WHO WE ARE & WHAT WE DO IDEA is Northeastern University’s student-led venture accelerator that supports entrepreneurs in the Northeastern community. The operations are led by undergraduates from varying educational backgrounds and support venture development from concept to launch. WE NEVER TAKE ANY EQUITY We pride ourselves on being a free resource for our community to have access to when they need support. WE ARE INDUSTRY AGNOSTIC IDEA founders tackle big problems in every industry, from software to food, consumer products to high tech; We support it all. WE ARE NOT JUST FOR STUDENTS We support all Northeastern founders, including undergraduates, grad students, alumni, + professors. WE EMBRACE FAILURE Our program supports the testing and iterating that’s necessary for an early-stage concept to develop. Starting again with a different idea is always encouraged

5

MISSION STATEMENT

IDEA fosters the development of entrepreneurs in the Northeastern community through the educational experience of developing a business from concept to launch. We provide a holistic experience for entrepreneurs to receive resources, support and engagement opportunities in an experiential learning environment.

6

WHY IDEA IS UNIQUE IDEA is a fully student-run organization. Our unique stage-gate process provides a framework that can be applied to any venture across all industries. IDEA believes in the idea of failing fast and using what is learned from that process to build better businesses. With the help of our various other resources like one-on-one coaching, the IDEA Gap Fund, and more, we help ventures develop, grow and set them up with the opportunity to thrive once they leave our program.

LETTER FROM THE CEO 10 Years ago, in a small conference room a group of students and faculty embarked on creating a platform to unlock the innovative potential of this 200-year-old university. Since then year after year, IDEA has transformed from working with only a handful of founders to now having a global portfolio of over 1700 concepts activated. Founders working in all industries from deep-tech to lifestyle businesses that are looking to provide solutions to pain points across the globe. This success of this organization has not been accomplished by one team but by this 10-year-old community of 1000 that has had a hand in building it. They set us up for success and provided the tools needed for the next generation to continue IDEA’s mission. Over my 3 years involved with IDEA I have had the honor to work closely with the incredible entrepreneurship community of Northeastern that includes talented students, founders, experienced mentors, industry leaders, and distinguished alumni all working together to support IDEA’s mission -- To pioneer experiential entrepreneurship through educating future entrepreneurs and launch impactful ventures. It is a community like no other where its strength lies in the people and the belief that those that are curious or are looking to make an impact in the world through entrepreneurship should get the best fighting chance to do so regardless of their background. The 10 Year Anniversary was the perfect milestone to celebrate the commitment to the mission over the years and the set up for the next 10. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this team during such a pivotal time. Our goals as a team this year was to set up IDEA to scale for the next 10. As we enter a new decade, we are also entering a time where the world needs entrepreneurs to solve problems that matter. As a team we embarked on initiatives to build a foundation for IDEA to grow from, working on digital transformations to be technology-driven in entrepreneurial support, strengthening our community and resources through the ecosystem, and pushing to be a leader in bringing more to the table. Although this year aimed to be a celebration, we had to shift our focus to be agile and resilient in our offerings and community. It is clear to all of us that 2020 has been a challenging and pivotal time for the world. The world needs game-changers, leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs in the new decade to solve key obstacles we face and provide solutions to better the lives of all. IDEA’s vision to strive to support a global network of successful entrepreneurs and exemplary student leaders from Northeastern empowered by innovative skills and an entrepreneurial mindset will continue to push the boundaries in how we achieve that. It is at the core of what we do and why we do it. I ask you to join us in the coming years with whatever time, resource, knowledge or curiosity you have to give back. The is still much work to be done! And I guarantee that in the next 10 years we will be proud of what our network has accomplished. Five years ago when I first heard about IDEA I was looking for the next chapter of my life. I was hungry to change the world and I knew that entrepreneurs were the game-changers that were doing so. At the time IDEA was the place that brought those who were looking to innovate and hungry to learn together. Little did I know its impact brought much more. I want to personally say thank you to my 10-year team, the students-leaders, faculty, staff, and alumni that have pushed us to unprecedented progress. You have given me an unforgettable experience, a family and I look forward to seeing IDEA teams, founders and the northeastern community reach new milestones in the future. Here is to the next 10! Thank you, Abhishek Balakrishnan Altschuler-Meyer CEO

10 YEARS AGO, IT STARTED WITH AN IDEA Started in 2009 by six undergraduate seniors from the D’Amore-McKim School of Business, they came to Dean Thomas E. Moore wanting to create a program to aid startups within the university. They believed that regardless of their academic discipline, students and alumni possessed great ideas but were unable to turn these ideas into ventures because of various real world obstacles.

DATA ANALYTICS PROCESS Evaluating impact is a tricky task. Hard metrics about funding and launched ventures are exciting, but hardly provide a holistic measure of our impact. Our mission is to foster entrepreneurial learning. Most ventures fail as they go through the program, but that is the purpose. Entrepreneurs learn through failures at IDEA. To measure the effectiveness and impact of education, evaluation, and feedback from entrepreneurs are critical. TRACE evaluations at Northeastern is a good example. Collecting adequate survey responses are challenging, which is why we have strategically implemented new processes. We have integrated feedback collection at each checkpoint as entrepreneurs move through our stages. Streamlining feedback collection allows us to collect more qualitative and quantitative data in real-time. As we accumulate more data, we can start to discover more insights and better evaluate IDEA’s efficacy and impact. The new data pipeline and automation also increase our operational efficiencies and will support IDEA as we scale.

A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR DONORS

49

To our generous donors—thank you. None of this would be possible without you. Not today, not ten years ago, and not as we look forward to the decades of impact ahead. An idea needs time and space to grow. As it begins to flourish, it demands support and encouragement. To succeed, the creative entrepreneurs who spend limitless hours cultivating their ideas need dedicated partners who believe in their work—and who will support them every step of the way. As an invaluable donor and partner, you recognized this need and appreciated the potential of IDEA, and you’ve ensured our entrepreneurs can do their best work. Because of your vision and generosity, IDEA is a core element of experiential education at D’Amore-McKim and across the Northeastern community. Your loyalty and commitment build the sustaining environment so crucial to entrepreneurial thinking—letting our students fail spectacularly, recover quickly, pivot when necessary, and learn from every stage of their experience. On behalf of all of us at IDEA, thank you for all you have done. Our current and future successes are also yours, and together we will continue to foster the entrepreneurial thinking that transforms lives and makes our world a better place. Thank you for your generosity.
