Rope horses have long been the workhorses of the Western industry—making seamless transitions from daywork to arena work, day in and day out, across the country.
From small ranchettes nestled in Arizona’s canyons to Big Sky Country’s vast expanses, rope horses have kept the sport of team roping alive while doing the legwork to keep the cattle industry and the Western way of life afloat, too, with little fanfare.
Once overlooked, with shaggy coats, big feet and wind-knotted manes, the rope horse has come of age alongside the team roping industry. Gone are the days of ‘good enough’ in today’s competitive team roping game.
Rope horses in 2023 need to be the cream of the crop: still able to handle long days in the saddle punching cows, but with the refinement and skill of the finest show horses in any event. Good bone, a keen eye, a strong topline, sloping shoulders and a deep croup set the standard for the modern-day rope horse, and it takes great breeders and dedicated horsemen and horsewomen to develop those qualities.
At Rancho Rio, we honor the timeless tradition of the rope horse, highlighting the best the industry has to offer for ropers of every skill level. We take great pride in being the premier location for ropers to showcase their elite horses, connecting the rope horse with the roper the way today’s booming sport deserves.
We are so glad you are here. Every year we look for new ideas that will be fun and make each sale better than the last. For the first time we have moved the sale to Saturday night. It will serve as the Grand Finale to the National Team Roping Finals presented by Cinch, which kicks-off Saturday, March 4. You’ll find the full roping schedule starting on page 74. Friday night we will host The Horse Sale reception under the big top. There will be appetizers and live music. Additionally, many consignors use this opportunity to acclimate their horses to the ring. A laid-back atmosphere sets the stage for good conversation and a little relaxation before sale day.
If you’re reading this, it’s a safe bet that you own a cowboy hat. I have quite a few—I have my everyday straw, I have my black felt, I have my going-to-town cowboy hat—and every time I put one on, I stand a little taller and feel a little better than I would without it. The cowboy hat symbolizes honesty and integrity and the ability to put in a hard days’ work. The cowboy hat embodies self-reliance and the propensity to get bucked off and get right back on. Largely, it symbolizes the American West.
I love wearing one, but I know when I do there is a higher standard that is expected. The American West takes responsibility, offers forgiveness and understands grace. I hope that we can extend these core values not just in our industry but across the globe. The world needs more cowboy hats.
I’m sure there is a horse for everyone, but not every horse is for everyone. We have composed a nice selection of horses for sale in this catalog. Consignors and industry professionals have taken tremendous amounts of time writing descriptions, procuring photos and editing videos, but nothing is better than boots on the ground if you will. The name of each consignor is listed along with their phone number. It is very important as you are considering these horses that you call and talk with the owner, or agent, and take the time to go and try them whenever possible. Many of them are in Arizona leading up to the sale. We’ve seen many consignors competing on these horses at Rancho Rio and other local arenas. Take advantage of the opportunity to connect face-to-face.
Remember these are living, breathing animals that have various abilities, a broad range of dispositions, and they have all been through different training programs. However, despite the differences there is one thing that remains constant. R.F. Delderfied summed it up best when he wrote, “The best thing for the inside of a man, is the outside of a horse.” My sincere hope is that you find a horse here that you will enjoy.

If a dispute should arise between or among two or more bidders, the Auctioneer shall settle the dispute, and his decision shall be absolute, final and binding on all parties. Horses are at the buyer’s expense, risk, and responsibility from the instant the hammer is knocked down by the auctioneer to that buyer.
The seller is responsible for any and all guarantees. Except as otherwise announced by the auctioneer, the consignor warrants the following: 1) Title of the horse is free and clear; 2) The animal is sound of eyes, wind and limb; 3) The animal is not a cribber, windsucker, stall weaver or parrot mouthed; 4) The animal has not been nerved or have navicular disease or is foundered; 5) The sex or condition as a gelding or ridgeling is as described in the sale catalog or announced at time of sale. If any of these conditions are announced, the consignor is held harmless for the condition. Except for the forgoing limited warranties, each animal sold by the consignor without warranty and with all faults. Every horse is sold under this rule: therefore, no horses can be rejected by the buyer when struck off by the auctioneer. Prospective buyers are encouraged to examine horses thoroughly before purchasing.
In the event a dispute should arise as to a particular defect which should have been, but was not announced, the buyer has the right to have a veterinarian examine the horse he had purchased to determine if the horse suffers from the defect. This examination is to be made and The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio is to be notified within 72 hours from the end of the sale in which the horse was sold. If the purchaser’s veterinarian determined the horse to have the alleged defect, the sales management as agent shall appoint a veterinarian of its choice to determine if the horse has the defect and if the defect was present at the time of sale. His or her decision will be final. If the veterinarian determines that the defect was present at the time of the sale and it was not announced, the sale of said horse shall be null and void and the consignor must pay entry fee and commission as contained in the consignors contract, and the cost of the veterinary examination and veterinary work performed on the horse as a result of the said defect. If the appointed veterinarian determines the defect was not present at sale time, the sale of the said horse is valid and enforceable and purchaser assumes all cost and examination and treatment.

