Think back...our industry has migrated from the 1980’s where we used faxes for invoicing, proofs, etc. We marketed via an expensive mix of trade shows ($5,000) for a fully burdened 10x10 booth along big expenses with Sage, ESP, and dozens of other industry marketing tools. When Sage & ESP started selling clicks, they made a fortune. There are a hundred types of marketing tools Suppliers used...based on what they could afford. Most of the industry even stopped printing catalogs because its MORE EFFICIENT for Distributors to have them as a PDF. There’s never been a time in the promotional products industry’s history when one marketing tool/channel has so overwhelmingly stood out as the best way to reach your Distributors with your products and have two-way communication than there is now with email campaigns. ESP had it day, but it too is losing to email marketing. Between ESP & Sage there are only 10,000 Distributors using those services.

JPG is better than PNG. Using the “best” quality images (PNG) will slow down email load time.

#2 KEEP IT CLEAN Images - Keep your images to a maximum of 20% of the email in terms of space. Spammers use images to hide their content from ESPs. Today, ESPs think that you have something to hide if your email is text heavy and will flag it as spam.

Length - Limit your emails to 6 paragraphs and make sure they are a minimum of 2. If you need to deliver more content than that, insert a “read more” hyperlink bringing them to the full content on your blog or social media page.

Buzzwords - See list at the end. These are words that are used so often by marketers, that ESPs have flagged them as marketing emails. The more you use, the more your SPAM score goes up. And if you think you’re clever in purposely misspelling a word, or being creative with it, the negative effect will double.

#3 SILENT KILLERS Affiliate Swipe Copy - If you are using the same copy and directing people to the same page as other affiliate partners, ESPs will associate you with them. If one of those partners has a particularly high SPAM score or abuses their list, then your email deliverability will be directly affected.

Rewrite any and all affiliate copy to increase your deliverability and separate yourself from toxic mailers.

Raw URLs - Just don’t do it. Using Raw URL links will jack up your spam score. Instead, you can hyperlink your text to safeguard your deliverability. Also, avoid placing a link more than 3 times in an email to keep your SPAM score down.

Don’t use redirect links in emails - ESPs will think that you are hiding something bad, and will keep you out of the inbox.

Don’t use link shortening software (e.g. bit.ly) Spammers initially used these to bypass SPAM safeguards, but now it’s caught up with them.

Bounced Emails - Hard bounces (when an email is no longer valid) and soft bounces (when an inbox is full) can drag down your deliverability if you continually send to the same email addresses that come back as bounces.

Unsubscribe them if your CRM doesn’t automatically do it for you. We recommend Ontraport, which does it automatically.

We help you with bounced emails that Constant Contact and other services like Mailchimp don’t help you with. In most cases this is where those services DON’T catch and remove those emails.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES One Call to Action in your emails will always be the ones with the highest response rate. Don’t ask users to do too many things in one email, it’s most likely that they will do nothing at all.

Drive traffic to your website from emails. The more referring traffic you receive the better it is for SEO.

On your welcome email, let users know how they can whitelist your email.

Don’t purchase email lists and stay away from letting other people opt-in their friends for marketing emails.
