The Wonders of Washington
By Jake Hall ‘20 This past May, I was one of six students selected to complete a week-long internship with a Member of Congress from the RI Delegation in Washington DC. I chose to intern in Congressman Jim Langevin’s Office as I had previously interned for him in his RI District Office in the past. It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to do the internship for a week. I worked a normal workday in the US Capitol from 9AM to 5PM Monday to Thursday, with Friday off to be able to explore the city.
My other responsibilities in the office included answering phones, drafting correspondence, researching bills/legislation, and assisting office staff with various other tasks. While I was not working, I explored the various landmarks and sites Washington had to offer with my father. I also received an in depthtour of the US Capitol from another intern and I was able to see the many historical, significant sites throughout the building.
Intern responsibilities in the Capitol would often vary day to day. Most of my time was spent in meetings and informational sessions about key issues facing the American public. I attended briefings throughout the various House and Senate office buildings located on the sides of the Capitol on the economy, trade, cybersecurity, foster-care, and healthcare. My job was to take notes and report back to Congressman Langevin’s staff about what I took away from the meeting, and how it could help the Congressman make important decisions on legislation.
It was an amazing experience — I encourage all students in the Rhode Island College political science department to apply for the Washington trip for this coming spring. Lastly, if you ever find yourself in the city, here are some attractions (other than the main ones like the White House, Capitol, Monuments, etc.) I recommend you should pay a visit to: The World War II Memorial, Chinatown, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum of American History, National Archives, Air & Space Museum, the Wharf, and Nationals Park. 1