Upon receiving payment for a horse, the cashiers will issue an order to obtain delivery. Buyers are cautioned not to lose these orders. Buyers must make arrangement for the care of stock until it can be removed.
If the buyer rightfully rejects the animal in the manner stated above and within the time provided. The animal will be returned by the buyer to the consignor will refund to the buyer the full purchase price of the animal.
Title to and risk of loss passes to the buyer when the hammer drops. Immediately after the horse is sold, it will be the sole risk and responsibility of the buyer.
All horses in this sale are to have a current negative Coggins.
Buyers and spectators are cautioned to be careful while on the grounds and particularly while horses are being shown or sold in the sale ring. Neither the owners nor any other person connected with this sale assume any liability legal or otherwise for accident to persons or property, before, during or after the sale. Notice The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio acts as a selling agency only. Every horse in the sale catalog must pass though the sale ring and all monies pass through the office. All horses must be removed from grounds by Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. on March 12, 2023.
Insurance is highly recommended for your new horse. Shadle Insurance, Jon and Elizabeth Shadle, will be on-site and available via phone to get your policy in place immediately. Insurance is required for horses staying on-site more than 24 hours after the sale and for any horse we help arrange transportation on. Insurance will be 3.35% of purchase price.

2022: SPORTIN ROSCOE - $200,000
Sportin Roscoe, was the high-seller when the gavel dropped at $200,000. The 2013 chestnut gelding “South Point” was consigned by New Mexico’s Brooke and Rodey Wilson of Wilson Cattle Company and purchased by Shane O’Hotto, Fort Lupton, Colorado. The ranch-raised gelding sired by Sportin High Brow was bred by Jim Rounsaville, Olney, Texas.
2021: SMARTYS DUNNY - $250,000
Smartys Dunny set a new sale record when he sold for $250,000 to Bryan Beaver, Bucyrus, Kansas. A 2014 red dun gelding “Captain” was sired by Colonels Smart Spook by Smart Spook out of a granddaughter of Hollywood Dun It. The all-around performance horse was consigned to the sale by 26-time PRCA World Champion Cowboy Trevor Brazile, Decatur, Texas, along with sale agent Miles Baker, Stillwater, Oklahoma.
2020: PALO DURO PLAYBOY - $150,000
Palo Duro Playboy was the high-seller at a record setting $150,000. "Gunslinger" was sired by Palo Duro Cat by High Brow Cat out of the Freckles Playboy mare Tasmanian Playgirl. The 2012 buckskin gelding was consigned to the sale by Mozaun McKibben, Whitesboro, Texas, and purchased by Steve Gilbert, Toquerville, Utah.
2019: LETS ROO IT - $85,000
Lets Roo It topped the sale at $85,000. A full-brother to the 2018 high-seller, Im Brad To The Bone, the sorrel AQHA gelding "Tank" is a 2013 model sired by Roo Star out of Probably Not A Shiner. A finished head horse, he was consigned to the sale by Melissa Miller, Belton, Texas, ridden by La Cygne, Kansas, horseman Brad Lund and purchased by Laurie Mills, Mills Livestock Company, Casper, Wyoming.

Shiloh is as comfortable to ride as a Cadillac is to drive—feels great underneath you. Travels so smoothly and collected with his hocks always under him. Whether we're hauling him to ropings, horse shows, or the parade, he is an absolute crowd favorite amongst our team! Shiloh is a genuine all-around gelding who excels in the ranch versatility, trails, and cow horse and is also a top switch-end rope horse. You'll really enjoy strolling through the crowd and the trails on Shiloh. He goes where you point him, and he will let you pack your lunch and eat it horseback. He has been a real ranch horse branded, doctored cattle, and gathered giant mountain pastures. Also, has been used to work buffalo. He is one you always feel safe on when you're in those tight spots. He is trained to lie down and curbside to mount. In the roping events, you couldn't ask for a better build, he can steal starts, and he will hold up to the test of time. Shiloh is very user-friendly, scores, runs, and rates cattle exceptionally well, and has a neat move in the corner and across the pen with a very snappy face. Heeling is an absolute breeze; he always seems to be in the right place and has impeccable timing. He is straightforward when you rein him and responds off leg pressure. A smooth loper, switches leads easily, has a pretty turnaround, and can stop. He is loaded with cow and watches one in front of him, down the fence, and in the roping arena. He is friendly and fun to be around. Shiloh hauls with other horses and pastures with them as well. We think a lot of Shiloh, and we would like to keep him. Very broke and gentle—easy to get along with, no bad habits. Has never offered to buck—a real gentleman. He is a reining horse— great handle, knows lead changes and has a BIG stop. His good disposition makes him a fun trail horse. He crosses water, safe on the trail and sure-footed in tough terrain. Stays sound and stays broke. Lay him off for a while, no problem.
