2020 The Year of the Ma Nobody would have thought this time last year that we’d be facing this pandemic. Oh people like Bill Gates warned us from data he saw in 2015, but just the same we all had our heads in the sand and thought it would never happen.

Now let’s fast forward from the time the pandemic was announced to today and it’s and its fulley evident that we will for a long time be wearing masks to try an prevent Covid-19 from spreading to every man woman and child in the country.

We think there’s an upside to this catastrophe and that is we can give out masks like crazy with your logos on them and make a big difference in how America heals.

Yes, the promotional products industry can save lives...lots of them. And why not?

Logoing masks serves and protects your community. The cooler and more protective they are, the more your brand will get the ad impressions. And high on your list should be how easy they are to breathe while being worn. A cool looking mask that hard to breathe is not helping get rid of the virus. Most importantly its got to block the droplets containing the virus.

We really don’t see this getting to a point where we DON’T have to wear masks and all of the studies we’ve seen and read about how the virus has spread through our country basically provides the same solution. Protection is required...and the face mask is an adequate weapon.

Most everyone has seen the images of Chinese citizens with masks many moons before the pandemic broke out. The Chinese--and other countries--have been wearing masks for years. Our editorial staff reported seeing a young Chinese woman on a scooter. Both her and her baby had masks on and this was in 1989.

Medically, the mask will be the most important tool to fight Covid-19 in 2020 and beyond. Think about how really important it is...and how relatively inexpepensive it is. And there’s no better billboard than a person’s face; it even beats t-shirts in terms of always being seen on your endorser...your client.

We all understand there are different studies with different results but doctors have been wearing masks for as long as we can remember.

In general natural fibers are better than synthetic ones. Synthetic yarn is smooth and allows the virus to slide by whereas fabrics like cotton have lots of fuzzy edges that grab the virus. Then there are masks with inserts, washable masks, bandanas, and about 100 potential styles for masks.

We keep restating, make sure your mask allows the wearer to breathe easy but trap the virus. That’s the combo you want in any mask you buy.

Techniques for printing on masks.

There are many techniques for logoing masks. The most common is silk screening, a technique that’s been around for a long time. Its durable and will make a beautiful long lasting impression.

After that there’s DTG--direct to garment--and sublimation.

DTG and sublimation are for super high quaity photo looking imprints. They are generally more expensive than screen printing but less than embroidery.

Embroidery is the high end and will be great for masks that can be washed many times.

Remember, ANY logo you put on the mask

will effect its breathability. Check to make sure your final product is one that your customers will love.

GETTING REAL TECHNICAL

If you want to know if the fabric you’ve selected meets muster, then get real technical when you are ordering. You should know whether or not they will succeed in blocking the virus.

Our source tested hundreds of fabrics for their ability to filter large-sized one micron viruses which is similar to the Ebola virus.

They also indentified small sized--0.3 mircrons which is like small pox.

For reference the Covid-19 virus measures 0.06-0.14 which is very small, but the good news its 5-10 microns in size when in droplets.

Their study determined how fabrics trapped particles PLUS for their breathe-ability factors.

Breathe-ability is super important. Why buy a mask that people won’t wear because it restricts breathing and doesn’t filter out most of the droplets?

Social distancing will become a new norm and the role of the Promotional Products Buyer will change. What will that role be like?

Right now the role of the Promotional Products Buyer may now seem fuzzy.

However, that’s quite the opposite as this is a great opportunity to pick up on consumer behaviors so you can engage them in new ways.

These changing times dictate that to survive the negative sentiment and economic slowdown you should consider using promotional products to emulate resilience, innovation, agility and empathy. For example, running nurse “Thank you” programs with teddy bears. They need all the emotional support they can get right now.

You can think small or big if your budget allows.

We envision as well that sending individual gifts to your consumers at home will become a defacto standard. That means your promotional programs in the future will require you sending promotional products to your client’s home. In our industry usually there are split shipment charges, a minimal addition in most cases to the cost of the order.

We also know that people will be spending more time at home...and on their mobile devices as a result of Covid-19. You can connect with your client’s through no/low cost social media programs where they will get your branded items. Then in some cases your promotional products will be sent to the client’s dwelling/office. This will become more mainstream. The Promo Industry Adapts and C It hit the promotional products world as hard as it hit any USA industry. Everything came shreiking to a halt in late February/ early March 2020. A $20 plus BILLION industry shut down.

But the promo industry responded with a commitment to its country. Unlike many industries that had to be mandated to change their manufacturing to make protective devices for citizens, the promotional products world jumped into action to help.

Here’s some success stories.

SanMar, Hanes, and Fruit of the Loom instantly redirected their production to make millions of face masks. Gildan and Delta Apparel also are making masks. Even hard goods companies switched their production to make items to fight against Covid-19.

Companies like Snugz that had sold hand sanitizers with logos on them for years was buried in orders.

The need for PPE has kept the lights on for many and actually increased sales at many promo companies. Imagine this...promo companies that were producing tyvek wrist bands for trade shows began producing full PPE type garments.

There were also quite a few promo manufacturers making medical kits that included thermometers. Most sold out in the weeks following the lock down.

Many Suppliers started offering items they had in stock without logos just to help the American people.
