letter from the editors

T

hey say life is what you make of it, and that is exactly the same for Valentine’s Day. There is probably not another day whose spirit has been so overrun by marketing and commercialisation that the true meaning is completely buried. What is supposed to be a celebration of love has become a cliché that we tend to hate more than we like. Feeling like we are supposed to follow the “date plus flowers plus anything red” formula has made it mundane and fake very fast. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Maybe to the world it has become an overdone and commercialised holiday based in chocolate sales, but if you want to make it something more special than you should. Go ahead and celebrate the love in your life. Make some special plans with your special someone.

Send notes to everyone you love telling them how much you appreciate them. Call your parents, just because. Go out with your friends and enjoy time spent together. Make sprinkled cookies and glittery crafts with your kids, then share them at work. Get all dolled up to go out while listening to your favourite love songs. Donate or volunteer with your favourite charity. Watch a movie or read a book that warms your heart, and then share it with someone. Whatever celebrating love means to you, do it. Don’t let the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day take that from you.

psychological insight

The Laws of Attraction by Kate Kerpez

Do opposites attract, or do similarities draw people together? According to psychologists, the latter is true. Similar people often attract, but romantic relationships can develop in a variety of ways.

interestingly, the preference for similar physical attraction was stronger than personality.

Some of the other factors that play into attraction are more unexpected. Proximity, for instance, is an important factor in the formation of relationships. Typically, we are drawn to similar appearances and Research shows that people who live closer to one personalities. In one study, participants were shown another are more likely to develop intimately close pictures of faces, including one that was edited to relationships. A study of college students living in look like the participant’s own face, and asked to dorms showed a 41% chance that a student would rate the attractiveness of each face. People found list the person one door away as a close friend, but the faces that looked most similar to their own more only a 10% chance that they would do the same for appealing. the person four doors away. The idea that we are most attracted to people similar to ourselves is called the matching hypothesis, and it is supported by many studies, including a study of blind dates for a college dance. Students in the study were randomly assigned a blind date to the school dance and the physical attractiveness of the students was rated. As one might predict, the students whose dates were very attractive reported high satisfaction with their dates.

Attraction can also be influenced by adrenaline. People who meet on a high, shaky bridge have stronger feelings of attraction than people who meet on a low, sturdy bridge because of the adrenaline rush that occurs in the former case. The adrenaline spike that occurs in dangerous situations is associated with feelings of attraction, and so we might interpret the increased heart rate or sweaty palms accompanied by adrenaline as attraction. This means it might be a good idea to watch a thrilling movie on your next date - the adrenaline rush from watching car chases or monsters jumping out of dark corners may be the key to a second date.

The matching hypothesis therefore holds true for physical attraction, and it appears to be true of personality as well. Whether it be romantic relationships or just friendships, psychologists know that we tend to prefer people who are similar to Wherever our attractions come from, Valentine’s Day us. The school dance study also found that students is the perfect time to appreciate them. So turn on a preferred dates with similar personalities, but scary movie and enjoy!

advice New Yearguru

After my divorce I decided to live my life and wanted to experience it all. Now I met a guy at my new job. I like him, and he said he does too. The problem is that with everything that has happened I feel stuck. I don’t know how to act or what to do with him. I’m fairly old now, and I’m scared of screwing things up. How do I keep the relationship, and how do I not let my past haunt me? DEAR LOOKING FOR ADVICE First of all, let me assure you that you are not old! You are just beginning an exciting new phase in your life. In the past phase of your life you acted upon the experience and tutoring of your parents, peers, and social circle, but now you are about to discover who you really are! You are discovering the fire within you and your passions, your true beliefs, your own priorities, your special code of ethics, and your personal values, mission, and vision. Most people start that journey of self-exploration towards their thirties and I have known people who started in their sixties. It is never too late to truly embrace yourself.

Love Yourself First by Marwa Rakha

DEAR MARWA, I’m a 29 year old woman raised in a fairly openminded family, but I’ve always been conservative. Ever since I was young, I was extremely old fashioned in my thinking, and the idea of being friends with guys and even communicating with them was absurd. I also wanted nothing but to get married and have kids. When I was only 22, I thought I was getting old and never going to get married, since no one had proposed to me at the time. As soon as I got a proposal from an arranged marriage I agreed, even though my family strongly disagreed with the guy because he wasn’t good enough. Later, the engagement broke off, and I went into a depressive state. A couple of years later, someone else proposed, arranged as well, and I again agreed even though my family disagreed. The engagement phase had many red signals to break it, but I still went on with it, because I feared my reputation after 2 failed engagements would be bad. Obviously, the marriage failed after 6 months, and we got a divorce. I was 28 and had done nothing; I never had real friends or went out in large groups. 20 Identity February 2016

