INTERNATIONAL FLUID POWER SOCIETY

Price Engineering. Thirty high school students. c A tour. Fluid power classroom kits. Sharing. An internship. What does all this equal? The new NFPA Student Career Connections (SCC) program. The first SCC event took place at NFPA member Price Engineering in Hartland, Wis., on March 17, 2015. The SCC program is a newly developed initiative from NFPA to get middle and high school students interested in fluid power, engineering, and manufacturing. It’s a wonderful way to connect with students and get more involved in the community, and the schedule can be adjusted to fit whatever time and resources the company has available. Here’s how a typical half-day program works: Students and teachers from local middle or high schools get a tour of an NFPA member company. A member from that company speaks to students about careers, what a day in the life is like, and how to get into the industry, etc. Members work with students to put together a basic fluid power classroom kit. The member company provides lunch (if time allows). NFPA can provide teachers with a fluid power curriculum that has been used in several Project Lead The Way (PLTW) schools before the group leaves.

At Price Engineering, students from Arrowhead High School met in a conference room and got to see through video and a presentation what Price does and the different creative and innovative job opportunities available in the fluid power field. They broke into groups and got a tour of the company, talking to several employees along the way about what they do and seeing first hand how it gets done. After that, all the students and employees came back to the conference room and worked together to build a fluid power classroom kit. While they were doing that, pizza was brought in, and Price played videos of innovative and fun work being done in fluid power. A group of students even shared their video of a robot they created to compete in FIRST Robotics. Because of this event, one student got an internship at Price. Everyone involved had a lot of fun, and some great student/industry connections were definitely made. For more information on how to host a Student Career Connections event at your company, contact me at lbeyer@nfpa.com or call 414-778-3364. I can work with a local school (that you are already involved with) to invite students and teachers, or with your help, I can find some new options. This program offers a lot of flexibility and can be made to fit whatever you have to offer students to get them interested and involved in fluid power.

BLUETOOTH EMBEDDED AMPLIFIER ENABLES WIRELESS CONFIGURATION OF PROPORTIONAL CARTRIDGES Sun Hydraulics Corp. developed a new way to configure embedded amplifiers without using a PC or connecting with wires. This new version can be configured via a free iOS or Android app using Bluetooth for quick, easy, reliable wireless calibration. This development for the fluid power cartridge industry means that technicians can now be in close proximity to observe machine operation but remain untethered and therefore completely safe when setting up and calibrating the machine behavior. Configuring without wires means the end of special cables, connectors, and the need for an expensive PC in the field, relying instead on a smartphone.

10

www.FluidPowerJournal.com • July/August 2015 • www.IFPS.org

ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

The Bluetooth embedded amplifiers are fully encapsulated for vibration, shock, and environmental protection, sealed to IP69K (with Deutsch DT04-6P connector) and IP65 (with DIN 43650 A connector). They are CE certified to the latest standards, including the 30-V/m automotive standard per Directive 2009/19/EC. The amplifiers were tested on X, Y, and Z axes over a frequency of 33.3 Hz at an overall level of 6.8 Gs for a total of four hours each. DIAGNOSTIC/OPERATIONAL LEDS

To make it even easier to use, the amplifiers have two indicator LEDs labeled “Power/Status” and “Active.” These LEDs allow users to determine the status of the amplifier from a distance. When the app opens, the Bluetooth scan locates the amplifiers within range and provides a list of available amplifiers. Once they select an amplifier, the “Power/ Status” LED starts blinking, providing clear visual indication of the amplifier selected, and then provides further feedback regarding the real-time operational status.

The “Power/Status” LED provides several diagnostic and operational indications: Lights “blue” when power is applied to the unit within the specified supply voltage range Flashes “blue” when connected to a smart device and stops flashing when connection ends Flashes “red” when a coil-open circuit or short circuit is detected Flashes “red” when an analog command input is out of range or wrongly configured Flashes “red” when the supply voltage drops below 8 Vdc Lights “red” if the amplifier is not connected to the AmpSet Blue™ app The amber-colored “Active” LED varies in brightness, providing visual indication of the amount of current supplied to the amplifier. The brighter the amber light, the more output current being used.

