THE SHOW GOES ON A cornucopia of fashion, music, and joy.

his year’s annual Fashion & Entertainment Edition celebrates the artistry shaping our culture. Within these pages, you’ll discover the best of fashion, the thrill of summer blockbusters, the resonance of both new and timeless music, and the spectacle of pure showmanship. Together, these elements form a mosaic of creativity—reminding us that fashion and entertainment are not simply diversions, but shared languages we live and breathe every day.

Not long ago, while scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a band that immediately stopped me in my tracks. In an industry often defined by sameness, they felt refreshingly distinct—raw yet soulful, modern yet timeless. That band is Sons of Legion, the duo of Adam McInnis and Jack “Daddy Jack” Crenshaw. Over the past four years, they have quietly built a body of work without the support of managers, publicists, or labels—yet their music has spoken for itself. Sixteen of their songs have charted, one reached number one on the US iTunes Charts, and their audience has grown from just sixty-eight Facebook followers last year to more than two million today. Their rise is a testament to perseverance and authenticity, and you can read more in Morgan Claybourne’s feature, “Sons of Legion – A United Front.”

Kirkendall. His reflections illuminate not only the artistry of the garments but also fashion’s enduring role as a cultural touchstone that transcends trends. Model Anok Yai stuns on the cover from the runway show, which was held at the Parisian art and culture destination Centre Pompidou.

This issue also turns its attention to Paris, where Louis Vuitton’s SS26 Men’s Collection recently took the stage. Our cover story, “The World Wears Vuitton,” pairs striking imagery with a beautifully written story by VIE’s Art Director, Jack

And because no exploration of entertainment is complete without a guide, our team has carefully curated the Ultimate 2025 Entertainment Guide. From films and television to podcasts and music, it offers a thoughtful roadmap to the stories and sounds that promise to entertain, inspire, and spark conversation in the year ahead.

Of course, these highlights are only the beginning. Every story in this edition has been chosen with care, and every page crafted with the hope that it offers a moment of connection, discovery, or delight.

So, take your time with it. Linger on the images. Let the words unfold. Above all, enjoy this issue of VIE—because the show, as always, must go on.

IN THIS ISSUE, WE ASKED THE CREATIVES: IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE BOOK OR MOVIE TO READ OR WATCH AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

VIE Assistant Editor @caitlynburrus

If I could read one book again for the first time, it would be Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score. It’s one of those rare stories that sweeps you away so completely you forget the rest of the world exists. I fell in love with the characters, their flaws, their resilience, and their gradual, heart-stealing romance, and found myself rooting for them as if they were my friends. It’s equal parts small-town charm, emotional depth, and unexpected twists. Experiencing that journey of heartbreak, healing, and hope all over again? I’d do it in a heartbeat!

VIE Editor & VIE Book Club Podcast Host @jordanlstaggs

As a book addict and someone fluent in movie quotes, this is so hard for me! I think I would want to experience the cinematic mastery of Star Wars again for the first time. From the epic story and legendary characters to the score by John Williams, it’s an all-time favorite for a reason. It would be a bonus to go back in time and see it in the theater in 1977! For books, I’m going to say I’d like to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins again for the first time. I remember needing a hard reset after reading it because it was so impactful—it’s action, rebellion, and politics rolled into an iconic dystopian setting (not unlike Star Wars). I think reading it for the first time now would inspire me.

THE KRICKETS

The Krickets @thekrickets

Emily, Rachel, and Lauren each had different books they would love to read again for the first time. Emily chose Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, which completely captivated her in middle school and made her imagine how she would survive in the wilderness. This book helped Emily realize how much she enjoyed reading. Rachel chose Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, saying, “Her writing is absolutely gorgeous,” and she loved the sense of discovery as the story unfolded against major historical events. Lauren chose Pride and Prejudice, calling it “a master class in the power of tension,” with characters so layered that “when the book ended, you missed them.”

I THINK READING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME NOW WOULD INSPIRE ME.

SONS OF LEGION

Daddy Jack and Adam each had thoughtful picks for a movie they’d love to watch again for the first time. Daddy Jack chose The Truman Show , saying it would be interesting to see it through today’s lens, since we’re living in a very different society than when it first came out. Adam picked The Matrix , noting that it is full of parables that mirror what we are seeing in the world today, especially once you start to understand how this plane of existence really operates.

THE WORLD WEARS VUITTON

PHARRELL WILLIAMS, THE MEN’S CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT LOUIS VUITTON, CONTINUES TO DRIVE HIS VISION OF THE BRAND UPWARD AND OUTWARD. THE LV SPRING/SUMMER 2026

MEN’S COLLECTION EXPLORES THE CRAFT OF PARISIAN DANDYISM AND THE CULTURE OF INDIA THROUGH THE LENS OF MODERN TAILORING AND COLOR, ALL WITH THE URBAN STREETWEAR TWIST FOR WHICH VUITTON IS SO WELL KNOWN. THE RESULT IS A THOUGHTFUL AND WORLDLY COLLECTION OF READY-TO-WEAR GARMENTS, ACCESSORIES, AND BAGS ROOTED IN TRADITION AND DRIVEN BY LIMITLESS IMAGINATION.

n a striking collaboration with Studio Mumbai and architect Bijoy Jain, the Centre Pompidou in Paris serves as the backdrop for this season’s show. The set, inspired by the ancient Indian board game Snakes and Ladders, features prints of large-scale tiles and walkways adorning the carpeting, creating an elegant runway. This stage design embodies the fashion house’s optimistic view of life’s unpredictability—movement, progress, and evolution.

The collection draws from modern Indian fashion, both in spirit and fitting. Sun-faded fabrics, soft tailoring, and rich surface treatments reflect the country’s connection to both nature and city life. There is an overall tone of relaxation that comes through the softness of the bags and loose structure of the clothing. The silhouettes are easy—but sharp—with jackets, waistcoats, and shirts layered on trousers or shorts in a way that is practical and refined. From

a

head to sneaker, the accessories are decorated with understated accents. Even crocodile and ostrich appear mellowed and tinted with a vintage hue. Stripes blend deliberately with checkers, creating
tasteful juxtaposition of patterns.

The color palette plays a major role in this season, taking its cue from India’s landscapes: the walls of Delhi, the haze of Rajasthan, and the midnight of desert skies. Moving away from black to favor deep purples, warm browns, washed greens, and amber tones creates a shift that makes space for more depth. Some pieces appear slightly worn or softened by time, which adds to the lived-in quality of the collection.

Standout pieces of the collection include shell jackets, hiking boots, and fleeceinspired outerwear, all finished in fine details such as prints and embroidery. Even the most traditional, more rugged outdoor items are refined with lace or crystals. It’s a consistent motif in the house’s approach: practical yet high-end.

A thoroughly explored material this season is brown denim, inspired by roasted coffee beans. Instead of using dye, the fabric is woven in a way that allows for natural fade and shifts in wear. Gold hardware and leather loops link the denim and leather, nodding to the house’s history of leather and trunk-making.

A nostalgic note enters with a Louis Vuitton staple: the large trunks. Harkening back to The Darjeeling Limited, the 2007 Wes Anderson film for which Louis Vuitton designed bespoke luggage, creates a retreat to heritage sewn into the very fabric of the show.

Looking closer, even the most casual garments are elevated through painstaking detail. Precise and layered, the collection is adorned with beads, metal thread, lace, stone, and embroidery—all by hand. These are not just surface embellishments; they are integrated into the pieces, with each item treated uniformly and given just as much attention as couture.

The accessories are not excluded from this treatment. From jewelry to footwear, these pieces reflect the collection’s balance of elevated form and function. From silver set with semi-precious stones to aged-gold bangles and ankle bracelets, neckties and hats inspired by cricket uniforms, and jazz shoes with no left or right foot, the collection shows different techniques applied with purpose.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé attend the LV Men’s SS26 runway show in Paris

EACH SEASON, WILLIAMS CONTINUES TO BUILD AN IMPRESSIVE UNIVERSE— ONE WITH SOUL, HERITAGE, AND INNOVATION.

This collection is a redefinition of modern masculinity. The Louis Vuitton man is assured, grounded, aware of the world, and ready to explore it. Each season, Williams continues to build an impressive universe—one with soul, heritage, and innovation. With the Spring/Summer 2026 collection, borders transform from limits to materials for reinvention. Visit LouisVuitton.com

WITHERSPOON'S

SOUTHERN-INSPIRED

AR EESE is a Hit

warm breeze rolled off the Gulf as guests gathered under the striped awnings of The Pearl Hotel in Rosemary Beach, Florida, to toast a decade of Draper James. The beloved Southern lifestyle brand founded by actress and entrepreneur Reese Witherspoon marked its tenth anniversary in style with The Decade Tour. This curated multi-city celebration brought the brand’s signature charm directly to its community of fans.

The Rosemary Beach stop, held from June 26 to 29, was one of ten across the country and a natural fit for the brand’s aesthetic, elegant yet approachable, with a classic fresh twist. Nestled along Scenic Highway 30A, the picturesque town offered a storybook setting for the weekend-long event, where Southern hospitality, coastal beauty, and timeless fashion came together in perfect harmony.

