“The Idea Village’s efforts are identifying and supporting a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurial leaders who are committed to the city of New Orleans’ future.” - David Darragh, Chairman of The Idea Village Board of Directors

\\ LETTER FROM THE CEO In 2000, I approached philanthropist Susan Gundlach with the crazy idea that New Orleans would be a vibrant entrepreneurial hub. She offered her support if our efforts would create opportunities to entice the 42,000 young people who left New Orleans in the 1990’s to return home one day. With that, the Jones Family Foundation seeded the local entrepreneurial movement. Susan understood the essence of why The Idea Village exists: to create a community where our kids would want to stay and get involved. Fifteen years later, I am proud to report that New Orleans has been named the #1 Brain Magnet in the Country, #3 Best City for Tech Jobs, and #1 City for In-Migration by Forbes. New Orleanians are coming home – joined by a legion of new residents drawn to our unique city. One reason is the engaged community focused on supporting entrepreneurial talent with innovative ideas in technology, education, water, food, and art. The results are the creation of thousands of quality jobs, a growing investment network, and New Orleans being globally recognized as a leading city to start a business. Entrepreneurial leaders have emerged that are paying it forward by mentoring new startups and engaging in critical civic issues, including Kirk Coco, NOLA Brewing Company; Patrick Comer, Federated Sample; Craig Cordes, Cordina; Joel Dondis, Sucré; Brendan Finke, ChapterSpot; Chris Laibe, StaffInsight; Sal LaMartina, Cordina; Kristen McEntyre, Tutti Dynamics; Jen Medbery, Kickboard; Kenneth Purcell, iSeatz; Brent McCrossen, Audiosocket; Joe McMenemon, ChapterSpot; Robbie Vitrano, Naked Pizza; Matt Wisdom, TurboSquid; and Scott Wolfe, zlien. The cycle has begun. During New Orleans Entrepreneur Week last March, I moderated a conversation between Walter Isaacson, Jim Coulter, and Ben Rosen about the future of New Orleans. Each acknowledged our significant progress, but cautioned that we still have work to do in order to sustain the momentum. As a result, we have launched a 3-year plan with a vision for New Orleans in 2018, the city’s tri-centennial. Our efforts will result in an inclusive, self-sustaining entrepreneurial ecosystem where everyone has a role. We envision that New Orleans Entrepreneur Week will be part of the city’s annual rhythms and rituals just like Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and Saints games. New Orleans will be a model city for connecting around entrepreneurship. Which brings me to another crazy idea: What if we hosted a reunion for all ex-pats, their families, and friends of New Orleans in 2018? Imagine in March of 2018, 100,000+ of our sons and daughters back home to witness firsthand the entrepreneurial transformation. Imagine tents in Jackson Square filled with the “who’s who” and the “who’s next,” dedicated to stewarding the future of our city. My goal is to inspire my daughter, Katie Blair, to always make New Orleans home. Join the journey,

Tim Williamson