THE ECONOMICS OF BLUETOOTH WIRELESS CONFIGURATION

Unlike the infrared solutions that require special cables, the amplifier is configured without cables. In addition, no programmer or laptop is required – only a smartphone. And in harsh environments, carrying a smartphone in a protective case is a practical, inexpensive alternative to the risk of using an unprotected laptop or the expense of a ruggedized one. It works out that in an application requiring two amplifiers, the newer, more technically advanced Bluetooth solution is less expensive and much more convenient than two non-Bluetooth amplifiers, cabling, and a handheld programmer. And because one Bluetooth embedded amplifier offers either voltage or current command capabilities, one new unit can

KEEPING IT SECURE

For added protection, the amplifier can be configured with an optional password via the AmpSet Blue™ app, and Sun recommends that all amplifier configurations are password protected. This limits access to the amplifier’s configuration settings to authorized users only. In addition, the amplifier has a time-out feature that disconnects the amplifier from the app after a period of inactivity. If you forget a password for an amplifier, you can generate a temporary key from the app and, using the key on the amplifier’s serial number, you can contact Sun’s tech support and request a new password. When connected to an amplifier, manual mode allows the user to control the valve and associated functions directly, making it easy to check for correct operation when starting a new system. To prevent accidental use of manual mode, the app requires an additional password to ensure operator awareness. CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

The AmpSet Blue™ app offers three main operational modes: standard, inverse, and two-speed. Standard mode is commonly used for proportional valve applications, with the increase in the command value increasing the output proportionally. Inverse mode works inversely from standard mode. As the command value increases, the output will decrease proportionally. Two-speed mode (available only with the six-pin Deutsch connector) provides low or high settings for either speed or pressure, depending on the valve being controlled. When the command input switch is closed, the amplifier will output the minimum programmed output current; when it is open, the amplifier outputs the maximum programmed current.

replace two standard embedded amplifiers in inventory, simplifying purchasing and stocking parts for an application. LEVERAGING BLUETOOTH TECHNOLOGY IN HYDRAULICS APPLICATIONS

It’s easy to imagine industrial applications that would benefit from Bluetooth-configurable valves. Within a 30-foot range, Bluetooth reaches places that might otherwise require climbing with programming equipment, operator and equipment exposure to hazardous environments, and greatly increased time to connect and configure valves. With Bluetooth, the technician can remain untethered, standing clear of equipment, and reconfigure installed amplifiers quickly and easily, saving time and money and reducing risk. In OEM mobile equipment applications, the amplifiers provide a tamper-resistant, easy-to-configure yet secure solution for a range of applications. Especially beneficial in equipment that commonly finds its way into the rental market, this solution keeps meddlesome renters from “adjusting” and potentially damaging the equipment. Also, by providing a portable, field-configurable solution for remote locations, field service technicians can download the free AmpSet Blue™ app from anywhere with cel-

Figure It Out

Cylinder Stuttering on a Technical School Trainer A community technical school received funding for a hydraulics program. They had nice hands-on-training stands in storage and did a nice job setting up their hydraulics lab. They talked a Physics instructor into teaching the class, and things were going fine until he had the students plumb up the circuit shown. The cylinder would stutter badly when it was extending and run smoothly when it contacted a load spring. The professor thought it was just a case of air in the cylinder, but the students could not see any air spitting out when they bled both ends of the cylinder. They were thinking the cylinder was damaged inside and should be replaced. The professor moved the students over to a spare hands-on trainer and found it also stuttered using the same circuit. The circuit used a pressure-compensated pump set to 3 gpm; a pilot-operated, closed-center directional valve with internal pilot; and external drains and a cylinder. The cylinder would extend 6" before it contacted a die spring, which would simulate a load, causing the pressure to build up as the spring compressed. The flow meter indicator bounced up and down when the cylinder stuttered, but held steady when the load spring was engaged. The glycerin-filled pressure gage dropped to a low reading until the load spring was compressed.

c

Could he have two defective cylinders?

Solution to Previous Problem

SCRAP STEEL WINDER SLOWING DOWN The reason the hydraulic motor on the slitter slowed down was the use of non-pressure-compensated flow controls in the module mounted under the directional valve. They missed the fact that the original flow controls were pressure compensated. With non-pressure-compensated flow controls, the flow they pass decreases as the pressure drop across them decreases. The pump compensator setting stayed consistent, while the motor pressure increased as the scrap coil diameter increased, reducing the flow. Replacing them with pressure-compensated flow controls solved the problem. The problem was printed in our May/June 2015 issue. See it at www.fluidpowerjournal.com.

