY TO USE: Do they have reliable service and good customer support? Do they have experience working on cylinders from various manufacturers? After the initial inspection, do they provide feedback on the possible causes of the failure? Do they use OEM-equivalent or better components in their repairs? Do they have adequate in-house machining capabilities? Are the repaired cylinders tested? Are their quotes competitive? What is the typical turnaround time on a cylinder repair? Do they offer rapid-response delivery when needed? What kind of warranty do they offer on cylinder repairs?

Cylinder wear and tear varies per industry. There are many good large and small service and repair companies that may meet the requirements of on-location system service and maintenance. However, it may be more suitable on some projects to send the outdated or defective component to a central repair facility. Urgency is often a factor, and the cost of being down a piece of equipment is also key. Here are a few examples of both on-location and off-site repair facility projects.

MINING A large mining operation kept sending back cylinders for repair; they were breaking cylinder rods every five to six weeks. Their repair facility repaired the cylinders but took it one step further: they looked at the mine’s systems on location and suggested some equipment changes. Much of the equipment was 60 to 70 years old. After assessing the situation, a manifold block that would control the load instead of bouncing the chutes was recommended. The mine chose a service facility that could help it upgrade to newer technologies.

FOOD PROCESSING & PACKAGING A large food processing operation with three plants required maintenance to repair and refurbish its central hydraulic system, which ran the plant conveyors. However, the firm lacked enough mechanics and technicians to do maintenance on such a scale. The outsourced, on-location project took three to four weeks to complete. It involved servicing and replacing all the hydraulic valves, filtration elements, and total service on 14 electric

pumps and motors. The equipment was old, and the suppliers that still manufactured the components for this system were not considered a good fit for the project. While spending ample time at one of the plants, it was discovered that a more superior cylinder manufacturer with a special rod material suitable for the application would be a solution for the short life cycle of their existing cylinders. This chance encounter resulted in an upgrade to a better cylinder and service contract.

Industrial parts manufacturers provide performance data for components to offer the user an understanding of its capabilities. At times there can be a laundry list of specifications, so it is important to identify which criteria impact the output of the system to ensure a good fit. In vacuum, the vacuum level and volumetric flow rate are the two key factors. V acuum State

Before we discuss vacuum performance, we must first understand the state of vacuum. Vacuum is a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure in a known volume. There are a few key takeaways from this definition. First, vacuum is a pressure that can be measured in common compressed air units such as psi, bar, or kPa. However, there are pressure measurements specific to vacuum; these will be discussed later in the article. Second, vacuum pressure is lower than atmospheric. This is important because atmospheric pressure controls the datum point of vacuum as well as the available pressure the vacuum has to offer. Finally, a defined known volume is used to determine a vacuum state. This does not mean it has to be a closed system but rather a specific space in which vacuum can be considered and measured.

Figure 1 compares vacuum measurement scales. Note that the “Hg and kPa(%) are differential scales that start at zero, which is actually atmospheric pressure, whereas the Torr and mbar(a) peak at atmospheric pressure and reach zero at absolute pressure. The scale of “Hg is useful for applications in which the pressure differential is important, such as vacuum cup gripping. The vacuum pressure difference from atmospheric pressure determines the gripping force of the cups. On the other hand, the Torr scale is a more appropriate measurement in vacuum sealing for food packaging applications , where the importance is understanding how much air is remaining in the system instead of how much was removed. Both scales measure vacuum though the datum points are different. It is necessary to have both scales for accuracy because atmospheric pressure is inconsistent and always changing.