My advice can be summed up in one phrase: SLOW DOWN! If you rush yourself into another marriage, you will end up exactly where you are now – only with deeper scars. I want you to grow more familiar with yourself and to feel comfortable in your own skin. Get to know many people from different paths of life who share a multitude of interests with you and get to know them in depth. As for your colleague, I would advise you to slow down again! Hold on to your heart and do not confuse attraction or addiction with love! Enjoy the steady and slow pace of getting to know him; get to know what he likes, what he enjoys, and what he stands firmly against. Go out a lot, visit places together, read books together, and gradually open up to one another. Your worst enemies in this process will be: the fear of loneliness, societal pressure, and your own comfort zone! Your only defense will come from the desire to enjoy your life instead of putting an end to it – yes! Refusing to know who you are is equivalent to extinguishing the fire that keeps your soul alive. Enjoying the journey will help you avoid the heartache that comes with unmet expectations, rejection, and judgment! Everyone will judge you for the things you did, for the things you did not do, and for the things you want to do. During the upcoming phase of your life, you will learn how to become your own judge and guide and this is how maturity is defined. February 2016 Identity 21

What your gift says about YOUR MAN by Amina Moustapha

you better than you know yourself, so it’s either he wants to piss you off, or he doesn’t know you that well after all. In this case, your relationship needs work or else it will head South.

THE LOVEY-DOVEY GIFT

Romantic presents are like double-edged swords; the man might be intending to dazzle but in fact he just spooks you. If he showers you with presents, that screams insecurity, and if he gets you those big red hearts with your name all over them… Hello? Who wants to be with a sappy partner?

THE GIFT ACTUALLY FOR HIM

Unless you’re a soccer fan, why would your gift be tickets for a football match? Or why would you end up with a Playstation if you’re not a gamer? Sorrowfully let me tell you, if you’re with this type, you’ve drawn the short straw. What makes his self-centered and thoughtless present even worse is that he doesn’t even realize why the gift is so bad.

THE OVERPRICED GIFT

THE GIFT YOU HATE

Unless you really are impossible to please, there is no excuse for your significant other to get you something you don’t like. He’s supposed to know 22 Identity February 2016

A gift doesn’t have to be expensive, or even romantic, to be perfect. It’s just got to be right. When your significant other gets you that one gift that will make you jump around like a six-year old and throw yourself in his arms, that’s when you know you’ve got it right. The perfect gift is the one that should win you over. There are no catalogues for it, you will just know. We all want that man, and he is a keeper.

To give them their due, some men are just bad at giving gifts, but that doesn’t always make them bad partners. Life is a bone of contention, we don’t always get what we want.

Unless you like something so dearly you want to get it every year, ‘rinse and repeat’ is not a good sign. Beware that your partner is heading into that ugly and mundane zone we call “Boredom.” So spice things up a little, it’s never too late.

This type tries to find a way to show that he cares, and he does it in an off-the-wall way, like buying you some painless piercings, roller skates, or even a PacMan Color Changing Ghost Lamp. His presents are risky gambles, sometime you will yay, sometimes you will nay, but it’s the thought that counts, so give the guy some credit.

Funny Things Men Do Before V-Day by Liza Dunham

February brings with it a load of pressure for any man in a relationship. They know it is like an annual test of their love and devotion, and they will be scored on their effort and taste in gifts. All of this weight on their shoulders can cause them to do some pretty funny and extreme things while bracing for the big day. BREAK UP

Maybe this doesn’t fall under the category of “funny,” but this is a classic move for any man who decided that Valentine’s Day is just way too much pressure. We get it. Pulling off a good “Day of Love” for your special someone either takes a lot of hard cash or a lot of effort into doing something genuinely creative, and guys are not always up to the challenge. Breaking up with you is like the cheap way out of not having to deal with any of the mushy romance or bills that come with it. But they should know we can put two and two together.

There are some men who hate Valentine’s Day as much as they hate Justin Bieber, and wish that you would forget about it all together. They may not go as far as breaking up with you, but they will do everything in their power to convince you that you don’t need a day to celebrate your love. All of this is so they can get out of buying you a gift.

PRETEND TO HATE IT

The other breed of men like to do the same, but in order to surprise you instead. They will pretend to be the grinch of Valentine’s Day, complaining about how it is so commercialised, fake, and overdone. Then after completely draining any expectations you might have for romance, considering yourself lucky if you even get a simple “I love you” on the big day, he will turn around and shock you with a perfectly planned day and gift! Just make sure you didn’t believe his charade to the point you didn’t get him a gift in return, or the night might end on an awkward note.

PLAY SECRET AGENT

They are always insisting that women are impossible to figure out, so some men take February as their chance to spy and investigate what we could possibly want. If they can’t get wise to any of the obvious hints we are leaving around every corner, they will try to get the information from our friends and sisters without us finding out.

TALK UP THEIR GIFT

Sometimes men like to use Valentine’s Day as a bit of fun leverage by constantly reminding us how much they spent on our gift. That’s all good and well only if we are actually wowed on February 14th, otherwise, he is better off saving his breath. 24 Identity February 2016

Valentine’s Day

No man? No problem by Yasmine Saad

It’s that time of the year again and love is in the air. Flowers, balloons, and hearts surround you; but it looks like this year you might spend the day of romance alone. But hey, you do not need a man to enjoy Valentine’s Day! Here are some ideas for all of you fabulous single ladies out there: 1. BUY YOURSELF A GIFT

Ladies, let’s get real. Only a few guys really know how to surprise us. We’re the only ones that know what we actually like. Buy yourself those shoes that you have been wanting for five months now or that seasonal MAC lipstick that is out. You deserve it!