Economic Report

Global Manufacturing Update By Chad Moutray, Chief Economist, National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)

May 2015 – The global economy has garnered a lot of attention lately, with sluggish growth hampering the ability of manufacturers to increase international sales. Indeed, net exports served as a drag on real GDP in the United States in each of the past two quarters, subtracting 1.25 percentage points from growth in the first quarter of 2015. Weakened demand abroad, a stronger U.S. dollar, and residual impacts from the West Coast ports slowdown have been attributed to the recent softness in export growth (as well as for the larger U.S. economy). Regarding exchange rates, the U.S. dollar has appreciated roughly 17% since the end of June against major currencies, according to the Federal Reserve, and that was actually an improvement from the 22.3% gain just a few weeks ago. The net impact of these headwinds has been a widening of the U.S. trade deficit to its highest level in six and a half years, with year-to-date manufactured goods exports down 3.8% relative to the same time frame in 2014.

2013

2014

2015

The J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI fell to its lowest level since August 2013. Most notably, exports stalled. The good news is that the manufacturing sector continues to expand, but at a pace that remains less than robust. The country-by-country analysis was also weaker in April. Indeed, six of the top 10 markets for U.S.-manufactured goods had contracting levels of manufacturing activity in April, up from two in February and five in March. Four of the six were in Asia: China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. Japan’s addition to this list marked the first production decline since July 2014. Brazil and Canada were the other two contracting nations, with the latter suffering on falling energy prices and contracting for the third straight month. Outside of Alberta and British Columbia, manufacturers in Canada reported modest growth in activity. Manufacturers in China have reported contracting activity levels in four of the past five months, with the pace of decline in April at a 12-month low. Overall, China’s economic data reflect slower – but still sizable – growth. Real GDP rose 7.0% percent year-over-year in the first quarter, down from 7.3% growth in the fourth quarter. Yet, output in the sector remains below the 8.7% annual growth rate seen 12 months ago, and it continues a larger easing trend over the past few months. Along those lines, retail sales and private investment in fixed assets each experienced slower year-over-year growth rates in April. To be fair, each of these paces for expansion remains at healthy rates of activity, but they are much lower than what market participants are accustomed to seeing. Meanwhile, the Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI decelerated a bit in April, but growth in manufacturing activity remains better today than a few months ago. Indeed, hiring in the sector grew at its fastest pace since August 2011. The overriding story in Europe continues to be an improving situation, but one in which strong growth remains elusive. Real GDP rose 0.4% in the first quarter, edging up from 0.3% growth in the fourth quarter. On a year-to-year basis, the Eurozone grew 1.0%. At the same time, industrial production and retail sales were both lower in March, and the unemployment rate remained elevated at 11.3%. On the positive side, two-thirds of respondents expect conditions to improve in the coming months, and annual inflation was unchanged after reflecting deflation for four straight months. Some might suggest that these better indicators of late have been the result of the European Central Bank’s effort to prop up the economy, but it is also true that Europe has a long way to go before it is out of the woods entirely. Action on the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), trade facilitation and enforcement, and

trade preference measures takes place now, while concrete movement on a long-term Export-Import (Ex-Im) Bank reauthorization is still sought. Negotiations are moving forward with the Asia-Pacific and Europe, while the NAM seeks to tackle the other important policy and commercial issues.

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) represents small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector in all 50 states. For more information, visit www.nam.org.

WHEN TO REPLACE A PUMP BY SCOTT MASON, CFPS, FLUIDYNE FLUID POWER

A frequent question in fluid power is “When should I replace my pump?” The answer is “It depends.”

IT

depends on a multitude of factors, conditions, age, duty cycle, and performance, etc. There are, however, key indicators that point to a pump’s impending demise, and when detected early, they can mitigate the damages.

LEAKING The most common form of pump failure is the simple leak. There are two basic types of leaks – external and internal: External leakage is easy to spot; fluid can be weeping or flowing to the outside of a pump, and it usually collects into a puddle. This can be easy to spot with a clean environment. However, poor housekeeping can make the small drip from a leaking seal difficult to spot. When there are puddles and grime, a small leak may go unnoticed. Internal leakage, on the other hand, cannot be spotted visually. Fluid slipping over vanes or the rotating group of a worn pump will produce heat. This inefficiency will not be seen visually, but can be felt or measured in the form of system heat. All leakage compromises system performance in the form of flow. With less fluid/flow doing the work, the cycle time/ performance suffers with slower response.

