7 Tricks Not to

Have That Lame Valentine’s Day by Rana Ramez

When it comes to the day of love, people often get divided into two hostile opposite camps: the mushy slushy love-dovey squad and the distinguished repulsive propulsive camp. In order to peacefully coexist on the 14th of February without any human losses, here’s a list of 7 things to avoid doing: 1. Stop the Fun-killing Whether in a relationship or single, many people start nagging about how they hate Valentine’s Day, and never fail to show it on every possible social media network. Here’s a tip: why don’t you deal with the day like any other day of the year and stop mocking people who celebrate it. Stop being bitter fun-killers. 2. Stop the V-day Obsession Seizing the day to brag on social media about having the best relationship and finding your life partner is just silly. It probably only means that you’re unhappy and trying hard to convince yourself before others with quite the opposite. It’s more necessary to show your love and appreciation to your SO in real life and not only in the virtual world. 3. Stop the Grumpiness You’re single on the day of love, guess what? It is just like any other Wednesday you are single on. No need to bring out the self-pity attitude and complain about how you’ll never find love. And also remember, being single is much better than being in a bad relationship, so don’t even think about calling back your ex. You broke-up for a reason. 4. Quit the Extravagance Manifestation When you ditch the cute sweet chocolates and flowers for exaggerated gifts, your date will definitely feel extremely uneasy and uncomfortable. Keep it simple. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone; it’s only Valentine’s Day. Save that rich kid attitude for birthdays and anniversaries!

12 IDENTITY

5. Stop the Visual Pollution It’s not that I’m against enjoying the day or anything, but seriously guys! It’s too red, it hurts our eyes. And unless you’re 13 years old, you can still celebrate the day without red clothes, red teddy bears and red hearts. Get over it and act normal already. 6. Never Propose If you’re planning to propose to your girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, please ABORT MISSION! It’s a day where every single couple in every single country celebrate their love. This is not romantic. It’s absurd, banal and Cliché. Wouldn’t you really prefer to be more creative and have your own special unique day that only both of you celebrate?! 7. Or Worse Break-up Seriously there is nothing to talk about here! Whatever reasons you may have, it is just despicably mean to choose that day to break up with someone. Do it on the 15th, an extra day won’t kill you anyway.

And finally, we all need to be reminded that love is about so much more than Valentine’s Day. True love is never affected by the calendar; it doesn’t increase or decrease based on the day. Celebrators need to stop giving it more importance than the rest of the year, while non-celebrators have to stop ruining the day for others.

Delicious temptation will lure lovers this Valentine’s with the promise of a night of starry-eyed affection. If the exotic appeals, Torii teases with a Japanese twist to a dream evening with lobster and tenderloin. In the beguiling Saraya Gallery and captivating Ristorante Tuscany, candlelit tables and roses set the scene for romance and exquisite cuisine ... the perfect match. Delight in the amuse-bouche, seafood platter with caviar dressing, consommé, fish or steak. But save room for our signature pistachio chocolate dacquoise ... because on Valentine’s night everyone should share love, devotion and wonderful food.

Yes, being single is a chance to better ourselves to become and choose better partners in life. You Learn to Take Charge of Your Happiness

Single Awareness Day: Why Being Single Makes You a Better Partner by Mariem Eltagoury

February is widely known as the month of love due to the very popular celebration of Valentine’s Day that takes place on February the 14th, but you might have not heard about its less popular cousin February the 15th which marks Single Awareness Day. Yes, in some places around the world they have a day to celebrate single people, as they do couples. You might be speculating as to why we should celebrate being single while couples post their happy photos on social media. Here’s why; because being single teaches you relationship lessons, no relationship can. You might be skeptical but when we are in a relationship we are in the continuous process of giving, and we are so accustomed to the idea of company it becomes so difficult to take a step back, see the bigger picture, and take in the lessons we need to learn. If you did learn anything from a previous relationship, you’ve probably done it after letting go, looking back, and realizing what you ought to have seen and done previously. 14 IDENTITY

People in relationships often assume or expect their partner to meet their needs or take the initiative to introduce happiness into their lives. In fact, many relationships suffer from problems and stress due to misplaced expectations. People who are single have more time to realize what makes them happy, and take action to achieve that happiness. They learn not to wait for others to hand them a smile. In a relationship where both partners are more self-aware of what makes them happy, it’s far easier for them to take the initiative to add spark to the relationship, they’ve done it before. You Have Richer Friendships After getting together, couples tend to withdraw away from friendships, especially women in our society. Turns out there’s actually a psychological term for it—dyadic withdrawal, says Gwendolyn Seidman, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Alright College in Pennsylvania. When one gets into a relationship very early in life, it’s easy to assume that “the one” is enough. However, those who hold out longer learn that having a group of people they care about and who care about them can be profoundly important, providing potential layers of support. Hence, in relationships those who’ve been single for long are more understanding and less controlling when it comes to friendships, and are more likely to get along well with your partner’s friends and family. You’re More Resilient The single one has made it through all the awkward situations and humiliations due to their single status. They’ve not confined to society norms or settled for less than what they deserve. They have what it takes to stand through the storm all alone. Come what may they are a strong person, hence a strong partner, anyone would be lucky to have them by their side when the rough gets going.

So enjoy being single and reaping the benefits; it’s all part of the plan of becoming your best self.

2. Self-express Skills In general, women tend to be more expressive than men, especially when it comes to feelings. Women are better than men at openly expressing love in romantic relationships. This explains Eve’s crave to deeper interpersonal relationships than men. They are more interested in people, feelings and relationships, while men are more caught up in practicalities and logic. It takes men longer to be able to express themselves verbally and emotionally; they will wait until they feel very secure in the relationship. 3. Actions Versus Words Based on the previous point, men have a tendency to show their love through affectionate meaningful actions and initiating fun activities instead of using words. It doesn’t mean that guys are incapable of feeling love, but for a lot of guys, love is a big scary word that they often have a hard time saying out loud. Actions always speak louder than words. So ladies, pay less attention to what he is or isn’t saying and start focusing on what he is actually doing for you.

