The Physician Licensure Examination spearheaded by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) last October 2022 had already announced last November 10 that out of 5,958 examinees only 3,826 successfully passed, ready to scrub in, save lives, and proudly be called doctor before their names.
To aspiring physicians and future MDs, let us be inspired by the stories of these board exam passers. Behind the numbers, each one has a unique story to tell, but only one person stands out the most.
The one and only, Justin Adriel Zent Togonon from the University of the Philippines-Manila, our fellow Ilonggo who is number one, sitting on top of the summit in the licensure examination with a rating of 89.00%.
He will serve as one exemplar, especially to us here residing in Iloilo that one can transcend the turmoils and adversities, one can outshine thousands no matter how seemingly impossible the odds may seem, with the right balance of determination and perseverance, one can trust that the numbers won’t lie.

ONE: Licensed to Save Lives
by: Ranel Bayona
Although a mere one person cannot suffice the many, each one is a brick of the wall that would collectively build a strong foundation as an allied medical profession to provide a stable and healthy community for our people to live.
Healthcare itself is interconnected like one single point in a constellation where a student that is in the process
of becoming a doctor, while looking out the window, is connecting the dots, figuring out how to be one.
The statistics may hide untold stories of other qualifiers but one by one each of them is glorified to be on the list, giving justice to their struggles, and what matters most are the ripples that will be created, touching each one of our lives with the new set of
medical doctors to restore and improve the quality of several lives.
The Iloilo Doctors’ College of Medicine, on the other hand, is pleased to announce the addition of 56 new doctors who have worked relentlessly to save lives. You have our admiration, MDs! Let’s be inspired, manifest, and continue to strive and maybe you’re the next one.
BOO TO YOU FROM OUR CREW!

Halloween is usually celebrated on October 31, the night before All Saints’ Day. Its roots came from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain where people would dress up and build bonfires to fend off ghosts.
Here in the Philippines, Halloween has become a yearly ritual for Undas, where children typically dress up in their scariest costumes and go door-todoor collecting candy. Over the years, there have been Hallow-
een parties for kids and kids at heart as well.
Through the years, Halloween has evolved into a holiday that includes activities like trick-or-treating, jack-olanterns carving, and costume contests.
Last October 26-28, the entire Iloilo Doctors’ College was filled with hysterical shouts and peals of laughter as the Supreme Student Council celebrated Halloween together with IDCians. The officers stroll around the institution dressed up in their ter-
rifying costumes. They crawled and frightened the students, faculty, and staff to let them discern the Halloween spirit. Instead of demanding candies for trick or treat, they were the ones who gave out something for students to snack on and greeted them with a Happy Halloween.
IDC-SSC also had a fun activity entitled “Did he bail? Ohh, he got a mail” for the victims of ghosting and a photo booth in collaboration with IDC Gazette.
Re-opening of Basic Education Department’s Face-to-Face Classes
By Ayessa Iris Sobremisana
Exuding to the inclination to learn and strive for success, the Iloilo Doctors’ College Basic Education Department once again commenced their face-to-face classes last November 3, 2022.
The dry run was fi rst conducted on October 17, 2022. After 2 years of learning behind the screen, the learners will now be able to savor the in-person interaction with friends and teachers. As we’re amid the pandemic, health protocols are still observed. Wearing of face masks is necessary on school grounds to ensure the safety of everyone inside the campus.
Students will yet again
embrace the journey of going to school fl exing their dashing new uniforms. The perks of waking up in the morning waves its hands as the sun rises for a new day to learn and discover new things.
Not to mention the escalating amount of excitement blooming within them as they fi nally get to feel the hues of a face-to-face class, enriching their minds and soul. It’s the time again to carve memories worth keeping and knowledge worth seeking.
The much-awaited day-today “baon” also comes into the picture as well as the memorable lunch with friends, matched with the latest
“chika” and some random thoughts for the day. Each shared their own stories, even the worst or embarrassing ones that are worth laughing for.
Challenges may transpire as a part of being a student. There are conquests in the mountain as you climb up, but every defeat will build you up, shape every bit of your being, and to furnish you for the battles of the real world out there. In the end, you’ll thrive for all the efforts and sacrifi ces that you’ve made. It’ll be an axe pierced in your heart, but soon, it’ll sculpt you into a person that you aspire to be.
Iloilo City Celebrates Pride Piyesta 2022
By Reyann Roi Ballarta
After the postponement due to the typhoon last October 30, Iloilo Pride Team pushed the celebration of Pride in the City of Love this November 6. The streets were painted with the colors of rainbow as our LGBTQIA+ siblings marched with pride. Pride stands for inclusion despite the diversity. As seen in the colorful and vibrant Pride flag, it includes each and every color representation of different and diverse SOGIESC of each individual. Despite the calls and advocacies in passing the bill that protects and gives them equal rights, this endeavor still gains nothing. For almost four decades of fighting for equal rights, our siblings in the rainbow community are still dedicated and persistent to achieve and bask under their rights as humans.
Inequality is a result of our archaic societal norms that pushes people to think that heterosexuals are the actual and direct creations, and that they are superior to those that are different from the norm. Let us all educate ourselves that homosexuality is as normal as anyone; that their cry for equality is right and just, for their protection and wellbeing.
The celebration of Pride will always remind us to be accepting and be inclusive despite our diversity. The community proudly shouted “Makibeki, ‘wag mashokot” as a call to others that Queer Rights are Human Rights. It is a call to let the society know that we are queer and we are here and real.