16

www.FluidPowerJournal.com • July/August 2015 • www.IFPS.org

PERFORMANCE Cycle time in a hydraulic system is a sure way to reveal declining system (pump) performance. There is a simple method for testing your system performance. This method requires a clear view of the system actuator and a watch with a second hand. While viewing the actuator, note the time for a complete cycle. Note the cycle time when a unit is new, and you will have a baseline to compare with at a later date. (Tip: write the cycle time on the actuator, the reservoir for an industrial system, or frame rail for a mobile application; you won’t have to search for it later.) As cycle time increases, internal fluid leakage is the likely culprit. Do you think a few seconds added to your cycle won’t matter? Imagine a cylinder with a cycle time of 10 seconds to extend and retract. This same cylinder cycles once a minute (60 times an hour) for two eight-hour shifts (960 times in a day). Add five seconds to the cycle due to component wear. This is a total of 4,800 seconds (80 extra minutes per day) waiting for a cylinder to shift. Simply put, this is 80 minutes wasted a day because of a small internal leak – 80 minutes a day, 5 days a week, at 4

weeks a month, 12 months a year, times $ lost labor cost. A few minutes, twice a month, to check hydraulic cycle time is a small step that can lead to potential savings.

NOISE All hydraulic systems have inherent noises – the whine of an electric motor, revving of a truck motor, the sound of a piston pump at pressure turning 1750 rpm. Then there are the other sounds, such as the grinding noise or the dreaded knocking sound. These other sounds are an indicator that something is amiss. If you cannot have a conversation near a running hydraulic system without straining to be heard, there is an issue with the system. This noise may be caused by entrained air in the hydraulic fluid. This can be the result of aeration where free air is drawn into the stream of oil, or from cavitation where dissolved gasses are drawn out of the oil. The most common point of entry for air is the pump’s suction port. Flange ports that aren’t tight, loose hose connections, or a cracked housing on the pump will all allow air in the system. Even a leaking shaft seal has the ability to draw air into the system. Cloudy oil is usually an

indicator of aeration. Cavitation is caused by a restriction at the pump’s inlet (suction strainers and inlet hose). This restriction results in a low inlet pressure that causes dissolved air to vaporize as it enters the pump. In either case, the air bubbles implode as they are suddenly pressurized in the pump. The imploding bubbles make a lot of noise. They will cause metal surfaces to erode and pit, filling the system with metal contaminants. Entrained air can degrade fluid to the point where it can fail to provide lubrication to moving components, resulting in overheating and eventual system failure. All of this noise, banging, and knocking is your system telling you something is wrong!

HEAT How hot is your hydraulic system? Can you safely hold your hand over the pump? It should be warm; it’s moving fluid and doing work. However, if your pump is so hot you cannot briefly touch it, there is likely an issue. Heat in a system has many detrimental effects; the greatest is on the hydraulic oil. Oil should be maintained near 120°F for the best results and never exceed 150°F. Oil that is above 120°F will oxidize and begin to sep-

arate into acids and sludge, which causes corrosion. The sludge can block orifice pathways leading to more heat. This heat generation then leads to a loss of viscosity, and this lower viscosity will cause a greater slippage or internal leakage that creates more heat. It is a vicious cycle (not viscous). We covered that internal wear/leakage can develop heat; there are other areas, as well. Entrained air is one. When the air trapped in hydraulic fluid is compressed and implodes, all that energy has to go somewhere. It is turned into heat and pumped into the rest of the system only to end up in the reservoir. The reservoir is designed to do more than just hold fluid; it also functions as a heat exchanger by letting oil cool and dissipate heat to the atmosphere through the walls and air circulation. A reservoir not at the correct fluid level may not allow the oil enough time to exchange this heat. All hydraulic systems generate heat; it’s just the resistance of the fluid flowing through the hose and tubing that will raise temperatures. It’s the extreme (greater than 180°F) temperatures that are lethal to system components.

USING SENSE TO SAVE CENTS When is the best time to replace or rebuild a pump? Barring total failure, nothing is going to answer that question better than a well-managed maintenance program and historical data. Nonetheless, observation using your senses can be an excellent predictor for your system. Sight: How long is cycle time, and how does it compare to new? What is the fluid condition? Sound: How loud is your system? Are there abnormal sounds? Touch: How warm is the system running? Smell: Does the fluid have a burnt odor? Taste: Don’t even think about it! Are these red flags starting to pop up in your system? Is cycle time creeping up? It may be time to start planning to replace or rebuild your pump. Do you have a spare unit in inventory? Now is the time to verify model codes and confirm that all system components are working properly. Note: If your system is at the stage that the pump needs to be replaced, so do the filters! Don’t install a new pump with

dirty oil and filters. Install the new unit into your system, and after adjustment, record the cycle time and monitor periodically. This paper does not intend to cover all potential causes of failure; there are many, and they are varied. It assumes that mechanical issues, such as pump and prime mover alignment, are correct; system pressure is properly maintained; and pump was filled with fluid prior to start up. This information is provided as a guideline to help diagnose impending pump issues.