V acuum Level

Vacuum level is essentially a synonym for vacuum pressure. Vacuum level refers to the numerical measurement of vacuum pressure in a system using a unit of measurement scale. Vacuum levels quantify how much lower the pressure is than the atmospheric pressure and, in some instances, how close the pressure is to absolute pressure (zero). Absolute pressure is reached when every particle of gas (air) and other pressure substances are removed from a volume. This is where the term “in a vacuum” comes from in physics when theorizing with zero air resistance. Let’s talk numbers. Our definition of vacuum states that atmospheric pressure is the datum point. Earth’s atmospheric pressure is the pressure exerted by the “weight” of the air in the atmosphere. Although atmospheric pressure changes with factors such as altitude, weather, and geographic location, the mean value is approximately 14.7psi at sea level. We can convert 14.7psi to units of measurement that are all equal in absolute value: 29.92”Hg, 760Torr (mmHg), 1013mbar, 101.3kPa. 16

The most common tool to measure vacuum levels are gauges, which often use “Hg units, though -kPa and mbar(a) are popular as well. Digital sensors are also used, usually when vacuum is tied into other automation or PLC needs.

Volumetric F low Rate

Volumetric flow rate, often referred to simply as flow, is the volume of fluid that passes per unit of time. Vacuum flow determines the volume of air that can be moved over time, which translates to how quickly air can be suctioned. Common units of measurement for flow rates include cubic feet per minute (CFM), liters per minute, and gallons per minute, to name a few. There are many more, but unlike vacuum levels, flow units can be interchanged by their associated multipliers, similar to millimeters, inches, feet, meters, and so forth. Understanding flow ratings and pump curves is important in predicting system performance. Most often, manufacturers provide a single flow rating for vacuum generation units. If we consider the flow units of CFM, generally the published numerical value from a manufacturer is the standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM) rating of the pump, which is also the maximum amount of flow the pump can produce. The SCFM rating of the vacuum pump refers to full open flow at room temperature and atmospheric pressure (zero vacuum). However, the pump SCFM rating is usually not what the vacuum system truly experiences because the conditions change at the point of use for many vacuum systems. Flow ratings that are not encompassed by standard conditions are described as actual cubic feet per minute (ACFM). This is where the pump curves are introduced for a clearer interpretation of how well a pump will function under ACFM or non-standard full flow conditions.

Figure 2 measures the vacuum level and flow of two pump curves. One pump curve maintains higher ACFM than the other and therefore offers higher actual flow capacity. Although both pumps have the same SCFM ratings, this graph demonstrates different ACFM ratings at various vacuum levels. The ACFM ratings can be crucial in many applications. If a system requires a minimum of 80CFM at 10”Hg, it may sound like a 100SCFM pump would be adequate. However, as we learned from Figure 2, the ACFM rating may be less than 80CFM at 10”Hg, as demonstrated by the red vertical line. Pump performance curves are usually available from the manufacturer and should be studied if flow is a contributing factor as the vacuum level increases. Measuring devices such as flow meters can be used to determine flow ratings in a system. The latest models use digital readouts, though simplified dial reads are available too. It is important to note that the standard and actual CFM unit ratings were used as an example. The same concept applies to all other units of volumetric flow rates. 18

F low & V acuum Level Relationship

Figure 2 shows that flow and vacuum level share a relationship. Let’s use real-life examples to visualize and better understand how the two affect each other. Figure 3 shows two identical systems of a vacuum pump connected to a vacuum cup sealing against a smooth flat surface. We can consider this a closed system because the vacuum cup provides a “perfect” seal against the product surface. System 2 uses a 3CFM vacuum pump while system 1 generates 1CFM, but both pumps have an equal maximum vacuum level of 25”Hg. We will consider both pump types to be the same, so their performance curves are comparable in pattern. Because these are closed systems, both pumps will reach their maximum vacuum levels of 25”Hg. However, since system 2 provides more flow, the evacuation time to reach 25”Hg will be faster than system 1. That said, if the goal is to reach 25”Hg, both pumps will be successful. If the 1CFM pump does not reach 25”Hg fast enough, the 3CFM pump would WWW.FLUIDPOWERJOURNAL.COM • WWW.IFPS.ORG