Since its founding in 2015, Draper James has become known for its cheerful prints, feminine silhouettes, and unabashed celebration of Southern traditions.

BRAND

Named for Witherspoon’s grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon, the brand is coated in family legacy and personal history. Draper James was created as a tribute to Reese Witherspoon’s Southern upbringing and the strong, gracious women who influenced her life. It’s her love letter to the South.

Ten years later, Draper James has grown into a full lifestyle label worn and loved by women across the country.

As part of its anniversary tour, the brand transformed spaces within The Pearl into a shopping and social experience. Guests were invited to browse an edited selection of Draper James favorites, including flowing dresses, printed sets, and sweet accessories, inside the hotel’s elegant ballroom and foyer. Every detail, from complimentary Tea Forté sweet tea to curated photo moments, evoked the joy and ease of a true Southern summer.

The weekend kicked off with a pajama party on the rooftop of Havana Beach Bar & Grill. Guests arrived in playful pajama sets and breezy nightgowns, sipping cocktails beneath the string lights as they mingled and shopped under the stars. Personalized embroidery and monogramming added a thoughtful touch, turning new finds into keepsakes.

The following days were filled with drop-in pop-ups, exclusive merchandise, and plenty of cheerful conversation. Visitors could enjoy everything from light bites

and refreshments to first looks at upcoming styles, all while soaking in the warm hospitality that Draper James is known for.

While the Rosemary Beach celebration was just one stop on The Decade Tour, it reflected what Draper James does best: bringing people together around beauty, community, and storytelling. With additional stops in Nashville, Dallas, Chapel Hill, Savannah, and beyond, the tour built excitement for what’s next.

Though Draper James has grown over the past decade, its heart remains the same. Reese Witherspoon continues to play an active role in the company, guiding its creative vision and connecting with customers in ways that feel authentic and deeply personal. At its core, Draper James is about helping women feel confident, stylish, and at ease in their clothing. Each piece is thoughtfully designed to celebrate femininity, comfort, and the kind of effortless charm that fits seamlessly into everyday life.

The ten-year milestone is more than a marker of time; it’s a celebration of the brand’s enduring spirit and the women who wear it. From the classic pieces that started it all to the colorful collections we see today, Draper James has proven that Southern style is always in season. And if the joyful weekend in Rosemary Beach is any indication, the next ten years will be filled with just as much heart, hospitality, and heritage.

Here’s to the next chapter of effortless elegance, thoughtful details, and Southern charm woven into every hemline, handshake, and heartfelt “y’all.”

THE ULTIMATE 2025 ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Dive into the VIE Team’s Picks for Movies, TV, Podcasts, and Music

Warning: This guide may cause a sudden urge to cancel all plans and responsibilities and fall down the entertainment rabbit hole.

Welcome to VIE’s roundup of our favorite must-watches and listens of 2025 so far. This guide is your roadmap through what’s worth watching, listening to, and experiencing right now. We’ve got your blockbuster films, binge-worthy TV series, chart-topping albums, and mic-dropping podcasts. Whether you’re a casual fan looking for your next obsession or a pop culture devotee determined to stay in the know, this guide will keep you in the loop—or, at the very least, entertain you with some of our top picks!

Movies:

Freakier Friday

’Round and ’round, here we go again! Twenty-two years after the Disney hit Freaky Friday remake, we are still arguing with our kids, body swapping, and singing along with Pink Slip. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are as funny as ever while adding some new faces into the mix. Lindsay has been in some fun projects since coming back to film, but something about this sequel has people wanting more from her, thanks to the epic nostalgia. Now that we’re mentioning it, we would love another Herbie movie, Parent Trap, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. Call it a comeback, call it a glow-up—either way, Lindsay’s ready to remind everyone why she was (and still is) the moment!

your door asking to be invited into your nightclub. You can guess where the story goes from there. Michael B. Jordan gives a standout performance—playing twins, mind you—that will have you glued to the screen, even if you’re peeking through your fingers.

Superman

Let’s take a step back in time to 1932 in the Mississippi Delta. The humidity is thick, blues music plays in the background, and suddenly someone knocks on

The film marks the official launch of Chapter One in the new DC Universe, with James Gunn and Peter Safran in the driver’s seat. Like Supermen before, the story follows mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent moonlighting as the most powerful man in the world, battling with malicious billionaire Lex Luthor, and falling for Lois Lane. Although we see the same characters we know and love—plus many

Sinners

Warner Bros. © 2025

DC cameos and additions you probably haven’t seen on screen yet—there’s something fresh about this take as it skips origin story and flies straight into Superman’s everyday struggle with dual identities, purpose, family, and standing up for what’s right.

Another Simple Favor

Five years after the dramatic events of the original film, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively return as frenemies in another whirlwind of murder and betrayal—but this time they toss in a trip to Italy and some identity swapping. Just when you thought you had things all figured out, the filmmakers leave the stage with another cliffhanger primed for a possible third installment.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Among the reboots and reimaginings of the summer, Disney and Marvel Studios added the much-anticipated The Fantastic Four franchise to the list. Marvel’s First

Family stars in the MCU’s first film as part of Phase Six. Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing are already established heroes in this 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic storyline when they must protect their world from a new cosmic threat. Although it’s new, audiences can still feel the nostalgic tone of the beloved comics and past films while visually enjoying the fresh take.

Mickey 17

I’m sure you’d know that face anywhere—and not just because it’s in this movie many times in many different iterations. Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey Barnes in a darkly comic sci-fi film. Mickey is a colonist on a mission to an ice planet in the year 2054. The problem is, he keeps dying. Each time, he is then “reprinted” as a clone with some slight personality shifts. Maybe seventeenth time’s the charm?

The Life of Chuck

Adapted from Stephen King’s 2020 novella If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck is told in reverse chronological order, depicting three pivotal chapters from Chuck Krantz’s life, all the way back to his childhood. Starring Tom Hiddleston, the film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award. While there are mysterious elements, it doesn’t fit under the traditional King adaptation—think less horror, more heartfelt.

TV Series:

The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 3

Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah? Or maybe Team Belly Just Leave These Brothers Alone? Just teasing. Season 3 is the final installment of the adaptation of Jenny Han’s YA novels and brings an emotional conclusion to Isabelle “Belly” Conklin’s journey. Please don’t spoil it, book readers! We dive straight into Belly’s final year of college while she juggles her complex relationships with the Fisher boys. As she commits to life with Jere, her unresolved feelings for Connie resurface, and she faces a whirlwind of emotions and difficult decisions. Even though we are just halfway through the season, the tension is rapidly building—along with the number of Taylor Swift songs on the soundtrack— and you can tell something big is on the horizon.

And don’t miss these:

• Materialists

• One of Them Days

• The Phoenician Scheme

• Happy Gilmore 2

• My Mom Jayne

• How to Train Your Dragon

• The Electric State

• Deep Cover

• KPop Demon Hunters

And Just Like That, Season 3

And just like that . . . that is it. The final chapter of the series post-Sex and the City era has come to an end. While we enjoyed following Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and friends, it was clear from the start that you can’t always re-create lightning

in a bottle like the original. News of an extension of the beloved TV and film series had people feeling nostalgic, but let’s be serious, how were we going to fully enjoy it without our Samantha? This season emphasized renewal and new beginnings—new apartments, new creative paths, and ever-changing dynamics. If Sex and the City was about ambition, romance, and possibility in your thirties, And Just Like That is about navigating reinvention, self-acceptance, and life’s curveballs in your fifties. It’s not the same show—and that’s both its strength and its challenge. Fans looking for a time capsule of the past might be frustrated, but those open to seeing the ladies in a new life stage may find it refreshingly honest. From the original show to the current, at its core, SATC was never about fashion, dating, or even New York (though at times it was the fifth main character)—it’s about friendship as a lifeline. It’s a reminder that even as we change, the people who love us through every version are the ones who make the journey worth it.

The White Lotus, Season 3

Mike White’s third installment of The White Lotus brings a new group of guests to a luxury wellness resort in Thailand. The narrative unfolds over one transformative week, where we meet three best friends, a wealthy family (spoiler*—soon to be broke), the resort staff, a mother and son, and a couple who keep us on our toes. Although it stands alone and you don’t need to see the other seasons to enjoy this one, we highly recommend doing so, as some characters, storylines, and themes cross over.

Running Point

This sports comedy starring Kate Hudson—and putting Brenda Song back on our screens—takes us into the world of NBA basketball from the point of view of the owners and families running things behind the scenes. Kate Hudson’s character has been named the new team president of the Los Angeles Waves and must prove to her three brothers and the world that she can not only handle the male-driven, high-pressure environment, she can change the game.

The Valley, Season 2

We’re all fans of Vanderpump Rules, although some may not admit that out loud. The Bravo spinoff shows some familiar faces, including Kristen Doute, Jax Taylor, and Brittany Cartwright, along with their friends. It follows their transitions into suburban lives while navigating the relentless drama of divorces, relationships, engagements, rehab, pregnancies, children, accusations, and more. We had to throw some reality TV in this list somewhere!

