The dress of your dreams

at Elegance Bridal Studio Starting the search for your bridal gown is an exciting adventure, it’s discovering that one dress that sums you up as an individual, whilst reflecting your style and personality, which sometimes is not as easy as you think it will be.

Let’s face it, most of us ladies live in our jeans and/or comfy leggings, there’s not many occasions where a dress is worn, a lot of women aren’t girly girls and the thought of even wearing a dress let alone a bridal gown can leave most of us in somewhat of a flap… but relax, at Elegance Bridal Studio you are in the safest of hands. The award winning boutique, based on Eastgate, Barnsley town centre, offers a 5 star customer service, showcasing gowns from

14 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

the world’s leading bridal designers, the boutique offers only the latest in bridal fashion, so you can be confident when you step onto the aisle, your gown will be an original design for all your guests to admire. There is so much to think about when shopping for your bridal gown, the date of your wedding and your wedding venue are important factors. Wedding dresses are made in so many different fabrics, styles and colours, so it’s always best to research the bridal shops you intend to visit, rather than just turning up and hoping for the best. Think about what bridal experience you would like, every bridal shop is different, you need to make sure that before you purchase your gown, you are happy with the service, remember, this is your once in a lifetime experience for you to look back on to remember that

feeling when you discovered the dress of your dreams, there really is nothing like it! The next important part is your price point, you need to set a realistic budget whilst including your accessories and alterations; there is no point in trying gowns outside of what you feel comfortable in spending, you’ll only set yourself up for disappointment. If you’ve been watching any of the TV wedding programmes such as ‘Say yes to the dress’ you’ll have noticed they all have large entourages that offer multiple opinions; remember this is all for TV, this is not how you should shop for your wedding dress, the fewer opinions you have, the better. Saying yes to your dress is your journey and trusting your gut instinct is key; just relax and enjoy this special time, putting too much

pressure on yourself will only cloud your judgement. Elegance Bridal Studio have so much more advice and tips on both their website and Facebook page, give them a ‘like’ to be kept up to date with all the latest in bridal fashion news and special in store events that they host throughout the year. They are always available for an informal chat, to offer advice and answer any questions you may have about finding ‘the dress’, so don’t hesitate to get in touch, they’d love to hear all about your wedding plans. Put Elegance Bridal Studio on your list to discover the dress of your dreams.

bridesmaids The Ultimate Guide

Everyone knows that choosing your bridesmaids can be a difficult part of planning your wedding. You don’t want to upset anyone if they don’t get picked, and you don’t want to have so many bridesmaids that it gets ridiculous.

Here’s our Q&A’s to help answer those burning bridesmaid questions.

Ronald Joyce

Kelsey Rose

Ronald Joyce

How many bridesmaids should I have? This depends on whether you have any sisters, a best friend, other close friends and relatives. You could just have your best friend as the one and only, or have your female siblings and a friend together. Bridesmaid etiquette depends on how big your family is and some also choose to make it an extra special occasion by selecting one very important family member, for example, a grandparent, as their bridesmaid. Just a little bit different and extra special too!

Kelsey Rose

Kelsey Rose

Mori Lee

Mori Lee

Mori Lee

Do they all have to have matching dresses? Not necessarily, they could all have the same colour, but different styles to suit their figure/age. Some older bridesmaids may not want to wear exactly the same cut of dress as your 17 year old sister, for example.

Do I have to buy my bridesmaids a gift? You don’t HAVE TO but it’s a nice way of saying ‘thank you for being my bridesmaid’. It only needs to be a small token of thanks, such as personalised lip balms or maybe a wine glass with their name on, nothing over the top but just to say thank you.

16 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

{ BRIDESMAIDS } Mori Lee

Mori Lee

Mori Lee

Who buys the dresses? Traditionally, the bride pays at least a percentage of the cost for the bridesmaid dresses. But nowadays, it is expected for your bridesmaids to foot the bill for their own dress and accessories. Keep this in mind when choosing the design of the bridesmaid’s dress, as there would be nothing worse than asking them to fork out £300 each before they’ve even thought about hair, makeup and accessories. It might also create a bit of unwanted tension in the bridal party.

What is the maid of honour’s role? The Maid of honour/Chief Bridesmaid is usually a sister or a best friend and is tasked to carry out different duties at the bride’s request. The first task is to get involved in the wedding planning, with jobs like wedding dress shopping, helping with favours or advice on choosing bridesmaid dresses. Then arguably the best part of being the maid of honour is planning the hen party; you want to make sure the bride has a fab day, but make sure you stay organised and be firm with the other bridesmaids to avoid confusion; the phrase ‘too many cooks’ springs to mind. Another fun job for the maid of honour is to create a bridal emergency kit for the bride on the day; this can include wet wipes, deodorant, lipstick, waterproof mascara, etc, that sort of thing. You will be your bride’s right hand woman for the big day, so it’s important to reassure her that you have everything under control, to leave her to enjoy her special day without stress.

Where do the bridesmaids sit at the wedding breakfast/ sit down meal? This is a hard one because bridesmaids may have partners and children, so it’s not really fair to have them sat on the top table with you, split from their other half and kids. When doing your table plan, try and have your bridesmaids on a table near you, so at least when giving your speech and handing out gifts, they’re close by. Whatever questions you may have, your local bridesmaid stockist will be on hand to offer advice about style, fit and colour. Think about making an appointment before buying the first dresses you see and let them guide you in the right direction.

DID YOU KNOW?

The time honoured tradition of the rhyme ‘Something old, Something new, Something borrowed, Something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe’ dates back to Victorian times and describes the objects a bride should carry for good luck. The something blue, usually incorporated into the garter is said to represent, purity, love and fidelity.

A joy to visit When the Editor of prestigious London-based Brides magazine visited the lovely Tickled Pink shop, she declared: “Tickled Pink is a joy to visit”

‘Wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, mums’ outfits and formal wear for the fellas are all there for the choosing’ The editor of Brides magazine had called in unannounced as a judge in a national customer service competition, which happily, Tickled Pink’s wonderful staff went on to win. Amazingly, Tickled Pink are this year celebrating their thirtieth birthday, and that means some ten thousand brides, and grooms, their families and friends have all been cared for in the same attentive way. Wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, mums’ outfits and formal wear for the fellas are all there for the choosing, and in more than a nod to our digital age, the company website www.tickledpinkbridal.co.uk has been updated to make it mobile-friendly, so you can even browse on the go. You’ll also find all their labels and best-selling dresses on their facebook page @tickledpinkbridal. When Tickled Pink choose designers for their bridal collection, they attend the latest catwalk shows to mull over the new designs and always have brides’ choices right at the top of their list. Ronald Joyce, Maggie Sottero, Rebecca Ingram, Ellis and Romantica – a perfect combination of

labels – and they make sure that every dress waiting for you is fresh and current. For your bridesmaids, the Tickled Pink team love what Dessy, Ebony Rose and Ellis have to offer; so much choice in terms of colours and styles. For the very young all-stars, they have created two lovely designs in Millie and Mollie that can be themed to your colours. As for the so essential accessories, they are all there to complete the picture. Those wonderful mums are embraced too, with elegant and unique creations from John Charles, Veni Infantino and Ann Balon. When it comes to the men’s party looking totally smart and stylish, there’s no better place than their Mens’ Hire department. Such a choice – and as an independent retailer, Tickled Pink hold all their own stock – over 500 suits in fact, so what the guys try on for an individual fit, is the suit they will wear on the wedding day. { BEAUTY }

all made up The dress is sorted, you’ve had your hair trial and you are almost ready for the most important day of your life. It’s now time to sort out your bridal makeup.

DIY make-up ideas Here are our top tips for wedding makeup that will last all day.

Put your eye makeup on first

Moisturise first

Use a natural blush

This is the key to having your makeup look pristine because it creates a good base for your primer to go on. Moisturising will get rid of dry skin, so your foundation won’t flake up when you apply it, and it’s just generally good practice. Get the right moisturiser for your skin type as some can make it too oily and that’s the last thing you want on your wedding day.

Use a decent primer

You want your foundation to go on smooth, so a primer needs to be applied first. If you can find a waterproof, eye and face primer, go for those. Don’t use the same primer for your eyes, lips and face; different skin needs different primers.

Get a waterproof mascara primer

Waterproof mascara goes without saying because when the tears fall, (and chances are, they WILL fall,) you need to prevent any running to keep your makeup on point. You can buy waterproof mascara primers to apply before your mascara. Speaking from experience, we can tell you that these are a MUST for your wedding makeup and will pretty much eradicate any chance of runny mascara even if you’re the most teary-eyed bride ever.

28 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

This will allow for any drop off that goes onto the rest of your face to be cleared up before foundation application.

This helps give a natural flush illusion to your makeup look. If you’re not sure how to apply, just smile so the apples of your cheeks show and that’s where you apply! Be sure to blend this lightly into the temple, but don’t use too much. If you don’t use enough, you can always add but you can’t take away.

Apply foundation with a brush or sponge

Never use your fingers to avoid spreading bacteria across your face. Some foundations blend better with sponge or brush, so practice with each and do what you feel is best.

Accentuate your eyebrows

Whether it’s gel, pencil or pomade, your eyebrows are an important focal point to your look. There’s no need to go overboard and DON’T go outside your natural brow line, but fill in your brow naturally as it will completely transform your makeup look.

Look after your lips

You’re going to be doing a lot of talking and smiling on your wedding day, so your lips need to be ready for action. Before any lip stick, stain

or pencil, apply lip balm to your lips while you’re doing your other makeup. It will have time to sink in and moisturise your lips, so when you’re ready to apply, your lipstick goes on smoothly with no flaking.

Don’t forget your Decolletage!

Your face is attached to your neck, so it’s common sense to blend your makeup into your neck and collarbone area. Don’t fall victim to makeup 101 and make sure you blend blend blend! The last thing you want is for your wedding photos to come out two-tone because your neck is a different colour to your face.

Fix it all in place

An often forgotten part of your bridal makeup, fixing spray is the last piece to making your makeup last all day and night. After everything is applied, hold the spray 15-20 cm away from your face and spray 1-3 times to set your makeup. Now it’s not going anywhere!

