Much of the areas charm lies in its unspoilt identity, with many towns retaining plenty of old-world character.

Those who take the Algarve’s path less travelled and head east away from Faro airport, find themselves richly rewarded. Stretching from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António, life marches (or, rather, pleasantly ambles) to a different beat in the Eastern Algarve and - in contrast to the hustle and bustle to be found elsewhere - traditional towns and villages offer a more tranquil take on Portuguese living. With an enchanting blend of historic culture, scenic views and breathtaking beaches, this sleepy corner of the country found nestled up against the Spanish border, is emerging as a rising star in the property market. Much of the area’s charm lies in its unspoilt identity, with many towns retaining plenty of old-world character thanks to more

rigorous building restrictions than elsewhere on the Algarve. From the cobbled streets and orange-tree-edged squares of towns such as Moncarapacho, Vila Real and Tavira (undoubtedly one of the Algarve’s prettiest towns, traditional white washed buildings, distinctive rooftops and decorative azulejo facades) to the former fishing villages of Cabanas and Santa Luzia (where octopus is a local speciality), those looking for a more laidback way of life will find themselves spoilt for choice. That same hassle-free spirit also extends to the city and iconic islands of Faro and Tavira. It may be a city and the Algarve’s capital but, in true Algarvian style, it retains an easy-going air. That said, there’s more than enough to satisfy culture vultures within the

city’s historic walled centre, from museums and historic buildings to the regenerated neighbourhoods of Mouraria and Vila Adentro, the Moorish-influenced old town. Despite its relaxed nature, there’s still plenty in the way of amenities along the Eastern Algarve. Banks, medical centres and supermarkets are easy to come by, with the latter complemented by regular farmers’ markets where you can fill your shopping basket with local fruit and veg, along with other items including eggs, flowers, honey and Portugal’s iconic piri piri. The East’s distinctive culture is matched by a rich history, and two important sites lie in and around the small town of Estoi, just north east of Faro in the foothills of the Serra do

Caldeirão. The first of these is the the lovely historic Palacio de Estoi, a restored palace and one of the Algarve’s finest examples of 19th century Late Baroque architecture, where tourists and locals alike flock to discover its stunning gardens, take 5 o’clock tea in the grand salon, or dine on the picturesque terrace. There’s also the nearby Roman villa of Milreu, where some of the country’s best preserved ruins dating back to 1AD hint at the area’s long and varied past.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year it would be a sin to stay indoors all day in the Algarve, especially for those who enjoy their outdoor activities. The Eastern Algarve has much to offer beyond sitting in a shady spot with a cool drink, although there are plenty of local bars ready to cater to you if you’d prefer.

Meanwhile, the inland location of São Brás de Alportel acts as a doorway to exploring the Eastern Algrave’s countryside, with a wealth of walking trails catering to all abilities, with everything from casual strolls to heart-rateraising hikes.

haute cuisine restaurants. The Algarve boasts six Michelin-starred restaurants, all of which are found in this area. Of these six, two have gone one better and achieved twostar status: Ocean in Armação de Pêra, led by Austrian Executive Chef Hans Neuner, and boutique resort Vila Joya’s restaurant in Albufeira, where Chef Dieter Koschina combines local produce with northern European cooking techniques. Elsewhere you’ll find all manner of international flavours in the area’s other exclusive restaurants, from brunch spots and steakhouses to sushi and champagne bars. Sun worshippers will find themselves spoiled for choice too. The central region boasts the Algarve’s highest concentration of beaches bestowed with a Blue Flag Award (43 in total), an international mark of quality recognising

the finest beaches in the world. From long, cliff-lined beaches that bustle with activity during the summer months to more secluded coves, the only difficulty is choosing which stretch of sand to spend the day on. If making the most of precious family time is top of your Algarve checklist, then you’ll be well served by vibrant towns such as Albufeira. Located further west from the Golden Triangle, the city’s old town is a particularly family-friendly area. It has a picturesque central square featuring a variety of welcoming bars, cafes and restaurants, that serve everything from Italian and Chinese to good old English fish & chips. As well as traditional Portuguese dishes such as piri piri chicken and fresh fish. The city is also served by two beautiful, lifeguard-manned beaches whilst the marina - lined with fun, candycoloured buildings that delight old and young alike - is the starting point for boat trips and diving excursions.

There’s plenty more in the way of activities for a fun family day out too. Indoor karting centre Hot Wheels Raceway can be found in the underground carpark of Albufeira’s marina, whilst the Family Golf Park, the annual FIESA sand sculpture festival at Pêra, and the Algarve’s four waterparks - Slide & Splash, Zoomarine, Aqualand and Aquashow - are all no more than a half hour drive away. Further west still, a quieter way of life lies waiting in the sleepy former fishing towns of Carvoeiro and Ferragudo. Or, for a culture fix head inland to the historic town of Silves which sits in the shadow of its impressively maintained castle, where an annual medieval festival transports the town back to its Moorish origins as the Algarve’s former capital. Wherever you find yourself on the Central Algarve, one thing’s for sure: you’re guaranteed to enjoy the best that life - and this beautiful area - has to offer.