cal Technologist in hazmat suit. Jason Araneta, a medical technology intern, designed the shirt itself.
In its forepart, the triangle shows structure represents the three pillar values of an IDCian to to which are Integrity, Dependability, and Compassionate service. It surrounds the microscope that defines that every work and action of a MAGNIFIER presuppose these core values in every aspect.
On the other hand, the Microscope symbolizes the College of Medical Laboratory Science as its function correlates to their name as the “Magnifiers”, and the year 1987 represents the year medical laboratory science was established.
Looking at the posterior part of the shirt, the Medical Technologist in a hazmat suit is seen holding a virus. This symbolizes the risks and hazards a medical laboratory scientist needs to face in order to deliver a well-founded result. It is incorporated in the design to unveil that in every diagnosis there’s an unsung hero behind the microscope.
Meanwhile, the College of Dentistry thereby ranked first, and the College of Physical Therapy ranked second in the said competition.

“I am happy that we won. I am not trying to be boastful or anything, but I am confident with what I am doing because I dedicated it to God. I didn’t feel nervous at all because of my past experiences. We aced it confidently because my partner and I trusted each other’s talent and capabilities.”ani ni Medina.

A CRY FOR A PENNY Editorial
Giving rise in improving domestic production in the country will be able to assist this crisis, as it is suppressed
Decent Internment for a Long-dead Marriage
On the 30th of June 2022, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed himself as the Secretary of Agriculture, simply -- this agency of the government focuses on the country’s public investments, business exports and domestic services, including our food policy and to ensure increased agricultural productivity. Groceries and supermarkets are often crowded, and having a fixed budget for an individual at home isn’t enough to meet expectations in order to save money and spending less, as the prices of goods and our daily essential items continues to skyrocket every month.
According to the latest data of the Philippine Statistics Authority, inflation hastened up from 4.4% in January to 7.7% this October 2022. Although this is the highest recorded figure of inflation for almost 14 years since 2008, it is expected to still accelerate in December 2022 as far as 9.3% and will have substantial probability of increase as late as the first quarter of 2023. As a result, the nation’s citizens can expect continuous price hikes in
welcoming the new year. The uphill of prices cover countless factors to the subject of inflation, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which made fuel prices in gas stations to rise, enabling an upscale transportation fare to passengers and travelers. Aggressive hiking of the US dollar in response to inflation had weakened the Philippine peso, in which it caused the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to push up interest rates to be able to stabilize the peso, as well as, the import of goods and food items are at high costs. The recent sugar crisis has also affected inflation, in terms of sugar being an essential input for most items and drinks in the food industry, as well as, the recent typhoons and natural occurrences had also contributed to this crisis.
inflation can be the cruelest tax and as far can be imposed without legislation. Moreover, individuals who are poor will become poorer, in which they are entitled to have the lowest income household that continues to suffer disproportionately from the current crisis.
in due course of insufficient support and groundwork in enabling to aid the interconnection between the market and farmers, hence, enhancing agricultural supply chains and increasing farm production.
Raising the budget for the Department of Agriculture and other pertinent sections of the
government should be seen as an investment for the nation’s future, that needs to be made earlier and is necessary.
We have seen inflation as the daylight of a mugger present as distress in disguise, and yet it is still the unseen robber for those who have been saved and devalues us all.
As we are witnessing the nation’s inflation is staying elevated for too long and is still expected to exceed in the next few months, citizens of the country should be wary of their actions in facing this crisis; reducing our expenses and starting to invest are some ways to handle it.