Test it

With any new makeup product, make sure you do a skin patch test BEFORE your wedding day. If you have a makeup artist, they will naturally ensure this, but if you’re going it alone, test it first! SHORT AND SWEET

{ HAIR }

Whether you have blonde locks or brunette curls, your bridal hairstyle can completely transform your wedding day look. One thing is clear, don’t go for something you would never normally see yourself having just because it’s your wedding day. Set realistic goals about how your hair should look on your big day and talk with your hairdresser about the best hairstyle for you. We’ve put together a few ideas for your bridal style, depending on the length of your hair, so you can ensure you have the perfect hair style for the best day of your life.

SHORT Loose curls pair really well with short hair and can add volume and depth to your bridal style. If you have shorter more pixie cut style hair, keep it simple and accent it with your hair accessories. For a more alternative look, opt for vintage curls that can be done with most short hair styles.

IN THE MIDDLE

When it comes to your wedding hair, it’s all about the right style for you.

MID-LENGTH Up-do’s are a favourite among ladies with mid-length hair. Go for a side swept chignon for elegance and glamour or have fun with a curly styled up-do for a soft and more natural bridal look. If you’re looking for a more free-flowing hair style, soft big curls add effortless chic to your wedding day look and a diamante pin brushing one side back adds an extra bit of sparkle.

Feel free to go wild here, as messy waves are always a winner with long hair. Another popular choice is to have your hair styled to one side, with loose curls draped down one shoulder. This adds a feature to your style and can be accessorised with a glittering hair comb. Long haired ladies can go for up do’s too; in fact, fishtail plaits in particular look stunning as a bridal hair style and with a bit of back combing, you can add more height to your do too. Whichever style you go for, it’s important to have a hair trial before the wedding and if you’re planning to grow your hair, inform them of this too so they can plan ahead for your chosen style.

Be jewelled Whether you’re a glamour queen or an understated bride, choosing the jewellery for your wedding is key to perfecting your bridal look. Here are a few things to think about when choosing your wedding jewellery.

With a dress to match

Complement your bridal hair

If you’ve gone for an updo, you might want some statement long draping earrings to accentuate your style. Whereas if you have a down hair style, studs may be the wiser option; they will look elegant without getting tangled in your curls. If you have a hair accessory, keep in mind to match your jewellery with this too, so everything pairs well together and creates the perfect finish.

Less is more

Even the most magpie-eyed of brides understand that the less is more approach can work wonders, especially if you have an intricately designed dress. You don’t want to have too much going on that will take the eye away from what’s important. Instead, why not opt for just one statement piece of jewellery to draw attention, or, a delicate, more understated jewellery set, so you’re fully accessorised and ready to wed without looking over the top.

Colour

Why not choose an accent colour from your dress or bridal bouquet, and accessorise your jewellery to match? If your bouquet has red roses, go for ruby red stones to carry on the colour scheme. You could even choose jewellery to match your eye colour, such as blue opal or aquamarine for blue eyes to really make them pop.

Hat’s off The mother of the bride has a key role within the wedding. She has been by the bride’s side from the very beginning, helping her with choosing her dress, writing the guest list and acting as a sounding board when things get too hectic. So it’s only right that she looks fabulous on your wedding day. To help with that, we’ve picked out some fabulous hair fascinators and formal headwear to complete the mother of the bride look.

Mum’s the word The Mother of the bride’s role is a key one. She is the matriarch of the family and the guests will look to her for guidance and support on your wedding day.

Top Tips

for the Mother of the Bride Help write the guest list

Your mum should write down anyone from her side of the family who she would like to attend, so the bride and groom don’t miss out on any important individuals.

Help the bride choose her wedding dress

Go dress shopping with the bride and offer advice on the best style to suit; you should make the final decision but your mum will give her honest opinion on the dresses you try on. You want to feel like a million dollars on your wedding day and your mum can help make that happen.

Advise on venue, invites and any other aspect of wedding planning

Your mum should be there to help you find the

36 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Large Formal Hat

For something that’s a feature piece of the mother of the bride outfit, a large formal hat will add height to her silhouette. Choose from wide brimmed hats and vary how they sit, whether they’re central or tilted on the side of the head. A large format hat adds glamour and elegance to a mother of the bride look and shows she is not afraid to show off her unique style.

perfect wedding venue, and also help with any of the planning process. It helps to have a different influence who can see things from outside the bride and groom bubble, and she can help give you clarity on what’s really important when you’re stressed out over wedding stationery or décor. She doesn’t have to be in charge of organising everything, but ask for her help where you really need it.

Prepare buttonholes for key members of the wedding party

This includes best man, ushers and any other key wedding guests in the bridal party. If needed, she can show the guests the correct way to wear a buttonhole; on the left for men (above your heart) and on the right for women. Women also wear the buttonhole with the flowers pointing downwards, with men having them pointing up towards their shoulder.

Be ready early & help the bride get ready

You may be feeling extremely nervous and your mum is here to help you with anything you need; helping you into your dress, fixing your tiara and even being there to listen to any last minute worries. You will probably need your mum more than you realise, so it’s important for her to be there if you need her. If she’s ready early, the mother of the bride can also allow time for any pre-wedding photos.

Keep a pack of tissues handy on the day

This goes without saying, but a pack of tissues will be needed on your wedding day. Your mum

can also hand them out if necessary to other guests who may have forgotten.

Be ready to receive the guests Your mum will be acting as hostess while you get married. She will help the ushers guide your guests into the ceremony room, and again into the reception. She should meet your guests and in particular any who have travelled from further afield to welcome them to the festivities. Your mum can help everyone feel relaxed and at ease for a great day to come.

Prepare a wedding toast More in common nowadays, the mother of the bride will give a speech at the wedding reception. Her speech is to welcome the guests, share happy memories from the bride’s childhood, talk about the happy couple and toast to their happiness.

Enjoy herself After all the planning and preparation that your mum will have no doubt helped with, this is her time to relax and enjoy herself. Tell her to grab a drink and dance the night away.

Look after the wedding gifts while the newlyweds are on their honeymoon After the festivities have ended, make sure all the gifts are kept at the mother of the bride’s home. She can look after them while you’re swept away on your honeymoon, and you can enjoy opening them all when you get back.

‘a feather fascinator is an excellent focal point of your outfit’ Floral Clip Hair Piece Perfect for Spring and Summer weddings, a floral hair piece is a nice touch to a summery outfit. This could also be paired with the bridesmaids’ bouquets. A floral piece can either be situated on a hair band, or as a clip to be attached in just the right position to suit her hairstyle.

Diamante Hair Comb

These work well with more elegant weddings and particularly with an updo. If your mum is a glitz and sparkle kind of person but doesn’t want a large head piece, a diamante hair comb is the perfect addition and can also be accessorised with their hand bag and jewellery. Style this with a chignon for an understated, yet stunning finish.

Floral/Bow Hat Fascinator

For the demure mother of the bride that wants a subtle hair piece, a teardrop shaped sinamay base with an oversized bow or flower creates the illusion of a large headpiece without going overboard and adds structure to a hairstyle. These are ideally suited to garden weddings, where the feel is relaxed, and not demanding of your best hat for the races.

Unique Bespoke Headwear

Feather Fascinator

Depending on the theme of your wedding, a feather fascinator could be a fun choice for the mother of the bride. Incorporating colours from your bouquet with different lengths and feather curves, a feather fascinator is an excellent focal point of your outfit, and is a great choice for woodland weddings! They also work well paired with netting to drape over the face, which adds a nice vintage touch.

{ HEALTH & FITNESS }

A change of Lifestyle

‘Week by week I was gradually losing weight and everything became second nature.’

Heather Tiffany, of I Do Magazine, wanted a big change to overhaul her lifestyle for the better. Here, she talks about the highs and lows and how she boosted her health and fitness with the help of Inner Unit. “I guess I might be having a mid-life crisis. If so, then exercise is certainly cheaper than a fancy sports car or getting a tattoo that I’d regret six months later. Maybe this is the realisation that I am getting a bit older, have put a bit of weight on and feel like I am on a downward spiral. Most women can relate to how I feel – it’s when your clothes become a bit tight so you buy a bigger size. Before you know it, you’ve gone up two dress sizes and the mirror is your worst enemy. After a Christmas of over-eating and too much drinking, it was time to do something about how I felt. I had already had experience of seeing a personal trainer but found this to be a bit intimidating. I wanted an exercise regime from someone who understood me and the results I wanted – which, to be honest, I wasn’t even sure about myself. After doing some research, I came across Inner Unit. The website testimonials all spoke of great results but I was still sceptical – that’s just how I am. I gave them a call and had a 30-minute chat with Richard. Still sceptical, he did however put me at ease and made me realise I was no different to anyone else. After 12 weeks working with Richard I hit all my targets but I want to share with you my journey and all its high’s and low’s.

I was back in control. The 12-week course I was embarking on looked at everything – food, sleep, the body and mind set. It was about making lifestyle changes which could be maintained afterwards.

SIGNING UP

By this time I had stopped thinking about my evening glass of wine – so a result!

By signing up to the training plan, I already felt I had hit a milestone.

38 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

THE BEGINNING

The first week I was on a high! Filling in a food diary certainly makes you stop and think. I also took my measurements, weight and the dreaded `before’ photographs. I never thought I ate badly and always liked the healthy option. My biggest downfall was a glass of wine in the evening. After a busy day at work, my head would be spinning with work and family life. I would finally sit down about 8.30pm with a glass of wine to relax me, ready for going to bed. That glass of wine was my bad habit! My first session looked at food and eating habits. My first challenge was to cut down on bread and not be tempted to manage with a sandwich for tea, if I was working late, saying ‘I didn’t have time for a proper meal’. The big test was Richard asking me to go for 28 days without any alcohol. This was a challenge but I actually found the biggest issue was other people asking me why I wasn’t drinking which seemed to upset them, more than me.

WEEKS 2-3

I also began to plan my meals for the coming week. With having young children, it was important to plan ahead and fit in with the whole family. As for the training sessions, this was stepped up a and more varied than the first weeks. At the time I was quite nervous about what exercise I would be doing, and not really looking forward to it. However once I got started, I did relax and actually enjoyed it, you do feel a great buzz after exercise. Finding out I had lost 1kg (2lbs) gave me a massive boost, although it seemed eating was on my mind all the time. I suppose my new eating regime would become a habit and way of life – but not yet.

WEEK 4-5

Took my measurements – no change – so felt a little disheartened, although I was feeling much better about myself. One of the biggest changes was going to bed earlier to get Richard’s recommendation of eight hours sleep. Sleeping improved although I still had bad nights and probably averaged 7 hours, tossing and turning with work on my mind. My training sessions were going well and I enjoyed the resistance

‘If anything my diet was more varied’

training. Richard made some tweaks to my diet and I began to get into a better routine of meal planning. Drinking more water was a challenge in itself but like everything else, it becomes a routine. I felt better and my skin also improved.