be a better fit. But a pump offering more than 3CFM would be needed if it does not reach its desired vacuum level in a timely manner. For our next example, let’s consider systems similar to figure 3, but instead the vacuum cups are sealing against an uneven rippled surface, such as corrugated cardboard. We will refer to these as system 3 and system 4 shown in Figure 4. We can no longer consider this a closed system because the cups are not creating a “perfect” seal against the surface, and therefore air is bleeding into the vacuum system. This is commonly known as air/vacuum leakage. Since system 4 generates more flow, it is capable of compensating for more leakage compared to system 3. The higher flowing vacuum pump is removing more air at a faster rate, so it can better overcome the leakage of air bleeding into the system through the imperfect seal of the cups. This results in a higher final vacuum level in system 4. Depending on the system design, it is possible that a pump may not have enough flow to overcome leakage. In that case, selecting a larger flowing pump to overcome the leakage flow would help generate a vacuum level. Now we will consider an application with more obvious open flow features. Figure 5 shows two identical vacuum tank systems using identical vacuum pumps. The difference between the two is the size of the vacuum entry ports of the tanks. System 5 is capable of generating a vacuum level of 10”Hg because the tank entry port is small enough that the flow is restricted at the tank inlet and the pump is able to compensate for the leakage to generate a vacuum level. On the contrary, system 6 has equal-sized inlet and outlet ports, so the flow in and out of the tank are about equal. This does not allow a vacuum to be created, so the vacuum level inside the tank is zero. This example is relevant to applications such as centralized vacuum systems, vacuum conveying, and leak testing. Conclusion

This article covered key performance characteristics in a vacuum system – vacuum level and volumetric flow rate. Each were defined on their own and then tied together using realistic application examples. The content enclosed is meant to be an opinion educational guide to vacuum. All numbers and examples have been arbitrarily chosen.

Presented by: Bruce Riley TOPIC 2: Contamination Control and Clean Hydraulic House Assembly Procedures. PART 1 We have found a general lack of understanding with the majority of hydraulic hose and tube fabricators for the need to produce and supply cleaned and capped hose and tube assemblies. We start the presentation by educating our audience on the cost of contamination to the end customer, fabricator and equipment manufacturer. We show the cause and effect that contamination has on a hydraulic system so the audience fully understands the need for a clean hydraulic system and the importance of cleaning and capping hose and tube assemblies. PART 2 Each step of the hose fabrication process is discussed in detail. We show where the contamination is created, how to minimize or avoid the creation of the contamination and how to efficiently remove the created contamination. We explain the importance of capping the cleaned assemblies and then present independent test reports to show the results of different cleaning methods.

FRIDAY, MARCH 13 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CLEANLINESS REQUIREMENTS FOR HYDRAULICS Bill Bars Beckman Coulter Maintenance operators for aerospace, oil and gas, heavy equipment, and other industries that rely on hydraulics have leaned heavily on Liquid Particle Counting in their daily battle of effectively maintaining their equipment to maximize up-time and performance. Over 90% of catastrophic failures are the result of abrasive internal wear that can cause these critical systems to fail. Part of the role that hydraulic fluids play is lubrication reducing friction and abrasive wear. Determining an appropriate cleanliness specification for your equipment fluids can be accomplished using Liquid Particle Counters that appropriately calibrated and capable of reporting industry recognized and appropriate cleanliness codes, i.e. ISO 4406, SAE AS4059, etc. Some industries have already developed effective SOPs and cleanliness specs and these are easily adapted using Particle Counters. Developing an effective predictive maintenance protocol utilizing Liquid Particle Counting cleanliness codes to detect problems early have proven to be a vital contributor to maximizing equipment life and up-time.

Husco designed and tested a turn key subsystem to allow the digital control of any pilot operated machine, new or existing, the test vehicle was a 21T excavator. 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM SYSTEM SIMPLIFICATION WITH MULTI-SERVICE DIGITAL DISPLACEMENT PUMPS Chris Williamson Senior Systems Engineer at Danfoss Power Solutions Digital displacement pumps (DDP) are a new type of hydraulic piston pump where each piston is controlled individually with on/off valves. In addition to higher efficiency than conventional pumps, DDP offers unique opportunities for simplifying hydraulic systems. Because each piston is controlled independently, one DDP may have multiple independent outlet services – essentially two or three pumps in one. Combined with switching valves, a multi-service DDP may dynamically change the connections between pump outlets and machine functions. Multi-service capability unlocks new system architectures, more intelligent machine control and sizable improvements in performance and efficiency. This presentation describes hydraulic system concepts developed by Danfoss Power Solutions for off-highway vehicles. Main relief valve keeps coming apart in manifold.