In Memoriam

Raymond F. Hanley, CFPE/AI – Emeritus Raymond F. Hanley, a tremendous advocate of the IFPS and fluid power industry, passed away near his home in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 30, 2015. Mr. Hanley was born February 10, 1926 to Russell and Sidonia Hanley in Glassport, Pa. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and served on a ship in the South Pacific. In between island bombardments, escort duty, riding out typhoons, and chasing/guarding enemy submarines, he communicated with stateside schools and companies in anticipation of WWII ending and the resumption of his normal civilian life. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and entered the University of Pittsburgh under the GI Bill to study Mechanical Engineering. He started a floor sanding and refinishing business to pay for books, transportation, and other essentials. He graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree. When Mr. Hanley landed a job with Westinghouse Airbrake Company in its new industrial pneumatic division, he thought it would be an interim position; however, pneumatic fluid power took him on a different type of journey – one that led him to marine, oilfield, aircraft, and other military projects. In 1959, he started Circuit Engineering, his own fluid power business. Even after Mr. Hanley retired from the distribution business, he never stopped working on behalf of the International Fluid Power Society. His passion for the Society and certification never waned as he continued to work energetically on behalf of the organization he loved so much. He served as IFPS president from 1986 to 1987, was certification vice president for many years, and has been an IFPS honorary director since 2006. He authored two books: Fluid Power Math for Certification and Fluid Power Essential Practices. His passion and dedication to the fluid power industry is legendary. His significant contribution to IFPS certifications, and their accompanying study manuals, led to his being named the first and (so far) only IFPS Emeritus Certificate Holder. The Raymond F. Hanley Scholarship, offered through the Fluid Power Educational Foundation, was established in 2014. The National Fluid Power Association conferred its 1993 Achievement Award to Mr. Hanley in recognition of his outstanding leadership and service to the fluid power industry and achievements in fluid power education. Mr. Hanley married Ercel Dean Thomas in 1950, and they lived in Dallas, Tex.; Falls Church, Va.,; and finally settled in Jacksonville, Fla. Ercel Hanley passed away in 2000. Mr. Hanley is survived by his eight children, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. His hobbies included dancing, camping, fishing, and enjoying a lot of seafood.

A Formula for Success How One Fluid Power Company is Growing by Building a Well-trained, Diverse Workforce By Barry Catanach, B.A. (ECU), MAITD, MFPS

In a world of economic instability combined with the challenge of retaining competent workers in the fluid power industry, Couplers Malaga, a successful hose and fittings business based in the industrial suburb of Malaga in Perth, which is the capital of Western Australia, has developed a proven formula for success by hiring and training women who want to learn, acquire new skills, and who are comfortable working in an industry dominated by men.

O

rganizations that “run lean” by reducing expenditure on training may improve profits, but this approach inevitably bites back when skilled workers move on to other companies. A significant percentage of companies ignore their training responsibilities and simply rely on poaching employees from other companies that are prepared to invest time and money in training their employees. This culture has been endemic in Australia for some time, and its origin can be pinpointed to around 1995 when the Australian government’s compulsory training levy requirement was dropped. The levy was part of federal workplace legislation that required every employer to invest a relatively small

22

percentage of income revenue into employee training or pay the equivalent to the government as a levy. When the compulsory training requirement was dropped, the philosophy of some companies became that of, “Why spend money on training when others will carry the cost?” Despite this poor attitude, which is exhibited by the management of some companies, there are others that are more community-minded. I’ve found a company that, instead of using a conventional recruitment plan to find the best employee for a position, has chosen to specifically recruit women into the hose and fittings area of the fluid power industry – even though women working in the hands-on side of the Australian engineering industry are a rarity. In fact, 95% of the work-

www.FluidPowerJournal.com • July/August 2015 • www.IFPS.org

force at Couplers Malaga is made up of women, with most of the ladies having been with the business since the late 1990s. What’s the secret to their success? I believe it starts with the company training that gives them the ability to make good decisions and the right choice of equipment – and the Couplers Malaga ladies are young, vibrant, and keen to learn. Also, Couplers Malaga management knows that a good team is essential to success, and employees are encouraged to see themselves as valued members of the business, especially as they are the “face” of the business and ultimately have a marked effect on its success or failure. The engagement of women in the hands-on area of the business has been a sound management decision, as has been the enhance-