WEEKS 6-12

As the weeks passed, the training intensified but it was gradual and I was loving it. Abstaining from alcohol was not an issue and it didn’t bother me at all. Week by week I was gradually losing weight and everything became second nature. If anything, my diet was more varied. What I found was that Richard didn’t tell me what to do – he guided me. He wanted me to choose the right lifestyle so I could maintain it afterwards. My 12 weeks are now complete and the healthy choices I have made are the right ones for me. My target was to lose 7lb, but I ended up losing 10lb, cutting my waist line down 7cm. It’s all about small changes.... and guess what? I can still have an odd piece of cake or an occasional glass of wine.”

Getting into

great shape at Inner Unit, Barnsley It’s the weight loss regime that you have been waiting for. You know the situation: not enough exercise, poor diet, excess weight, low self-esteem. Well, not any more – Richard Wood is waiting to help you get your life back on track and reveal a new you. His new online fitness programme, run via his website www.innerunit.co.uk is perfect for all ages and both sexes, but so far the vast majority of his clients have been women. Richard, who has been in the fitness industry for eight years and is a qualified personal trainer based in South Yorkshire, said: “The fitness programme has been developed to work the mind in conjunction with the body. It’s all about giving people the motivation to get into new and improved eating habits and take more exercise. Often this holistic approach, which looks at the individual’s whole lifestyle, doesn’t mean making radical changes to your diet, exercise and life but rather, just a few small tweaks to get on the right track.’’ After an initial four-week period, Richard’s clients are already well on their way to improved fitness levels and an all-round improved lifestyle. Done seriously and correctly, this programme offers long lasting change which will make each individual feel more alive, healthier, fitter and raring to face everything life brings. Richard’s online programme has been very well received – particularly by women who feel they have reached a certain point in life and are ready for change. He said: “Everyone who does my fitness programme also needs the self-motivation to start. Getting

fitter and healthier is something that you have to want to do. You need the motivation for change. The programme will succeed as long as you want it to. The system won’t work for you unless you really want to change your lifestyle.’’ Not only is the fitness programme beneficial for each individual but the changes in eating, fitness and lifestyle are often passed down to the families as well. If mum eats better, then so does the whole family. The programme operates with a series of coaching sessions and advice on eating better, cutting down on bad habits such as alcohol, smoking etc. It is generally found to attract the over-30s age group. Richard believes that most women struggle with three issues: •Being overwhelmed by the range of diets and not knowing what to believe anymore •Not enough time in the day, leading to feelings of stress and confusion about eating plans and exercise programmes •Feeling disconnected from themselves and no longer recognising the figure in the mirror, leading to feeling unattractive and old before their time’ Richard’s programme will help you get into the best shape of your life and give you new found confidence. Many women, he says, have already tried the gym and failed or become yo-yo dieters, losing weight and then putting it all back on. This fitness programme is the answer many have been waiting for.

A night to remember! A fantastic evening was had by all at I Do’s annual Wedding Awards celebrating local wedding suppliers and supporting a local charity. Now in its third year, the I Do Wedding Awards have become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the local wedding industry’s calendar. The stunning Ballroom at Sheffield City Hall once again played host to this glamorous evening as the top wedding suppliers from the Yorkshire, Humberside and East Midlands regions came together to celebrate their collective successes. The I Do Wedding Awards are a celebration of local wedding suppliers; our way of enabling newlyweds to reward their suppliers for all their hard work, the unsung heroes who go the extra mile, working untiringly in the background to make a couple’s dream day exceptional.

The stunning Art Deco Ballroom at Sheffield City Hall played host to the event

Decided entirely by the votes of the brides and grooms who have personally used these wedding suppliers, the 2017 awards saw 333 entrants, with 111 making the finals and 23 being announced as category winners. In true hollywood glitz style, a red carpet arrival and champagne reception welcomed the evening’s guests and made them feel like a million dollars as they mingled and excitedly conversed about the festivities to come. Host for the evening, Capital FM’s Jojo, welcomed over 250 guests to a delicious four course meal whilst local musician, James Sunderland took to the stage, entertaining with his soothing sounds on the keyboard. TALK ABOUT A CHARITABLE EVENT!

Part of the awards, as well as honouring our local wedding suppliers, is to raise much needed funds for local charities. The chosen charity for 2017 was the amazing Newlife, who provide specialist equipment for children with disabilities and terminal illness. A charity prize draw was held during the evening and guests were invited to show their support with a minimum donation of £10. This got them a Willy Wonka style prize chocolate bar, in which 20 winning golden tickets were hidden to win prizes donated by our wedding suppliers. In total, we raised over a staggering £2000 for this very worthy cause. A huge thank you goes out to all that donated and we would particularly like to thank the following companies for their generously donated prizes: Ye Olde Bell, Bridefayre, Natalija. Co Event Planning, Rosey’s Beauty Lounge, Bethan Victoria Makeup Artist, Graces Goodies Boutique, Amp N Decks Disco, SIV, MDG Entertainment, Stu Ganderton Wedding Photography, Beau Hair, The Pheasantry Brewery, Dunelm Glass, White Rose Cake Design, Something New and Those Finishing Touches. To find out more about Newlife and how it supports families near you, go to www.newlifecharity. co.uk. It was then time for the grand event itself, where the 23 well-deserved winners were announced. Fighting off tough

competition, they collected their trophies to the delight and applause of their fellow suppliers. Each category was very closely contested, so everyone who made it to the evening’s shortlist should be extremely proud of their achievements and proud to be an I Do finalist. The beautiful art-deco ballroom was enhanced with decor and accessories thanks to Wedding Venue Lighting who provided five foot light up ‘I Do’ Letters and a magic mirror photobooth with all proceeds going to Newlife. Simply Elegant Occasions dressed the chairs whilst tables were adorned with stunning silver candelabra’s courtesy of All Occasions, Fleur Chappelle and Event Design By Hayley Smith. The evening’s main sponsor, Wakefield-based, ICO Entertainment, were in charge of the technical aspects of the evening, making sure everything ran without a hitch. The live Twitter feed proved a real hit, with everyone tweeting images, well wishes and congratulations using the hashtag #idoawards17.

WITH THANKS… The 2017 I Do Wedding Awards made for a truly unforgettable night with special thanks to the wedding suppliers who entered, the brides and grooms who voted, the sponsors and donations, the technical team, venue staff and everyone else who helped make this year’s awards. Thank you; you helped make it a spectacular evening.

Invitation ideas

Your wedding invitations are your chance to secure your wedding date with your guests. Here’s our definitive guide to getting the most out of your invites and all the added bits that go with them too.

SAVE THE DATE This is a great idea as it lets your potential guests know with plenty of notice of the date of your wedding, so they can keep the date free. Send your Save the Dates out around 6 months before your wedding; this allows for any

potential holiday bookings and time off to be worked around. Bear in mind that if you’re planning a destination wedding, to send your Save the Dates out even earlier to leave time for guests to save and book more time off.

{ INVITATIONS }

WHAT GOES ON A WEDDING INVITE? You’d be surprised at how many key things get missed off the wedding invite. So here’s what your invite should mention: - Yours and your fiance’s names - The date and time of your wedding (both ceremony and reception)

- The location and full address of the wedding (and reception venue if different to the ceremony) - Accommodation suggestions - Dress code - RSVP date

Hand Painted Invitations & Stationery Venue Decor Hire

WHEN TO SEND OUT INVITES If you have sent Save the Date cards, opt to send out your wedding invites 2-3 months before your big day. This gives

your guests time to book holidays, sort accommodation and find childcare if need be, to make sure they can attend your wedding. creating truly unique invitations which are individually hand painted, and a range of rustic venue décor to hire

RSVP CARDS A nice added touch, RSVP postcards are a lovely idea for your guests to reply back with saying ‘yes I can’ or ‘sorry I can’t’ to your wedding date. It also gives you quite a rush as you start to see them appear through

the letter box in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Make sure you put the RSVP deadline on these too, so you hear back from everyone before any final catering or seating arrangements need to be made.

{ GIFT IDEAS }

the perfect gift When planning your wedding, it’s important not to forget about those members of your bridal party who have helped you throughout the planning process. The bridesmaids, groomsmen, mother, father, best man and flower girl all play a part in helping your wedding run smoothly, so it’s good wedding etiquette to show your appreciation and give them a gift to say thank you. Our little gift guide should help make wedding gift buying super simple, for every type of wedding guest.

BRIDESMAIDS/MAID OF HONOUR This is a perfect chance to buy your Maid of Honour & bridesmaids something that they can wear on your wedding day, as well as afterwards. Bracelets, earrings and necklaces are all a good choice, but don’t make it too over the top so they can’t wear it after the event. For an extra special maid of honour gift, why not personalise a bracelet for them with a message of thanks for being your right hand woman on your wedding

48 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

day. Personalised wine glasses/ hangers for the bridesmaids’ dresses are also a good idea.

GROOMSMEN/BEST MAN/FATHER OF THE BRIDE OR GROOM Nothing beats a pair of personalised cufflinks for a groomsmen/best man/father of the bride gift. They will really appreciate it and can wear them on your wedding day, as well as any smart occasion in the future. You could also buy matching socks for all your groomsmen, which would make for some pretty funky wedding photos too! As an extra gift for the father of the bride or groom / best man, an engraved silver pocket watch is a great idea. If you give it to them before the wedding, you can make sure they get the groom to the ceremony on time!

{ GIFT IDEAS }

FLOWER GIRL/PAGE MOTHER OF THE BOY/ USHERS BRIDE/GROOM For the little people at your wedding, try and go for something personal to them that you know they’ll like. Whether it’s a little heart-shaped necklace, or a stuffed animal or even a personalised tote bag for them to put their colouring books in. Anything that shows you care and appreciate them playing key roles at your special day. Or you could even give them a special keepsake for when they’re older, such as a personalised spoon with a heartfelt message on.

Large bunches of flowers are a simple yet effective way of showing your gratitude

Chances are the mother of the bride/groom has helped a lot during the planning of your wedding, whether it’s with the invites or making sure the groom is ready for the big day. So it’s important to make her see how much you appreciate her. Large bunches of flowers are a simple yet effective way of showing your gratitude and smell wonderful too. For something that will last a lot longer, opt for a vintage style jewellery box, engraved with a loving message, or a crystal wine glass for her to toast your happy marriage. If you really want to go all out to thank the mother of the bride/ groom, get her an overnight stay in a posh hotel, or a spa day, so she can relax and unwind after the big day.