Dept. Q

Crime serials or some law and order are always in style. Add in a cold case factor, and this new Netflix series hits the jackpot. The British crime thriller follows a brilliant detective (Matthew Goode) who’s reassigned to lead a new cold-case unit in Scotland, Department Q, after a devastating shooting leaves his partner paralyzed and another officer dead. The feel of the show is gritty, gothic, and moody—perfect for transitioning to the fall.

n Austin, Texas, a city full of live music and creative energy, Adam McInnis played show after show, guitar in hand, slowly building his voice as a songwriter. Music had always been part of his world growing up, but it was not until after college, when he was writing for other artists, that he realized he had something of his own to share. He was living in Nashville when he found himself drawn to the stage again, but this time, for himself. Those first few years after embracing his passion, days were filled with small venues, late nights, and a steady process of figuring out who he was through sound.

On the other side of the country, Jack “Daddy Jack” Crenshaw was building a different kind of musical career in Los Angeles. His early years in Texas were filled with music, as his family owned a honky-tonk bar, his dad played piano, and songs were played in the background of his everyday life. From a young age, he was experimenting, playing, and creating. In LA, that foundation grew into a career behind the scenes as he made a name for himself as a producer and songwriter. His days were spent in the studio, shaping songs for others and finding his own rhythm in the process.

heir worlds collided over a decade ago when a mutual friend and gifted singer thought they should meet. They clicked instantly and even made a few tracks together, but these were always intended for someone else to perform. The songs were strong, and while the connection was clear, they both knew this was just the beginning. They sensed there was something more they had yet to tap into fully.

Years later, things truly began to shift. Adam was hosting a songwriting retreat in Costa Rica when Daddy Jack walked through the door, and the creative spark reignited. From that point on, they made time to write and record whenever Adam was in Los Angeles, and slowly, the sound that would become Sons of Legion began to take shape.

Some of those early songs found homes in television shows and commercials, hinting that this was more than a side project. It was not until two years ago, when they stepped away from outside pressures and created purely from

instinct, that the vision became clear. They were no longer chasing trends or trying to fit a mold. They were simply making music that felt real and personal to them, and this was when everything started to feel bigger than them both.

When people ask what Sons of Legion sounds like, there is no single genre that fully defines it. Their music is rooted in the American tradition, pulling from blues, country, folk, rock, pop, gospel, hip hop, and soul. Adam brings the grit of the East Coast from his New York roots, while Daddy Jack brings the warmth of California soul. They also credit their shared time in Texas with providing every song a Southern heartbeat.

“Sons of Legion is layered. We’re both the seventh sons in our families, which felt like a rare connection and gave the name personal weight. Then the music started to feel bigger than just us. It felt like it belonged to a movement, something that could bring people together. That’s where ‘Legion’ came in—it means a small army, a united front.”

heir song “Power” was one of the first they wrote together, and it changed everything. It landed in Dodge Ram commercials and the television show Lucifer, suddenly putting their sound in front of millions. The connection was immediate and undeniable, further reassuring them that their gift was something special.

When asked what means the most to them, the first things that come to mind are the messages from people in hospital beds saying their music helped them heal, the videos of children and bikers

singing along, and the strangers around the world who feel seen or lifted by something they created.

Their creative process is simple. Sitting side by side, they play a few chords and let the song lead. Years of experience have taught them to step back and let the music speak. They often compare songwriting to dating: “You have to be patient, stay sharp, and trust your gut.”

Several places have left their mark on the duo: Costa Rica, where their story picked back up; Nashville, known for its grit and heart; Los Angeles, with

its vibrant energy; and Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where recording at FAME Studios connected them to the roots of American music. “That place is soaked in soul—you can feel it in the walls,” they said of FAME, where musical greats like Otis Redding, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, the Gregg Allman Band, Jason Isbell, and many others have recorded.

Their advice for breaking into the industry is clear. “Build a business around your music, and own your voice, your process, and your path. This is where you will find something special.”

Looking ahead, things are moving quickly with an upcoming tour, new music in the works, and more songs making their way into television and film. “It’s full speed ahead from here,” they say. Still, their mission remains the same. They want to share Sons of Legion with as many people as possible, not for fame but for connection. They believe deeply in the healing power of music and hope anyone moved by their songs will pass them along, because you never know who might need them at just the right moment.

V LAYERS OF LIGHT

I I I I I I I
A VIBRANT LOOK INTO MARY BENSON'S ARTISTIC WORLD

ulnerability and vision are essential for an artist. True resonance in art demands courage, passion, a deep well of inspiration, and more than just talent. Mary Benson, celebrated for her vibrant and bold landscape paintings, masterfully transports viewers to North Carolina’s breathtaking scenery. In this exclusive VIE interview, Mary discusses the encouraging words that ignited her full-time art career, her methods for overcoming creative blocks, and the natural beauty that continuously fuels her artistic inspiration.

VIE: Did you always know that you wanted to be an artist?

Mary: Growing up, I didn’t see myself as an artistic person. My sister was the more artsy one, and I was the sporty girl. This changed in high school when I had a great teacher who saw potential in me and encouraged me in my artistic pursuits. This encouragement sparked a passion that has helped guide me throughout my life.

After this, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I worked as a graphic designer for the first few years of my career and grew my art business on the side. As my art career began to take off, I started to see a clear path to making it my full-time vocation. There was a period when my art business was gaining momentum, but I was still working full-time, which meant making sacrifices—whether that was time with friends or other hobbies. I knew I needed to put my head down and reach a point where I felt comfortable making the leap.

Right: Into the Garden, Oil on wood panel, 24 × 36 inches

In 2023, I finally quit my job. I worked part-time for another artist for six months, then took my art full-time! It has been a journey, but I’m incredibly thankful for every step. I genuinely believe that everything happens for a reason.

VIE: That’s an amazing story, and a true testament to how one person’s encouragement can ignite passion and self-belief. I’m curious, where do you find your inspiration?

Mary: I have always loved being outside, whether I was swimming in the ocean or hiking up a mountain, I find myself drawn to the freedom and connection felt through spending time outdoors. My hope is that my art can bring the joy and peace of being surrounded by God’s creation into people’s homes.

My unique artistic style gained inspiration from post-impressionism and Fauvism. The shapes reflect stained glass-inspired imagery. I achieve this by layering textured oil paint over a wash of acrylic, allowing the underpainting to peek through. I then use bold lines and dynamic movements throughout each piece, piecing together a mosaic of color that unifies the composition. By sharing my love of nature through these paintings, I hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of the world around them and find their own moments of solace amidst the chaos of modern life.

VIE: In what ways does your appreciation for the outdoors inform your artistic creations?

Mary: Spending time outside really grounds me. It reminds me how small I am in the best possible way—there’s so much more out there and being in nature helps me slow down and find perspective. I draw a lot of peace and inspiration from the natural world, and I think that sense of wonder and calmness shows up in my work.

VIE: Mary, your perspective is truly beautiful. I would love to hear more about your creative process.

Mary: My process usually begins with an underpainting in acrylic to build structure and depth. From there, I layer oil paint on top, letting the colors evolve as I go. Color is one of the biggest drivers in my work—I love experimenting with

unexpected palettes and combinations that evoke a specific mood or feeling. There’s a lot of intuition involved, and I try to leave room for surprises.

VIE: As a fellow creative, I often find that starting is the most challenging part. Do you experience this, and if so, how do you overcome moments when inspiration is scarce?

Mary: Absolutely. Getting started can be the most challenging part for me, too. I often have so many ideas floating around that it’s tough to choose just one and commit. Once I begin, I can get into a flow, but getting to that point takes intention. Walks help clear my head, and I love creating mood boards with colors, imagery, or compositions that speak to me—it helps me focus and build momentum when I’m stuck.

VIE: In a world full of distractions and chaos, what message do you hope to convey to those who experience your art?

Mary: I hope my art offers a moment of stillness— a breath of fresh air. I want people to feel a sense of beauty, connection, and peace when they see it. My work often centers around nature, community, and color, and I hope it reminds people to pause and appreciate the world around them, even if just for a moment.

My work often centers around nature, community, and color, and I hope it reminds people to pause and appreciate the world around them, even if just for a moment. ”

VIE: Your art has such a distinctive style. Was this a gradual evolution, or did you discover it early in your artistic journey? What led you to find your unique creative voice?

Mary: Thank you! It’s definitely evolved over time and continues to do so. I’ve always been drawn to painting nature, but the style I work in now really started to take shape around 2018. I had more of a breakthrough in 2020 when I started leaning into bold color, stained-glass-inspired shapes, and layering. That’s when things began to click and feel more like me.

VIE: That’s incredible—it must have felt so rewarding to see your artistic voice come through so clearly. So, what inspired your painting, Full House ?

Mary: I’ve always loved florals and patterns, and this piece was about the beauty of people coming together—bringing their stories, perspectives, and energy into one space. I experimented with visual perspective in the objects to reflect the idea of different viewpoints. It was an enjoyable one to create and pushed me creatively.

VIE: In your artistic journey, how do you navigate creative blocks or periods of self-doubt?

Mary: Having a strong support system helps so much. My sister is an artist too, and it’s incredibly valuable to bounce ideas off of her and encourage “

each other through creative highs and lows. My husband is also amazing—he helps keep me grounded when I start to spiral or feel like giving up on a piece. And ultimately, I’ve learned that the best way out is through. Even when it feels hard or uninspired, I try to keep showing up. The flow always returns.