2. THROW A PARTY

Let’s be realistic here. You are definitely not the only one of your friends spending Valentine’s Day alone. Call up your friends and throw yourselves a party, celebrate yourselves and the friendship you share.

3. TREAT YOURSELF TO A SPA DAY

Nothing is more relaxing than going to a spa or a salon alone and just indulging yourself. Get your hair done, get a manicure and pedicure, or get a massage.

4. FALL IN LOVE

No, not with a new guy but try falling in love with a new hobby. Take this time to explore yourself and your interests. Pick something up that you have 26 Identity February 2016

always wanted to try, but never had the time to get to it before, such as yoga, painting, etc. You may find a hobby that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

5. GIRLS’ NIGHT

Have a single ladies night out! Get all dolled up together and hit the town. Just enjoy your time, because nothing is better than some quality time with your girls.

6. SEND LOVE TO PEOPLE AROUND YOU

A small act of kindness can make someone else’s whole day. It may even cause them to do another act of kindness for someone else that is around them. Buy someone close to you like a friend or a co-worker flowers and put a smile on their face. Spread the love!

7. JUST STAY HOME

There is absolutely nothing wrong with just staying at home and enjoying your own company. Find your comfiest pajamas and pamper yourself with whatever you want. You can take this time to reflect or to just relax and watch a movie.

Whatever you do, do not let the fact that you do not have a significant other bring you down. There are so many ways to enjoy the day than just spending it with a guy. February 2016 Identity 27

V-Day Traditions Cheesier than Egypt by Liza Dunham

Egyptians can really pull all the stops when it comes to being excessively romantic, sentimental, and dare we say, cheesy. This corny characteristic comes out in full force during the month of February as the masses celebrate the day of love. We do not need to see one more red teddy bear or car covered with flowers and mushy stickers. But believe it or not, there are actually some places around the world that top even Egypt 1. THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines easily take the cake in this competition. It has become a trend in this country to have mass weddings on Valentine’s Day, making February 14th a shared anniversary between thousands and thousands of couples. Each year, thousands of lovers either tie the knot or renew their vows on this day. It actually makes sense; they just guaranteed that they will always be able to kill both their anniversary gift and Valentine’s Day gift with one stone.

2. SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa comes in next, with its mushy ritual of women wearing their hearts on their sleeves. This is an ancient Roman tradition known as “lupercalia,” where women pin the name of their sweetheart to their sleeves. Even for those who are in relationships, this is way too cutesy for us to get on board. For those who are not in relationships, we think it would be better to tell your crush you like him in person rather than letting everyone else find out first.

3. GHANA

Ghana isn’t in this competition because of anything the lovers do, but actually what the tourism of ministry does. Because Ghana is one of the largest 28 Identity February 2016

cocoa exporters in the world, there is a rush of propaganda on Valentine’s Day as “National Chocolate Day.” This promotion is complete with museum exhibits and special chocolate-themed restaurant menus. We love chocolate as much as the next person, but that’s a little over the top.

4. DENMARK

In Denmark, Snowdrops are the flowers of choice instead of roses. That’s something we can work with, at least it’s different. But then sometimes lovers exchange romantic poems. Please, you’re making us cringe.

5. ESTONIA

In Estonia, Valentine’s Day is commonly known as “Friends Day” instead. That’s like replacing one cheesy thing with another, we don’t need a day to appreciate our sweethearts or our friends! We can handle that fine on our own, thank you very much. On top of that, Estonians like to play cupid on this wintry day and send singles for a ride on the Love Bus in hopes they might find someone that catches their attention. We don’t even know what to say.

This is a bit tricky because you want to look made up for the nighttime but also not too cakey for the daytime. Well, don’t worry we’ve got you covered. A natural bb cream with a tint of bronzer will give you that natural beach look (and the SPF doesn’t hurt either!). A very thin winged eyeliner and a natural lip will do the trick.

This photoshoot captures a very special collection by the Egyptian fashion designer Farida Temraz, founder and owner of Temraza. Showcased at the LA Fashion Week, each dress is inspired by the personalities of Hollywood Stars, including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez. Farida’s main aim was to make any woman wearing her designs to feel as if she is a star surrounded by the fans and glamour of Hollywood, red carpet and all. Farida also believed that fashion and music are the nearest forms of expressing the inexpressible. Each dress has a story behind it and was inspired by a musical instrument, whether it is the guitar, piano, or drums. In the fashion world, Farida is quite the star herself. Her designs have been worn by actress Laura Marano, and she is currently working on a piece for singer Christina Milian. The LA Fashion Week was her third, having also attended the fashion weeks in London and Paris, bringing home awards and recognition each time. Farida captured the lights and ambiance of landmark Hollywood Hills with the designs and movements of her dresses, down to the tiniest details. She saw incorporating her stunning embroidery as a challenge. At first she was opposed to it, but then determined to include it in a modern, chic, and elegant way. Everything in this collection is about the details, meant to grab attention worthy of the brightest star in Hollywood. 42 Identity February 2016

