WHAT IS IP RATING?
An IP rating is shorthand for an Ingress Protection mark, sometimes referred to synonymously as an International (or Internal) Protection mark. An IP rating is usually a two-digit grading system that’s applied to the enclosure of a mechanical or electrical item, giving customers a clear indication of the item’s resistance to various types of unwanted intrusion.

The IK rating of a fixture indicates the level of impact protection the fixture has. This is a two digit rating after the letters ‘IK’ that identifies the degree of protection against harsh impacts to the body of a fixture. The higher the number equates to a higher level of protection.
The reason for having a universal IP rating system is so that buyers and users can be confident of how safe it is to use certain electrical or mechanical goods in specific environments and applications. Unlike more vague marketing terms such as ‘waterproof’ - which don’t necessarily give a clear definition of precisely where and to what extent an item can resist moisture ingress - an IP rating is designed to provide a far more specific account.

BATHROOM ZONES
Zone 0: Is the area inside the bath or shower basin. A minimum rating of IPX7 is required (protection against immersion in water) and only SELV (max 12v AC) equipment may be used in this zone.
Zone 1: Is the area directly above Zone 0 to a height of 2.25m above finished floor level or the top of the highest fixed water outlet, whichever is higher. A minimum of IPX4 is needed in this zone. If there is a possibility of water jets then IPX5 is required. 17th edition IEC regulations allow for the use of certain 240v electrical equipment in zones 1 and 2 if controlled by the appropriate RCD.

COLOUR TEMPERATURE (CCT
Colour temperature is a measure of a light’s colour. CCT tells us the color of the light emitted by a light source and is immediately visible to the observer by looking directly at the light source.
LED colour temperature is measured in ‘Kelvin’ (K)
The warmer the colour, appears the lower the colour temperature.
The cooler it appears, the higher the colour temperature.
Lumen Output (lm) is a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a light source.

The CRI value of a light source describes how accurately a light source illuminates colors of an object. It tells us about the color appearance of objects under the light source (the light source “renders” the colors of an object)