GIFT TABLE SURPRISES Now we’ve covered gifts for your wedding attendants, have you made sure gifts from your guests to you will be kept safe on your wedding day? Everything is organised; the food, the décor, the music; it’s all sorted. Why does it feel like something’s missing? Your guests start to arrive carrying all shapes and sizes of wedding gift and you realise, you don’t have a gift table set up. Wedding gifts and cards are strewn everywhere and the room just looks a mess. Your wedding gift table should not be forgotten as it helps keep all your wedding gifts together and safe. If you’re unsure of where to place this, a good choice is near the entrance to your reception and off to the side, so as guests arrive, it is the first thing they see and they can leave their gifts all in one place.

It’s important to also have somewhere for the cards to go, as some guests may want these to be kept secure (if they contain money). A Royal Mail post box is a great way of keeping your wedding cards safe as it can be locked with a key which you can keep hold of, to make sure everything is kept safe until you wish to open it.

{ CAKES }

tiersof joy The wedding cake is arguably the main focal point of any wedding day, aside from the bride and groom of course.

50 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

Cake trends for 2017/18 There’s some new big hitters on the list this year as well as some old favourites.

WOODLAND

Without a doubt the hottest cake trend we’ve seen on the wedding fayre and exhibition scene is a complete cake mash up, why have one when you can have four, right? If you like gold, marbled, black and lace, Why not go for a different design or even flavour on each tier? A real feast for the eyes, lets just hope your guests don’t want to sample a piece of each!

Brand new for 2017 is the woodland and botanical style of wedding cake which is now sweeping rustic weddings across the nation. The botanical style cake sees fresh greenery and succulents splitting each tier, to give a real sense of the outdoors, but with more cake! We’ve also seen woodland cakes with fondant, carved, coloured and painted to look like tree bark and laden with real or fondant flowers.

GEODE

RUFFLED

The Geode cake attracted our attention last year when it was just beginning to appear in Pinterest boards and Twitter feeds across the land. Now, a fully fledged trend, the geode cake is a stunning addition to your special day and really looks like a gem…see what I did there? Inspired by geology, interlaced with precious metals and stones, the Geode cake sparkles away as the perfect centrepiece to your wedding.

Still a popular trend for it’s easy-on-the-eye nature and subtle contemporary twist. Be it a single ruffled tier, top to toe ruffles, big ruffles in bold hues or muted colours and toned down ruffles, to make more of a uniformed straighter ruffled look, we love them!

{ CAKES }

METALLIC CAKES

Still high on the list for wedding cake trends is the stunning metallic cake. It dazzles and sparkles and is definitely a conversation starter for any wedding. From top to toe gold to inter-mingled layers, combined with tiers of smooth pastel colours, lace, marbled or even floral will make for a wonderful mash up of a wedding cake designed to stop passers-by. Silver, gold and now copper are proving popular with tiers being hand-painted or even adorned with edible sequins.

ALL WHITE WEDDING CAKES

This timeless trend can adopt a classic or contemporary feel. It goes with any theme and can be adapted in any way to fit your wedding. So simple and yet absolutely stunning, a white tiered wedding cake commands attention from everyone who sees it and exudes elegance upon sight.

THE ‘NEW NAKED’ CAKES

Another popular trend from 2016 is the naked wedding cake. Not one for faltering, this style has been switched up for 2017 with the addition of more buttercream icing to create a nearly naked cake. These are also being mixed with fondant layers to create a contrast between cake tiers and yet still have the naked feel for any rustic style of wedding.

OTHER STYLES STILL HIGH UP ON THE HIT LIST ARE: DRIP CAKES

This dripping down icing effect is just gorgeous teamed with the naked or even new naked style cake.

BUTTERCREAM

A step up from the naked or new naked cake is the no fondant, unfinished, buttercream cake, unsmoothed, ribbed or flawlessly finished.

LACE

Let’s not forget good old fashioned lace, this stunningly intricate detail looks beautiful wrapped around the tiers.

HAND PAINTED

Painted and illustrated cakes are still on top form as edible works of art, from marbelised patterns to intricate floral detailing.

CAKE TABLES

Again we say, why have one when you can have four or more...? Some couples are choosing to have an array of sweet bakes, you could even invite your guests to donate their favourite bakes, be it lemon drizzle or full on chocolate gateau.

www.ido-magazine.co.uk - 51

{ FLOWERS }

floral inspiration What’s hot in the world of wedding flowers? Colour From peaches to pale pinks, blush was the number one choice for brides last year. This year, blush is still a mainstay for wedding flowers, but it has also been paired with bright greens and even metallic gold, bronze and copper tones to bring the bridal bouquet into 2017/18. On the rise is pure white flowers, simply beautiful and match in with any wedding theme.

Bouquet Style ‘Wild’ bouquet styles are increasing in popularity for the new wedding season. Brides love the natural feel of a rustic looking bouquet with gypsophilia and greenery elegantly draping down. Succulents are also starting to make an appearance with their pale green tones to compliment any wedding theme. A brand new trend in wedding flowers is utilising unusual materials in your bouquet. Vintage buttons and brooches can now be

found nestled among fresh flowers to create a glamourous touch and sparkle for everyone to enjoy.

Table Centres If you’re incorporating flowers into your table centres, you have an array of colours to choose from that can pair well with the theme of your wedding. A popular new trend is focussing more on the greenery of leaves and branches to create a natural, laid back feel for a wedding. Examples of draped greenery can be found framing entry ways into a wedding reception or gathered along the wedding cake table. Another popular trend that sees no sign of moving; log slices and clusters of small vases filled with fresh flowers are a DIY bride’s dream and look beautiful, yet effortless. Then roses, carnations or lilies atop tall glass jars and vases add height to your table centres and create a focal point for the room.

Q&A How do I choose my florist?

Florists each have their own style, so it’s important to be able to match it with your own for fabulous wedding flowers that will impress. Have a few consultations with different florists to get a feel for their style, how they work and whether they’re a right fit for you. Don’t feel pressured into going with the first florist you see; it’s your wedding and it’s your money, so you have a right to browse before you settle on a decision.

Are fresh wedding flowers expensive?

This one depends on the time of year, flower type and whether you want a big flowery wedding, or a more muted understated wedding. If you give your florist a budget that you have in mind, they will be able to work with you to make sure they give you what you want at a cost you can handle.

How do I know how many flowers I will need?

Your florist will be able to guide you based on how many bridesmaids you have, how many guests will be in attendance and how big your reception venue is.

When should I book my wedding florist?

This really depends on what type of flowers you’re going for, but most brides tend to book 6-8 months before the big day. By time you will have booked your venue and should have a rough idea of what sort of flowers you’re wanting. Some florists let you book a year or more in advance, which is great because you can check out all the pretty seasonal flowers and take time in deciding which you like best.

Check him out Sometimes it might seem like a wedding is all about the bride, but it’s important to remember that the groom takes centre stage too, so here’s some ideas to get your chap looking dapper on the big day.

WHAT’S TRENDING? CHECK IT OUT

A recent growing trend in wedding suits is check. Brought right up to date with form fitting three piece suits, check is set to be the next tweed. It works well for both formal and casual weddings and adds another aesthetic to the look of the groom.

FABRIC

Linen has found its niche in the market for groomswear, during the summer months along with Tweed, which is still a firm favourite, but updated from traditional greens and browns, to blues, greys and pastels. Mix and match fabrics with a colour contrasting waistcoat and suit jacket are a predicted trend that will see its way long into 2018. No more matching three piece suits; this next year will be all about switching it up.

Just like all the colours of the rainbow, 2018 looks set to introduce a bolder colour scheme for groomswear, with purples, bright blues and pinks all taking centre stage. It might seem gimmicky, but these can work really

56 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

well on the right type of groom. So if yours is the adventurous type, let them shine in their boldest and brightest attire to stun you and your guests.

NOT SO FORMAL

Gone are the days when a three piece suit and cravat or top hat and tails were a must. Many grooms are choosing to take the relaxed approach; beige linen trousers and white linen shirts worn without ties, waistcoats and jackets teamed with dark denim jeans and designer two pieces are all becoming increasingly popular.

FOOTWEAR TO IMPRESS

Changing trends of footwear for the new wedding season mean that traditional black formal shoes are being swapped out for lighter browns. These stand as a contrast to the wedding suit with tan brogues being a particular favourite among current trends. Personalised Converse are also another mainstay for 2017/18 with brides and grooms matching their wedding footwear for the first dance.

SHOPPING TIPS: Ok, so it’s traditional for the best man to organise the shopping trip, but some grooms choose to take their leading lady to help steer them in the right direction. Once the grooms suit is chosen, the groomsmen can go along and choose theirs.

COMFORT

Naturally, comfort should be at the top of the groom’s list when suit shopping; because depending on the time you get married, the groom will be wearing their suit for a minimum of 10 hours. That’s a long time to be uncomfortable. So when trying on suits, get them to walk around and sit down and see how they feel with what they’re wearing. Is the waistcoat too tight? Is the jacket long enough? These are the things they should be thinking about when looking for comfort.

BREATHABILITY

To save your groom from getting a little hot under the collar, go for a 100% cotton or wool/ wool blend fabric. Wool is the most breathable fabric, so although you might think it would cause overheating, it’s actually great at regulating temperature and keeping the groom cool as a cucumber.

COLOUR

The most important aspect of a groom’s suit is always the colour. For the suit itself, blue is still a hot favourite amongst grooms for 2017/18 followed closely by pale grey. The chosen ensemble should match in with the overall wedding theme, which can easily be achieved with a matching tie or waistcoat if opting for a three piece.

The chosen one It’s not all about debauchery on the stag party as some may suggest. There are important tasks that the best man should carry out to make sure the groom is ready to wed on the big day.

THE BEST MAN’S ROLE: Offer a Pint

Whilst the bride is in wedding planning mode and depending on how involved the groom is with favours and table plans, it’s the best man’s job to help the groom keep his sanity during the process. Just as the bride will have friends to keep her from imploding, the best man should offer to take the groom out for a drink or two. They can then even offer advice for any sticking points that the happy couple have come across in the planning process.