Don’t Go Cheap on the Menu While price might be at the forefront of your mind, remember that some cuisines are simply more romantic than others. Of course if you and your sweetheart have a special favourite, indulge in that. Otherwise, leave the more adventurous options for another day, and opt for something classic, like French. Essentially, anything that is tricky to eat and takes the attention from the date, avoid it.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

Don’t Think Any Lighting Is Okay

by Liza Dunham

Avoid anything that is so bright and awkward you feel as if you are in the spotlight. You should be able to relax in soft light that will compliment both you and your date’s features.

If you have Valentine’s Day marked in your calendar this year, make sure you do it right and cut the sap.

Don’t Underestimate Your Time

DO’S AND DON’TS OF PLANNING

We are all guilty of running late, but you don’t want to be stressed rushing to your date. It will quickly kill your mood and start the night on the wrong foot. When making your reservation, give yourself ample time to make it there from work, including prep time.

Do Keep the Interests and Passions of Your Partner in Mind

Don’t Pick a Restaurant That’s Not “You”

The last thing you want to do is plan a date that only you will enjoy. Dates do take two, after all; so don’t plan an outing to an extravagant Italian restaurant if your lover doesn’t like Italian.

Do Plan in Advance

DO’S AND DON’TS OF DINING Do Not Forget Your Family Members

Do Make Service a Top Priority

Do Not Try to Have a Romantic Walk Along the Nile

This can make or break any restaurant, so make sure for Valentine’s that your restaurant of choice Don’t Take a Picture of Your Food has good reviews when it comes to service. Look for Not only does taking a picture of your food interrupt warmth, courtesy, and style. the flow of the evening, it can actually be rude, especially if you picked a fine dining restaurant. Trust Do Dress for the Occasion us, Instagram doesn’t need another filtered photo We have full confidence that you have a great sense with the hashtag “foodporn.” This date is about of style, just make sure your Valentine’s Day outfit you and your special someone, not about everyone lines up with the mood of the restaurant. If you look knowing what you did for Valentine’s. too elegant, too casual, too sexy, or not sexy enough, you will feel out of place. BE CREATIVE

Last minute planning will limit your choices and make it harder to do what you really want, especially if your Valentine’s Day is not just about lovers, it should be restaurant pick requires a reservation. It also means a celebration of love in general. It may not require a you will have less of a chance to think out of the box. gift for everyone, but at least a phone call and a nice card to show you were thinking of them.

Do Include Authenticity However you choose to celebrate, make sure to do it from the heart. The holiday is already made fake enough by society, you don’t need to be fake with your sweetheart as well.

Do Try to Ask for Time Off You can at least give it a shot; Valentine’s Day comes on a Sunday this year, so you could even make a long romantic weekend out of it if that’s what your relationship needs. Or if you can’t travel, nothing is more romantic than sleeping in and getting brunch together.

Do Pick Your Restaurant and Gift with Care

We repeat, do not try to have a romantic walk along the Nile. Yes, we understand the appeal of the ancient banks, but not only is it cheesy, it will be crowded and nothing kills the mood faster than harassment. We are also vetoing falookas.

Do Not Bury Yourself in Chocolate No matter how tempting they are, do not go crazy on the festive treats. You will only make yourself sick and feel down about the waistline you were supposed to be working on.

Do Not Be Afraid to Be Creative

This can make or break the evening. If you need restaurant inspiration, check out our picks on pages This holiday comes around every year; you may at 50, 51 and 52. There are also gift suggestions on some point find yourself in a rut. If your Valentine’s Day looks the same as it has the past five years, pages 10 and 12 maybe it’s time to try something new. 48 Identity February 2016

All other advice aside, at the end of the day you need to pick a place that feels comfortable to you. If you are going to feel self conscious about which fork you are using or where to put your napkin, either research these basics ahead of time or just go somewhere that’s more in your comfort level. You should be able to relax and enjoy the evening.

Do Put Your Phones Away

Breakfast

Yes, it is becoming cliché to remind people that you should put away the mobiles while spending time together, but it is very true. By all means you should actually be with them and not checking Whatsapp messages. This is time to be together as a couple, take advantage of it.

Maybe both of you have jobs that keep you busy in the evenings. Call in a little late and disappear together for an early romantic breakfast instead of dinner. It would be a nice change from the crowded dinner rush.

Do Be Polite to the Waiter

Maybe this year you should be a little adventurous and try something active. Go alone as a couple or with some friends and try Escape or Trapped. It will put a completely new spin on how you see the special day.

Being condescending to the service reflects poorly on your character. If you have a problem with your food or anything, deal with it politely so you don’t put the whole meal on edge.