Perceptions of Love: MEN vs WOMEN by Rana Ramez

Men and women belong to two different planets, and that’s a doubtless fact. Love aspect is one of the fields where those diversities are highly manifested. And since Valentine’s Day is ahead of us, we decided to take advantage of the occasion and provide our readers with a better understanding of their “Alien Significant Other”. Here’s a list of 5 main disparities between men and women about the way in which they perceive love. 1. Emotional Needs Each one of the two species tends to give what they want to receive, and not what the other one actually needs. Men like to feel appreciated, needed and trusted by their partners; they also require time off. Women, on the other hand, need to be understood, share feelings with their men and talk their problems out, feel cared for, supported emotionally and respected.

4. The Brain Evolution Men have the mental ability to detach themselves and suspend their empathy as a mechanism to distress and face everyday challenges, whereas women’s brains have developed much more relational roles. This explains the fact that women need to connect more, seek support and talktherapy to find solutions to their problems, while men on the other side would rather zone out and avoid sharing their problems. The key is to comprehend how your partner’s brain reacts to tension and cope with it. 5. Emotional Cycle Like a stretched rubber band, men experience emotional cycles. The approaching, distancing themselves then approaching again defines men’s cycle of emotional closeness; their desire and attraction back to their partners are fuelled by emotional isolation. Unlikely, women seek sensing security about their relationship and their partners’ feelings; they need to be constantly reminded of their lovers’ passion. So as simple and hard as it sounds, don’t chase or criticize your men and they will snap back. And gentlemen, know how to reassure your women.

In the end, remember not only to share your thoughts with your significant other, but also to listen to them and learn to find a middle ground that satisfies both of you. Compromise is the portal, and communication is the pillar to happy healthy relationships. IDENTITY 15

BEAUTY

V-DAY’s BEAUTY TRENDS by Mariem Eltagoury

To really help you shake up your look for Valentine’s Day, we scoured the scene for the latest V-day beauty trends. Whether you’re going out, staying in or spending the holiday with your girls, you don’t have to take hours to achieve the perfect look or opt for simplicity just to save time. If you’re looking to try something new this Valentine’s Day, don’t settle for basic waves. It’s 2018, which means anything goes. Any night out should be an excuse to try a new beauty look, whether simple like dot eyeliner or a more daring (and permanent) look like blorange hair. Date night is no longer restricted to classic beauty motifs like red lips or a voluminous blowout. Get your look from office-appropriate to date-ready in less time than it takes to say, “Valentine’s Day is just an excuse to buy candy.”

The Side Swept Bun Yes. It’s exactly what we’d do with our own hair if we were a modern-day princess. Michelle Williams’ side swept bun at the 2006 Oscars was a Hollywood moment that started a whole new category of romantic hairstyles.

Half-Up Style Go for this hopelessly romantic look with a matte red lipstick and a silky ribbon. This is a hairstyle that can be worn anytime, for any occasion, when you want to look like you’ve done the extra effort, but have not been quite up for it.

16 IDENTITY

A Fresh Cut Feeling rebellious? Try a new cut this month; it’s the month to celebrate love and no one deserves it more than you. This style is pretty as it is effortless. For an undone but pretty look, try Jennifer Lawrence’s beachy waves. Who said they’re only for summer?!

The Embellished Headband The easiest way to take your ponytail from day to night. Embellished headbands work great to polish off a pulledback style in no time, while showing off your best features. We predict this will be one of 2018’s popular beauty trends.

The Floral Braid Crown Re-create Vanessa Hudgens’ elaborate style by adding delicate flowers or floral accessory pins to a braid crown. Vanessa’s floral braid crown left us speechless, and we can’t wait to give this charming modern flower-child style a try.

The Unexpected Accessory Twist a few strands of metal chain onto a bobby pin, then secure and hide the pin in your hair. Cara Delevingne’s waves here are one of the most romantic hairstyles, but the addition of a gold accessory modernizes the look.

IDENTITY 17

Lip Stain We all know lipstick performs a disappearing act the minute you talk, drink, or eat. It’s easy to forget to touch up on your lip colour when you’re having a good time; and no one wants to be the lady with awkward colour residue around the perimeter of her mouth. This year try a low maintenance way to add colour by using a lip stain. Our favourites include Benefit Benetint and Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain.

Mauve Nails It’s easy to go for the regular pink or red shades for Valentine’s Day, but this year our choice is a less expected shade of mauve. If you haven’t tried Essie Nail Polish in Angora Cardi, now might be the time to try this favourite of ours! It’s easy to DIY at home, or with your girls.

Mix It Up Pulling up the very simple and natural look is the new sexy. Playing with simple colors and nudes that would complement your skin color. A touch of a color can’t hurt anyone or any skin color either. Voila!

Gold Lips For the ladies who are looking to get more adventurous with their makeup this Valentine’s Day, switching up your lipstick can totally change your overall look. Add a gold lip gloss over a nude lip colour - like our current favourite Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lip Colour in #1 Nude – or on top of a pale pink hue for a rosy-gold effect.

18 IDENTITY

Holographic Nails Really want to go bold with your nails? Ultra-glam chrome nails are having their moment with up to 570% in popularity on Pinterest. Try this hue of rose-gold for your Valentine’s Day. If you don’t know a salon that harbours this trend, try out Essie’s metallic collection.

Crimson Eyes Red eyeshadow has been popular for a while now, and the look is still going strong. To get the look, just apply matte red shadow across the lids. For a lustrous finish, dust a shimmery white or silver shadow on top.

Purple Liner

Shimmer and Smoke Take note from Jasmine Tookes here, and use reflective silver glitter instead of highlighter in the inner corner of your eyes to upgrade your eye makeup by adding shimmery accents to your smokey look.

Matte, Matte, Matte! We’re loving the all-matte look and seeing this trend on the red carpet using colours like blush, rosy neutrals, and burgundy. It would be wise, this year, to invest in a palette or two with versatile, matte, rosy-hued shades. Our personal favourite is Urban Decay’s Naked 3 palette.

The perfect grownup example of how to incorporate colour into your look. To get Kerry Washington’s look at the Golden Globes, incorporate purple eyeliner with a swipe of sheer, shimmery gloss, and you’re good to go.

Nail Art More and more people are skipping the traditional solid coloured nails and going for easy nail art. For date night, try getting artistic with your nail polish. If your date mentions it in conversation, it’s a sign he’s a keeper! Or if you’re having a ladies’ night in, you and your gal pals could experiment with Pinterest inspired designs.