The Stag Party

Make this a night to remember, but not for the wrong reasons. The groom wants to enjoy his last night of freedom, but doesn’t want to do anything that may jeopardise his chances of getting married. Get your fellow groomsmen to help organise and spread the cost evenly between everyone who attends, including chipping in for the groom too.

Buying the Suit

It’s the role of the best man to gather the other groomsmen together and coordinate their matching suits, as well as offering advice on what the

groom should wear. It’s your job to make sure he looks dapper ready for his big day. It could be a good idea to consult with the bride to ensure everyone is happy.

The Groom’s Arrival This is the best man’s most important job of the entire wedding; make sure the groom turns up on time. They will play chauffeur to the groom and get him to the ceremony in plenty of time to make sure he’s there before the bride and to greet any guests.

Ring Bearer

Keep hold of the rings until the bride and groom exchange vows. Know where they are at all times and do not lose the precious cargo!

The Speech

The main event for the best man, the speech, it’s been written and rehearsed and now it’s the big performance. Give thanks to everyone who attended and offer a few quips and funny stories about the groom. Keep it clean if children are present and toast the bride and groom!

Ring shopping

Top tips

Here’s 5 things to think about when choosing your wedding bands to make sure you get the perfect rings to suit you. UNIQUE SHAPE Many still don’t think of this when ring shopping, but it’s important to remember that you will have an engagement ring on the finger where your wedding band will sit. So shaping the ring around your engagement ring is a good idea and it will help prevent damage from uneven wear and tear.

View our prices and packages online...

Start the most memorable journey of your lives in one of our timeless yet iconic VW classics.

BESPOKE DESIGN If you want something extra special and sentimental, a bespoke ring is a good choice. You can work with the jeweller to design your very own ring that suits your personality. Couples can even bring in any gold they have, for example a mother’s ring or an item of jewellery from a deceased relative, and have these melted down into wedding bands. This way, your rings will be entirely personal to you, and using your own gold cuts costs as well! COST A biggie for budget conscious brides and grooms, the cost should be agreed from the very beginning. Before you even look for your wedding rings, you should have a

set budget in mind to stick to; after all, the rings aren’t the only cost you will have during wedding planning! METAL TYPE The type of metal you go for is key; bear in mind that your engagement ring will be a certain metal, so try not to go for a harder metal for your wedding ring. This could cause premature wear on the softer metal of your engagement ring and no one wants that. There are a variety of metals to choose from; yellow gold, white gold, platinum, titanium, palladium, rose gold… whatever your heart desires. STRENGTH If you/your other half have a job where you use your hands a lot, think about the strength of metal for your wedding ring and how much it could get knocked about when working. For example, if you use chemicals in your job, you need to make sure your ring can stand up to them; as with construction jobs, platinum is extremely hard wearing and doesn’t scratch easily like yellow gold, so would be a good choice here.

{ RECEPTION IDEAS }

Choosing your

perfect

wedding venue You’re engaged and have started the journey to planning your wedding. One of the first jobs to tick off is to find your ideal venue. From old manor houses and hotels, rustic barns, outdoor marquees and everything else, it’s important you choose the right venue for your wedding.

MARQUEE

If you’re looking for outdoor elegance, a marquee wedding is the venue for you. Similar in aesthetic to a tipi wedding, marquees are more of a formal affair. They tend to be fully enclosed and fully insulated so your guests are kept warm, meaning these can suit a wedding at any time of year. Marquees also usually have a real floor installed and are more of a permanent structure, so you can enjoy the feel of a venue, with the option of exploring outside if you wish.

HOTEL/MANOR HOUSE

For the traditional sit down meal, a hotel/ manor house is the obvious choice. Everything is taken

76 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

care of for you, from the waiter service to the accommodation. They are super convenient and also offer their venue as the perfect backdrop to complement your wedding theme, meaning you don’t have to start from scratch with your décor design. The only issue with these types of venue, is for the majority, they can be quite restrictive and don’t leave much room for creativity. If you really want to put your personal stamp on it, and have extras like mobile food vans, fireworks, magicians and other more ‘out there’ décor ideas, some hotels/ manor houses will cater to a certain point, but a tipi or marquee may be better suited.

BARNS

Rising in popularity in recent years, barns are a good halfway house to a venue and outdoor wedding. You have a permanent structure with enough freedom to style your wedding exactly how

you want. Many brides who want rustic weddings go for a barn venue. Exposed wooden beams and straw bales lend themselves well to this laidback country style wedding. You can also hire whatever catering you like at a barn, (owner permitting of course) and can really take the rustic vibe all the way with barn dancing, fairy lights and garlands hanging from the rafters.

You can also guarantee fantastic customer service, as it’s the restaurant’s chance to potentially gain lots of future business from happy wedding guests. The only downside with a restaurant is they won’t usually have a dedicated dancefloor area for guests to move onto after dining, so if this is what you want, you may end up having to hire another venue for your evening festivities.

RESTAURANT

Keep in mind how far your guests will have to travel for your wedding and try to cater for them as best you can; you want as many of them as possible to be able to attend your special day. Also, whichever venue style you go for, be sure to meet with the proprietors several times to make sure they are able to fully cater for what you have in mind. There’s nothing wrong with shopping around before you settle on your dream wedding venue.

Typically catering for smaller weddings due to the size of the venue, a restaurant is a good choice if you have an exact style of food in mind. We’re talking Indian, Chinese, Japanese; if you know what you like and want it done well, go for an authentic restaurant that cooks your favourite foods better than you could imagine. As food is the main focus of a restaurant, it won’t come second best to the other aspects of your wedding.

Reception Food ideas Your reception food is one of the best parts about a wedding and it’s your chance to put your stamp on it with your personal tastes. ELEGANCE

If it’s an elegant wedding you’re after and you’re not having the traditional sit down meal, there’s a variety of posh nosh for your guests to enjoy. Opt for menu choices such as asparagus spears wrapped in parma ham, afternoon tea style dishes, mouthwatering canapes and chocolate fountains for dessert to make your guests feel like they’re dining in opulence. For those with less of a sweet tooth, serve artisan cheeses from local suppliers with savoury crackers to really treat your guests.

RUSTIC

More suited to outdoor country weddings, the rustic feel can be extended to your wedding food choices. Go for pizza ovens, barbecues, hog roasts or pie and peas; all great additions for a rustic style wedding. The idea of self-service works really well here, and leaves your guests to gorge to their heart’s content. For dessert, layered cakes in mason jars add a rustic

twist to your sweet treat, and your guests will love delving into them! Check out The Rustic Pizza Co for handmade fresh pizzas at your service!

RETRO

Imagine all the colours of the rainbow in a retro feast and be brought back to childhood with these retro offerings. Think Ice Cream, Hot Dogs, Miniature Burgers, Sweet Carts, Popcorn and Candy floss machines. You’ll be like a kid at Christmas with all the retro possibilities, and they will be a great talking point with your guests. Be sure to check out Annie’s Vintage Sweet Emporium and Retroscoops for all your retro foodie desires come true!

GO INTERNATIONAL

If you like all varieties of food, then international cuisine is a great option. Tastes are ever evolving and wedding food is no different. From Indian to French, Japanese and Thai, the food choices are endless! Go for a savoury crepe starter, followed by a chicken madras main, then a handcrafted ice cream roll to cool your mouth. Sounds like a winner all round! Ice Queens have brought an authentically Thai dessert to the UK with their ice cream rolls, check them out. Also, take a look at Madame Crepe for a French take on your wedding reception food with their sweet and savoury crepes.

Seasonal wedding drinks

It’s not just all about the food at a wedding. The drinks are a welcome addition and act as an extension of your taste. Here we talk about the best tipples for a Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter wedding!

SPRING

Spring brings about imagery of fresh and floral flavours. Try gin with elderflower infused tonic, which has a crisp taste and light flavour that your wedding guests will enjoy. Or serve prosecco flutes with raspberries as decoration for a subtler Spring touch.

SUMMER

Summer is all about the fruity. The perfect summer tipple has to be Pimms & lemonade, mixed with mint and cucumber pieces. Or if you’re more of a cocktail kind of person, go for a strawberry daiquiri or orange infused sangria to tantalize your guests’ tastebuds.

AUTUMN

Autumn brings change in weather, and the colder nights start rolling in. So you can never go wrong with a spiced apple cider to warm your guests through as they dance the night away. Mix this with a spiced rum cocktail and you’re onto a winner!

WINTER

Winter means cold, whichever way you put it. So your guests need a warming drink to keep their spirits high; mulled wine is the ideal tipple for this. Anything that incorporates flavours of cinnamon, orange and winter berry flavours will work well with a winter wedding. You could even try variations on hot chocolate with marshmallows and cookies for dipping! Add a shot of Irish Liqueur for a more grown up flavour that will definitely warm your guests’ insides!

That’s entertainment Here are our top wedding entertainment suggestions to keep you and your guests entertained all night long on your special day. PHOTO BOOTHS

Always popular with all ages at weddings, Photo booths have had a makeover for this season. You can now get the classic booths, photo mirrors, Vintage booths and even campervan/taxi booths to entertain your guests. Whichever booth you choose, you can be sure of some fab photo memories to look back on. We have a variety of Photo booth suppliers who can cater for your wedding, whatever booth you’re after. Just4funPhotobooth, Yorkshire Booth Brothers Ltd, Photobooth4You, Photo Booth Hire UK and Diamond Photobooths all offer the classic photobooth for hire, or for something a little different, check out Photo Booth Hire UK and Wedding Venue Lighting who both offer the magic mirror experience or Photobooth4You who also have a taxi booth and vintage booth available.

SINGERS

A wedding singer is a great option; they can entertain with soulful slow music while your guests are eating, and can then kick it up a notch when it’s time to let their hair down. Most artists already have a style that they perform as, so communicate with your chosen singer as to what sort of music you would like and make sure they will do it justice before you book. Check out Not Just Another Wedding Singer Steve Michaels and also Val Hill Vocalist for all your crooning needs.

DJ’S

Your wedding DJ is the one who gets your guests to the dancefloor, announces the first dance and

makes sure the variety of music is balanced. Gone are the days of cheesy DJ’s who talk over every song; nowadays it’s all about less is more. Many DJ’s also have their own lights and other avenues of entertainment, so find out what they can offer before you book. Check out Not Just a Wedding Singer, Steve Michaels who is also available as your wedding DJ as well as singer.