countrymen like a cannibal that eats its own kind.
He might not be the child of prophecy referred to by Nostradamus but the serpent that lured the many to bite the apple out of the tree of lies. A hypnotic hiss that washed their hands. A seedling spat by the father grew into a silent sampling, dormant for years, then suddenly appeared into everyone’s backyard declaring itself as a tree everyone can lean on. After tasting the corpulence of greed and corruption. An insatiable desire to devour the thorough being is itching, non-stop, hungry for more. A cannibal running loose in the wild. While the prey and the weak glorify it as their protector, their savior, their hero. Not knowing in the end, it will reap their flesh and feast on their entire blood and nutrition just to satisfy their undying famine of political dynasty feeding the younger generations of Marcoses, an upcoming new set of leaders. Pampering them to be equipped with their usual sly ways.
n a large platter of the hierarchical food web in our country, four canines are ultimately used by the higher tiers to take advantage of the weak, tearing off the fascia of a predator’s prey. Regardless, being apparent behind an unscrupulous person’s smile, do we still tend to neglect what is obviously served on our plate by our unblind date or is it a true symbol of honesty? Is it merely a romantic courtship that enchants the many to believe, set up with an embellished truth, configured to ensnare the uncultivated into misery that they once promised to be a paradise.
Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr. more commonly called BBM charmed more than 31 million Filipino people that led him to become the 17th president of the Republic of the Philippines. The loyalists, crossing one’s fingers and putting the fate of our entire nation once again upon the hands of a Marcos, imbued the entire Philippine archipelago with the tint of red and subdued the power of pink. Now, we will witness how the fangs and power of the new era of the Marcos regime will rule our nation for the next 6 years.
According to the Amnesty International, 70,000 people were jailed, 34,000 were tortured and over 3,200 people or more were allegedly jeopardized under military control within the nine years after Mr Marcos imposed martial law. Some even claimed that the incineration of democracy reached to the extent that the bodies were dumped and found disfigured. To even say this is just an understatement. Targeting poor farmers, journalists who wants to speak the truth, non-conforming religious and political believers, human rights advocate, anti-dictatorship movement etc. All of these allegations in violating the human rights according to the late president
harmed nor massacred. While some in the country is hovered by the shadows of fear and death, his wife Imelda Romualdez Marcos catches the heart of the many through her love for arts. She is deemed pure and mother-like by the followers, always there for her husband’s side. The first lady of the Philippines exemplified by her efforts of utilizing public funds to create lavish buildings which is an alleged political propaganda. Not satisfied, imelda also make way to migrate local inhabitants on an island, approximately 254 families mostly from a tribe. Demanding a zoo, thus Calauit Island Safari Park was made intro reality with numerous exotic animals home to giraffes, zebras, etc, and not only that she owns roughly 1000-3000 shoes alone in her wardrobe not to mention a single piece of her clothing or jewel could feed an entire community while the Philippine economy is on the brink of collapse, the seemingly physical manifestation from the edifice complex may look like it is progressing in the eyes of the deceived and uneducated. Yet the numbers don’t lie, poverty, oppression, corruption had been ubiquitous yet denied under the supposed falsehood of Marcos Decree.
Although Filipinos wanted to witness the Sun from the long history of a taxing dawn of dictatorship. Ironically, they instead dug a deeper tunnel away from the light. Mining beyond the gravels and biting the dusts just to taste a portion of ill-gotten wealth. Buried too deep, upon layered dirt of the thickest lies. A denial from Following the footsteps left by deceit and hoax. Eagerly eavesdropping into the covert underground lies confabulated to rewrite the history. We crowned a child of the cannibal that devoured many of our ancestors’ flesh. Bloodshed everywhere. A father that can kill its own
on the flip side of the coin, the majority of our brothers and sisters might be correct, maybe the 31, 078, 103 Filipinos might be right. Placing their trust on a strong patriarch who knows how to command and is not afraid to use brute force incase of an emergent mishaps. Maybe the perception towards the Marcoses were tarnished by the alleged actions from his father and the partial discernment of the media but as Miriam Defensor Santiago said that the mistakes of the late president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. will not be the sin of BBM. On the contrary, according to an article from The Manila Times authored by Anonio Cotreras parents’ sins are not inherent towards their children. But he stressed that in reality, we do. In a culture where the inheritance of debt of gratitude, even either financial or moral debts, are a legacy by deceased parents to their children. On the other hand, the induced reasoning is too specific to be set side by side from different case to case bases especially on a country level thus, could not suffice to justify the said premise. Should we give Mr. Marcos’ son a chance to prove the other party that they are wrong? Or will our country be doomed forever and be deprived of colors from the hues of an opportunistic pink and a gunshot to the yellow? Or in the end all the colors are gone and soon what is left is a bleeding red with an ambient hint of black and white. Will it really be worth it? We could not deny and suppress that biases are mainstream especially in the media. As citizens of this country let us continue to do what is decent, continue to uphold human rights as eJK and execution were taught unlawful from both religion and school. Eventually, we should always check the facts and be on guard of fake news, assessing our internal biases. Maybe it’s high time to accept that history may not always seem to repeat itself and cannibalism is not always inherent after all.