INTERVIEW

Yasmin Raeis

When Passion Leads the Way to Success Interview by Amina Moustapha

IDENTITY 29

30 IDENTITY

The award winning remarkable actress, Yasmin Raeis took her first step into the acting world through television where she played the role of one of the leading five characters in A’ard Khas, laying the foundation for a successful and exceptional career. She participated in several films including; Ahmed Helmy’s X-Large, Wahed Saheh, Al Maslaha and the blockbuster TV Series Taraf Talet, which won Raeis her role in Mohamed Khan’s Fatat El Masna’a, marking her breakthrough in cinema. Subsequently, Raeis got the leading role in a string of successful films such as Made in Egypt alongside Ahmed Helmy and Mn Dahr Ragel alongside Asser Yassin. Yasmin Raeis has stolen the hearts of the Egyptian audience in just a few years, so we had to speak to her and try to figure out the secrets behind her incredible talent. What inspired your creative passion toward acting? What do you look for while choosing your roles? I’ve always loved to perform. I can’t remember the first time I have noticed that about me; it’s like it is in my nature. Acting is not a hobby for me; my passion for it extends way beyond that. And when passion is applied to purpose, it is a powerful driver. When I’m considering a role, I have this golden rule that I never break. I would never pick a character at random; I have to fall in love with it in order to play it. The role has to attract me, to tease me and to challenge me. “Fatat El Masna’a” was a turning point in your career. Tell us more about this outstanding experience, and working with the one and only Mohamed Khan. Working with the astounding Khan was such a phenomenal experience; full of lessons, full of growth, and also full of self discovery. While directing this movie, Khan guided me to dig deeper into myself, and while doing so I uncovered things I didn’t even know about myself. He is a brilliant director who would literally show you the way to bring out the best in you. When I asked why he picked me for the role, he answered that he saw through me. He said he knew I was the one for the

role, and that I had so much potential. It was a very big challenge for me; I had to work so hard to prove that I was up to his expectation. I gave the role my all. In addition, some scenes were so dramatic and packed with emotions, so I had to lay bare all my feelings in order to truly reflect those scenes. It was an astonishing adventure. For decades, readers repeated the same affirmation when the cinema production adapted a popular novel for the screen: “The book is better than the movie”. That’s not the case anymore, and Hepta was the proof. Why did the movie become a major success in your opinion? The credit behind this success must go first to the book; it was an extraordinary page-turner that captivated the readers. Mohamed Saddek’s writing would make you view relationships from a whole different perspective. The director of the movie, my husband, Hady El Bagoury fell in love with this tale, and had his mind set on turning it into a movie. He put together an exceptional ensemble cast, and worked hard with each and every one of us to bring the story to life on the big screen. We all worked so hard to deliver the meanings that the story carried, and to translate the feelings of the writer into acting. The cooperation between everyone in the cast, and our eagerness to make an amazing movie was the key behind this movie’s success. You were a guest of honour in “El Sheikh Jackson”; it was a surprise to see you singing ‘Helmy El Mohal’ and playing the guitar. That must have been a big challenge, how did you do it? Yes, it was a challenging experience, but I love challenges. When Amr Salama, the director of the movie offered me this role, he suggested that we do montage on my voice, but I insisted on having vocal trainings and piano lessons. I didn’t know if my voice would sound good or not, but I trained so much nevertheless. Even though the scene wasn’t a master scene, even though it was for just a few seconds, I had to put my all into it. I can’t speak for the audience so I don’t know if they liked it or not, but I believe that singing is about more than just a good voice. It is a projection of feelings. That was what I was trying to do in that scene; I hope these emotions reached them.

“Looking for Om Kulthum” is your newest movie; it premiered at Venice Film Festival. Tell us more about the movie and how you got the role. The Iranian filmmaker and artist Shirin Neshat is the director and screen writer of “Looking for Om Kulthum”. She was on the lookout for an Arab face to play the role, and she specifically wanted the actress to be Egyptian, because after all the film portrayed the life and legacy of this legendary Egyptian singer, Om Kulthum. When they offered me the role, I was shocked at first because I am well aware that there is no resemblance between me and this phenomenal singer. I wondered what Neshat saw in me that made her pick me for this role. But when I discussed it with her, she told me that the movie is not an attempt to do a linear biopic but instead it was about confronting Kulthum’s meaning and magnitude through the lens of another artist (the protagonist), who was trying to tell her story, and the battle against the constraints imposed on female artists. What is your next project? I am done shooting my newest TV series “Ana Shahira w Ana El Kha’en” based on a novel written by Nour Abd El Meguid. Starring Ahmed Fahmy in the leading role with me, and directed by Ahmed Medhat. It will air this month. There is also an international movie, but I am still in the reading process, so let’s hope for the best. Our issue this month revolves around how to have a happy and healthy relationship with your significant other; in your opinion what are the keys for a happy relationship? Simply the keys are communication, trust, mutual giving and taking, and to always listen to your partner.

A REBOUND OR REAL LOVE by Marwa Rakha

Dear Marwa, I was in a relationship with a girl for eight years but she was of a different religion, and that caused us many troubles. I loved her so much but I knew this interfaith relationship was doomed, because my parents would never give me their blessing to marry her. Before leaving her, I met another girl. I don’t know if it was me searching for an escape, a way out of the other relationship, or if I really liked that new girl. But I broke up with the first girl, and in a few weeks I started dating the other one. We have been together for over a year now. We got engaged and soon to be married. The problem is I can’t seem to be able to hush down the voices inside my head that are doubting this decision; am I really in love with her? It all happened very quickly. I always wonder if maybe I needed more time before getting into another relationship. Is it possible that I am really lucky to find love again that quickly and that easily? Dear Questioning Man, Many people would be quick to label your current relationship as a rebound but let me offer you a different perspective. Does a relationship actually end when the guy tells the girl that it is over, or when she tells him that she is leaving? The answer is no.