VIE: Of all your creations, which one holds the most profound personal meaning for you?

Mary: Golden Light is a special one. It felt like a breakthrough moment—like my voice and vision aligned, and everything just clicked. This piece has continued to influence a lot of my work since I created it.

VIE: Are there any artists, past or present, that helped influence your work?

Mary: Definitely. I’m deeply inspired by both historical and contemporary artists—Van Gogh and Matisse for their color and emotion, Alice Neel for her boldness, and more recently, Blakely Little and Erin Hanson for their vibrant interpretations of nature.

VIE: What do you envision for the future of your art and career?

Mary: I just want to keep creating and evolving. I hope my work continues to grow as I grow— personally and artistically. I’d love to participate in an artist residency at some point and explore how new environments and communities could influence my perspective and process.

VIE: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Mary: Just gratitude. I feel fortunate to get to do what I love and to share it with others. Art has always been a way for me to connect—with myself, with nature, and with people—and I’m excited to keep exploring where that path leads.

VIE: Mary, thank you!

If You Only Knew

THE KRICKETS to RELEASE THIRD STUDIO ALBUM

rom the Spanish moss of the Gulf Coast to the Hit Recording Capital of the World, the songwriting sirens known as The Krickets have blown audiences away with their harmonies. This fall, they’re celebrating ten years of making music, a new studio album, and an evolution in their musical style. What started as a few friends coming together to perform for a nonprofit concert benefiting CricketFund.org has since become a trio of passionate and talented women chasing their dreams of making great music together. VIE was thrilled to catch up with band members Emily Stuckey Sellers, Lauren Spring, and Rachel Grubb at the 30A Songwriters Festival in January 2025 and to chat with them to get the latest scoop on their upcoming projects!

VIE: TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS A BAND. HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST CAME TOGETHER TO MAKE MUSIC FOR A CHARITY BENEFIT CONCERT?

LAUREN: It’s been almost ten years since that first show for the CricketFund. org, and the changes are wild. I doubt those girls playing that first gig back in 2015 would have believed it if you told them this band would get to record three fan-funded albums, play hundreds of shows for said blessed fans, and collaborate with hero musicians on dream stages—all while raising kids, moving, working, and maintaining solo artist careers. In these ten years, we’ve also had to totally relearn the music industry a couple of times over, seen CDs become obsolete and vinyl become crucial, and had our band go from a quartet to a trio. That last change was a big one, and we waited six years to make another album so we could figure out our new sound, write together, and learn what felt right to our new configuration. We think it was worth the wait because this new album is something we’re beyond proud of.

VIE: HOW DID YOU EACH GET INTO MUSIC? WAS THERE A SPECIFIC DEFINING MOMENT OR ARTIST THAT MADE YOU REALIZE MUSIC WAS THE PATH YOU WANTED TO TAKE?

EMILY: I remember at a very early age repeatedly singing songs I would hear from Disney movies. I drove my brother crazy! He still talks about it. I didn’t

start playing in public until my early twenties. I was always very shy about singing in front of strangers, but a musician friend of mine let me sit in with his band, and that was it. I was hooked!

RACHEL: I had a love of music and poetry from an early age. My mother was a choir director, and we would spend hours singing songs from hymnals and oldies radio. That’s where I learned to sing harmony. I had an epiphany of sorts in my thirties and felt compelled to try songwriting. The songs started pouring out and led me to where I am now.

LAUREN: When I was around twelve years old, I saw a college kid with an acoustic guitar cover a Paul Simon song and absolutely floor a room. After that, I knew I wanted to make other people feel the way he had just made me feel. My dad taught me guitar soon after, and I learned harmony singing along to the Indigo Girls. Many moons later, I’ve just surrendered to the fact that music and songwriting are tied directly to my peace. I’ve been very, very lucky to have found people I love and respect to share this long, strange trip with, who are just as nuts about pursuing it as I am.

VIE: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC STYLE, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED OVER TIME?

LAUREN: Our musical style is a vocal-focused Americana sound. We’ve changed a lot in our different iterations of the band, but that harmony-driven songwriting

style has always been the connecting thread. Over the past ten years, I’d say we’ve come from a raw swamp folk to more of an alt country now.

VIE: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

EMILY: Creating music with two people I love and admire has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Together, we have grown and matured both personally and professionally. I hope to continue creating music with this coven forever.

VIE: AS AN INDEPENDENT BAND NAVIGATING THE MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

EMILY: A significant challenge for us in navigating the music industry has been gaining visibility and breaking through a saturated market. It has been challenging to reach a broad audience, secure bookings at popular venues, and secure media coverage—all while raising our families. Finding a balance between managing various aspects of our career—such as marketing, distribution, funding, and rights—has often felt overwhelming. However, thanks to our strong and loyal fan base, we have been able to persevere and create new music despite these hurdles.

VIE: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT RECORDING YOUR NEW ALBUM, COMING OUT NOVEMBER 1! HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE TRACKS—IS THERE A FAVORITE?

EMILY: Our recording experience with Austin Motlow was nothing short of magical. From the moment we met him and walked around the studio, we knew we were going to create something truly special. He has a calm and patient demeanor, which allowed all of us to relax and let the music flow naturally.

Austin brought in an incredibly talented session player and producer, Sol Philcox-Littlefield, who played almost every instrument on the album— except the keys. His performance blew our minds

and perfectly captured the emotion of each song. With Austin and Ben Tanner on the keys and Caleb Elliot on cello, the project reached a new level of excellence.

This album exceeded every expectation we had going in, and we believe it will do the same for our listeners. Each track is connected by a common thread of love. It’s difficult to pick a favorite, but one that we especially got creative and into the flow state with was “If You Only Knew.”

VIE: YOU RECORDED IT IN FLORENCE, ALABAMA. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO CHOOSE “THE SHOALS” AS YOUR RECORDING VENUE FOR THIS ALBUM? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PEOPLE CALLING THE AREA “SINGING RIVER?”

EMILY: It wasn’t a hard decision, considering some of the greatest albums of all time have been recorded there by our heroes. Florence is also a beautiful and peaceful place that consistently inspires me whenever we visit. We recorded our first album there nine years ago and had such a great experience working with Ben Tanner that it made sense to return to where it all began. This time, we had the opportunity to work with Austin Motlow, who is also at Sundrop Sounds. Working with Austin was fantastic—he gave each song his full attention and brought out the sound and life the tracks truly deserve. When the album was finished, we didn’t want it to end. It’s safe to say this has been our favorite experience to date.

RACHEL: We spent most of our time in the studio or rehearsing at our Airbnb, but we did enjoy ordering in lunch from local restaurants. They were all wonderful! We visited Kodachrome Gardens for their Solstice Celebration and had awesome tomato sandwiches made from tomatoes right from the garden. We spent a lovely couple of hours Sunday evening wading in Cypress Creek at Wildwood Park. Lauren and Emily also took some long walks around the UNA campus and raved about how beautiful it was.

And yes, the area certainly earns its name! We fell in love with the atmosphere of Florence and the surrounding neighborhoods—it’s filled with so much music and talent!

VIE: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO GET INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

RACHEL: Follow your passion and put the hours in. Embrace being a learner and don’t be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes. Get involved in your local music community and support others who are doing what you’d like to do someday.

VIE: WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE KRICKETS? TOURING, FESTIVALS, PREPPING FOR ALBUM RELEASE?

RACHEL: All of the above! We’ve scheduled album release dates for October and November. We all live in different areas of Florida and Alabama, and we wanted to have releases in each of our hometowns. We are so grateful for our fans and supporters. Albums are expensive to create, and this one would not exist without the donations raised on our Kickstarter Campaign. We are honored and grateful for our supporters and hope this album makes them proud!

The Flourishing Summit, held by the Trilith Foundation in May 2025, brought together creative minds from around the world to help inspire the building of thriving communities.

n today’s rapidly changing world, the pursuit of human flourishing has become more than a philosophical ideal—it is a practical necessity for resilient communities and sustainable leadership. Recognizing this, a remarkable gathering was orchestrated to bring together visionaries from a tapestry of disciplines and experiences, all united by a common ambition: to cultivate environments where individuals and collectives not only succeed but truly thrive.

I had the privilege of being among a curated group of leaders this Summer for a Flourishing Summit at Trilith Studios in the Town at Trilith, presented by the Trilith Foundation! The weekend was carefully curated for leaders and creatives with diverse backgrounds for two days of connectivity, inspiration, and wellness. These are core values we cultivate at the Seaside Institute as we inspire communities where people do not just live but thrive. We all strive as leaders to pour into our family, job, mission, and community, etc., and often forget to fill our cup in the process. The two-day event brought together like-minded individuals to reflect on global flourishing and discuss ways to share this message locally.

lizabeth Dixon, Executive Director of the Trilith Foundation, envisioned the program to inspire and restore those who attended while making new connections in a relationship-building environment that will hopefully foster collaboration.

The Flourishing Summit was a unique gathering of thought leaders, designed to catalyze the impact of human flourishing across multiple dimensions of culture.