ment of their capabilities with good training. It has significantly improved the potential of the business to be more profitable. My introduction to the company came about when Couplers Malaga management sought the assistance of professional training providers. During discussions with the management and a training provider, it was agreed that the training should result in the hose and fittings assembler staff attaining a nationally recognized qualification at the Australian National Training System (NTS) Certificate III level in engineering production. An important consideration in the selection of the proposed training was that a trade qualification should not be a prerequisite and that the staff should acquire solid skills in being able to satisfy customer requirements that often called for considerable ingenuity in producing a sound solution to a hose and fittings problem. The purpose of the training was not to produce hydraulic technicians, but to provide Couplers Malaga’s employees with fundamental knowledge on high-pressure safety, component operating principles, and circuit symbol interpretation. One of the major difficulties faced by the company was the scarcity of fluid power trainers who could be engaged to train the staff. Knowledgeable Australian readers will know that this is an Australia-wide problem in the fluid power industry and the main reason why so little fluid power training is being carried out in Australia, even though the fluid power industry is a large and long-established part of engineering in Australia. Once the Couplers Malaga training program had been set up and aligned to the NTS qualifications, employees attended training sessions one evening each week for 18 months. The training was workplace-based and covered both theory and practice – with the practice proving to be quite incompatible with the long fingernails favored by some young ladies! I have nothing but praise for the ladies in the enthusiastic way they attacked the practical training – not being at all reticent in getting their hands dirty while pulling apart hydraulic pumps and other equipment. They took to the fluid power training like “ducks to water,” and they excelled in circuit interpretation and practical circuit building. Their prior work experience in the high-pressure hose and fittings area provided a good background to the fluid power training course. Twelve months after completing their training, these ladies were found to be confident in showing clients the correct fittings to use for different applications and in developing fitting combinations that work around problems. The respect that they have earned

is demonstrated by the fact that many male customers previously would ignore the ladies and wait for the only man behind the counter to serve them. Now the only man struggles for customers’ attention! Couplers Malaga is to be complimented on sound management thinking that has been backed up by professional training to provide a unique employment opportunity for women in a male-dominated industry.

xperts from the offshore energy industry around the world came together May 5-7 for the 2015 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) at NRG Park in Houston, Tex. More than 94,700 attendees from 130 countries gathered at the annual conference, demonstrating OTC’s position as a leading forum to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for the safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable development of offshore oil and gas resources. It is the sixth largest attendance in the 47-year history of OTC. The sold-out exhibition was the largest in show history at 695,005 ft2, including outdoor exhibits, up from 680,025 ft2 in 2014. This year’s conference also had 2,682 companies exhibiting, up from 2,568 in 2014, representing 37 countries. International companies made up 42% of exhibitors. “OTC continues to bring the world to Houston. The record-setting number of paper submissions ensured a high-quality technical program, covering the latest innovations and applications. Coupled with superb panels, in-depth exclusive keynotes, a new crop of Spotlight on New Technology award winners, and a record-setting exhibition, OTC drew everyone from CEOs to engineers to government officials,” said Ed Stokes, chairman of OTC. This year’s event featured 11 panel sessions, 29 executive keynote presentations at luncheons and breakfasts, and nearly 300 technical paper presentations. Speakers – including major, independent, and national oil companies; federal and regional government officials; and academics – presented their views on a wide variety of topics, including future industry directions, operational integrity, and risk management. OTC’s Spotlight on New Technology Award recognized 17 technologies for their innovation in allowing the industry to produce offshore resources, including two companies in the new category of Small Business Awards. The conference’s focus on bridging technology was exemplified by the “Pumps and Pipes: Innovation in the Oil Field and Cardiovascular Medicine” technical session. Leaders from two of Houston’s major industries – medicine, and oil and gas – discussed advances that could be shared to add value, reduce risk, and improve efficiencies. Safety also continued to be a key area of focus at OTC. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) announced the launch of the SafeOCS program, an initiative aimed at collecting and analyzing “near-miss” data to learn more about potential problems offshore and prevent them from becoming an issue. In addition, BSEE released its first-ever annual report, which presented the agency’s analysis of offshore activities and revealed an encouraging decline in incidents since the organization was created in 2011.