The machines load a tub on a lift that would rotate up and tip, dumping meat into a grinder. The processor had problems with the meat sticking to the sides of the tub. The operator would cycle the lift at the top, “bangingâ€? it against a stop created by the cylinders bottoming out fully stroke. This helped force the meat to release. They were having occasional problems with the Sun Hydraulics main relief valve that was screwed into a 2-bank valve manifold. The nose portion, where the tank flow exited the valve, was blowing off.  The valve appeared to be made in two pieces with a round key holding the nose into the main body. Maintenance would clean out the manifold and the lines to the tank and replace the filter element. The crew would install a new valve, and everything would work well for a time. The firm tried to replace it with another brand but found it did not have a common DIN cavity porting, and they could not find another brand that would interchange. Maintenance also had a running battle with the operators, saying they were causing pressure spikes when they “bangedâ€? the lift to empty the tubs.

He is using this scholarship to attend Case Western Reserve University. Here’s what Noah has been working on in his first semester: “I have settled in wonderfully at Case Western. I have made some great friends, enjoy my classes and have had fun exploring Cleveland. In the past month, I have declared a double major in mechanical and aerospace engineering and I have joined the Case Western Reserve Baja SAE build team. The challenge is to design, build and race an off-road vehicle against other schools. Having never done that before, I am learning a lot. I’ve been expanding on my fluid power experience as well, as we use a custom hydraulic brake system and gas shocks. In addition to that, I have an on-campus job at the IT center and have joined the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).” Every time I talk with Noah, I am impressed by his drive, his initiative and interest in fluid power. Colorado State University’s Fluid Power Club Looking Forward to Growth in 2020

THE NFPA TECHNOLOGY and Education Foundation has launched a new program this year to support Fluid Power Clubs on university campuses. The goal of the clubs is to get younger students introduced to and interested in fluid power, support club activities, and connect students to industry professionals to learn about careers in fluid power. We asked Riley Abbott, President of the Colorado State University Fluid

Power Club, what they have been up to and here’s what he had to say: “The Colorado State University Fluid Power Club has had a full semester of activity! Through this first semester there has been a lot of work put into the group to make sure it flourishes. The club has focused mainly on recruiting and planning during its life span to make sure the foundations of the group are well established. “From a recruitment standpoint, the members have been busy talking to engineering class students, handing out flyers, and speaking to friends to make sure the club grows. Last semester, the club went from three official members to 11! The club hopes to build on its momentum to make sure that Colorado State University has a place for students to learn about hydraulics and pneumatics. “Last semester, the club was also busy deciding what the members wanted the club to be. The group decided on focusing on three different aspects of the club: knowledge through application, guidance through networking, and giving back through service. One of the ideas for this semester that has drawn the most support has been a competition between two teams to see who can make a device to lift the most weight! “Overall I am very proud of where the club has gotten! It still has a lot of room to grow but if the group continues with its momentum we will be in a great place. The club has found a great home at Colorado State University where it can nurture interested minds on fluid power and will continue to do so!”

The functional safety revolution in electrohydraulics SIL & PL certified digital proportional valves

Digital technology has changed our lives and is a central focus of the industrial sector. It is the basis for fieldbuses, diagnostics and functional safety, and now it is essential to engineering smarter and safer industry 4.0 machines. Functional safety is the ability to detect a potentially dangerous condition and activate a protective mechanism to prevent a hazardous event. The Machine Directive 2006/42/EC with relevant harmonized standards IEC 61508 safety integrity level (SIL) and ISO 13849 performance level (PL) define the general principles concerning machine safety that manufacturers must consider to limit risks related to machine operation. Consequently, hydraulic system designers need to extend their competence and responsibility in dealing with safety regulations related to the risk prevention for workers and equipment in case of system fault or human error. They are also investing time and energy in components validation and the relative overall system certification process. Certified safety valves eliminate the need for machine manufacturers to validate such components in compliance with the applicable safety standards. A considerable amount of time is saved during the machine design, resulting in a simplification of the system certification process. The standard solution foresees the use of on-off valves or cartridges with inductive safety sensors to monitor the spool or poppet position, information that the machine’s central unit collects to confirm the safe status of the valve. The innovation is represented by new digital proportional valves with onboard electronics designed for functional safety and certified by a notified body. They meet safety standards by performing the safety function in addition to axis motion control or standard valve regulation. The safety function is operated to limit potential risks to equipment or operators by preventing dangerous movements of electrohydraulic axes during machine cycles. It is activated by the machine’s central unit 52