Divorce is a legal action between a married couple to terminate their marriage. It can be referred to as dissolution of marriage and is basically the legal action that ends marriage. Divorce is a court judgment wherein the court requires grounds or legal reasons. One needs to choose a “grounds’’ for the divorce that fits the situation. it is sufficient that you and your spouse don’t get along anymore and don’t want to be married anymore.
Divorce happens due to several reasons. Divorce courts require grounds to set in judgment. However, there are countries that have no-fault laws that take away the need to find fault. No-fault divorce gives either party the freedom to sue for divorce with only the claim of “irreconcilable differences.” The filing spouse simply claims as grounds for the divorce that the couple could not get along and the marriage has factually broken down.
The Philippines is the only country, aside from the Vatican City, that outlaws absolute divorce. In July 2022, Albay 1st District Representative Edcel Lagman refiled the bill to legalize and reinstate divorce in the country after his similar bill was not acted upon in the 18th Congress. The Catholic hierarchy grants canonical dissolution of marriage while all other Catholic countries recognize absolute divorce in varying degrees of liberality. The bill reinstates divorce because it was practiced by pre-Spanish Filipinos and also during the American era and Japanese occupation. Rep. Lagman further quoted that the Supreme Court has ruled in the case of Te v. Te, that the severance of marriage bond is a decent internment of a long-dead marriage. Annulment is the only solution to divorce in the Philippines. It acts as if a marriage has never taken place. A marriage may be terminated in this fashion if the marriage does not meet all of the legal requirements. The grounds for annulment of marriage must have been existing at the time of marriage. The grounds include lack of parental consent, insanity, fraud, duress, impotence, and serious and incurable sexually tranmissable disease. Annulment is also different from legal separation. Legal separation is a legal remedy for couples suffering from a problematic marriage. The grounds for legal separation may have come after the marriage. Grounds for legal separation includes repeated physical violence, imprisonment for more than 6 years, substance abuse and alcoholism, homosexuality, and sexual infidelity.
Getting a divorce has its advantages and disadvantages. When divorced,
one escaped a violent situation. Your safety and well-being should always be a priority.
Saving yourself from domestic violence is a pro in divorce that has no cons. In addition to this, you will get the freedom to live the life you always want. It is known that marriage can sometimes become impossible to comfortably be committed to each other without giving up some things that might be extremely important to you as an individual. Divorce will open up possibilities for you to live life exactly as you want it without compromise. Lastly, divorce will affect your children, but so does arguing or other experiences within a rocky marriage that your children will have to live with. Children may act naive but they do know what is going on. They may not process it in an adult, mature way but they know when it is right. Divorce has a positive impact on your children. Especially if they no longer have to experience arguing and fighting at home.
Due to the Philippines being a predominantly Christian state that stands to uphold the sanctity of marriage, divorce remains illegal. According to a survey conducted during the 2022 elections, 50% of the respondents stated that they agree and support the divorce bill being passed. This implies that the Filipinos and the country are ready to accept the dissolution of marriage through divorce. Divorce must be legalize, in my sentiments, to help end and eradicate violence against women. In a 2017 survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority, one in four women age 15-49 has experienced physical, emotional, and sexual violence by their husband or partner. Violence against women (VAW) is closely related with the unequal power relations between women and men or “gender-based violence.” Our societal norms and traditions tell people to think that men take a dominant role while women are men’s companions and take a subordinate role. This perception leads men to gain more power over women. Thus, VAW becomes a form of men’s expression of control over women to retain power. Again and again, women and children are the ones that are greatly affected by a dysfunctional marriage.
“I think it is high time to legalize divorce in our country, for the benefit and well-being of women and their children.”
Despite what the religious says, divorce is very much more beneficial to physical, mental, and emotional well-being of those involved, and to achieve a modern, progressive society.
Should our morals be afraid to offend what’s above and a rather obsolete belief? Or should it be more compassionate and sympathetic for our fellow beings that are negatively affected?