The summit was an honest and authentic space that introduced the concept of human flourishing, allowing people to engage with it. Leveraging immersive experiences and global research, which originated in partnership with the Global Flourishing Study team at Harvard and Baylor, the team at Trilith provided an intentional environment for influential storytellers, academics, and culture-makers to explore how integrating flourishing concepts could enhance and multiply the impact of our work forward.

As the sun cast its golden glow over the creative heart of Trilith, participants immersed themselves in an atmosphere both invigorating and restorative. Workshops and roundtable dialogues encouraged attendees to peel back the layers of conventional leadership, delving into the intersection of well-being, creativity, and social responsibility. The summit followed a relaxed pace, allowing time for listening, laughter, and reflection, emphasizing holistic well-being.

Whether sharing insights over artisan coffee or engaging in reflective exercises amid the cinematic soundstages, every interaction seemed charged with possibility. Thought leaders, community builders, and innovators shared transformative stories, illuminating how the principles of human flourishing could be translated into tangible actions that ripple from the individual to the collective. The spirit of the gathering was not one of competition, but of co-creation. In this space, vulnerability and vision could meet, forging new alliances and sparking new ideas to elevate the quality of life for all.

With a shared sense of purpose, the Trilith team set out to foster collaboration, inspire growth, catalyze cultural impact, and offer a counter-cultural movement towards health.

We began the weekend with tours of Trilith Studios, formerly Pinewood Studios. The multiple production studios are state-of-the-art facilities where filmmaking and motion pictures thrive. The latest box office hit filmed on site was Superman. Our summit also took place in one of the production studios for a more immersive experience.

Dan Cathy, Founder of Chick-fil-A, and Rob Parker, President and CEO of Trilith Development, led a tour of the mixed-use new urbanism neighborhood of Trilith and showed why many flock here to live, work, and play.

During the summit, I heard from an eclectic group of leaders at Harvard University, Baylor University, Physicians, Chick-fil-A Founders and leaders, Grammy-winning musicians, Pro Sports Professionals, and leaders who presented the Global Flourishing Study by Gallup.

The Gallup Global Flourishing Study explores six domains valued across countries and cultures. The Secure Flourishing Index (SFI) measures these through targeted survey items, with five domains pursued for their own sake and financial stability providing the foundation. When financial stability is omitted, the measure becomes the Flourishing Index (FI). At the same time, contextual factors

Hannah Weber, Trilith Foundation Executive Director Elizabeth Dixon, and Daniel Bashta
Dan Cathy
Musicians Daniel Bashta, Matt Maher, and Tedashii

help understand environments where flourishing thrives in categories such as Happiness and Life Satisfaction, Mental and Physical Health, Meaning and Purpose, Character and Value, Close Social Relationships, Financial and Material Stability, and Religion and Spirituality. When cultivating a community, these factors are essential to human flourishing. While we design physical environments, we also need to study the community’s quality of life.

The summit encouraged leaders not only to connect, but to rest and reflect. We had Yogo available in the morning each day, a massage available, and we had a fantastic, engaging meal that provoked meaningful conversations from prompt cards placed on our table.

A new sense of purpose and renewal was left with each leader, enabling us to continue inspiring a vision forward and upholding the Trilith Foundation’s motto: “Be Well, Do Good - Together.”

Glamour Meets Giving

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUNTER BURGTORF

The warm glow of string lights, the shimmer of sequins, and the hum of conversation blend with the swell of live music. This October 4–5, Santa Rosa Beach will embrace the elegance of another era as Harlan’s Place Foundation invites friends, neighbors, and supporters to its most enchanting night of the year.

For Michael and Marina Carey, this celebration is more than a glamorous gathering; it is a love letter to their son Harlan, who was born with Down syndrome, and to the community they envision for him and others with intellectual disabilities. The foundation that bears his name was born from a family’s dream of a place where people with disabilities can live with independence, opportunity, and belonging. The Gala is another stride toward turning that dream into something tangible.

On Saturday, the Stock & Trade Design Co. showroom will be transformed into a scene Fitzgerald himself might have penned—flapper fringe and dapper

tuxedos, strands of pearls swaying in time with the music, candlelit tables, and champagne flutes catching the light. Guests will drift between the dance floor while pausing to savor decadent bites or try their luck at the silent auction. “Our favorite part of last year’s Gatsby Gala,” Michael shares, “was seeing the community come together in 1920s style to support a cause so close to our hearts. The energy was electric, from the live music and casino tables to the joy on guests’ faces as they danced the night away, all while knowing they were making a tangible difference for individuals with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities.”

The celebration will take over the entire Stock & Trade showroom and the adjoining Stock & Brew

The 2024 Gatsby Gala was a huge success, with hundreds of patrons dressing in 1920s-themed finery and coming out to Stock & Trade in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, to raise funds for Harlan’s Place Foundation.

The 2025 Gala & Golf Weekend promises to be even bigger!

The Carey Family

Café, offering guests an array of experiences to enjoy throughout the evening.

International hip-hop violinist Josh Vietti will serenade the crowd before the band takes over to keep the dance floor lively, while casino games add a playful, Gatsby-inspired edge to the night. “This year,” says Michael, “we’re turning the volume up on everything! Guests can look forward to fresh ways to win big at the casino tables, live music performances, and the return of our breathtaking Gatsby-inspired garden scene. We’re also introducing an exclusive VIP section for a more glamorous experience.”

The magic continues the following morning at the Birdies & Doubles Invitational at Burnt Pine Golf Club, where a friendly round of golf becomes another way to rally for the cause. “We wanted to extend the momentum of the Gala into a full weekend of giving and connection,” says Michael. “Golf brings people together in a relaxed, fun environment, and the Invitational is a perfect way for supporters to continue making an impact while enjoying a beautiful day on the course with friends.”

The Careys have set an ambitious goal for the weekend: to raise $100,000 between the Gala and the Golf Tournament. Every ticket purchased, bid placed, and toast raised brings them closer to their vision: a thoughtfully designed residential campus filled with fully furnished apartments, vibrant shared spaces, and opportunities for residents to thrive. And at the center of it all, the spirit of Harlan, whose joy, determination, and love inspired it from the very beginning.

From

For those wanting to make an even greater impact, the Harlan’s Hero ticket sponsorship offers a way to directly contribute to the foundation’s mission while enjoying all the festivities in style. “Harlan’s Hero ticket buyers are champions of our mission,” Michael and Marina explain. “By purchasing a Harlan’s Hero ticket, you are directly providing a complimentary Gala pass for an individual with Down syndrome or an intellectual disability. Your ticket helps create a magical, inclusive night where everyone can celebrate together.”

“This weekend is more than an event—it’s a movement,” Michael and Marina emphasize. “Whether you attend in person, volunteer, sponsor, or donate, you become part of a vision to change lives. We invite everyone to dress up, tee up, and join us in making history for Harlan’s Place Foundation.”

This October, Gala & Golf: A Gatsby Affair invites you to step into a night of beauty and benevolence, where every sparkling detail carries a deeper meaning. The celebration takes place on the 4th and 5th, and the invitation to buy tickets is open: dress your finest, join the fun, and be part of a story that’s just getting started.

If you’re unable to attend, you can still step into this story in a meaningful way: by visiting HarlansPlace.org to support the cause. Your gift will advance the shared dream of building an inclusive, empowering home for adults with Down syndrome, a place where independence and community live side by side.

DISCOVER AUTHENTIC Panama City, Florida

A Local’s Perspective

Come fall in love with my Panama City. Those like me, who grew up in this town and love all its nooks and crannies, can tell you it’s about more than the tourist stops, and should never be confused with our neighbor, Panama City Beach. In “town,” our culture and lifestyle are shaped by the waters of St. Andrews Bay, the lifeblood of our community. Its fishing, shipping, and manufacturing harbors have long provided food, jobs, recreation, and more to the people here. We’ve got salt water in our veins and the grit of the blue-collar folks who laid the foundation for Panama City today.

Founded in 1909, Panama City is a well-known destination in Florida, but likely looks different from what most picture when they imagine the state. Shipyards, lumber mills, and commercial fishing are far more prevalent than beaches and theme parks here. History guides our vibe and culture, seen in everything from the architecture to the art and cuisine. The newer generations of Panama City locals are building on those roots, crafting a community for people who appreciate place-making. This town has an old soul but stars in its eyes, and we’re excited for the future we are building here. Experience it like the locals do!

FOUR UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOODS, MANY UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

Panama City is best savored. Explore it over a few days by breaking it into four historic neighborhoods: Historic Downtown, St. Andrews, Millville, and Glenwood. Each has a story and culture of its own to enjoy. Together, they make a place truly worth visiting.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Historic Downtown was Panama City’s first business district. For decades, bustling shops, boutiques, and eateries lined Harrison Avenue, Downtown’s main street. Then, like in many American downtowns, ours declined and suffered blight from the late 1900s through the early 2000s as mall culture grew and urban sprawl saw the city expand north toward Lynn Haven.