in case of emergency and inhibits the regulation of proportional valve via on-off enable signals. The valve confirms when a safe spool position has been reached. This information is managed by the machine’s central unit as a “safe condition.” Atos safety proportional valves are certified by TÜV in compliance with ISO 13849 up to category 4, PL e and IEC 61508 up to SIL 2 / SIL 3. The certification guarantees valve compliance with related safety norms and proves that the valve meets all requirements the SIL and PL levels claimed for the specific valve. Of course, overall system SIL and PL levels do not depend solely on the characteristics of a single component. Moreover, SIL and PL levels are determined by hydraulic system architecture, diagnostic coverage

of that system, and the entire chain of safety-related parts that perform the safety function. Architecture plays a fundamental role; on-off and proportional controls can be integrated in redundant double channel systems to achieve higher safety levels, increasing the complexity of the systems. In the last year, functional safety in hydraulic systems has become more important and is no longer an option; it's now a basic requirement for every manufacturer. Certified valves support engineers in designing safer systems without wasting time in components validation versus the applicable safety standards.

Linde Hydraulics Opens New Plant in Weifang, China

IN AN OFFICIAL ceremony, Linde Hydraulics GmbH & Co. KG opened its newly built production plant in Weifang, China. The global project team took only two years for completion from concept to opening of this 36,000m2 facility, which encompasses an administration building along with 25,000m2 production halls. The new facility consolidates processes previously housed in several buildings and allows for the best possible material flow throughout production. Coordination at the beginning of the project allowed for optimal plant layout through "greenfield” development. For example, the measurement/testing laboratory is directly connected to both the receiving and the production departments to achieve and secure the high-quality standards. “We are happy about the new capacities that have been realized in Weifang. Thanks to the very strong international collaboration between Germany and China, we have been able to develop a

function-specific and overall layout, which will increase our efficiency, “said Joerg Ulrich, CEO of the company. The Weifang plant has the capacity to produce 100,000 units per year. 80% of the production capacity will be dedicated to pumps and motors and 20% for valve technology. "With the new plant in China, we will further strengthen our position in the Asian market and continue our global growth course," said Ulrich said about the plant opening. "The units produced here will enable us to supply the Asian market faster and with a more customer-oriented focus than ever before. We can now offer more localized units with market-oriented prices.” Along with the recently opened second location in North America, the new Weifang plant in China is another step by the German company to grow globally and to pursue the "local for local" market approach to providing faster availability and shorter reaction times around the globe. RETROFITTING COMPONENT CONNECTIONS The following is a composite of familiar situations drawn from engineering calls.