Bigotry | Riotry
The Heterosexual Act. 2022 created an avalanche of backlash from the LGBTQIA+ community. It received a lot of attention when it was recently filed by Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. of Manila, 6th District last November 9, 2022. This bill aims to seek “protection” of the “rights of heterosexuals”.
“If, therefore, we seek to ‘grant’ and/or ‘protect’ rights to homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenders and queers in the spirit of justice, equity and fair play, we must also ‘grant’ and/or ‘protect’ rights to heterosexuals who are actual and direct creations of God.”
— Rep. Benny Abante
The idea of fair play appears to look believable at first, when we put a juxtaposition of the same mass at each end of a weighing scale. It means upholding justice and equality assuming the scale would remain balanced regardless interfered with preferential influences such as the religious beliefs of people from a long standing conservative filipino tradition. if only we live in a perfect world maybe it could be applicable when LGBTQIA+ community are not fazed with daily torments, discrimination and fear of showing their true colors beneath their closeted or discrete skin. The premise of Rep. Abante is quite understandable, he aims that if the LGBT community is armored by the law so should the legitimate creations of God. His beliefs are respected but unfortunately, as of now there is still no concrete and functioning law or particular legislative amendment that would directly protect the rights of the LGBT community thus acting as a counter-statement with his words, forfeiting his very idea of fair play and justice, amassing an unfair amount of armor and protection from the already non oppressed, non LGBT community. Although the The Bill of Rights in the 1987 Constitution exists, it is for the rights of the general population regardless of the demographic profile. if only the Senate Bill No. 449 by Senator Robin Padilla, although a big leap and a shock for the Philippine culture. Assuming it was approved and is highly operative, then maybe Rep. Abante could call for his plea for justice against his inexistent claims of injustice. If approved given the status quo, it’s like stripping away all the rights and undressing the scarce clothing of protection the LGBTQ community has. Depriving gay individuals a safe and secure community to dwell, disrupting
Ranel Bayona
their inner peace would result into an upheaval especially in the media and if pushed through to be approved, would be frowned upon by LGBT rights advocate and would rather escalate into a riotry.
A glitch in the matrix has been detected. Linear propulsion of events happens to be distorted in the Philippine space-time continuum. From a quick search in the world wide web, what is the most progressive country in the world would render “Norway”. Interestingly, it has been known that same-sex marriage in Norway had been legal for over a decade since 2009. In spite of this, why can’t a 3rd world country like the Philippines be like Norway in 2022? Are we stuck in 2009 and pretend like it’s 2022? Are we too obsolete to admit that we are antiquated enough? Or are we just summer-salting backwards in time? All of these might be signs that our country is not yet ready to loosen the grip from the old belief system— bigotry at its maximum.
“A massive insult, a spit on the gay pride community by their own country. Law shall be made available for everyone, and must not make one group secluded from it.”
Abante’s call for equity even seemed mixed up with the definition of equality especially when we place it in reality. Regardless, equality, equity, and justice all revolves around the embodiment of the law but instances does not always dwell into a dual-perspective of just gays and straight people alone, rather it is tends to be amorphous since it has external and internal factors that begs for reconsideration. Not all things have a clearly defined shape for one to easily delineate the boundaries between the two since it can be omnidirectional. It cannot be always settled with the idea of the weighing scale of justice, there has to be more than what we are weighing, the belief systems and standpoints of a political power, the things we cannot control like the thought processes of bullies and derogatory individuals (evident from gay hate crimes) that will have more power and dominion over the already weak and out of the league LGBT people.
In addition, based on the logic made by Rep. Abante, can we also
suggest a mandate regarding violence against male and adults? In contrast to violence against women and their children (VAWC). As he implied upon the spirit of justice that both ends shall receive the same rights and protection. in the first place, the reason why the rights were given to women and children is their needy and powerless nature that can easily be emasculated in a world dominated by men. Same goes with the LGBT community, they are continually abused, maltreated, and disrespected. How much more when the other party gains more reason to harm them.
A cinema of same-sex relationship and even marriage had been continuously unfurling and is gradually being accepted or if not tolerated in the country. Local celebrities, vloggers and other influential gay icons are highly impactful in today’s society. They had helped and contributed to our nation, especially changing people’s opinion as to how they perceived gender orientation, slowly opening their doors and widening their tight ally. As time progresses as it normally should, the old film roll stock, that was once vintage, black and white must be transformed into a colorful and digital panorama in today’s era. In an effort to capture a pristine moment with great detail. So, if a caveman’s primitive mind were like sticks and stones would this carry on until the present day? Do you think we will ever create useful machineries and devices? The idea that change is constant and tradition and culture that sheltered us, can make this group feel left out and not included just because these ancient ways are no doubt unparalleled to the normalcy of the progressing years of advancement and innovation. Let’s be like Norway and boycott unreasonable bigot belief systems, maybe this is the route to achieve spontaneous linear progression, a departure from staleness and stubbornness. Things right now are linear, progressing yet unpredictable. Bigotry would normally be frowned upon by today’s society as the LGBTQIA+ community continues to gain the ability to voice out and little by little is being heard. Eventually, insensitive bigotry that fails to recognize human emotions would spark riotry.
“The proposed Heterosexual Act only serves to legitimize the very real oppression experienced by the LGBTQIA Filipinos now.”

The Philippine Paradox: A Sad Truth Behind Press Freedom
Every word we utter and every word we write lies a life-threatening risk as a Filipino journalist. Chained on the power of our political officials, one wrong move, and we end up with bloodied hands. Crimes not committed. Yet, we have blindfolded eyes and sealed mouths. Nobody was harmed. Yet,
We face an unsolicited consequence as we practice our rights and speak for the truth.”
The 1987 Constitution upholds the right of every Filipino to freedom of speech. It is stated in Article III, Section 4 that, “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances”.
Despite the written rights and the power the law holds, the Philippines is still considered one of the deadliest countries in the world for journalists.
Maria Ressa, a well-known journalist, whose name was tied with Inquirer.net and Rappler, faced a conviction for cyber libel and is about to face seven years in prison despite winning the Nobel Prize. Her work was labeled as defamation and criminalized, given under the previous administration, as it gave bad blood towards former president Rodrigo Duterte.
Additionally, Duterte may have contributed to the environment that resulted in the deaths of at least four journalists and the arbitrary detention of numerous others. His violent words

Our societal norms as human beings really pushes the people in a perception that men are supreme beings. They are viewed as tough, as protectors, as providers, and more intelligent than other beings. This also pushes them to believe that they have the right to decide everything about anything. However, this pushes other men in a box that expressing emotions equates to weakness. It pushes them to suppress everything because it is unacceptable and is seen as frailty in our society.
Due to that archaic perception in our society, it pushes men to be rather cruel and well, stupid. They just want everything that feeds their ego, and makes them look good. In terms of sexuality, men should interrogate why they are straight