LIVE BAND

A live band can go down really well and is a great draw for your guests to come to the dance floor. They create a lively atmosphere and you can even choose a favourite genre, whether its jazz, soul, rock or pop! There will be a live band that will cater to your preferred tastes. To avoid a quiet period when the band is on break, you could liaise with them ahead of the day, to allow different members to play instrumental while band members take turns on break; this way, the music will always be flowing for your guests to enjoy. Depending on the theme of your wedding, you may wish to add in extra entertainment to give those guests who don’t want to get up and boogie, something to enjoy. For a rustic outdoor wedding, fireworks are ideal; a magician can perform close up magic in an elegant marquee wedding and circus performers can wow your guests at a festival themed wedding. Whatever entertainment style you’re looking for, you will find a wedding entertainer who can work with you to create the perfect atmosphere for your guests, so they leave feeling entertained and impressed.

Top tips: ENTERTANMENT OPTIONS

Your options often depend completely on the type of wedding you’re going for. If it’s outdoor, you have may room for fireworks, whereas if it’s more of an elegant sit down type of do, a harpist or soul singer may be preferred. It all depends on the sort of atmosphere you want to create for your guests. A live band for instance, should encourage people to get up dancing and gives a more relaxed feel, and a photo booth adds a fun element to the mix and is great for all ages.

MEET UP

Neeting with your entertainment artist is a must. You have to get a good idea of how the entertainer will be on your wedding day. If they’re a magician, find out how they will work the floor. If it’s a photo booth, see if they have been to your venue before and find out where they usually set up.

LIAISE WITH YOUR VENUE

You want to make sure your chosen entertainment is permitted at your venue and the access and space they require is adequate. Fair enough if it’s a live band, but if you’re planning a fireworks show, some venues may have restrictions. Always check this before you book your entertainer.

FEEDING YOUR ENTERTAINER

Whether you need to supply a meal and refreshments depends on how long they are booked to entertain. Make sure they have something to drink and if they’re at your wedding for the long haul, feeding them is common courtesy. You may be paying them to entertain but they need to eat too!

Its all in the detail The finishing touches that make a wedding extra special WEDDING FAVOURS

This is one of the most fun parts about planning your wedding, because it’s the bit that you can personalise the most. Your favours are a little thank you to your guests for attending and celebrating your big day. Anything from heart shaped dragees and mints, to bottle openers and ornamental gifts. It really depends on the theme of your wedding as to what you can do, but explore your creativity and find something really unique. This is your chance to stand out and show your guests a bit of your personality, so go wild!

TABLE DECORATIONS

These can range from fun table names and warmly lit mason jars, to heart shaped confetti. Whatever

floats your boat in terms of décor, have fun with it. If it’s a sit down meal, for your place names, match them to your wedding theme in either a rustic or elegant style to politely tell your guests where to sit. Wedding favours can also be laid out on your tables ready for guests to enjoy as they arrive and are a great ice breaker if you have guests sat together who don’t know each other.

WELCOME SIGN

It can be simple like ‘step this way for the wedding’ or could even be a blown up version of your wedding invite. A welcome sign is a wonderful adage to your décor that helps direct your guests to ‘where the party’s at’. You could have signs pointing to different parts of your venue; one to the ceremony, one to the dining and one to the dancing!

www.ido-magazine.co.uk - 89

Its all in the detail.. SOMETHING FOR THE CHILDREN

If you’re having kids at your wedding, having something like an activities table or even a sweet cart is a great idea to keep the children entertained while the adults converse. Simple things like colouring books and cuddly toys are enough to keep a child entertained for just the right amount of time. And their parents will be thankful that you have thought of something extra to allow them to relax a little on your special day.

GUEST BOOK

Instead of the traditional guest book for your guests to write in, why not make it a feature piece of décor? Have a polaroid camera for your guests to take pictures of

themselves, then they can write their message on the back and pin it to a purpose built photo wall. Or go for wooden hearts for guests to write their messages of good wishes on and then pop them in a jar. Another popular idea is to create a fingerprint tree of all your guests’ thumbprints, with their names along the side; kids in particular will love this!

HANGING DECORATIONS

If it’s an outdoor or marquee style wedding, why not dress it up with hanging garlands or led light up jars hanging from trees? It’s so simple but will add a creative touch to your wedding and lights will look stunning when night falls, leaving you with a twinkling backdrop for your first dance.

DISPOSABLE CAMERAS

These are a fantastic idea and hark back to those old wedding memories with a point and shoot camera and blinding flash. Bringing nostalgia and fun to the wedding table, disposable cameras are cheap, cheerful and give your guests something to do while waiting for their food or the speeches. A great thing to remember is that by having a camera on each table, you will pretty much guarantee a photo of every single wedding guest at your wedding. Just make sure they know to look in the viewfinder to avoid chopping heads off and that the flash is turned on. There would be nothing worse than getting your cameras developed to find the majority of them look too dark to see, or a pile of bodies with no heads!

WEDDING PHOTOS APP’S

With the ever increasing influence of modern technology, many brides are taking to wedding apps to help with their wedding photos. There are a few apps out there that you can download free of charge; with a code unique to your wedding, just give this to your guests who can then download the app. Any photos that they take at your wedding can be uploaded straight into your wedding folder for you to enjoy. This is a great way of getting lots of candid photos that your photographer may not capture, and though they may not be print quality, they will definitely make for some amusing memories to look back on. A good free app to download is Wedpics, which is available on Itunes.

Tips for Amazing wedding photos Your wedding photos are an important piece to your wedding day puzzle. You will look back on them in years to come and they will serve as your clearest memories of the best day of your life. TAKE PHOTOS OF YOUR WEDDING MAKEUP IN DIFFERENT LIGHT In the lead up to the wedding and if possible with your photographer, have a few practice shots with your bridal makeup and see how they come out. Flash from a camera lights up the entire face and any unblended foundation will show up lighter than in reality, leaving you with an unenviable clown look. Also keep in mind if you’re wearing white or ivory for your wedding dress, that this can also wash out your features. Practice makes perfect! WRITE A SHOT LIST FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER This will guarantee you will get all the key photos of family members that are important to you. The photographer won’t know if Great Auntie Mary has travelled over from Australia specially for your big day, so they need to know if you want a photo with them. Write this together with your other half and get a second opinion from your parents. There aren’t many occasions where your entire family will all be together at once, so your parents might

98 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

want to ensure a few important photos of your older relatives with the newlyweds. Don’t forget to write names down so the photographer can call them out when arranging individuals for each shot. MEET WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHER A FEW TIMES BEFORE THE WEDDING This is a must, to help give them a good idea of how you want to come across in your photos if nothing else. If you’re a fan of more posed shots, they need to know. If you prefer more in the moment photos, they should be made aware. Everything you communicate with your photographer before the big day can only help your wedding photos, not hinder them. CHOOSE A BRIGHT NATURAL LIT LOCATION FOR YOUR OUTDOOR PHOTOS If permitting, outdoor wedding photos look stunning, and a photographer will tell you, there’s nothing better than shooting in natural light. Artificial light just doesn’t light you up in the same way. So whether it’s on the front

grounds at your wedding venue, or in a local national park, being outside definitely has its benefits when it comes to clear, crisp photos. APPOINT A HELPER TO LIAISE WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHER ON THE DAY This is a great idea because if the photographer has any issues, they don’t have to bother you. This could be the maid of honour or best man and could involve them helping to gather relevant guests together for shots, or ensuring no one walks off before they’ve been photographed. It benefits to have a helper for the photographer, so you can enjoy your wedding photos in peace.

PLAN FOR BAD WEATHER This goes without saying, but no bride wants wedding photos where her hair and makeup are all over the place. Particularly if you’re getting married in an inclement season, i.e March or September, where sunshine is less likely, plan for every eventuality. Pick out an indoor location if your outdoor one is soaking wet, or bring along a white sheet and some fun white umbrellas for any outdoor shots. Wedding photos with rain can look spectacular if done correctly, so use it to your advantage. With these tips in mind, you should be all set and ready to go for fantastic wedding photos!

Adam & Kim’s

wonderful wedding Blush pink meets silver sparkle for a touch of glamorous elegance Photography by Rob Freeman Photography www.robfreemanphotography.co.uk

WHEN: Saturday 20th May 2017 WHERE: Holiday Inn, Garforth Pontefract couple Adam and Kimberley Crossley celebrated their recent wedding with not one, but two, honeymoons. The couple, who married on May 20 this year at The Holiday Inn, Garforth near Leeds, enjoyed a week on their own on the Greek island of Crete followed by a weekend in the Lake District with their two children. Their trips away provided the perfect ending to a ‘wonderful wedding’ when everything went like clockwork to create an amazing day for both the happy couple and their guests. Despite the weather turning to rain when it was time for the photographs, nothing could dampen the spirits of the wedding party and their photographer captured some great memories of the day.

Adam, who works as a claims handler, and Kimberley, a quality assurance co-ordinator, met over three years ago. Now they are happily settled in their marital home in Pontefract with their two children. When Adam proposed in November 2015, the couple gave themselves 18 months to organise their wedding – although Kimberley found her perfect wedding dress straight away, spotting it during an early bridal shopping trip. “My dress was hung up in my grandma’s wardrobe for 17 months. I definitely chose it in good time,’’ Kimberley said. Her dress certainly took centre stage at the wedding ceremony which was witnessed by 70 guests and followed by a traditional threecourse wedding breakfast, all held

at The Holiday Inn. One of the most poignant moments of the service was when 12-year-old son Ethan did a reading. The bride’s ivory dress featured a sweetheart neckline, lace underlay across the shoulders, a train and was decorated with sequins and lace. Kimberley also wore a veil and carried a bouquet of pink hydrangeas and roses. She was attended by three bridesmaids who wore dark rose pink dresses and carried bouquets of white hydrangeas. Two flower girls wore pale blush pink dresses and carried white roses and fairy wands. The couple’s colour theme of pink and silver was continued at the reception where a fabulous four-tier wedding cake styled in ivory and silver and decorated with white hydrangeas and edible sequins was certainly a talking point. Kimberley said: “We found many of our suppliers via the I Do wedding shows although the cake was provided by my auntie and it was just beautiful.” “Although we had 18 months to plan, it flew by and there was always something to organise. I arranged and designed our table decor with some beautiful additions by Sasha (Fleur Chappelle) and we created a fun children’s table that went down a storm with little ones.” “Our guests particularly enjoyed the photo booth which was the first thing we booked for the wedding. Absolutely everyone loved and had a go, even the hotel staff!” In the evening the wedding party was joined by more guests for a disco and buffet supper. “The whole day was just wonderful and everything went to plan. All our guests had a great time and all said how much they had enjoyed themselves. The hotel staff were fabulous and couldn’t do enough for us. We would like to thank everyone involved in our special day.’’