However, about ten years ago, a group of dedicated locals began working to revitalize Historic Downtown. Later, the town planners at Dover Kohl & Partners were commissioned to restructure the district for walkability and sustainable living, making it more attractive for locals and visitors alike. Now, just off the shores of the teeming St. Andrews Bay, sits one of the cutest downtown districts in America. Prim storefront facades face a newly

lined with oak trees (oaks are more common in North Florida than palm trees), and locally owned restaurants offer everything from Irish classics at House of Henry to homemade pizza at Mosey’s, Italian favorites at Ferrucci, and fresh Gulf seafood, of course. Brew pubs like El Weirdo—which, to my knowledge, is also the largest mural art installation in Florida—and History Class offer local flair at its finest. Bespoke shops welcome guests with experiences you can only find here.

Start your long weekend of exploration by checking in at the boutique Hotel Indigo on Panama City Marina with its Old Florida aesthetic. Next, stop by the visitor center at Destination Panama City to pick up a map of our mural trail (more on that later), and then start walking.

For the gamers of all ages, try The Portal, our new board game shop and café, or pop in to play vintage video games at Point Break, our old-school arcade. Browse antiques and vintage clothing at Main Street Antiques, where you never know what you’ll find. Snag the latest read and a glass of wine at Bookish Boutique. Wander into Thistle & Thorne, which is a study in contrasts; decorated like a 1930s-style apothecary, it’s a lively respite where guests can sip herb-infused cocktails or enjoy British High Tea. Did I mention there’s a tattoo parlor in the back? Some other Downtown highlights include checking out the skateboard selection and accessories at Relief Skate Supply, enjoying a cone from Sticky Fingers ice cream parlor, and, on Saturday mornings, strolling the diverse Panama City Farmers Market to grab some local produce or other goods.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the art. Historic Downtown has become a hub where our local creatives can thrive. You can spend a day wandering Downtown just finding all the murals, which are found on walls, in crosswalks, inside buildings, and outside them—or sometimes both.

Downtown is also home to two of our signature arts structures. The Panama City Center for the Arts is the latest incarnation of the building that was our first city hall, police station, and jail. Now it hosts gallery exhibits, regular arts events, and classes for every age and stage.

The prize building downtown is the Martin Theatre. Built in 1937 and currently under renovation and expansion, this proud art deco-style theater is a signature icon of our whole town. When it reopens, it will have a complete period-specific makeover and include the latest technology for performances and film, a new event space, and a speakeasy-style restaurant. The bay gives life to our town, but the Martin will soon be the beating heart that keeps creativity and excitement pumping.

Historic Downtown is the perfect mix of noble age and playful youth, classic hometown charm and tattooed, artsy edge. It is best to explore on foot, so you can pop into any place that catches your eye along the way.

ST. ANDREWS

Leaving Downtown, a short jaunt along scenic Beach Drive will lead you to our saltiest historic neighborhood, St. Andrews. This former fishing outpost spills into a sprawling marina and boasts some of our most colorful characters, as well as the best sunsets. St. Andrews’ fishing past has shaped its saline character. Here, you’ll find a quirkier side of Panama City coupled with some of our most creative restaurants and establishments.

Hunt’s is one of our time-honored oyster bars (FYI, there is almost always a wait, but it’s worth it). Captain’s Table and Uncle Ernie’s also serve seafood that spent last night in the Gulf before making it to your plate. If you’re in the Gulf yourself, pull your boat up to Ernie’s dock and stroll in for a meal. Lounge on the back porch while eating at

The Grocery Kitchen, then pop across Beck Avenue for refreshments at Luna Muna Cafébar. Would you prefer local pizza? Visit Slice House or Enzo’s.

One highlight many miss out on is the free walking tour of St. Andrews led by the staff of the Panama City Publishing Company Museum. They’ll guide you through the neighborhood and show you the still-working Heidelberg Press in their printing house, once home of the Panama City Pilot, the St. Andrews Bay News, and Lynn Haven Free Press newspapers circa the 1920s.

St. Andrews—or “St. A,” for short—is also home to one of our foundational arts organizations, Floriopolis. This troupe of creative pioneers not only lends a deep yet wistful flavor to this corner of Panama City but also provides a gathering place for kids of all ages to express themselves unbidden by rules or expectations.

You can also enjoy a bar crawl of some of our best dives in this part of town. These unassuming eateries deserve high praise for local flavor, both in food and atmosphere. One of our most famous stops is simply called The Dive. Newby’s Brewhouse on the Bay is a great spot for an eclectic mix of live music, where everyone is welcome. You’ll find a diverse crowd of punk rockers, drag queens, cowboys, and other free spirits having a blast until the wee hours. Little Village is a place that genuinely captures the essence of St. Andrews. Think funky artist hangout meets legit fish taco joint, all found on the bank of Lake Ware under a giant palm-frond palapa. It is a must-visit.

MILLVILLE

As its name implies, the oldest of our neighborhoods is a former sawmill village. That origin story gives Millville its look and feel, melding cottagelined streets, waterfront parks, and one of our most storied oyster bars.

Millville is just five minutes from Historic Downtown across Watson Bayou. As you enter this aged hamlet, the first milestone is the spanking new Snug Harbor Marina and public boat launch. Watson Landings Marina also sits next door (it’s the one with the beautiful octopus mural crawling across the boathouse). A few lots down on Maple

Above: Gene’s Oyster Bar in Millville

Avenue is Millville Waterfront Park, where you can settle into a porch swing and soak up the view of bobbing sailboats among an authentic Panama City brackishscented zephyr.

Walk around the corner from the park to Gene’s Oyster Bar. Shucking since 1910, this cash-only joint boasts its own historical marker. It’s a teensy place with ten bar stools, just right for you and some friends—or newly met locals—to consume a couple dozen oysters and wonder why more people don’t know about this place.

A few blocks away from Gene’s is one of our newest restaurants, Getchewabox. (Try the shrimp po’boy!) Or, if you’re in the mood for Asian food, Aroi Thai is worth a visit just down Fifth Street.

Millville is dripping in Panama City charm and, in my opinion, will be the next big thing in our town’s renaissance. A beautiful Old Florida borough with public parks, water access, and antique corner eateries? Yes, please.

GLENWOOD

Glenwood is our historic Black neighborhood. It has a noble past of local entrepreneurship, and a new generation of local leaders is breathing fresh life into this special area. In addition to the gleaming new 30,000-square-foot Martin Luther King Community Center, it hosts the Glenwood Marketplace, a farmers market-art bazaar-community celebration mashup that is always worth wandering through. Its wares are all local, made by locals, all the time. Glenwood also has an audible walking tour on the Otocast app that honors and celebrates the businesses of the past.

Hungry after the market and tour? Fill your belly and spirit at Josiah’s Southern Cooking, the soul food place of your dreams. The fried catfish has almost tempura-like breading with a mild and delicious meat. The greens and cornbread seem to possess Southern magic from old family recipes. And the people—well, they are sweeter than the tea.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL FLORIDA DESTINATION

Panama City has my heart. Our historic neighborhoods—and the people who inhabit them—are what make the place special. As a local, every time I pass an old friend on the sidewalk or experience a new local business opening, I fall deeper in love with our little bayside corner of the world. After a weekend of exploration, art, and great food, I think you will, too.

PIRATES VOYAGE: SWASHBUCKLING FUN LANDS IN FLORIDA

or locals and visitors of Panama City Beach, Florida, a new dinner theater experience offers the excitement of cannon fire, mermaids, buried treasure, rival pirate crews, and much more. Dolly Parton’s Pirates Voyage, also

“DOLLY PARTON’S PIRATES VOYAGE, WAS ALSO DUBBED ’THE MOST FUN PLACE TO EAT’ SINCE OPENING IN EARLY SUMMER.”

dubbed “the most fun place to eat” since opening in early summer, combines an acrobatic romp across the seven seas with an engaging storyline as Captain Blackbeard and his quartermaster, Calico Jack, employ the Crimson crew and Sapphire crew in a race to find the legendary sunken treasure of Captain Davy Jones. All the while, guests (who become honorary crew members, of course) enjoy a pirate feast served with flair.

Buzz about Pirates Voyage began in PCB when the large parcel of land west of Pier Park on Highway 98 was cleared to make way, and the enormous stadium-like structure was built over eighteen months. Those frequently driving past could see

Dolly Parton joined Pirates Voyage Captains Red Scarlett and Indigo Debleu onstage to welcome the show to Panama City Beach in June 2025.

the horseshoe-shaped seating take shape. Still, the real excitement began when the pirate ships themselves became briefly visible before the building was completed in early 2025. This is the third Pirates Voyage location, with attractions in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It follows the tradition of immersive dinner theater experiences such as Dolly Parton’s Stampede, which has delighted audiences since 1988.

“I always find so much joy in developing entertainment projects that bring families together to create memories that will last long after their visit, and my new Pirates Voyage dinner show does that and more,” Parton said at the new location’s grand opening in early June. She went on to say, “The atmosphere and people here in Panama City Beach have been so welcoming and excited to have us here; it certainly reminds me of the other great familyoriented areas where we have my dinner shows. To me, it has been the perfect place to open this new Pirates Voyage.”

“ABOVE

ALL, I SEE MYSELF AS A STORYTELLER, AND THIS IS AN ENTERTAINING EXPERIENCE THAT COMBINES SO MANY ELEMENTS IN

ONE SHOW THAT PEOPLE WILL WANT TO EXPERIENCE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.”