The recent elections had once again tested the commitment of journalists in providing Filipinos the information they need to chew down upon choosing the deserving candidate. Then again, there are a lot of reported incidents where journalists are banned from campaign events, media-hosted debates, and restricted media access in forums.
The fact the media’s access to covering these events was restricted means that the Filipino people are deprived of the right to access information about these candidates. Aside from that, journalists were also denied by some candidates and tagged as biased as they held presidential interviews –reported to be in chaos as DDoS attacks were seen attacking news websites on the airing of the said interviews.
A DDoS assault aims to overload a web server’s bandwidth or resources by flooding it with numerous traffic requests, which causes the website to load slowly or become inaccessible. According to Republic Act No. 8792, the Electronic Commerce Act, it is a type of unlawful access and interference with a computer system or server, which is prohibited in the Philippines.

or heterosexual. If you think about it, men really hate women. They want to spend as much time as possible with other men. As we observed, everything that a man does is to impress other men. They are more thirsty for other men’s attention than women’s validation. For instance, men pursue women and sex with women to impress other men. They are obsessed with the body counts and the virginity of the woman that they like because they like to compete with other men. They do not really respect women. They do not care what women have to say. They want to listen to other men. They want to see other men win. Men even grab credit for the works of their equal women. If that’s their perception of heterosexuality, that men really love other men, then aren’t their claim to heterosexuality a lie?
Not only in sexuality, men like to have a say, even the final decision,

men in having updates about the current situation of society. Hence, it plays a pivotal role in the mornings of the oldies – along with their coffee and pandesal.
If the said mornings are tainted with misinformation and selective opinion, the people reading and listening to these will be placed in the hands of the abusive officials, whose power was overly used for violence and coercion hence leading to a sickening scenario of manipulation.
Despite the utmost effort exerted by our forefathers in the restoration of democracy, it remains a work in progress in our country. It is beyond dispute that press freedom and democracy go hand in hand. These two are connected and strengthen one another. Although these rights are always in danger, the decision lies in our hands to defend and firmly establish them. The risk of eroding democracy, the threat of tyrannical regimes, and the level of inequality in our communities all rise when press freedom is not protected.
“Without facts, you can’t have the truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without trust, we have no shared reality, and no democracy, and it becomes impossible to deal with our world’s existential problems: climate, coronavirus, and the battle for truth.” -Maria Ressa in her speech at the Nobel Prize.
to things that really don’t affect them. Abortion, for instance, is decided and will be ratified by the Congress—which is composed mostly of men. Our lawmakers rejects to legalize abortion, together with same-sex marriage, divorce, and SOGIE bill. Their reason for this rejection is because they are not acceptable in a “predominantly Catholic” country such as ours. However, if you look it up, there are predominantly Catholic countries that legalizes abortion in their sovereignty. Spain, the country that brought Catholicism to our country, legalizes abortion; but so does Argentina. Colombia, and Italy. Shouldn’t our government pass laws that are beneficial to the people?
Men, not now nor ever, have the right to decide what a woman can do or not do to their body. They have no right to call other people in the LGBTQIA+ community lesser than them. They have no right to use religion in order for them to justify their selfishness and stupidity.

Iloilo Doctors’ College celebrates World Teachers’ Day 2022
“Teaching is more than imparting knowledge; it is inspiring change. Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding.” —
William Arthur Ward
To honor our beloved teachers, Iloilo Doctors’ College commemorated World Teachers’ Day with the theme, “Teachers: Leading in Crisis; Reimagining the Future”, last October 5, 2022, at IDC Nursing Gym.
The celebration started with the Mass of the Holy Spirit which was streamed live through the Iloilo Doctors’ College official Facebook Page.
Right after the mass, the program commenced with the doxology led by Jasper Lloyd Montaño and Elisha Joy Delos Santos,
followed by the singing of the National Anthem and IDC Hymn by Rianna Riza Aspe and Juna Mae Ascura, then Muinelly Marie C. Reyes, President of the IDC Supreme Student Council, gave her opening remarks. A dance number was performed by some iDC-SSC officers to hype up the crowd. Showcasing of talents then followed, which highlighted the inner crafts of teachers by exhibiting their ultimate dance moves in the Student-Teacher Tiktok Collaboration. Then, IDC Supreme Student Council Vice President Joane Marie C. Bravo shared relatable spoken poetry with the audience, touching their hearts and making them laugh.
The Siomai-Siopao-Suman
game put the teachers’ mental alertness to the test and hailed the College of Physical Therapy as the winner.
After that, the designated student leaders from each department expressed their greetings to their professors which then proceeded to the giving of certificates led by Dr. Ma. Lourdes
L. De Leon, President and Chairman of the Board together with Muinelly Marie Reyes.
“We, students, may not always say the word “Salamat”, but when we say it, we really mean it. Kaya, a million “Salamat” to all of you, teachers,” Bravo uttered as the program formally closed.