THE “NETFLIX AND CHILL”

“I have nothing against Valentine’s Day – it doesn’t hinder society. There’s nothing wrong with a day dedicated to the expression of love. I’m not really big into the whole dinner thing. I’d much rather order take out and watch a movie and chill with my girl at home.” – O.S., 29. He would much rather stay in, order some pizza, and cuddle with you just like any other night. He goes by the concept that he doesn’t need a day to remind his woman how much he loves her. There’s no need for grand gestures and fancy dinners on this one day if he already shows her how special she is the rest of the 364 days of the year. So if your man is the chill kind of guy, and you want to celebrate Valentine’s Day properly, try to find a compromise where you maybe stay in but still exchange gifts.

THE CHEESE-BALL

“I actually love getting and giving lovey-dovey gifts. I would much rather get a thoughtful gift or card from my woman that she made herself than some expensive gift.” – S.S., 27.

WHAT MEN REALLY THINK ABOUT V-DAY

by Yasmine Akef

Although the male brain is still considered a foreign subject to most of us, we will cautiously attempt to get into its complexities regarding the international day of romance. Some quick interviews revealed how the male species really feels about Valentine’s Day.

THE PLEASER

“I couldn’t care less about it, I only give it any sort of attention to please my girlfriend. Otherwise, it’s just another day of the week for me.” – R.M., 21. Although this guy might not be into the idea of Valentine’s Day, he is willing to go the extra mile for his significant other. He is also the type that would probably ask his partner or her friends what she would like as a gift instead of trying to be original and 50 Identity February 2016

coming up with his own ideas. Some women might view this as a lack of interest in the relationship, but it’s just his personality. In his view, he is giving her exactly what she wants to make her happy, instead of taking the risk of doing something or buying her a gift that she would despise. On the bright side, he doesn’t expect much back from his partner. So if your man is the pleaser type of guy, you don’t have to scratch your brain too hard on what to do for him. Just sit back and let your man do the work!

Valentine’s Day is his favourite day of the year and he is not ashamed to admit it; his excitement for the big day never withers. Even though he’s generally the romantic type and always likes to go out of his way to spoil his woman throughout the year, on Valentine’s Day he takes things to an entirely different level. He will start thinking and planning weeks or even months ahead. He will bring up what he has planned for the big day everywhere he goes even though he knows his friends are sick of hearing about it. The concept of “less is more” doesn’t really phase him. Flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, heart-shaped balloons, anything that screams love, he WILL find it and he WILL buy it. If you’re also the romantic type like your man, prepare yourself to feel like the only girl in the world. If, however, the idea of romantic cheesiness makes you gag a little bit, make sure to give your man a heads up.

with his relationship status. As soon as he gets into a relationship, he will most likely become the cheeseball type.

THE STRESS FREAK

“I’m the worst at planning things, and the added pressure of having to find a gift that she would like drives me insane.” – Y.B., 31. He is generally the anxious type who is constantly stressing about everything from work and family to insignificant things such as what he’s going to have for lunch or when he’s going to shower. So asking him to plan a whole day AND find the perfect gift is like handing him a shot of anxiety. He doesn’t necessarily dislike Valentine’s Day, just everything that leads up to it. He is never too confident about his ideas (even though they’re probably perfectly fine) and is constantly asking everyone he knows for feedback on what he has planned. When the big day arrives, you would think that with the smile of approval from his significant other, the weight of the world would be lifted off his shoulders but that is not the case. Throughout the whole night and probably for days after (or in some extreme cases, weeks), he will continue to seek approval from his partner on the details of the night. “Are you sure you liked the gift? Would you rather have gone somewhere else? I know I should’ve booked that other place.” If your man is the anxious type, try to give him a few hints on what you would like in order to ease the pressure, and remember he only stresses so much out of love.

THE PLAYER

“Getting laid becomes ten times easier on Valentine’s Day ‘cause single girls are usually feeling extra lonely and just want someone to hold them even if it’s just for the night.”– T.B., 25.

He always comes out to play on Valentine’s Day because he’s aware that many single ladies are usually feeling an overdose of loneliness and would love nothing more than not to spend it alone. It’s really a golden opportunity. Some of us are outright depressed and not afraid to show it, while some put THE HATER “It’s a Hallmark-created holiday to fuel the economy.”- on a brave face and try to act as if it doesn’t phase them. However, we all know that on the inside we’re K.F., 26. all thinking how things would be so much better if we The Valentine’s Day hater comes in two types. The had that special someone in our lives. This type of guy first is one whose hate genuinely stems from a has that all figured out. He will usually use the “I’m criticism of the greeting card and flower industry. single and lonely too, let’s take care of each other” The other only uses that to cover up the fact that he’s card, giving off the impression that he’s after some lonely and bitter like the rest of us. Men are supposed passion and romance. But we all know it’s all just lust to be these strong creatures that can’t portray any which probably expires the next morning. Therefore, kind of emotions (or at least that’s what he was whether you’re the moody or the brave kind of girl, taught growing up), so he feels pressured to hide he will try to figure out a way to get into your pants – how he really feels. Valentine’s Day is not just about couples, or at least it shouldn’t be. It is a celebration of love.