Chris & Caroline’s

country retreat

Elegant, five-course fine dining meets rustic country charm Photography by Imajination Photography, www.imajinationphotography.com

WHEN: Saturday 30th September 2016 WHERE: Woodhall Hotel & Spa, Wetherby Chris and Caroline Gillis, tied the knot at the stunning Wood Hall Hotel and Spa in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. The Barnsley couple chose the venue after spending a weekend away at the beautiful countryside retreat which provided a picture perfect backdrop for the big day. The couple, who run their own nationwide security business, were married on September 30, 2016, just six months after they decided to tie the knot. Caroline, said: “We met through mutual friends and had actually known each other a long time before becoming a couple. We have a young daughter, Evie, who at almost two was our Flower Girl and a teenage daughter, Ellie, who was one of my bridesmaids.” “Using contacts through I Do’s wedding shows, we found organising the wedding in just six months quite easy, the hardest part was deciding on the food, wine and overall menu for the wedding reception. Together, we chose a five-course fine dining meal for our daytime guests and it was just perfect.” The magnificent country house provided the perfect setting for the

ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening reception. With 60 day guests and 85 for the evening celebrations, the day went like clockwork and the couple were full of praise for the venue’s staff and organisation. The wedding day began with a 12noon ceremony where Caroline wore an ivory gown with diamanté trim, a corset-style bodice and train. She carried a bouquet of mixed country flowers with roses and heather in shades of white and blue. Along with her two daughters, Caroline was attended by best friend Adele. Flower girl, Evie, wore an ivory dress with a blue sash, while the older bridesmaids wore floor-length black and white gowns and all carried similar flowers to the bride. Chris, his best man and fathers of the bride and groom, all wore matching grey three-piece suits with pale blue ties and hankies. The evening was brought to life by a live band ‘The International Party Doctors’, who got the dance floor filled and guests also enjoyed the ‘Capture Cab’ a white taxi photobooth. The overall theme, which featured the colours, black and pale blue throughout, had a quirky rustic country

‘From hessian hints and welly-boot centrepieces to a milk-churn post-box, sheep breed table names and their aptly named Candy Baa’ influence. From hessian hints and welly-boot centrepieces to a milk-churn post-box, sheep breed table names and their aptly named Candy Baa’ was a nod to Caroline’s childhood, growing up on a sheep farm. The theme continued through the reception with black sashes on white chairs, black and white favour boxes and name cards. For their wedding cake they threw tradition to the wind, opting for tiers of cheeses, stacked and decorated with hessian and fresh fruit. The couple enjoyed photographs amidst the

stunning grounds and gardens whilst guests were treated to canapés, Pimms and lemonade and enjoyed the sunny weather and rolling countryside views. Young guests at the wedding made full use of a play-bus which provided hours of entertainment. Caroline said: “The whole day passed in a flash and we had a super day. All our guests said they had a wonderful time. I particularly loved the evening party as our young daughter was shattered and asleep by 7pm which meant we could truly relax and enjoy our time with our guests.’’

alternative wedding Steampunk and rock music meet Indian cuisine for a wonderfully alternative wedding. WHEN: Saturday 10th June 2017 WHERE: Barnsley Town Centre Everything went like clockwork for newlyweds Lee and Natasha Fisher when they married at Barnsley Town Hall on 10 June 2017. Looking back on the day, the couple said it was perfect despite the bridegroom feeling a little under the weather on the morning of the wedding. Even a bit of early rain cleared up and the wedding party were able to gather together for some fabulous wedding photographs after the civil ceremony. Lee, who works as a Delivery Driver and Natasha, a Marketing Assistant, met over eight years ago through their love of alternative rock music. After setting up home in Carlton, they became engaged and then gave themselves nine months to plan their dream wedding day. For the wedding ceremony, Natasha wore an ivory lace gown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt from Barnsley’s Elegance Bridal Studio. Her seven bridesmaids

106 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

which included the bride’s three sisters, two step-daughters and two friends, all wore individual dresses in different designs and shades of teal. The bride’s mother, Beverley made all the bouquets which featured ivory flowers embellished with vintage elements including brooches, buttons and cogs to match in with their chosen steampunk theme (a style that combines historical elements with 19th Century technological features). She also made all the table decorations and centrepieces, while a friend of Natasha’s created the invitations, and on the day stationery. Everything was designed to tie in with the steampunk style, and featured the colours gold, copper and teal. The theme extended to the couple’s wedding cake, which was created by a family friend and was made up of three different flavoured tiers; chocolate sponge, a Victoria sponge and a red velvet sponge.

Natasha said: “We had a real DIY wedding with family and friends helping us with decorations, stationery and the cake, but it was lovely to see everything come together on the day and it all worked perfectly. It was a really big help to get everyone involved, even my dad used his old Mercedes for our wedding transport. “My favourite part of the day was when Lee saw me walking down the aisle and teared up. I never expected him to be emotional. After the ceremony, the wedding party enjoyed an Indian buffet meal at the nearby Chilli Bar & Restaurant in Barnsley town centre, followed by an evening party in the upstairs Chill Champagne Bar. Around 95 guests attended the service and enjoyed the Asian style wedding meal with more guests invited to the evening celebrations.

Indian food is the couple’s favourite and all the guests approved of their choice and really enjoyed the reception which was far removed from a traditional sit-down wedding meal. Their chosen table names created a real talking point too, being named after Natasha and Lee’s favourite rock bands, with some guests finding themselves seated at ‘Stone Sour’ and ‘Five Finger Death Punch’. The day after the wedding, Lee and Natasha travelled to Abersoch in Wales for a week-long honeymoon – but they were not alone – as they decided to turn it into a family affair with a party of 10 journeying to the popular Welsh coastal resort on the Llyn Peninsula where they all enjoyed seven days of really lovely warm weather. “A perfect end to a wonderful wedding”, said Natasha.

Adam & Sarah’s

perfect day Rustic charm meets Star Wars for a beautiful and emotional May the 4th Wedding Photography by Blue Lights Photography, www.bluelightsphotography.co.uk

WHEN: Thursday 4th May 2017 WHERE: Waterton Park Hotel, Wakefield When Adam and Sarah Smillie planned their wedding day earlier this year in May, there was one thing that Sarah was praying for – that her father would be well enough to walk her down the aisle. After finding the perfect wedding venue at Waterton Park Hotel on the outskirts of Wakefield, the couple decided on a Thursday wedding and because it was quieter midweek, were able to enjoy the full facilities of both the hall and the lake area. Sarah said: “My dear dad Ronald Wood had been suffering with pancreatic cancer for about a year and was receiving palliative care at the time of the wedding. All he and I wanted was for him to be able to walk me down the aisle and give me away. We made arrangements so he could be at the wedding service. It was very emotional but I was very proud of him.’’ Sadly Ronald passed away a couple of weeks later. Despite mixed emotions, the wedding day could not have gone

‘We even had a Stormtrooper appear in time for the photographs’ any better with great weather and even a Star Wars theme. Sarah said: “There was a twist to the wedding as May 4th is known as Star Wars day (May the 4th be with you). Adam is a real fan and we had Star Wars names on each table and little figures in the bridegroom’s buttonhole. We even had a Stormtrooper appear in time for the photographs.’’ Adam, a Yorkshire Ambulance Service call handler and Sarah, who works in community dental care service, had known each other 13 years before they decided to tie the knot. After an emotional wedding proposal aboard a horse and carriage in Central Park, New York, they set about making plans and

108 - www.ido-magazine.co.uk

after about a year of searching, decided to choose Waterton Park Hotel for their venue as it had a real countryside feel. The couple, who live in Whitwood, Castleford, originally met through work. For the wedding ceremony, Sarah wore an ivory lace dress, featuring a hint of blush pink, and had a pearl and floral corsage on her wrist. Her three bridesmaids wore pale green dresses and her flower girl wore an ivory gown. All carried bouquets of cream flowers mixed with greenery. A wedding theme of Hessian, lace and green decorated the venue for the wedding breakfast along with the added extra of large bubblegum balloons. Some 60 guests attended the day-time celebrations and enjoyed a traditional wedding meal before the party continued into the evening. “Everyone at the hotel was great and very supportive, particularly as it was a day of very mixed emotions. We managed to get some lovely photographs and we couldn’t have asked for more from the hotel. We did a lot of the wedding planning ourselves and although sometimes it was hard, because of what was happening with my dad, we managed to get everything done and the venue looked lovely,’’ said Sarah. “Despite a mishap with the wedding cake, the hotel staff quickly sorted it out and everything else went to plan. We finally managed to tie the knot after 13 years together.’’ Adam and Sarah are planning to enjoy a honeymoon in the not-too-distant future and are hoping to travel to Hawaii. honeymoon ideas Whether you want to laze on the beach or live the high-life, here’s some top ideas for your holiday of a lifetime...

MALDIVES North Male Atoll situated in the Indian Ocean, is a tropical paradise just waiting to be explored. The best way to experience North Male Atoll is by residing in one of the incredible ocean villas so you can wake up every morning to a gorgeous view. Book a boat trip and journey through the islands to explore the rest of the Maldives and be wined

and dined at Thila Restaurant, which offers decadent seafood such as lobster and seabass. Then relax in the Kakuni Bar and feel the sand between your toes while you enjoy the laid back atmosphere. They also host events here and have themed nights like glow parties and movie nights to keep you entertained.

TO THE BEACH ARUBA An idyllic destination for your honeymoon, Aruba will surely not disappoint. Take a trip to Arashi Beach if your after a romantic escape. The beach is quiet with lots of underwater sights to see; so snorkelling is definitely on the list. One of the better known landscapes is Palm Beach, which boasts high-rise hotels and lots of water sports to enjoy. It also has luxurious calm seas, so is perfect for sun worshippers and swimmers alike. Start your honeymoon off with a romantic sunset walk along the water’s edge and enjoy a candlelit dinner after a day lazing around

on the sands with your newlywed. If you’re up for exercise, why not hike Arikok National Park’s trail and discover abandoned gold mines, ancient ruins and fossils. Aruba is famed for its high quality restaurants; visit Gianni’s and order a spaghetti al formaggio parmigiano. They will bring out a huge 18 inch in diameter cheese bowl, add a little whiskey and light it on fire to melt the cheese inside. Then they add spaghetti to mix in with the cheese and then pass it out to you. Now that’s definitely dinner and a show!