– DOLLY PARTON

For guests who are big fans of Parton’s music, an original song called “Sail Away” is featured prominently during the mermaids’ aerial acrobatics, wherein the audience feels as though they have journeyed under the sea with these beautiful and mysterious creatures. “The excitement and adventure in Pirates Voyage are something I have loved being a part of, and I loved writing the song that our beautiful mermaids perform to, ‘Sail Away,’” Parton shared. “Above all, I see myself as a storyteller, and this is an entertaining experience that combines so many elements in one show that people will want to experience it again and again.”

From pirates and mermaids performing high-flying and swashbuckling stunts to animal performers such as “Salty” the sea lion and a flock of colorful macaws, the show has something for everyone—action, adventure, and dare we say even a splash of romance? Guests are invited to cheer, sing, and “yo ho” their way through a four-course feast as they support their crew—the Sapphire pirates are led by Captain Indigo Debleu, and the Crimson pirates sail under Captain Red Scarlett. The voyage culminates in an epic battle during which specially selected members from each audience crew join the fun to participate in a series of challenges. The best out of seven wins—but don’t worry, there’s treasure enough to go around, and no matter which crew you join, you’re guaranteed a good time!

The Pirates Voyage begins in the lobby when you arrive at Pirates Village. Get there early to enjoy extra entertainment, learn some pirate shanties and vocabulary,

Pirates Voyage welcomes guests to join the crew and enjoy a pirate feast while the performers engage in high-flying acrobatics, diving competitions, swordfights, and a journey to mysterious waters in search of sunken treasure.

“I KNOW THAT I NEVER GET TIRED OF SEEING THIS SHOW WHERE YOU GET TO ACTUALLY BE PART OF THE PIRATE CREW,’ PARTON SAID. ‘WHERE ELSE CAN YOU DO THAT? I HOPE EVERYONE WHO LIVES HERE COMES TO VISIT AND WILL JOIN THE FUN WITH US...”

and set yer sights on the Pirates Treasure gift shop! The bar is open pre-show and fully stocked with a curated selection of snacks and themed cocktails, frozen adult drinks, and nonalcoholic beverages in fun drinkware. Once seated with your crew inside Buccaneer Bay, dinner starts with warm Voyager Creamy Vegetable Soup and a Buccaneer Biscuit, then Half O’ Roasted Chicken and Me Hearties Pulled Pork, accompanied by a side of Cob-O’ Buttery Corn and Matey’s Mashed Potatoes. Dessert offers a choice of Apple O’ Me Eye Pie or a Chocolate Coconut Cake—both are delicious! Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals are available on request.

VIP tickets offer exclusive meet-and-greets, pirate swag, souvenir photos, and more, plus the best seats in Buccaneer Bay, where guests are right in the action! Other pre-show activities for purchase include mermaid and pirate makeovers and special animal encounters. With the busy summer season winding down in

PCB, it’s the perfect time to get out and enjoy this new attraction, with performances nearly every day through mid-October and four times per week heading into November. Whether joining the crew for the first time or returning with new friends and family, an unforgettable adventure awaits.

“I know that I never get tired of seeing this show where you get to actually be part of the pirate crew,” Parton said. “Where else can you do that? I hope everyone who lives here comes to visit and will join the fun with us—we’ll even teach you how to speak some pirate talk. Ahoy!”

What If We Celebrated Anyway?

Have you ever stood in the middle of someone else’s celebration—smiling, clapping, maybe even holding a glass of champagne—while secretly feeling like a spectator in your own life?

Celebrating can feel challenging—especially when we are in seasons when it feels like there is nothing to celebrate. It can be tempting to think parties or gatherings are reserved only for major milestones. We’re “too busy,” “too sad,” or waiting for the “real” joy to show up later.

Especially in our social media-driven age, it can start to feel performative. Are we genuinely excited about this moment, or are we just trying to make it look good for the photos and videos we’ll post later? Maybe we started out excited, but eventually the occasion becomes more about documenting the moment than actually experiencing it.

I know what it’s like to walk through seasons where life feels gray. In those moments, I could barely muster up the energy to participate in a friend’s joy because mine seemed so far away. It was in those moments I learned something important: Choosing to celebrate is one of the best ways to experience joy in our current circumstances.

Here’s what else I’ve learned, especially in the gray seasons: even in my darkest moments of grief, I’ve felt a quiet nudge to practice the discipline of celebrating. Not because I wanted to discount my pain, but because I needed to be reminded of God’s goodness, even when my life felt anything but good.

When you think about it, celebration is a huge cadence of our lives and calendars. We mark holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, and seasons. In ancient times, people marked sacred festivals not just with rituals but with joy. These weren’t just

religious obligations; they were ways to remember how far they’d come, what they’d been rescued from, and who had carried them through. Even the Bible outlines many feasts and festivals. The word “celebrate” in the Old Testament is translated from the Hebrew verb hagag, which means “to prepare, keep, or observe a feast or festival.” The reason for celebration was to remember what God had done for his people.

We should celebrate today for the same reason: to remember and rejoice in what God has done. Whether we’re lighting candles for a festival, gathering for a family meal, or raising a glass on a Tuesday just because we can, we celebrate to connect, to remember what matters, and to honor that we’re still here.

In my own life and faith, I’ve learned that celebration isn’t just about parties—it’s about paying attention. Psalm 27:13 says, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” That line reminds me to look for goodness not just in hindsight but in the here and now. A celebration doesn’t have to be a party. It can be making dinner plans the day you get your hair done so you can make the most out of a fresh blowout, or making a home or apartment registry you can share with friends when they ask you what you want for your birthday. It can be inviting people over to celebrate finishing that project that’s been consuming your life for months.

Life will never stop giving us reasons to postpone joy, but we don’t have to keep looking ahead at future possibilities to rejoice—those will come. We don’t want to look back and regret not taking a moment to savor the goodness of right now.

So, what if we paused anyway—to mark this moment, this heartbeat, this quiet miracle of being alive? What if we dared to look the hard things in the world in the face and tell them there is still beauty to be found here? What if we were brave enough

to rebel against the ways life tries to tear us down and found reasons to bring light into the world?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to sit on the sidelines waiting for something that seems “worthy” of celebration. I want to be an active participant in this one precious, beautiful life God has gifted me with. God doesn’t ask us to sit on the sidelines as spectators; He invites us to participate.

Let’s celebrate today on earth as it is in heaven.

Behind the Bar WITH CHEF ALBA HUERTA

For Chef Alba Huerta, hospitality is where the heart is.

For some, a foray into the restaurant world is a fleeting affair, a means to an end. But for Chef Huerta, it was the spark of an all-consuming passion. She began as a bartender in Houston, swiftly rising to general manager. Three years later, the opportunity arose for her to become a bar owner in the same city. This wasn’t a sudden decision; she had long envisioned it, even before possessing the resources to make it a reality. There’s an inherent magic in crafting something enduring and deeply personal, especially when it blossoms into success. In the hospitality sector, the dream of ownership often seems distant. Yet, a truly successful restaurant isn’t just about aesthetics, recipes, or grand openings; it’s where genuine skill emerges from unwavering drive, innovation, and an abiding love for the craft!

VIE interviewed Chef Huerta about Julep, the essence of her business, her innovative approach to mixology, and the vital role of community in the industry.

VIE: The cocktail and bar scene remains largely male-dominated. What female leaders have inspired you, and what experiences did you choose to adopt or abandon when establishing your own business?

Chef Alba Huerta: There may not be as many women at the top, but we always find each other. There’s a deep sense of solidarity, and I’ve been fortunate to have mentors

Chef Alba Huerta, owner of Julep

who shared their experiences honestly — not just the wins, but the struggles too. Many of them were restaurant owners, and our conversations grounded me in the realities of ownership. They helped me understand that the glamor is only part of the picture — behind it is seasonality, financial forecasting, leadership development, and the ability to be forwardfacing while running a tight ship behind the scenes. That kind of insight shaped how I run Julep.

VIE: As a Mexican native, you’ve often discussed blending traditional flavors with modern cocktail techniques. Julep’s drink menu is wonderfully diverse and imaginative—could you share your personal favorite from the selection?

Chef: The Morning Call is the closest to my heart. It’s inspired by a newspaper that circulated on the Mexican side of the border during Prohibition, when Americans would cross over for cocktails. The drink reflects that cultural bridge — it starts with a margarita base, gets lightened with tonic, and finishes with a float of hibiscus mezcal. It’s familiar but layered with nuance. In Oaxaca, it’s traditional to infuse mezcal with local flavors, and I wanted this cocktail to honor that—a balance of history, flavor, and story.

Chef: Sultry, lively, and jovial.

VIE: Running a high-profile business presents unique challenges. What advice would you offer women who are hesitant about leaping into such an endeavor?

“AT JULEP, WE LEAD WITH GENEROSITY, WARMTH, AND KINDNESS.”

VIE: How do you express your Latin heritage in your work, and what aspects of it do you draw upon?