38 IDENTITY

HERE IS THE FIRST SCENARIO: You were in a “doomed” relationship for eight years. You knew that this relationship will end anyway. As a defence mechanism, your mind decided to process this breakup even before the actual breakup happened. You took your time experiencing the passion, harvesting the love, and then, you slowly began rolling downhill with the eventual anti-climax. In this scenario, the relationship ended a few years before the actual breakup. You just stayed in it out of convenience and until a more plausible choice arises. If that is what really happened, then you were indeed lucky to meet someone you could embrace that quickly, fall in love with, commit to, get engaged to, and will soon wed and marry. THE SECOND SCENARIO: You were in a “doomed” relationship for eight years. You knew that this relationship will end anyway. Rather sooner, than the doomed later, you decided to stop “wasting” your time and energy in a relationship that was not going anywhere. You looked around, evaluated your options, decided to choose the most suitable option, and, with some selfdiscipline, you managed to end the first relationship, commit to the second girl, and using common sense, good reasoning, and sound judgement, you decided to proceed with the marriage. If that is what really happened, you might have a huge setback after you are married. The grip of your mind will loosen, and you will miss the butterflies in you stomach, and the thrill of being in love. You will ache for your ex-girlfriend, or someone who offers you a relationship with similar intensity.

Does a relationship actually end when the guy tells the girl that it is over, or when she tells him that she is leaving? The answer is no.

THE THIRD SCENARIO: You were in a “doomed” relationship for eight years. You knew that this relationship will end anyway. Rather sooner, than the doomed later, you decided to stop “wasting” your time and energy in a relationship that was not going anywhere. With your own hands, you broke your heart. Better than waiting for the inevitable to happen, you decided that you will deal with the pain now. Just as you were about to start your journey of suffering and anguish, you met someone who absorbed the pain of falling from cloud 9. She was a soft pillow; a wide

mattress; a cushion that preserved you from the shattering pain you were about to experience. If this is what really happened, then your current relationship is the text-book rebound. You will eventually, regain your inner balance and stability, and you will no longer need “the cushion”.

Hence, my dear questioning man, only you can tell what really happened. Be warned: the mind plays amazing tricks on us and things are not usually what they seem to appear.

WHO SAID

THAT ROMANCE DIES WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS by Amina Moustapha

Right at the beginning, before the kids, the diapers, the sleepless nights, the ‘kid not eating well’, the school, the homework.... before all the hassle of childcare, there was only you and your partner. The romance was alive and sparkling, fitting in intimacy and conversations. Fun adventures were the rule rather than the exception. However, if you’re like the vast majority of parents, you’re probably directing most of your emotional energy these days toward your newest little love, your kids. Despite the fact that being a parent is one of the most amazing things that could happen to anyone, it is still a fulltime job, with no weekends or holidays. The working hours are endless. In a nutshell, it will tire the hell out of you, and more importantly it will change some aspects of your relationship with your spouse. The shift from husband and wife to mommy and daddy can be a tricky transition for some marriages. But that shift is inevitable, so instead of ignoring it, letting it control your life or worse yet fighting it off; you must learn how to embrace it. Today we are sharing tips couples follow to try and keep the romance alive after kids. Co-pilot Everything in Your Life Let’s start with the basics. One of the greatest challenges new couples come across these days in Egypt is breaking the mold regarding the fact that women are the ones responsible for raising kids. This was how the world wagged for many years, but nowadays women lead jobs as challenging as men do, so for her to take the wheel of parenthood on her own is so stressful and unfair, which drives the

?

marriage into a solid wall, and might even break it. Marriage is a partnership; the two parties must invest their time and effort equally. Only then, when the workload is divided and shared, the romance can find its way to sneak in and spark. Never Stop Dating Each Other You’ve probably read this one before, but I don’t mind repeating it since it’s an indispensable tip. Dating each other is what made you fall in love in the first place, because it was your chance to connect. It makes sense that you should keep dating to stay in love. If you don’t want the fire to die out, you got to keep blowing on the flames. It doesn’t have to be something fancy or extraordinary; it could be as simple as talking and laughing over a shared sandwich or takeout… in whispered tones so the baby stays asleep! Set aside time each week just for the two of you to reconnect, as husband and wife, instead of mom and dad. Don’t Always Put the Children First Well, I know this one might come as a surprise, but it is essential. One of the greatest things you can do for your kids is to sometimes place your spouse first! Let me elaborate. Putting your kids before your spouse is not you doing them any favours, in fact, you’re doing them a great disservice. You’re showing them an unbalanced way to love. Your children need you, but you know what they also need? A happy home. Happy couples create happy homes. It all provides them with a sense of safety and security; it shows them what real love should look like. Do everyone a favour and spoil your spouse every now and then. You both need it.

Lead a Double Life Becoming parents doesn’t mean you have jumped ships, and are now solely parents. It only means you have added a new title to your marriage, but the title ‘husband and wife’ is still valid. Be consistent and firm about bedtime; your kids must learn that after bedtime is “your time!” After 8 o’clock you’re not parents, you’re you. You’ve dealt with diapers and crying all day; you need a break and time to transition from “parents mode” to “couple mode.” Yes, being parents is a 24/7 gig, but so is being married! And you’ll be a much better, happier person if you make time for yourself too.

Show Affection toward Your Spouse In Front of the Kids Sometimes parents back off from showing affection toward each other in front of the kids, thinking it is the right thing to do. It is not right, and it is unhealthy for them too. It’s okay for them to see you kissing, cuddling, dancing, and being in love! In fact, it’s good for them. Part of our job as parents is to model what a strong marriage looks like. Besides, don’t you want it to be blaringly obvious for your kids to know that you and their dad/mom are madly in love? Why would you want to hide that from them?

HOW to Handle Fights Like a BOSS by Salma Elfeqy Some people associate fights with unhealthy or unsuccessful relationships, but this can be totally misleading. People need to understand that having fights with your partner is an inevitable and vital part of your relationship dynamics, because at times things might get rough on the both of you. What actually makes a relationship either healthy and successful or the total opposite is how you handle those fights. There are no certain guidelines to follow, however we tried to gather tips from couples in happy relationships and here is what we found. Face One Another Instead of Running Away It is very common for couples to run away from their problems and avoid confrontation till their issues fade away. This is very unhealthy, because both of you keep bottling up your unresolved issues till they get out of control. A combination of small insignificant disagreements can be inflated into a huge bubble of anger and sadness. You don’t want either of you to hold grudges against the other, so why not start by facing your problems instead of just ignoring them. Argue Like a Grown-up Don’t ever call each other names or mistreat each other just because you had a fight. This attitude might cost you both your whole relationship. Quit the sarcastic comments, names and eyeballing. Respect one another, even if you think that the points they're making are invalid. Apply the concept of ‘agree to disagree’ when things reach a dead end, instead of just making fun of what the other had to say. If you fight in a mature way, you might actually reach a conclusion that would resolve the whole misunderstanding.

what the other has to say. Don’t just sit there and nod while actually filtering every single word out of your system. Maybe there was miscommunication because of either of you not ‘listening carefully’ enough. Be Empathetic Even if you still believe that the person did you wrong and they owe you an apology, try to understand why they did it. Try to stand in their shoes and view things from their perspective. Maybe when you do that, you would actually understand how their head functions and eventually this fight would get you closer. Give Them The Benefit of The Doubt Know in your heart that your partner didn’t hurt you on purpose and try to give them an excuse. Don’t just jump to conclusions and make assumptions about why they did it, or that they meant to hurt you on purpose. Just listen again to what they have to say, and know that your partner loves you and wants to make this relationship work as much as you do.