THAILAND Phi Phi island is one of Thailand’s most famous beaches, thanks to its beautiful rock formations and gorgeous turquoise seas. Featuring snow white, delicately soft sand; a sun worshipper’s paradise. If you’re a fan of the Leonardo Dicaprio film ‘The Beach’, take a trip to the famous Maya Bay where it was filmed and soak up the atmosphere. If you prefer a quieter trip, Loh Dalum is a stunning

option. It has shallow seas that are warmed by the sun, so are wonderful to laze about in, and there are no waves, so the water is only ever waist deep! Dine out in Ciao Bella with an Italian twist or be more adventurous and chow down in one of the many Thai food stalls that line the path between the Tonsai and Loh Dalum beaches. Whatever your choice, you can be sure it will be authentic Thai!

MAURITIUS The world famous Flic En Flac beach is almost 6 kilometres long but is divided into 3 beaches to enjoy. The north beach is quiet with a small marina and one of the largest public beach sand areas on the entire island. The central beach has tonnes of surrounding nightlife with many bars and clubs in close proximity. There’s even a casino and a shopping centre nearby too. The south beach is idyllic, with shallow waters and white sands to catch some rays while you honeymoon in peace. Flic En Flac also has

a lagoon, which is protected by coral reef; perfect for snorkelling and discovering the sealife below. Sample some of the food on offer at one of the beach front stalls; you can get anything from hotdogs to Chinese food. If it’s high class eating you’re after, be sure to go to Domaine Anna, which is hidden within the sugar cane fields. An amazing atmosphere greets you and you can sit at a table on the water or for a more relaxed vibe on your honeymoon, try Chez Pepe, which is all about the pizza and pasta.

ESCAPE TO THE CITY If you’re after a city escape for your honeymoon, check out the city breaks below for a few out of the box destination ideas.

MIAMI South beach is renowned across the globe as being one of the top hot spots to visit. Named the American Riviera, you can find pretty much anything to do here. Whether its shopping in one of the many bespoke boutiques, or taking your tastebuds on a culinary journey with gourmet cuisine, South Beach has everything to offer. White sandy beaches entice you to sunbathe and the crystal clear waters are just begging you to take a dip to cool off. Then experience Miami’s Nightlife with its huge array

of nightclubs and hotel bars to enjoy. Relax in a cocktail lounge like Haven Kitchen & Lounge on Lincoln Road; and order a fantastical smoking nitrogen infused cocktail to both soothe and excite the senses. If you’re a gin lover, order a GiVen, which is gin, lemongrass, hibiscus and seltzer (or soda water to us Brits) and relax with sophistication. Or explore some of Miami’s rooftop bars where all the hip locals and some celebs go. Area 31 at Epic Hotel and LVL 25 at Conrad Miami are two to definitely not miss!

DUBAI Dubai is a honeymooner’s paradise. If you’re after fast paced luxury, this is the destination for you. Cosmopolitan by design and boasting many shopping centres, restaurants and other opulent venues, Dubai is high on the bucket list of places you need to go. Take your pick from one of the 5 or even 7 star hotels and be treated to the highest luxury while you honeymoon away. Enjoy the white sandy beaches and be sure to visit the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa; at over 828 metres high with over 160 stories, it’s not for the faint hearted but the view is a sight to behold. You will never be stuck for things to do while honeymooning in Dubai. Go on a desert safari across the sand dunes and finish the day with a barbecue buffet and a cool refreshing drink. Or take a trip to the Dubai Mall, naturally one of the largest in the world and shop till you drop while taking a break for lunch at one of the many eateries within.

PANAMA CITY

FLORENCE Italy is synonymous with love and romance, so choosing Florence for a honeymoon is sure to entice you. You will fall in love with this city from the moment you arrive. Bask in ‘la dolce vita’ (the good life) as it is truly still alive and well in this honeymooners destination. You can’t visit Florence without seeing some of the historical sites and architecture. Visit The Uffizi, the oldest museum in the Western world and featuring many famous paintings such as La Primavera by Botticelli or Doni Tondo By Michelangelo. Or if you visit the Galleria Dell’ Accademia, you can catch a

ONE FROM THE BUCKET LIST:

glimpse of Michelangelo’s David; arguably one of the most famous sculptures in the world. Take a trip to Vivanda if it’s wine sampling you’re after; with a wine list boasting over 120 labels. You can also enjoy some local antipasti while your perusing the aisles; all ingredients are sourced locally too. Why not take part in aperitivo (happy hour) between 7 and 9pm, take your fill of bruschetta and pizza, while you sample the variety of drinks on offer from £8- £10 and party in the piazza. Florence is full of possibilities and you can fall in love with this city as you celebrate your newlywed status.

This city has 27 miles of beautiful white sandy beaches along the coastline; enough to keep you going throughout your entire honeymoon. Fresh seafood is also popular here with many fishermen taking advantage of the abundant waters. Dine in style in one of the waterfront restaurants with the catch of the day, soak up the last of the sunshine and watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. There’s even a Ripley’s Believe It or Not to visit nearby if you’re up for seeing a few oddities on your honeymoon break. Visit Chan’s Wine World, where you’ll find pretty much any wine you desire along with local cheeses and other gourmet foods. A visit to the Cinta Costera is also a must, a gorgeous stretch of waterfront park where you can go cycling, play tennis, do yoga or even just while away the day on a bench and enjoy the view.

{ STAG & HEN }

stag & hen ideas We’re taking a look at some of the best home and away destinations for those all important stag and hen do’s, first up we’re looking at top staycation ideas, ideal for those who don’t want to break the bank or travel too far.

EDINBURGH Edinburgh is the perfect place to kick off your stag/hen party with a bang, a bar crawl paradise with many pubs, bars and clubs in Old Town. Take a trip to Electric Circus, a popular destination for stag/hen parties and get to ‘try before you buy’ on cocktails to make sure it’s the right one for you. Or visit Bow Bar, once named the ‘best drinker’s pub in Britain’, probably due to its

huge selection of ales, malts and whiskeys on offer. Last count had over 140 different malts; definitely on the list for a pub crawl. Aside from the drinking, check out a City of the Dead Tour and experience the more haunted side of Edinburgh or visit the Midlothian Snowsports Centre with the UK’s biggest artificial ski slope and take part in activities such as snowboarding even after sunset.

HOME DESTINATIONS LAKE DISTRICT Nothing screams weekend getaway more than this. Even better is if you stay in one of the sought after ‘Big House in the Lakes’ buildings; each one is wonderfully unique. Get all your mates to stay together in one house in Windermere and let the partying commence! The best part about being in the middle of nature? You can take part in pretty much any activity you like,

from abseiling to a zip wire. Get involved in a Kankku off-road driving experience and then relax on a lake cruise with the stunning windermere landscape. You can even hire a private mixologist to come to the house you’re staying in and mix up some special cocktails for you and your party; so you can spend more time socialising and enjoying your break away.

BATH

MANCHESTER Known for some of the best nightlife in the UK, Manchester is a definite partying spot for your stag/hen party. There is always something happening in the city, such as an international festival and its almost like the city oozes vibrance and excitement. Visit

the Curry Mile or China Town for authentic cuisine and take a trip to Cloud 23, a contemporary bar on the 23rd floor of the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. You will be afforded some of the greatest views of the city at night while you enjoy a glass of champagne in style.

You can’t visit Bath without experiencing a Thermae bath spa heated by natural hot springs to engage in full relaxation. Featuring gorgeous architecture and a fantastic shopping experience, Bath is cited as one of the most liveable cities in the world. It also has some

pretty fantastic nightlife too; with a mix of oldy worldy pubs right up to the newest trendy bars. Take a trip to Sub 13 and sample their award-winning cocktails or check out OPA and sample their Greek cuisine, and even learn to cook it yourself!

{ STAG & HEN }

stag & hen ideas Before I go any further, if you’re looking for a hen do to Blackpool or a lads stag party to Newcastle, look away now. Here’s our top picks of away destinations with a difference...

AWAY DESTINATIONS LISBON An up and coming party city, Lisbon mixes the old with the new when it comes to the ideal party destination. Be sure to visit LAB, Loco and Alma, three restaurants who were recently awarded a Michelin star for their fine dining experiences. Lisbon also has a

19th century vertical elevator to help navigate the hilly streets and changing incline of the city. The city is also budget friendly and offers great value as a party destination AND because it’s on the western edge of Europe, it is the continent’s sunniest capital city.

BUDAPEST Budapest is known as ‘the Paris of the East’ with its sophisticated atmosphere and Viennese architecture. It boasts many thermal spas which have over 100 natural hot springs serving them; perfect for a relaxing getaway. Take in The Great Market Hall, which is the biggest

food market in Budapest and at over three levels, you’re sure to find something to tantalise your tastebuds. Or party away in ‘Ruin pubs’, which are derelict areas like factory buildings or old cinemas, transformed into cheap pubs where you drink your favourite tipple in style.

NICE Nice is situated on the French Riviera, which just screams class and sophistication. The best time to visit is between May and September when its at its sunniest, so you can soak up the rays uninterrupted. More of a toned down relaxed party destination,

Nice is known for relaxation and shopping with some pretty fantastic water sports activities thrown in. However, if you’re looking for something more party central, Monaco and Cannes are just a short limo ride away for all your clubbing desires.

MARBELLA A top notch sunny location, Marbella is every hen and stag party’s dream destination. Many celebrities don their bikinis and swimwear here, so don’t be surprised if you brush shoulders with somebody famous. It’s not all glitz and glamour though; just a short walk away, you will find the

‘real’ Spain in Marbella Old Town with its narrow winding streets and beautiful cobbled walkways with quaint little bistros on each corner. Why not take a trip to Nikki Beach, one of the best daytime beach clubs in the world where you can party with the rich and famous under the Andalucian sunshine.

CROATIA Croatia is not the first place you think of when trying to find a hen/stag party destination. But if you visit Hvar, Croatia’s sunniest island, you won’t be disappointed. Filled with ancient palaces, stunning beaches and posh restaurants, along with

coastal clubs that are THE place to be,you can find everything you need in this beautiful bay town. Be sure to visit Carpe Diem, a nightclub open non stop, that also has a beach spa to enjoy and taste out-of-this-world cocktails as you party all night and day long.