Mr. Jose Anthony Gerard Muyco graduated from the University of San Agustin with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature. He is now the current adviser of Iloilo Doctors College Gazette Publication.
The words imprinted on the books were also imprinted in the hearts of the readers when the masterpiece named “2020 and other Stories” by Jose Anthony Gerard Muyco was hailed as one of the Top 10 in the Filipino Readers Choice Awards.
We are never completely happy with the results of our efforts. We are constantly convinced that we can do better and that our best masterpiece is yet to be written. The words imprinted on the books were also imprinted in the hearts of the readers when the masterpiece named “2020 and other Stories” by Jose Anthony Gerard Muyco was hailed as one of the Top 10 in the Filipino Readers Choice Awards. The said event was orga-
nized by the Book Development Association of the Philippines in September 2022.
Being chosen for the said event was unexpected to Mr. Muyco when he received a phone call from the organizers, and now as one of the Iloilo Writers who made it to the Top 10, it was a spectacular moment for him. Other Ilonggo writers were chosen including Anna Teresa Slater who wrote the book “A Singular Spectacular
Chore, “Klaro na Masyado” by Geraldo Castillo Galindez, “Pocket Universe” by Martin, “Undelivered Gift” by Hercharme D. Demegillo, and lastly the “Gugma ni Datu Lubay: Mga Daan kag mga Bago na Binalaybay with English Translation” by Alex de los Santos. KasingKasing Press, the book publisher of Iloilo, continues to prove that Ilonggo writers are diligent artists by publishing the best of the best books that would inspire people to read
Jose’s passion never stops since he had written the first poem and book during his college years and now as the passion burns in his heart, through his hands, the masterpieces were born. “No matter who you are, whether you are a teacher, a student, or just a mere individual, you can be the best writer as long as there is something in your heart that screams passion, hard work, and commitment. The first draft of prose is just you telling yourself the stories that can inspire others. To the aspiring writers out there, always paint in mind the quote from Viriginia Woolf, ‘Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written largely in his works.’”
Various groups launched “ML50” to commemorate the 50th year of Martial Law
By : Reyann Roi Ballarta
An alliance forum, “Pagtiriringub Batuk sa Pagbalik sang Diktadurya,” was held as a launching event to commemorate the 50th year since the declaration of Martial Law.
The forum was held in St. Clement’s Church - Redemptorist Iloilo last September 9, 2022.
The forum started with a prayer and singing of the National Anthem, and a welcome remarks by Atty.
Elias Guiloreza, Chairperson of SELDA Panay. Several
speakers also shared their minds during the discussion.
Prof. Tomas Talledo from University of the Philippines - Visayas talked about why Martial Law was declared. The late dictator Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation 1081, declaring Martial Law, due to “insurrections and revolutions.” Prof. Talledo ended his talk through a poem and said, “let’s not be blind men of Indostan.”
The discussion goes on as other individuals share their experiences during
the Martial Law. It was also shared how the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital served as a sanctuary to activists during those times.
The discussion
ends with Jasper Cabra of Western Visayas Youth and Student Alliance’s call to action. Cabra discussed why the son of the dictator came back to power and what the youth can do. Cabra tasked the youth to “combat disinformation, carry forward the fight for justice, fight state terrorism, and build and strengthen democratic mass organizations” under the Marcos-Duterte administration.
The event was attended by various groups including student organizations, labor groups, and NUPL among others. It concluded with the signing of signatures and taking of photos.