Give Each Other Enough Time to Speak

Set Ground Rules For Your Fights

It is important to understand that the both of you need to talk and voice out your concerns. Each one of you should have a turn to speak up their mind freely; avoid cutting each other’s sentences because it truly makes a person feel unappreciated and disrespected.

Healthy couples do have some kind of a rulebook on how to handle arguments. Sit together and set those rules as a team, so that each one of you would know how to handle the other in a fight, and both of you would have realistic expectations and eventually no one would get disappointed.

Listen

Quit The ‘Win The Fight’ Attitude

It is not just about giving each other enough time to speak, both of you also need to listen carefully to

about is to find a solution for their problem and get back to their happy selves. It is okay to be the one who is wrong and it is okay to apologize, but never be this stubborn person who only cares about winning a useless fight. Know That You Are Both Part of a Team If you want to have a long lasting relationship with your partner, then you need to have this mindset embedded in you; especially during fights. Even if you both feel like you are so angry and mad at one another, deep down you should know that this is just a fight and you are ultimately a team that will conquer the world TOGETHER.

Never Hold Grudges After every fight just make a conscience decision that this fight is left in the past. Don’t ever use reference to a previous fight in another irrelevant one. Every argument should stay in the past, because this is how a healthy relationship is.

Eventually, know that it is okay to fight because, as much as we would like it to be, life is not a fairytale. Know that your partner loves you and cares about you even during those fights, and stop your insecurities from controlling how you both deal in a fight. IDENTITY 43

CAN EVERYDAY COUPLES BE

Power Couples

by Mariem Eltagoury

When we hear the term “Power Couple” we often think about the rich and famous, the celebrity, elitists like George and Amal Clooney, Beyonce and Jay-Z, or even famous couples from our side of the pond like Amr Youssef and Kinda Aloush, or Ahmed Helmy and Mona Zaki; and Mona Zaki, those untouchable personas who have it all; the success, the finances, the fame, the family, and the envy of all. Marriage for us everyday people is that unhappy place where dreams and passions go to die. However, reality can prove quite the opposite. If we look around us, we are surrounded with amazing everyday couples who re-ignite our faith in marriage. It could be that old couple who rocked the dance floor at your friend’s wedding, that couple at work who are always working on joint projects, that friend of yours who seems to have it all figured out with their spouse. 44 IDENTITY

?

As we watch those rare, real-life “power couples”, we can’t help but wonder how? What’s their secret? How can one become a real life “power couple”? What do real-life “power couples” do differently? Happiest Moments Are the Toughest Every couple has their challenging moments, but it’s the power couple that finds happiness in those troubled times. Whether it’s a financial struggle, an immigration issue, the house falling down; they’re not just about handling things with grace. They’ll take a moment to take a step back, look at each other and find a reason to smile. Most times we hear about strong couples making it through the rough times, but even if they do, the rough times gnaw their relationship bit by bit. If the kids/pets tore the house down and left it in shambles, some couples would argue whose fault it was, while others would get through the mess and move on. The power couple will laugh it off, take their woes and make amazing sex out of it. They know the problems will always be there; it’s what they make of them that matters. Both Have Ambitions and Both Support Them If she doesn’t like the job she’s in, he’ll push her to find something better, even if it means him working extra hours. If he needs to sign up for a course, she’ll pay the house bills so he can manage the fees. Neither person’s dreams are invalid, they both count. He’ll resign and they’ll travel to support her graduate studies. In the traditional society we live in, it is common to see the misconception that only men’s dreams are valid, but that leaves a wife feeling hurt and left behind, not a healthy relationship overall. Ambitions do require sacrifices, and both have to be willing to give in to one another to further both their dreams. The power couple finds this nice balance. Not Like Other Couples While most couples strive to be like other older couples or other couples surrounding them, power couples choose to be individualistic. Their love stories are different; they don’t strive to be like the movies. They could easily sacrifice materialistic, traditional matters, like the big wedding or owning their own place. They don’t want to be typical or settle even if they have children; life is different from when our grandparents were young. They’ll make the decision to take a few days off for a honeymoon “renewal”. They’ll find the things that make them happy and won’t stop, because marriage rules were never listed in a book or carved in stone.

Always Work on The Relationship Most power couples define it as actually sitting down to talk, sometimes arguing about changes and not allowing differences or minor disputes to accumulate and intoxicate the relationship They’ll study the current situation of the relationship; they’ll discuss minor details. They’ll make that effort. They know they’re not perfect, they understand that each one of them has traits that annoy the other beyond words. They find middle ground; they find ways to compensate their partner for their bad traits. They’ll do this tedious task of talking about the relationship over and over, again and again. Real Life Romance Human beings might not unite on one God, but they all seem to unite on the idea that marriage throws romance out the window! Candles and dinner are great aspects before marriage, but romance to power couples is more than just gestures. They believe romance lies in finding someone who accepts and loves you for who you are, the plain bland you, no additives added; and that weddings that follow only romantic sparks don’t last. Power couples also acknowledge that romance changes before and after marriage. They are at peace with it. While they do admit that, like everyone, the typical gift and flower bouquet still has its flair, there are other aspects that keep romance intact in a marriage. There’s the chat together after a long day, the cuddling while watching TV and cooking dinner together; all the small details that make life together special. They also express their feelings whenever, wherever, possible. When they feel they miss their partner, they pick up the phone and tell them. When they feel blessed with this partner, they get up to share a kiss and hug. They express emotion freely, no charge or second thoughts included! They’re “Our” Children The most popular Egyptian phrase for married men, “They’re your children”. Power couples don’t use that term; they believe they both made the child and they should both be responsible for it. Signs of a power couple man is when he complains that men don’t get maternity leave like women to help with the child around the house. They’ll be taking it in turns to change diapers, feed the child, checking up on the baby in the middle of the night. They both shall be taking turns with staying at home with the baby while the other gets a break to catch up with friends. Yes, they will support each other’s sanity throughout the struggle.