SEEING EVERYONE AROUND YOU IN A SERIOUS The world has told you that you should be with RELATIONSHIP someone for these twenty-four hours. So if you are All of a sudden, no matter which way you turn everyone is in a relationship. If this usually flies under your radar, V-Day will make sure to wake you up to reality like a slap to your face. It’s hard to hide from the truth of your “singleness” on a day that promotes togetherness. That’s when self-doubt will get the better of you.

WHY DOES VALENTINE’S DAY AFFECT SINGLES? by Amina Moustapha

“You are nobody until somebody loves you.” This concealed, inconsiderate, and calloused message has been promoted and boosted by retailers around the globe to the point that you’ve got to be as blind as a bat to not notice it. That makes the insanity of Cupid’s big moment a stressful reality that is impossible for singles to avoid. Though V-Day is arguably a nuisance that brings nothing good for anyone, our society is bizarrely under its thumb. It’s no longer just a day to celebrate love; we took it to a whole other level. What to wear, what gift you should get, where to celebrate, down to what caption to write on each couple’s sappy “look how in love we are” Facebook picture! In all of this obnoxious, red-tinted haze, God help the singles. 52 Identity February 2016

Even if you’re happy and single (yes, those adjectives can go together), who doesn’t give a darn about V-Day, you still can’t help but get affected by what’s happening around you. By the end of the day you may have very well driven yourself insane. If you are not in a relationship or don’t have a date lined up for February 14th, may you have the best of luck! Here are some of the reasons why this day is far from being an easy task to survive for all the singles out there:

SOMETIME WE CAN’T LIVE WITH THE VOID Over the years, V-day has become so lame that some couples don’t even celebrate it anymore. To many, it has turned into a laughing stock and a symbol of consumerism rather than real love. If you’re single, you know all of this but you still can’t help but feel a little bit of a void. It’s easy to laugh it off but it wouldn’t hurt to have someone to laugh it off with.

not, then you are not supposed to be happy, and you should feel unloved.

HAVING TO LISTEN TO THE NON-SINGLE FRIENDS’ VALENTINE STORIES

When girls in relationships start gushing about how they spent Valentine’s Day with their partner, the awesome gifts they were showered with, and all REALIZING RED AND PINK ARE AN AWFUL MIX that overdone romantic jazz, it makes you want to crawl into a hole and die there. With dewy eyes lost Every time you enter a store, you are assaulted with in romance, they will narrate their magical night for Valentine’s Day-themed items, and with each year the millionth time, making it sound like a snippet things get progressively worse. From the big red from a fairy tale. The sad news is you’re obliged to sit teddy bears, to the glittery hearts, to even the red through the performance. Just make sure you don’t roses, it starts to hurt your eyes. On a day like this, roll your eyes, or at least don’t get caught. you are reminded that maybe red on its own looks hot, but definitely not when it’s mixed with pink. Also, why hasn’t the world decided Cupid is creepy?! BEING REMINDED OF ALL THE HEARTBREAKS He’s literally a man dressed as a winged baby in a YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH diaper, following you and your lover around with You can’t help but start thinking back to the previous sharp arrows. That’s just spooky! Valentine’s Days, the ones in which you were actually in a relationship. Everything going on around you will HEARING THE ENDLESS WORDS OF PITY AND make you remember all of the heartbreaks where the ADVICE prince turned out to be a toad, not to mention all the “I wonder why she is single?” “She is so good-looking tears and broken promises you’ve survived. Those and so smart.” “I envy you. I wish I was still single.” recollections won’t go away until they have done These ones hurt but they pale in comparison to the their damage and left you depressed and sinking into other comments you hear from everyone around a tub of chocolate ice cream. you on Valentine’s Day. As for the unwanted pieces of advice, they’re a living hell: “You’re too picky! If you just lowered your standards, you’d be in a relationship.” “Honey, you need to get out there more!” And the most infuriating question of them all: “So, when are you getting married?”

However, Valentine’s Day is not just about couples, or at least it shouldn’t be. It is a celebration of love, and even if you are single there is probably still lots of love in your life. So cheer up and take the focus off of your romantic loneliness and what you don’t FEELING LIKE THE UNIVERSE WANTS YOU TO have, and instead put it on others and what you have FEEL WRETCHED to give. Even if you’re happy and satisfied with how your life is going, someone is bound to bump into you and try to make you feel awful. It’s as if there is a code written somewhere that singles should be miserable on V-Day, or on any other given day for that matter. February 2016 Identity 53

She was quickly flooded with interest. “When everyone read my status, they thought I was joking or I had a good sense of humour about it,” Amira shared. “But at the end I got around seventy people who texted me that they wanted to be a part of it.” Amira had interesting insight into why her friendly service was in such demand in a country like Egypt. She explained why it would be more appealing to modern daters than the traditional system, mostly due to taking the parent factor out of the picture. “Usually it is done in very traditional ways through the parents. That’s why it is very uncomfortable for a lot of girls or guys our age. They’re like ‘no, that’s so traditional, so old school. Why would I want to meet people that way?’ But if you do it through common friends or with more casualty and there’s no pressure of parents involved at first, it becomes a bit less tense for people and they get more comfortable with the idea itself.”

by Liza Dunham

So how does this middle ground between the traditional set ups and making an online dating profile work? Amira said that she doesn’t use an algorithm, but rather uses a gut feeling on who will go well together based on what she knows about them.