A press goes down and the plant finds a temporary solution. A component (pump, valve, cylinder, etc.) will need to be replaced over a weekend shutdown. Maintenance and engineering does their job and checks things out beforehand, including all of the connectors and fit-ups. The flange fittings cannot be checked because the press cannot be shut down and the fittings are three stories above ground in a tight location. The press is decades old and little documentation for it exists. Things are never easy. They call MAIN to try to help. MAIN has been in the flange business for more than sixty years and done business with most of the press manufacturers. In fact, MAIN started out making hydraulic presses before shifting exclusively to flanges in the 1970s. MAIN’s support staff directs them to our website and a white paper estimating a flange bolt hole spacing while the flange is still installed. The white paper “Measuring Flange Bolt Hole Patterns” can be found in the Engineering Section on MAIN’s Website and on Fluid Power Journal’s website (https://fluidpowerjournal.com/white-paper-measuring-flangebolt-hole-patterns/). It explains a simple technique to approximate the bolt-hole pattern using digital calipers. If it is a simple replacement, many times MAIN has the part already in stock. It is not unusual for the maintenance team to find that the old component used one flange pattern and the new component uses a different pattern. Another common situation is for the old component to have one type of port, (socket weld, butt weld, BSPP, pipe connection) and the user wants to use another (such as a hose connection) or add another line or gauge. Finally, the new connector might need to be longer because the new component is smaller or the pipe was cut getting the component out. Several options exist if the patterns do not match. The obvious one is to get the new flange with the new pattern. If another component is bolting to it, a fitting that adapts to the pattern, a flange adapter, might be required. MAIN has hundreds of flange adapters that change the bolt pattern by spacing, bolt size, and orientation. Options include changing the pattern between Code 61, Code 62, or square patterns; changing sizes ( -24 pattern to -20 pattern, for example); and rotating the pattern or making the part an elbow. Examples of when it would be desirable for the port style to change would be converting from pipe or tubing to hose. The adapter discussed above would convert square patterns to SAE patterns that would easily allow flanged head hoses to be used for the line. Butt weld port or socket weld ports can be substituted for one another, balancing cost with ease of welding. SAE straight threads can be used instead of BSPP or other porting or as another way to adapt to using hose. In some instances, the new component is smaller or the footprint spaces the port differently. This requires the flange connector to be longer or offset. In these situations, the port holes can partially intersect, be drilled at an angle, or be connected by a cross hole. Maintenance and engineering personnel need to consider flow and pressure drop, but generally neither is significant. When replacing the flange, it is a great time to consider adding an additional port for a gauge, a sampling port, a pilot, or additional lines.

The terms speed control and flow control are often used interchangeably to identify a valve with the primary function of limiting the velocity of an actuator. The process of limiting actuator velocity by restricting flow with an orifice introduces a pressure drop (ΔP) which may require an increase in supply pressure, depending on actuator type. Increasing the pressure also has an impact on the volumetric flow rate. Flow controls commonly used in pneumatic systems are meter-out. The actuator speed is limited by restricting the air flow as it exits the component. This method will more effectively control overrunning loads. The meter-out flow control can also be installed on the exhaust port of the directional control valve. However, the load may jump if the actuator or piping has a large volume of de-pressurized air that will compress before being forced out the restriction. Meter-in flow controls will be used for components that do not have an exhaust port, such as a single acting spring return cylinder, for other applications where the load is constant, or if high back pressure would be detrimental to the component function. Safety tip: Caution should be used when applying meter-out flow controls as load induced pressures could cause the rod end pressure to become intensified and this pressure could exceed the maximum pressure rating of the cylinder. The simplest flow control is a fixed, non-adjustable orifice. One method is to drill a properly sized hole in a threaded plug or set screw, see Fig. 1-21. The plug or set screw is then installed into a component port below the conductor fitting. In other cases the orifice plug is screwed into a threaded opening in the fitting. The design intent is to insure that the adjustment is not tampered with or removed. This convenient method of adding an orifice is sometimes overlooked when servicing equipment. If the fitting is replaced or improperly installed on a different port, the resulting fault may consume significant troubleshooting time to identify the cause. Needle valves are adjustable orifices that restrict flow (speed) in both directions (Fig. 1-22). Flow controls (Fig. 1-23) are adjustable orifices with an integral check valve to permit flow (speed) control in one direc-tion only and reverse flow with minimal restriction. The most common flow control used is a needle valve integrated into a fitting. A bypass check valve will also be integrated in the fitting to permit free reverse flow. The direction of free flow should be indicated on the body of the fitting. Depending on the application and location, the fitting may be used for meter-in or meterout functions. The adjusting knob may have a locking portion to prevent vibration from causing the adjustment to change. If the flow control fitting is installed on the exhaust ports of the directional control valve, a reverse flow check valve is not required, but may be used because it is often included as an integral part of the flow control fitting.