IDENTITY 45

Understand That Emotional Satisfaction Is Most Important Unlike celebrity power couples, real-life power couples don’t have it so easy. They stick together through thick and thin, and in this economy, it means a lot of the finer things that money can buy have to go out the door. Some have sacrificed a grand wedding that most young ladies dream of, others have found themselves sleeping on a mattress in an apartment lent to them by a friend, some have wed and directly moved out of the country to face a new life in a foreign country together, others have had to struggle to meet all the bills dumped on them by the arrival of an unexpected baby. Nevertheless, when you ask if they have found satisfaction and fulfilment in marriage, they answer with a ‘yes’ and a smile brighter than most financially well-off couples. They have found a partner who loves them and accepts them for who they are, who doesn’t want to change them, only support them. Their partners grant them confidence in their life choices, and they don’t fear talking their mind in their partner’s presence. They have found love, respect, and support. In the world of power couples, that is worth so much more than money. Chores Were Made to Be Shared If the purpose of marriage was to find someone to cook and clean, hiring a maid could cost one much less. Marriages that happen due to boredom and life emptiness usually end up with broken promises and less commitment. While it was promoted in the 80s and 90s that a woman can do it all: cook, clean, etc.. power couples know this is a lie. No one is superhuman to juggle everything together. As they support each other’s dreams, help each other with the bills, they also share chores. It’s both their home, both their bed, both their bellies. Couples Who Pay Together Stay Together You might have already predicted that power couples share financial responsibilities, but there’s a catch. They both carry the responsibility together AND recognize it’s “his” or “her” money. It’s not “our” money. In other words, there is a sharing of responsibility with full recognition of each other’s participation. This is a very interesting aspect as traditional Egyptian couples either go for “the man

46 IDENTITY

carries all expenses”, or it’s “our money, let’s start a joint account.” By time they forget who supplied what, and the account ends up with a heavy interest of relationship bitterness. Power couples are in full recognition of who paid what and when. This acknowledgment of each other breeds gratitude for each other’s efforts. It’s recognition that they’re both making an extra effort and walking the extra mile for one another; neither forgets and both show full support for the other. Marriage Is Not About Making Babies If a couple marry for the sole purpose of having children, please don’t. They’ll grow to become a family disappointment and a depressed society burden – not because they want to, or due to bad parenting. The disappointment shall come from their resemblance to a spouse who is now despised, and the depressed burden shall be due to the lack of optimism to look up to at home, creating a hesitant, unsure shell of a person. Power couples do not believe that marriage is about making babies. Many decide to skip parenting, and those who want to become parents plan. They try not to have a baby immediately after marriage; they give themselves time to settle character differences and basic beginner couple disputes first, so as not to affect their child negatively. Disagreement Is a Sign of a Healthy Relationship Power couples believe that if two people agree on everything, one – or perhaps both - of them is lying through their teeth. It is normal for two people to disagree on issues. When disagreements occur, they discuss and find a middle ground that suits both parties. When they reach a dead end, they settle on expertise. They understand that each of them has qualities and experiences that the other doesn’t. Whoever has more expertise gets the Veto vote, the other surrenders, calm maintained. Power couples also believe that fighting is healthy, as long as no insults are thrown around – and definitely no violence involved – they believe fights between partners show they care. If one partner settles on just appeasing the other, it’s a sign that the relationship is in danger.

They believe romance lies in finding someone who accepts and loves you for who you are, the plain bland you, no additives added; and that weddings that follow only romantic sparks don’t last.

Know That All Those Mean Jokes About Commitment Are Just Jokes

they’re ready to take on commitment bravely and wisely.

We are raised in a world hearing the most horrid, crooked jokes about commitment and marriage. Power couples acknowledge that society and media are toxic when it comes to defining relationships, so naturally, they don’t feed on it.

If there’s a common understanding between a pair that they as a couple come first, and that being part of a good marriage or family life complements what happens in one’s professional life, if part of their values as a couple is to support one another, that can do a lot of good for the family. It can influence how people feel about their marriages or families and can promote better values amongst society. We don’t believe that “power couples” are impossible, and being with someone who shares the same values can influence people to be the best version of themselves.

They strongly believe that if you find the right person who fully accepts, loves, and respects you for who you are, the stakes of having a successful committed relationship are quite high. They acknowledge that marriage is not a honeymoon, it’s hard work; that no real person looks as perfect as those on screen; and that cliché romance scenes are just for the movies. With their reality in check and toxic jokes aside,

Where & How to Train as a Couple by Salma Elfeqy

Working out with your partner is one of the most motivating ways to keep active and staying fit. You would think that it is a bit embarrassing to sweat like a pig in front of your significant other, maybe it does at first, but later on it gets pretty sexy. Not just that, but the challenge of ‘who will become more fit’ or ‘who will lose more weight’ keeps you super motivated. Guys always think that they are stronger than girls, while girls always believe that they can beat their guys. To make it easier for you, let’s compete against one another in one of these places or when doing any of these activities and see who wins.

ROUTINES AND PROGRAMS 1. T25 PROGRAM This is a program that you can either download online or buy through Amazon. Shaun T is the amazing instructor who created insanity workout as well. He acknowledged that people are busy and don’t have enough time to work out; that’s why he created a 25-minute workout that suits people with busy lives. You train 5 days a week for only 25 minutes per day. There are three different levels and you have to go through them all for maximum results. Each day has a different workout routine that works on a certain body part. There are four people doing the routine, where one of them is a modified version. The idea of having a modified version is smart as not all people are skilled enough to do some of the moves. It is encouraged that you have a partner when doing T25 because it gets you to be committed. 2. STRETCHES AND PILATES What is amazing about stretches and Pilates is that you don’t actually need a lot of time to do the routine, and you can see progress within weeks only

if you are consistent. Ask your partner to join you for a flexible body that needs minimal effort and time. Single Leg Circles Lay down on a mat with your shoulders down, with one leg raised up straight pointing to the sky and the other one bent with a flat foot on the floor. Keep doing circles with your raised leg and then switch after a specific number of counts. You will be working out your core, legs and back muscles. Criss Cross Lay on your back with your hands supporting your head and your knees pulled towards your chest. Extend each leg at a time while having the other leg bent and switch. 3. PUSH-UPS AND PULL-UPS Have two mats right next to each other, and start doing your push-ups and pull-ups. If you are unable to do the regular push-ups, then you can follow the modified push-ups instead where you have your knees on the floor. Have a couple of rounds daily and compete against each other, and you will find that exercising suddenly got a little bit more fun.