D

ating in Egypt is tricky; anyone who wants to find a special someone to be with can find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place. In other terms, stuck between letting their parents set them up or facing the vast unknown world of online dating. This challenge for the modern single Egyptian to meet potential partners has motivated some to take action and start playing the match makers themselves. Amira Azzouz, founder and editor in chief of lifestyle magazine Fustany, realised she had a lot of friends who deserved to meet someone compatible and wanted to help them out in an organised way. She knew how hard it can be to meet decent people, so she simply made a Facebook status offering her help. It read: 58 Identity February 2016

Dear Esteemed Friends and Colleagues, I have decided to start another activity on the side, which is extending my matchmaking skills for all the awesome people out there I know. Why? 1. Because you’ve probably heard me saying at least once “ana 3ayza azbat kaza ma3 kaza.” 2. Awful people are surfacing more and more, and it’s time to connect the good ones to one another. 3. And finally, because I know how hard it is for single people to find someone decent. Next steps are as follows: message me if you’re interested to be part of that or you’ve been trying to set up a friend of yours with no luck, and I’ll handle everything with high secrecy (I could even sign an NDA, but I think I am trustworthy). And YES, I know I’m crazy, wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s more of a hunch feeling, that I have a feeling this person has these characteristics and is looking for this or that. Or maybe this guy is coming from a bad break up so he needs someone who will be understanding. It’s like an instinct. It’s about knowing people properly and if there’s potential for them to click together because they share the same interests. Does that person have certain qualities that would highlight the positives in the other person? The way I do it is I introduce the people to one another and then I get out of it completely to avoid any kind of drama that will come my way. Because I’m doing it just to help out people, not to cause myself any unnecessary drama.” Amira isn’t the only one making an organised effort into bringing potential couples together. Since her Facebook post, Amira has been approached by others who are doing the same. Asmaa Samir, only in her early twenties, works as a dentist and knows many of her coworkers don’t have much time to meet new people, so she’s there to help bridge the gap. “We all are so wrapped up in our cocoons that we all seriously need a little push. Whether in Egypt or worldwide, some people need this sort of motivation to put themselves out there,” explained Asmaa.

Sometimes it’s so effortless to match someone when there is hidden chemistry.

MODERN EGYPTIAN MATCH MAKING

Asmaa also doesn’t use an algorithm while match making her friends and coworkers, but rather approaches it case by case. She realises it’s a delicate situation that needs to be approached in the right way for each person and to not scare them off. “The more casual it is, the more flexible they are to the options. Sometimes it’s so effortless to match someone when there is ‘hidden chemistry.’ Just making silly jokes can start something up,” Asmaa explained. Whatever their strategy is, it has already started to work. One of the couples Asmaa set up is even preparing to make a big announcement about their relationship. The question remains if this middle ground in the dating world, where friends and acquaintances connect each other like an informal dating service, is here to stay or will fade out as online dating grows. Despite Egypt being one of the leading internet users in the world, there are still mixed opinions about whether or not it is viable in a culture where even dating isn’t always blessed. Even the two matchmakers had very different opinions. Asmaa was adamant that Egypt isn’t ready for serious online dating yet. She even experimented herself with an account to see what would happen, and was spammed with sex related texts. She thinks it will take more time before online dating can be more than a booty call. Amira had the opposite opinion. She realises that many Egyptians are not comfortable with online dating, but as it becomes more and more popular she is seeing it work. Whether or not online dating becomes more appealing with time to Egyptians, it looks like friendly organised matchmaking could be here to stay and is even growing. Both Amira and Asmaa want to continue their efforts and said others have contacted them to collaborate. “I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to help two hearts flutter. Just giving that heads up for two people to realise they could make a great couple and then they do, is tremendous satisfaction,” concluded Asmaa. February 2016 Identity 59

The k a Up e r B Guide

KEEP YOURSELF BUSY Yes, the first couple of days can be horrendous. It will seem like the only safe place is your bed, but you can’t stay in it forever. You need to get yourself up and try and keep yourself busy. Focus on your work, go to the gym or catch up with some old friends. Engage in any activity that makes you happy and distracts you from your own thoughts. With time you’re not going to want to stay in bed anymore and pout over your ex. You’ll be up and running. You just need to take some initiative.

by Yasmine Akef

There are always two sides to every break-up – the dumper and the dumpee. Obviously every relationship is different and there’s no specific set of rules when it comes to matters of the heart. However, it is only common courtesy that the dumper follows certain guidelines when breaking up so as not to add to the pain that they are bound to inflict on their significant other. As for the dumpee, even though we don’t consider ourselves to be experts, through past experience we offer some recommendations on how to deal with a broken heart and recover faster. This guide provides general advice for both sides on how to deal with break ups.