Near the airport on the outskirts of Taupo sits The Landing, a major development and tourist attraction that takes family fun to a whole new level.
Alongside cafés, restaurants, conference rooms and traveller services, you’ll find almost every indoor entertainment option you can think of – ten-pin bowling, a trampoline park, an arcade, a ninja obstacle course, and virtual reality games (to name a few). Then there are future seasonal attractions like ice skating, and a dodgem ride. It’s a kids’ (and big kids’) dream playground.
Like all major construction projects, a lot of meticulous work has gone on behind the scenes. Local developer Jamie Keehan has used local professional services wherever possible, including lighting design, supply and installation.
COMPLEX DESIGN REQUIRES VARIED SKILLSET
Right from the start, this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill lighting project. Each part of The Landing came with its own requirements and complexities. At the same time, all the design elements needed to work together. Jamie called several local suppliers, “and the best response I got came from the team at Ideal Electrical,” he says.
Not only were they enthusiastic about taking on the project, but they also had the in-house capability to manage the interior and exterior design and specify the products. For Jamie, this was a big cost-saver. “They were able to specify and give me producer statements for the design, which I felt not only saved me money but also gave me confidence they had the product knowledge too.”
THE FULL LIGHTING SUITE: DESIGN, SUPPLY, INSTALLATION
Partnering with local electrician, Off-Grid Electrical Jamie says one of the biggest drawcards to working with Ideal Electrical was the fact they’re “a one-stop-shop”. That relationship would extend even further when Ideal Electrical project manager Steve Powrie connected with a local electrician to discuss installation.
Sean McCollough from Off-Grid Electrical says he was initially approached by Steve to work with Ideal to provide a solar solution. This opportunity extended to HVAC and a complete lighting solution ensuring Sean was the main electrical contractor on site. He says he jumped at the chance to work on such “an iconic project in Taupo.”
SOLAR SAVES MEGA ON POWER CONSUMPTION
The cherry on top for Jamie was when Steve suggested incorporating solar power into the design. With a big air conditioning unit on site as well as arcade games and lots of televisions, The Landing’s daily power consumption is heavy. Ideal Electrical’s solar expert Dave Petrie came up with a design based on projected kilowatt usage, then worked closely with Sean to make sure the design factored in the building’s correct loadings.
Jamie now uses an app on his phone to monitor The Landing’s power consumption – which came in handy over
the latest lockdown. “We realised that the arcade games, which are automatically set to turn on in the morning, hadn’t been shut down. I was able to quickly log in to the app and turn them off, so they weren’t left wasting power all lockdown,”
Jamie explains.
SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP CRITICAL TO DEVELOPMENT SUCCESS
Like all construction projects, especially at this scale, The Landing Taupo hasn’t been without its challenges. Even the smallest design change or equipment hiccup can cause issues that need resolving, not to mention the curveball that is COVID delaying product shipments.
Jamie says both teams have taken everything in their stride, moving swiftly to find cost-effective solutions that will keep any disruption to a minimum. “I can’t fault Ideal’s level of service. It wasn’t just about signing the deal, then walking away. They followed through and were always on hand to help when it was needed,” he adds.
Sean has signed a contract with The Landing to complete the solar, HVAC, power and lighting, data, networking and controls installations. At the time, it was the biggest project his team had ever taken on. It’s come with some big learning curves, but “standing back and watching the kids running around happily has been the biggest moment of joy for me,” Sean says.
“Ideal has been super supportive and readily available to help at all times. Our relationship has really grown through this project and we look forward to working with them on our upcoming projects,” he says.
A STRATEGIC BALANCE: BLENDING IN FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT
Our lighting team was approached by ITM to be part of its head o ice redesign. The ITM business had grown significantly over the years and wanted to create a more relevant, modern and open workplace that was more conducive to collaboration. It was also imperative the design didn’t stray too far from the brand’s grassroots of timber yards and muddy gumboots.
THE BRIEF
A sleek, minimalist lighting design would accentuate the semi-industrial look of the building. It needed to be refined, not detract from the strong interior design features and provide su icient working light. A low energy footprint solution was also required and therefore quality fittings were paramount.
THE CHALLENGES
This project posed several challenges for the team: AGE OF BUILDING.
There were a lot of high ceilings, beams, cable trays and pre-set electrical connections to consider when designing.
BUDGET RESTRICTIONS.
Our lighting team was tasked with working to a set budget, as most of the interior had already been designed.
DESIGN COMPLEXITY.
We were challenged to come up with a better design solution that had form and function, and aesthetically contributed and improved the overall design.
THE LIGHTING APPROACH
A lighting design concept that ticked all the boxes Lighting designer Abhishek Dipak explains how the team worked the project:
“This was one of those projects where we came together as a team to brainstorm solutions for every single challenge, to ensure client requirements were met – and within budget.”
At the core of our design concept, we wanted the lighting design to seamlessly blend and uplift, rather than overpower. Here’s how we achieved that:
• Smart positioning of lighting – slightly behind desks to reduce shadowing, but still supplying efficient working light
• Extrusions limited the need for more obtrusive, traditional light fixtures
• Suspended profiles were used to create a modern look and feel without being overly prominent
• Powder-coated black diffused lights complemented the semi-industrial nature of the building and design.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
For the perfect balance between performance and aesthetic, we used FIL+LED fittings – a comprehensive family of modular structures for suspending, surface mounting or recessing.
FIL+ is a long-lasting family of fittings from LAMP and uses up to 85% recycled aluminium, reducing carbon footprint. These fittings are classified as photobiological group - 0
according to the UNE 62471 standard, eliminating any exposure to harmful optical radiation.
Other key product points: CRI 80 for good colour rendering, polycarbonate opal diffuser for less glare and great eye comfort, with five years warranty.
THE RESULTS
ITM CEO Darrin Hughes says the lighting team delivered a great design, with top-notch project-management skills.
“I was able to outlay my concerns with the rudimentary first cut we had received from the interior designers and challenge them to do something better. They were great!“
“We went through a few iterations and a lot of the product had to be manufactured to order, but they managed that process well. And when we needed to make budget compromises, they were extremely agile,” he says..

The Defender Hardskin range comes standard with grey RAL 7035 base, photo engraved self-extinguishing polycarbonate diffuser with protective treatment for use in environments where corrosive substances are used. Luminaire efficiency ranges between 115 and 130 Lumens per watt with a rated life of L80 B10 100,000 tq +25°C. Body and diffuser resistant to the following substances: Ethyl alcohol (24 hours at 20°C), aqueous detergents, hydrochloric acid (leaves slight mark), DOT4 brake oil, sulphuric acid (leaves slight mark), ammonia.