PLACES 1. CROSSFIT If you want an environment that is already competitive and efficient, then this is definitely your place to go. You will be able to meet lots and lots of people and compete against each other as well. You will have a trainer that gives you a dietary plan and checks your performance along with your progress since you started. Not just that, but you can find a nearby spot because they are spread all around Egypt with different price ranges. It is also great that they have flexible timings, so you can go to a session right before work or after work, whichever suits you. You don’t have to stick to a number of sessions per week, which makes it flexible for the both of you! And don’t worry about the level of skills needed; you can be a beginner who only knows how to use the stairs. 2. YOGA Practicing yoga doesn’t only help you become fitter, but it also makes you feel more relaxed and helps you meditate which maximizes your inner peace and happiness. Doing this with your partner will definitely bring you closer than you can imagine, because both of you will be getting

rid of the toxicity of your daily routines. You will be less stressed, which will nurture your relationship even more. There are lots of places that offer professional yoga training all around the country for varying prices. Some of these places are: On The Mat Studio Where: 5 Al-Morsalin St. from Shagaret El-Dor St., 1st floor, Apartment 4, Zamalek Contacts: 011 4446 8888 – 012 2228 1516 Tawazon Studio Where: 5 Youssef El Guindy St., Apartment 23, Bab El Louq Contacts: 010 9555 7266

You Need To Know About Nora Roberts’ Year One by Amina Moustapha

To be #1 New York Times Bestselling Author is every novelist’s dream, but for Nora Roberts that’s her reality. Since 1999, Nora Roberts has been on a streak; every title she had written until this very day has hit the New York Times bestseller list! With her signature blend of romance and suspense, Roberts has written more than 200 novels, and with more than 500 million copies in print, they've collectively spent more than 1,000 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. That should give you an idea who this phenomenal author is! Roberts has taken her readers to places near and far; the Greek Island of Corfu, the cliffs of Ireland, the Alaskan wilderness, and in her newest novel “Year One” she takes us to a dystopian, post-apocalyptic New York City. The book marks the end of the world, and throughout the story we meet the survivors, the ones who are fighting for a new beginning. Got you hooked yet? Read along the 7 things you must know about “Year One” and you definitely will get hooked:

50 IDENTITY

1. “Year One” is the First Book of a Planned Trilogy When the world ends, “Year One” begins. But that’s not all there is to this breathtaking story; it is just the start of a capturing trilogy. In November 2018, “Of Blood & Bones” the second book in the chronicle will be released. News about the third book is yet to be announced, but Roberts is known for her quick writing so before long it will hit the bookshelves. 2. No One Can Develop Characters The Way Roberts Does “Books and stories for me are all about the people in them.” Roberts loves a crowded book, full of characters, who love, hate and fight with each other. Her words are what run in their bloodstream. Her imagination makes their hearts beat on papers, that’s one of her signatures. In this story she developed the characters so beautifully. Lana, Max, Chuck, Fred, Arlys, Rachel,Jonah...... There are a lot of them to keep track of, but she took her time in letting us get to know them so the number is manageable. The relationships formed among the characters are very believable. There is a lot of dialogue versus narrative, which keeps the story moving at a quick pace. 3. It is the Darkest Roberts’ Books Have Ever Gotten The book is an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magic, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives. Roberts has gotten her readers used to some darkness and wickedness, but it seems that in this novel she outdid herself. 4. Yes, There Is Magic Like her fellow writer JK Rowling, Roberts is always asked if her books will feature magic because apart from being the queen of Romantic Fiction, she masters witchcraft tales. In “Year One” we witness the sickness spreading quickly, and more than half of the world’s population was decimated, and as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk

anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river, or in the ones you know and love the most. 5. There is No Central Love Story In “Year One” That’s a new for Roberts’ trilogies. Her readers are used that each book will feature one love story of the main three couples of the saga, but it seems Roberts wanted to play it differently this time. In “Year One”, you will meet Lana and Max, who are forced to reckon with their new post-apocalyptic home and find their way out of the dangerous city. According to Roberts, their romance won’t be the main focus of “Year One”. “At least in the opening book,” she says, “the story can’t centre on a central love story and hold for the rest.” 6. Roberts said “Year One” Was Difficult to Write As we mentioned before, Roberts has written more than 200 novels, so for her to acknowledge that this book was the hardest that should give you a glimpse of what that book held between its pages. On her blog, Fall Into The Story, Roberts wrote: “The process of structuring this story – and laying the groundwork for the two that will follow – presented a creative challenge. For the first time in too long to remember a book woke me up at night, or kept me up. Writing it proved hard and bumpy and frustrating and tremendous fun. Finishing it was, for me, monumental.” 7. The Book Is Receiving Strong Reviews We have round up for you “Year One” major reviews: Washington Post says: “Roberts knows exactly how to spellbind an audience. And “Year One” barrels along for a couple hundred pages with heartbreaking losses, hair-raising escapes and gruesome attacks.” Kirkus calls it “A fast-paced, mesmerizing, and thought-provoking novel that will no doubt add to Roberts’ legions of fans.” Publisher Weekly declares that “Roberts knows how to write a page-turner; readers who are after a welltold apocalyptic story with magical touches will be satisfied.” Finally, Booklist says of Roberts’ new direction, “What Roberts has done, with her radical departure, is ensure that she will find new fans among readers attracted to apocalyptic sci-fi and speculative fiction.”