Chef: Being Mexican isn’t something I tap into occasionally—it’s how I move through the world. That shows up in my problem-solving, in my resilience, and in how I create space. At Julep, we lead with generosity, warmth, and kindness. We bring that same energy to our team culture as well. One of my favorite things is how much our bar respects each person’s background. When we develop cocktails, everyone brings a piece of their story to the table. Our menu is as diverse as the people behind it, and there’s deep mutual respect in that.

VIE : Given your Texan roots, establishing a bar here is a logical step. However, what made opening Julep in Houston specifically significant to you?

Chef: My family is here. That’s the simple answer—but also the most important one.

VIE: If you had to describe the ambience at Julep in three words, what would they be?

Chef: The truth is, the work never stops. That’s not a bad thing—it’s just constant. There are systems we built in year one that we still use, and others we’ve adapted as we grew. You’re always refining, always balancing what to keep and what to evolve. And the days fly by. My advice is to celebrate the wins, however small, and surround yourself with people who love and support you. That community is everything — it’s what sustains you through the long haul.

VIE: You’ve received accolades such as Entrepreneur’s 100 Most Powerful Women and the James Beard Award. What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your career to date?

Chef: Without question, reaching our ten-year anniversary. Less than three percent of bars make it that far, and it meant everything to me. It was proof of our resilience, our commitment to this city, and the fact that we’ve stayed true to who we are—every step of the way.

VIE: Chef Huerta—Thank you!

n the heart of Scotland’s whisky country, one family is distilling more than spirits—they’re bottling memories, rewriting tradition, and proving that great Scotch doesn’t have to take itself too seriously.

In the rolling lowlands just outside Glasgow, a new generation is quietly building something extraordinary. At the heart of this movement is RAER Spirits, an authentic family-run distillery founded by the Kean siblings on their childhood farm in Jackton, Scotland. What started as a creative solution to an age-old family divide over the taste of whisky has grown into a full-fledged brand with a global following and a fresh approach to an often-rigid tradition.

Jaynie Kean, who now champions RAER across the U.S., didn’t always see herself in the spirits world. “I

don’t think any little girl grows up wanting to be in the whisky industry, or I hope not!” she jokes. But her adventurous palate, shaped by a fearless approach to food growing up (haggis and blood pudding were no big deal), eventually steered her behind the bar at age eighteen. That’s when everything changed.

“Working in a bar opened up a whole new world of flavor,” she shares. “At first, I was still drinking vodka sprites, but the more I explored, the more I realized how much depth and nuance existed in spirits.”

The one flavor she couldn’t stomach? Scotch. “I thought it was awful,” Jaynie laughs. “I’d serve it as a joke if someone asked for a surprise shot!” Her father, a proud whisky lover, disagreed and decided to do something about it. Together with Jaynie and her siblings, he worked with blenders to create a Scotch they could all enjoy. The result was the first batch of RAER Original, developed in 2016: smooth, accessible, and crafted for celebrating everyday moments with people you love.

While the blend was their starting point, the Keans weren’t interested in outsourcing. By 2020, they completed construction on Jackton Distillery, a state-of-the-art facility built on their former farm. Unlike many brands that claim to be family-run, the Keans are intensely hands-on, overseeing every step of the process from growing barley and drying it on-site to malting, brewing, distilling, and aging in their proprietary casks. Today, Jackton Distillery is one of the only grain-to-glass operations of its kind in Scotland.

And RAER is anything but traditional in its attitude. “We don’t believe in telling people how to enjoy whisky,” Jaynie says. “Put it in a cocktail. Add ice. Add soda. Just enjoy it! If you were to die tomorrow, would you want your last drink to be something you didn’t like?”

The flexible approach is clearly working. RAER’s signature blend—crafted from seasonal malts and grains sourced from across Scotland—has become a favorite for new whisky drinkers and seasoned Scotch lovers. Whether sipped neat or mixed into a cocktail, it’s made to be shared. One of Jaynie’s favorite serves? The Whisky-Rita. “It’s just like a margarita, but swap out the tequila for RAER,” she explains. “You’ll find yourself a delicious summer drink, often without the hangover!”

While the brand is gaining traction across the U.S.—especially along Florida’s Scenic Highway 30-A and in ABC Fine Wine & Spirits stores—its soul remains firmly rooted in Scotland. Visitors to Jackton Distillery can book a five-star tasting tour through the Keans’ converted farm buildings, where

they’re welcomed like family and given a front-row view of the entire production process. With sweeping countryside views and a unique, intimate atmosphere, it’s become a must-visit destination for whisky lovers.

RAER’s range of spirits is expanding, too. In the UK, the team has launched a series of award-winning whisky expressions, including cask-finished blends and small-batch single malts. Their Jackton Gin, made with nine botanicals and led by sea buckthorn, has also earned accolades for its vibrant flavor and elegant bottle. A standout offering, Something Blue Wedding Gin, was created by RAER team members Colin and Jess as a tribute to their wedding. Infused with butterfly pea flower, the gin is naturally blue and changes color when mixed. The bottle’s laceinspired design echoes the detail of Jess’s wedding gown, making it a sentimental favorite that’s as romantic as it is fun. The team hopes to bring this beloved gin to the U.S. soon.

RAER is also on the brink of releasing its first official single malt Scotch, with aging casks already five years into maturation. “It’s wild to think I was eighteen when we started this, and now I’m twenty-seven,” Jaynie says. “The thing about the whisky industry is that it gives you an existential crisis about how life goes by so fast. One day we are filling a cask, and three years later we have a single malt, and so much in life has changed.”

And as for the name? RAER is more than just a clever take on the word “rare.” It began years before whisky was even a thought, as a lighthearted family idea. “My dad came bursting into the room one day saying, ‘I’m a genius!’” Jaynie recalls. “He had this vision for a photo series with two people in kilts, backs to the camera, bums out, overlooking some epic ‘rare’ view. RAER spelled backwards is ‘rear.’ We rolled our eyes, of course. But the phrase ‘Make Every Moment RAER’ stuck. And that became our guiding philosophy.”

It’s that playful spirit, paired with a deep respect for tradition and a commitment to quality, that makes RAER so memorable. From the rolling fields of Jackton to sunny Southern beach towns, this is a whisky born to bring people together—no matter how they like to drink it.

FIX IT

IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T

Cafe Thirty-A Celebrates 30 Years

For thirty years, Café Thirty-A has been a consistent beacon of excellence on Florida’s Highway 30-A, even as the culinary scene from Inlet Beach to Miramar Beach has seen a continuous influx of new, contemporary restaurants.

This 30-A landmark, established in 1995, has upheld its original vision, cultivating a devoted following among both residents and tourists.

“As one of the longest-standing restaurants on Highway 30-A, Café Thirty-A’s enduring success comes down to its pursuit of consistency.”

Upon taking ownership in 2023, Jackie Maliszewski and David Kessler committed to upholding the vision of the late, esteemed founder Harriet Crommelin: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” They have honored this legacy by preserving the restaurant’s traditions while introducing subtle modern elements, achieving a perfect blend of old and new.

As one of the longest-standing restaurants on Highway 30-A, Café Thirty-A’s enduring success comes down to its pursuit of consistency. Its menu draws on the signature Coastal Southern flavor that has made it a must-visit restaurant for decades. Even as the winter months near and tourists start to dwindle, the dining room remains lively, filled with a blend of returning regulars and delighted first-time guests. Many visitors plan their vacations around a stop at Café Thirty-A, eager to enjoy a favorite dish they’ve been dreaming about since their last visit.

Beyond the kitchen, consistency defines every aspect of the restaurant. Many staff members have been with the restaurant for years, fostering a welcoming and familiar atmosphere. This allows loyal, returning guests to feel at home with each visit, making every meal a tradition that revives cherished memories of past 30-A getaways and special celebrations.

While Jackie and David have made it their mission to preserve Café Thirty-A’s history, they also allow it to evolve naturally. Signature classics, like the famous Crab Cakes or the Sesame Crusted Tuna, remain permanent fixtures on the menu, but each chef brings their unique history of flavor and flair to the menu.

The restaurant’s design mirrors this approach, with subtle interior updates that invigorate the space while preserving its familiar allure. This philosophy extends to the cocktail list, which offers playful twists

on timeless classics. Drinks like the Thirty-A Old Fashioned or a light Pineapple Cosmo keep the bar program exciting, without guests having to stray too far from their traditional go-to drink.

“The most rewarding aspect since David and I took over the restaurant is hearing people express gratitude for upholding traditions while embracing our new additions,” Jackie reflects. “It’s truly humbling that Café Thirty-A continues to earn excellent reviews for both its cuisine and service.”

This year, on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Café Thirty-A will host its Annual Charity Ball, one of the restaurant’s most cherished Christmastime traditions. The evening will include a large silent auction, with all proceeds benefiting Caring and Sharing of South Walton. As Café Thirty-A celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, owners Jackie and David remain

committed to carrying Harriet’s vision into the future. Jackie noted that the ball “gets better and better each year,” making it one of the most memorable parts of Café Thirty-A’s history.

Café Thirty-A has thrived for thirty years in a region experiencing continuous growth, proving that a strong legacy endures. Guests return repeatedly to savor its exquisite culinary offerings. With Harriet’s legacy guiding its path, the restaurant is poised for a future as memorable as its past three decades.
