Prominent course provides golfers a fine challenge By Mike and Tom Barry Cherry Hills Village was the epicenter of the golf world last week, as the venerable Cherry Hills Country Club hosted another distinguished spectacle. The prestigious BMW automaker brought its esteemed Professional Golf Association championship to Colorado, attracting more than
30,000 people on Sept. 7 alone. At the end of a spectacular late-summer’s day with the Rocky Mountains in the background, Billy Horschel carried a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round, parring the last 11 holes to capture the championship by two strokes. He shot an opening-round of 68 – when 67 led – added a 66 in the second round. He then went low with a 63 on Saturday to take a 3-stroke, 54-hole lead and
then fought off a few challenges with a 1-under-par 69 on Sunday. This was Horschel’s first FedEx playoff event since joining the professional ranks in 2009. The clean-cut golfer was a four-time All-American in college. Ryan Palmer found himself tied with Horschel after the 11th hole. He shot a bogey on the 12th followed by a double bogey on the 13th to play himself out of contention. Horschel, 27, was at the top
of his game Sept. 7, making wise decisions as he navigated the arduous links on the back nine, shooting 14 under par for the entire tournament. The BMW Championship victory now places Horschel in second place for the FedExCup ratings with 2,250 total points. “The course is good. Hopefully, we can come back in the future,” said Horschel, as fans cheered loudly during trophy presentations. “Hopefully, this is
a regular tour out here in Denver because a lot of fans came out this weekend and supported us. So hopefully, we can get another PGA Tour event back here, because it’s a great place. … Yeah, it means a lot to win, especially an event in the FedExCup playoffs, because it’s amplified 10 times, really. You understand what a victory here does going down the road, especially to Atlanta. You get that much closer to winning Continued on pages 16-17
The rubber hits Arapahoe Road City awaits improvements in east Centennial
By Peter Jones It has been a long road to improvements on Arapahoe Road between Waco Street and Himalaya Way in east Centennial – a longer road than the hard-fought road to 13-year-old Centennial’s incorporation. Just ask Mayor Cathy Noon, who attended last week’s open house on the project at nearby Grandview High School. “I was in this same room in 1999 and 2000 at county meetings about this roadway project,” Noon said of the days when Arapahoe County was
leading ill-fated efforts to widen the two-lane road into a six-lane thoroughfare. Centennial homeowner Gary Abrahamson is among the many who have been waiting 15 years or more for some government entity – any government entity – to take charge of the project to improve safety and reduce congestion in the area. “It’s about time it’s getting done. It’s long overdue,” Abrahamson said at the Sept. 4 open house. “In the wintertime, if one car is impacted, everybody’s impacted. Traffic is bad in the wintertime. It’s bad every day.” At long last, the one-year $15 million project is slated to Continued on page 2