The Center for Offshore Safety hosted a breakfast session focused on “Improving Safety and Environmental Performance.” In addition, a technical session and lunch discussed ways to improve the effectiveness of safety and environmental management systems. Additional highlights included discussions about the continued importance of deepwater exploration and the next emerging offshore plays. A panel session from the International Oil and Gas Producers shared thoughts about the need to simplify and standardize specifications to drive down costs and quicken the development of new projects, as well as further improve safety. More than 200 Houston-area classroom teachers and 200 students attended OTC’s Energy Education Institute. Teachers learned about scientific concepts of energy and its importance in a fun and informative way. Participating students saw first-hand the exciting opportunities the energy industry can offer. Individuals seeking career advice and new opportunities were invited to participate in OTC’s Open Access Day, which provided free registration to 1,300 attendees seeking to tap into the conference’s networking opportunities. As part of the day’s programming, attendees learned how to build valuable relationships and sharpen their skills through two professional development sessions.

CIRCLE 123

OTC also hosted The Rice Alliance Startup Roundup. At this new event, 50 emerging companies had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with investors. It offered a great opportunity for OTC attendees to learn more about these startups, and enable potential partnerships and investments. The Next Wave, OTC’s program for young professionals, was attended by nearly 500 people and focused on how to face the challenges ahead for young professionals while recognizing the increased interconnectivity of this global industry.

Elmer Peter Danenberger received the 2015 Distinguished Achievement Award for his significant contributions to offshore safety and environmental protection. The Distinguished Achievement Award for Companies, Organizations, and Institutions was presented to Petrobras for its pre-salt development, and Ray Ayers, PhD, PE, was honored with the OTC Heritage Award in recognition for his 50+ years in offshore research and development. OTC 2016 takes place May 2-5, 2016 at RNG Park. Visit www.otcnet.org.

Holmatro Cylinders Chosen for Snorre A Platform In early 2015, Holmatro Industrial Equipment and its Norwegian dealer EIVA-SAFEX AS jointly supplied 64 cylinders, each with a capacity of 536 tons, to the tension-leg platform (TLP) Snorre A. Besides cylinders, the corresponding control and storage for the hydraulic system was also delivered. The Snorre oil field is located in the Norwegian North Sea, 200 km from the coast. One of the platforms, TLP Snorre A, is anchored to the seabed with steel cables. In order to retain, measure, and monitor the pre-tensioning of the cables, each leg of the platform includes constructions that are each fitted with load cells. When calibrating the load cells, the weight of the platform must be taken off. With the help of the new cylinders, the corresponding control and storage for the hydraulic system, this job can be done much easier now. The Holmatro Industrial Solutions team designed and developed the complete customized hydraulic system. EIVA-SAFEX AS handled the lifting installation, and both companies drew up the required documentation in line with the legal requirements for the offshore platform.

PIRTEK STERLING HEIGHTS REBUILDS POWER UNITS A driveline-manufacturing engineer contacted John Martin, director of sales and marketing for PIRTEK Detroit, to request a quote to rebuild four old hydraulic power units. The client designs, manufactures, and distributes driveline systems and service parts for vehicles, and the hydraulic power units are a critical piece of equipment in the production process. They supply hydraulic power to the friction welders that build the drive shafts. The units were running extremely hot, causing the company to make frequent, sometimes daily, repairs. Each component of the units, such as valves, switches, gauges, electric motor, motor mounts, pumps, chiller, hydraulic tubes, and hoses were removed and replaced with new/remanufactured components. The motors were cleaned, inspected, and rewound. The pumps and motors were calibrated to factory specs and included certification paperwork for verification. The chiller was also upgraded to resolve the overheating issue. www.pirtekusa.com

Collaborative Staffing Plan to Support Fluid Power Research, Education, and Promotion Months after launching a new giving and recognition society within the NFPA Education and Technology Foundation to increase support for fluid power education and research, the NFPA and CCEFP have formed a collaborative, synergistic staffing plan to provide administrative support for those activities and to better promote the fluid power industry to future employees and customers. “There is a lot of alignment between the activities of the CCEFP and the marketing and education objectives of the NFPA,” said Eric Lanke, NFPA CEO. “Fluid power research performed by CCEFP universities not only develops additional teaching resources and connects more students to our industry, but it also helps to expand fluid power’s innovation capacity. Promoting CCEFP research objectives and outcomes can therefore improve the image of our technology in the minds of our customers, our industry, and aspiring engineers.” The collaborative staffing plan has been designed to leverage the inherent strengths and align resources within both organizations toward this collective goal. It will allow the CCEFP to increase its focus on its core strengths of research and education, and connect it more