THE DUMPER BE SURE OF YOUR DECISION Put a lot of thought into making this decision and be 300% sure before you break up with them. You are dealing with someone’s heart after all. The worst thing is to have your heart repeatedly broken by the same person because they keep changing their mind about you. They deserve someone who’s sure they want to be with them at all costs. DON’T STALL If you’re sure you want to end things, don’t keep postponing it because you’re scared or worried about how they’ll react. And at all costs, please don’t keep faking that you’re happy in your relationship when you’re genuinely miserable and bound to break up with your partner. They deserve better than that, and so do you, so stop wasting their time and yours. Let them go and give them the chance to find someone else if you don’t want to be with them. They deserve happiness just as much as you do.

60 Identity February 2016

DON’T DO IT THROUGH TEXT OR SOCIAL MEDIA We know it can be tempting to break up through text since this way you wouldn’t have to deal with arguments or drama or tears, but it’s just plain disrespectful. Changing your relationship status on Facebook or writing a status is also not the way to go. This is someone who was there for you through thick and thin, the least they deserve is a face-to-face break up. You need to be an adult about this. Think of how you would want someone to break up with you and try to do the same thing. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME Don’t, at all costs, break up with them on their birthday, Valentine’s Day, their graduation day, after a relative’s death, or any other such occasion. If you know they are going through a tough time and are not in the best of moods, don’t add to their existing pain. Or if you know they are in a greater mood than usual, don’t take away their happiness so abruptly. We know sometimes it can be a bit hard but hold out for the right time when they are in a better state of mind. You don’t want to come out as the bad guy, so wait for the right moment. TELL THEM THE TRUTH They deserve to know the true reason you are choosing to end things with them, especially if they are not expecting it. Yes, it would be much easier to lie and go for the clichés like “you are too good for me” or “it’s not you, it’s me,” but it’s not fair. They will lose sleep at night wondering where they went wrong, and if they could have done something differently. You can sugarcoat it a bit but be brutally honest. Yes, it will sting a lot more in the short run but it’s better than leaving them hanging. Whether it’s because you no longer have feelings for them, or it’s because you found someone else, tell them the truth.

THE DUMPEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO JUSTIFY YOUR FEELINGS You don’t always have to have it together or feel a certain way. It’s okay to be upset and cry, it’s okay to be angry, and it’s also okay to be perfectly fine. Whatever you’re feeling, it is justifiable. Getting dumped is hard and getting emotional shouldn’t be shameful. Everyone gets their heart broken at some point in life and they eventually move on and end up in better healthier relationship. You won’t be any different CHANNEL YOUR FEELINGS You know all these inner thoughts you’re battling in your head, why don’t you channel them into something else? It could be writing, painting, singing, or even dancing. Not only will this help you release everything going on inside of you, you also never know what might come out of it. Adele wrote her first album after a break-up and look where that got her!

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE Initially it might seem like heartbreak is the end of the world, but you have to believe us when we say it is not. Try and focus on the positive in your life whatever area it is in. It could be that you have an amazing support system in your life whether it’s your family or your friends, or that you have a successful career, or that you’re starting a new chapter in your life. Whatever it is, no one can take that away from you so take pride in it. Also, try and learn from the experience; all heartbreaks are lessons. You probably learned more about yourself and what you want in a partner so that next time you’ll choose someone who suits you better. TALK TO SOMEONE If you feel like you’re really down, to the point that you can’t sleep or eat, you’re always crying, and you can’t get yourself out of this hole, then definitely speak to someone. This can be a parent or a friend or even a counselor. Go to someone that you trust and you know will be there for you. Keeping all your thoughts and feelings bottled up can be really dangerous. You need to let it all out and lay all your cards on the table. It will make you feel ten times better.

Why, in your opinion, is it important for us to feel beautiful? Plastic surgery touches people’s lives the most. People used to perceive it as an unnecessary privilege; however, it has a direct effect on individual’s relationships with self and with others. Those others might include husbands, fiancés, wives, neighbors and colleagues; if people are satisfied with their appearance they will be satisfied with everything they do in life including their relationships. If you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, you would not be able to work correctly, your entire psychological state will be affected and you would not be able to be as productive as you could be.

We have strict criteria for our equipments, we do not import anything that cannot deliver accurate expectations or can lead to multiple side effects. We are also focused on constantly updating our knowledge by reading more and attending all of the international conferences. In Shape’s team consists of 30 doctors, they travel everywhere to attend conferences and training sessions to learn more and be exposed to international techniques and trends. Also our high flow of patients enriched our experience as we have seen a lot and dealt with a lot of different cases.

I chose this path to change people from within themselves. People think that plastic surgeries change them from the outside; on contrary, it gives them inner satisfaction and happiness that extends and reaches others.

Why do you think there is such a stigma against plastic surgery, and do you think your clinic has been successful in fighting that stigma? Local awareness is only 10% of the needed.