Palazzo del Te

A Monument of Love that Reveals its Secrets by Amina El Ghandour

Throughout history lovers commemorated their love stories in all forms of art - poetry, songs, paintings and buildings. The charming Palazzo del Te in the suburbs of Mantua stands as a witness to the passionate love affair between Isabella Boschetti and Frederico II Gonzaga, the Duke of Mantua. Intrigued by the intertwined passions, aspirations and art within the fabrics of this monument, here is the story of the Palazzo del Te. 52 IDENTITY

An affair unravelled Frederico II comes from the ruling family of Mantua. When His father died in 1519, his mother, a powerful woman with education and connections, took over and advanced Mantua’s political position until Frederico came of age and became the Duke of Mantua in 1521. Frederico II and Isabella had met around 1516; they were both approximately 16 years of age. It is not clear whether she was already married at the time or married later. In all cases a marriage between them was evidently not possible, however love was inevitable. Isabelle was beautiful, that she was known as ‘la bella Boschetta’, and her intellect was obviously equally enticing. The love between her and Frederico II endured for a long time, despite the scrutiny of his powerful mother and others in court. Frederico built the Palazzo del Te for Isabelle in 1525, where she was neither kept from the public nor was their affair ever hidden; in fact, the couple received and entertained guests together and the palace eventually became the location for official court affairs. The couple even had two children together, Emilia and Alessandro. And the impresa (symbolic emblem) of Isabelle and of Frederico was coupled in the palace’s La Camera delle Impresse, showing them as an integral part of the Gonzaga family to this day. The Palace, where love and art are unleashed Leisure palaces were common in Rome and Pompeii, adorned with scenes of sex, food and wine, to entice the spectators. So, it was no surprise that Frederico II, in an era of waked humanism in Italy, chose to build a pleasure palace in the style of a Roman villa for his mistress. Frederico chose to build his pleasure palace at the family’s estate of Isola del Tel, at the outskirts of Mantua, where the family kept their horses. His choice of the architect was another enthralling aspect. Giulio Romano had just escaped a jail sentence for designing pornographic prints, when Frederico commissioned him to transform the family stables into a magnificent palace. But Giulio Romano was not only a troublemaker, he was a genius.

They say the Palazzo del Te is the creation of a madman. While in 16th century Italy classical art was revived and held in high esteem, Giulio played with it and went beyond it. His design rendered distorted perceptions like faux columns and symbolic rustications; through these visual tricks Giulio was able to give an impression of a building grander than it actually was. He created it with a ‘make believe’ concept, where paintings of horses and mythological heroes in action had a 3D effect. The Sala dei Cavalli (Hall of the horses) is the largest room in the palace, where receptions for important guests and ceremonies were held. It was designed as homage to the family’s wealth and status as the Gonzagas were renowned horse breeders. But the leisure palace had to have a leisure room, and that would be the Camera di Amore e Psiche; the Hall of Love and Psyche, tells of the love between Cupid and Psyche and other mythological tormented love stories like that of Jupiter and Olympias. The metaphor of the tormented love brings visitors inevitably to the story of Frederico and Isabelle. The rich scenes of sex, eroticism and leisure makes it a 16th century masterpiece – and will always remind visitors that the Palazzo del Te was a lovers’ haven, after all. The Hall of the Sun depicts a marvellous fresco of Apollo riding the chariot of the sun and a ceiling with the alternation of the stars. The Chamber of Giants is the first of its kind in the world; the scenes are theatrical, vivid and highly animated and the room’s vaulted ceiling renders great sound resonance. In short, a walk through the variant rooms of the Palazzo del Te engages your every sense.

The work on this marvellous monument of love took 10 years. The palace was initially designed as a lovers’ haven, but eventually became a scene of art, culture and political aspirations in the 16th century. Today the Palazzo del Te is still so powerfully enticing, a masterpiece of architectural mannerism on the outside and a vibrant drama of passion, ambition, torment and triumph, on the inside. Giulio Romano employed his best talents to create a building that vividly painted the story that Frederico II Gonzaga wanted to tell the world, of his love, his family and his status.

Mohamed Shelbaya: Turning Thinking into Strategy A closer look on Egypt’s Food and Beverage sector through the eyes of an expert: Mohamed Shelbaya, PepsiCo’s CEO. • What are your expectations for the targeted growth rates in the upcoming year? PepsiCo perceives Egypt as a country with rich history and diversified resources, which projects a very bright future. Over the past period, several reforms have taken place and several important milestones have been reached. Although some of the adopted measures have shown less positive repercussions at the short term and created economic pressures on consumers but are positively expected to assemble a more favourable environment on the long-term. Egypt’s macro indicators as reported by International institutions and credit agencies ratings illustrate that the country is moving towards an increased provisionary growth rate. As per State Information Service, the portfolio of investments in Egypt has hit $16 billion this year and foreign direct investment rose by 13%. This is also strengthened by the business sector’s future plans to rely on local components in their production process benefiting from the difference in exchange rates and the diminishing value of the pound against the dollar. We deliberate the government’s recent efforts towards supporting SMEs and raising a financial inclusion notion of great value to the market, specifically at this phase. In my opinion, a competitive and inclusive private sector, supported by sustainable and more commercially-run infrastructure is crucial. In addition, being enabled by a fair and more conducive business environment, are key engines for economic growth and job creation. We place confidence in Egypt’s potentials and we are concurrently working through our “Performance with Purpose” strategy to certify that both the public and private sector are working hand in hand to ensure the well-being of all Egyptians. PWP is our fundamental belief that the success of our company is inextricably linked to the sustainability of the world around us. However, one of the fundamental

challenges faced by the sector is embodied by the mismatch between educational system’s provisions and job market requirements. Hence, PepsiCo has been fixated on developing and empowering the youth through a group of initiatives that invest in young calibers, create an entrepreneurial ecosystem and enable innovation. All delivered it in a way that is responsible and responsive to the needs of society. • What are the main sectors that could strongly participate in this growth? Last year’s achieved growth was higher than expected, thus the GDP growth rates in the first quarter of 2017 accelerated from 3.6% to 4.3%. Surely led by manufacturing, construction, tourism, and retail trade. In addition to an augmented foreign direct investment that rose by 13%. The FMCG solely contributed by 15.7% of Egypt’s GDP with an estimated market value of $29.2bn in 2015/2016, gradually increasing over the years. The FMCG is superbly vibrant and has abundant exporting potentials. Moreover, the industrial and agricultural sector are both vital in order to efficaciously achieve sustainable growth. Consequently, the agriculture sector plays a major role in supporting national income, achieving food security, and providing raw materials for numerous significant industries. PepsiCo grasped the importance of this sector years ago. Accordingly, in cooperation with 3,000 Egyptian farmers, we productively managed to cultivate 40,000 acres of farmland (Egypt is PepsiCo’s third-largest agro program anywhere in the world by volume) to produce our snacks from 100% locally produced potatoes.