c

seamlessly to the better-resourced and established marketing and communications functions of the NFPA. “It’s truly a win-win for both organizations,” said Kim Stelson, University of Minnesota professor and CCEFP director. “As the Center transitions away from NSF funding, this administrative collaboration with the NFPA will help us both broaden the industry’s awareness of our activities and deepen our impact on its behalf. I’m really excited about the added potential this collaboration brings to both organizations.” Currently, a team of two CCEFP and three NFPA staff people has been assembled to focus on a variety of collaborative projects. One shining example is the Fluid Power Innovation and Research Conference, a co-sponsored venture designed to promote the future of fluid power technology and create more industry/academic partnerships. Planned for October 14-16, 2015 in Chicago, the conference is being organized by CCEFP with NFPA handling the marketing and logistics. “It’s a great initial project for the team to sink its teeth into,” Lanke said. “We expect much success there and in a host of other areas.” Visit www.nfpa.com or www.ccefp.org for more information.

A

groundbreaking engineering training facility in the United Kingdom was unveiled to industry leaders by The JCB Academy and Parker Hannifin in March to mark National Apprenticeship Week. A partnership between industry and education professionals, the facility is designed to help apprentices explore the relationship between mechanical, electrical, and fluid power. It combines academic learning with interactive challenges, including a hydraulic nutcracker, cylinder-based snooker cue, joystick-controlled backhoe, and piston push test. The partners aim to raise the profile of apprenticeships and help meet the national engineering skills gap. Industrial dignitaries attending the launch included Jo Bamford of JCB, Transport System Catapult’s Steve Yianni, Andy Lane of SMMT, and John Savage of the National Fluid Power Centre. On viewing the facility, Mr. Yianni commented, “The skills agenda is a critical element of success for the UK to continue to be a technological and innovation-based economy. The innovation at The JCB Academy and support of Parker Hannifin is exactly the kind of industry and education partnership that is needed for the UK to continue to prosper.” The JCB Academy is an exciting school for students from the age of 14 who are interested in business and engineering. It is the first of a brand-new kind of school in the United Kingdom, focused on delivering high-quality engineering and business education. Its motto is “developing engineers and business leaders for the future” and aims to ensure that students have every chance to achieve success, whether they continue into further education or move to further learning in the world of work. At the academy, the curriculum and learning techniques are unique, allowing students to combine theory with practical activities and put learning into practice in purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. Its hours are more like business hours than normal schools and sixth-form colleges, but the curriculum encourages a structured and effective use of time. The academy has had links with Parker for several years. In 2014, the partners discussed opportunities to give students more handson hydraulics experience. Parker agreed to donate a hydraulic training rig, with a view to boosting the academy’s fluid power curriculum. As work progressed, both partners saw the potential for an even bigger and better project. This led to a meeting with the principal and board of governors, and together the TOP: The hydraulic training partners sketched ideas for a area. Fluid Power Bench The interactive bench includes conventional and fluid power snooker cues, a miniature backhoe, hydraulic push-touch drawers, and a “Pyramid of Power.”

Snooker Cue This traditional snooker cue is held in place. Students push the cue to move a ball along a track and into a large square “pocket.” The pocket has a built-in collection and return area.

Fluid Power Snooker Cue The fluid power cue features a hidden pneumatic system and simulates hydraulic power transfer from the cue handle cylinder to three ball strike cylinders. Again, balls roll along the track to the square pocket. www.IFPS.org • July/August 2015 • www.FluidPowerJournal.com

ANNUAL

PHOTO CONTEST

J

une 19th is Fluid Power Professionals’ Day – a day of recognition for all of us who work in the fluid power field! It has been said that fluid power is a “hidden giant” because it is so common in every aspect of our dayto-day existence that we have simply overlooked the obvious. There is not a vehicle, ship, plane, or train that can operate without fluid power. There is no consumer item, no electronic gadget, and no morsel of food we grow that can exist in enough quantity at a cost we can afford without the use of fluid power and our efforts. The photo contest was started to celebrate the wonder of fluid power and those in this industry. It’s a fun, creative way to get professionals involved and showcase what they accomplish everyday. The contest was a huge success this year with over 75 great entries. There were four categories for the photos – Fun with Fluid Power, Fluid Power Professionals in Action, Power Density, and Fluid Power in Motion. A new feature for this year was the People’s Choice Award, which is given to the photo that received the most votes from contest followers. Thank you to all those who participated and voted.