IDC Supreme Student Council Leadership Training 2022
By Gianne Marie Borbon
To build camaraderie and unification among the student leaders, the IDC Supreme Student Council, in conjunction with the office of Student/Alumni Affairs, conducted leadership training with the theme “Thriving through a pandemic: Leading community leadership the IDCian way” last August 27-28, 2022 at Mila’s Hill Inland Resort, New Lucena, Iloilo.
The program started with a prayer led by Aizyl Faith Monserate, CMLS Board Member, followed by the opening remarks from the SSC Adviser, Mrs. Bienvenida Hugo. The participants are then tasked to write down their expectations for the said activity.
During the first day, the OSSA facultyled several talks, which enabled the officers to familiarize the school rules and regulations, school services, and graduation awards. In addition, exhilarating games and various group activities promote teamwork and strategy development.
Small group discussion serves as a way for them to connect emotionally, empathize, and get to know their fellow officers. These became a stepping stone for them to deeply discern one’s feelings and perspective in life.
The oath-taking and awarding ceremony was conducted on the second day, and officers received a token for their participation.
To formally close the program, Mr. Nc Luntao, former IDC-SSC president, passed the key of responsibility to Ms. Muinelly Marie Reyes – to officially proclaim her as the newly elected president.
“As a leader, being able to lead the students is very crucial. It shows how effective and efficient you are. Leadership carries a lot of responsibilities. It’s not always about flaunting your fame to others. It’s not about being superior to your colleagues. During the training, I learned that a great leader doesn’t mean you have to be at the top always. A great leader should be focused, reliable, and engage in honest and open communication with his or her team members,” said Joane Marie Bravo, Vice President of IDC-SSC, President of Student Nurses of the Philippines – IDC Chapter, and Editor-in-Chief of IDCian Yearbook.
“I also learned that it’s okay to fail sometimes. But instead of blaming others, leaders should be accountable for the reason why you are there to serve. Because serving your fellow students is more fulfilling and heartwarming than being a leader who did not do anything and was just a leader for the title and fame,” she added.
Transportation at ease!
By Nikki Kim Lim
A school based Sectoral Consultative meeting for the Iloilo City local public transport route plan was held at Iloilo Doctors’ College Nursing gym earlier today Friday August 12. The Public Safety Transportation Management office, headed by Mr. Jeck Conlu, gave outlines on what to expect on the routes, answered most heated questions and presented assurance to the worrying public. It tackled a controversial turn on its first implementation but now is clearing things and breaking misconceptions with a comeback of 24 routes approved by the Department of Transportation ensuring access to all of the residents of the province of Iloilo.
“Rest assured, ang city government magapangita pamaagi na ma accommodate namon tanan kag mapaaprove naton sa DoTr ang tanan naton nga gusto matabo kag mahatag sa aton daily commuters sa aton ciudad-whether taga ciudad ka or taga province ikaw wala na ya gahatag sang kinalain para sa aton riding public,” said Mr. Conlu.
“Pila pa ni ka ride
ang sakyan pakadto sa destinasyon?”
“Ka hassle man ni ya nga sistema”
“Malate na ako sa obra!”
These are words of complaint of local commuters that was discussed in the program which led to the people in the government to find another way for this plan to be more stable. With the initiative of the Supreme Student Council, questions and concerns from student leaders were raised to the PSTMO team before the program ended.
As a return, they responded with safety assurance for our daily commuters in the new normal. “On part of our government, we take in the requests of the people..” said Mr. JV Mabilog, Asst. Department Head of PSTMO.
“Hindi lang ni siya road signs, hindi lang ni siya pedestrian lanes, hindi lang ni siya loading and unloading areas, but we also have to modernize our culture on the road or courtesy to each other or discipline as citizens that also must carry over in terms of modernization.” Added by Atty. Sedfrey Cabaluna, City Councilor.
Mass of the Holy Spirit and Virtual General Orientation
By Gianne Marie Borbon
As the new school year officially began, iloilo Doctors’ College held a mass of the Holy Spirit and a virtual General Orientation program last August 24, 2022, at New Administration Building and live via IDC’s official Facebook Page.
The program started with the singing of the National Anthem and IDC hymn. After that, Dr. Ma. Lourdes L. De Leon, President and Chairman of the Board, delivered her welcome address.
“Today, you undoubtedly have mixed feelings of excitement and anxiety as college is entirely different from high school. Subjects are tougher, more demanding, and more timeconsuming. But at the end of all these, you will gain another family
through your classmates who will become your lifelong friends and teachers who will become your mentors. Most importantly, it will prepare and give you a shot at a wonderful career in the future.”
The program then continued with the presentation of the Board of Directors, Administrative Heads, and Deans. Programs of Study, School Facilities, and School Services were also introduced to the students.
In addition, Muinelly Marie C. Reyes, President of the IDC Supreme Student Council, shared an inspiring message to her fellow IDCians.
“To the whole IDC community, the challenge of transitioning from online learning to limited face-toface classes will be another obstacle we should conquer. And yes, we will. For we will be bigger than this pandemic. Let us not waste another few years living in fear and questioning ourselves. We made it this far, it is through our fuel of determination to properly educated…”
To conclude the program, the IDC Supreme Student Council officers were introduced together with the annual school activities conducted by the institution.
A Warm Welcome to IDCians
By Honey Parreño
The Iloilo Doctors College Supreme Student Council (IDC-SSC) had a kickoff start of their welcome booth for the IDC students during the registration week this August 8-11, held at Gazebo Area – Main Campus. As headed by the IDC-SSC President Muinelly Marie Reyes, this movement aims to help the student body, especially the fi rst years, to have a chance to feel the IDCian school spirit since face-to-face classes were suspended in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The booths took place in front of the Physical Therapy Department and was joined by nine colleges namely the College of Arts and Sciences, Physical Therapy, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Dentistry, Medical Technology, Business and Technology, Radiologic Technology, and Midwifery. The nine student organizations also took part in the event to
exhibit their organization’s core mission and vision. Those nine organizations present were Work Student Organization, Red Cross Youth, SNAP, IDC Psych Society, Peer Facilitator, Biophilia, JSWAP, IDC Gazette and IDCian Yearbook. The participating departments and organizations prepared some unique tokens and freebies such as wallets, alcohol sprays, candies, and pens for everyone who visits their booth. They also offered raffles, games, and activities with prizes for the winners.
“Coming from a 2 year drought with no face-to-face activities, the main purpose of this event is to redefine inclusivity. Personally, I witnessed that we were able to fulfill our purpose today. Let this be a medium of hope as every IDCian feel the school spirit stepping into the new school year.”

The process of attaining what they currently have is difficult. Hence, they strived in their studies, and this difficulty became their driving force in doing so. Failure doesn’t mean that the dream you want to have is not for you. It is just a challenge that makes you stronger and braver in fighting for what you want to achieve.
It is such an honor for the whole IDC community, especially the College of Physical Therapy, to have our newly licensed IDCian Physical Therapists. We are all proud of you!

PASKO NANAMAN! | IDC-BED Holds Face-to-Face
Christmas Party After 2 Years
By Chris Armand Santiana
With the spirit of Christmas burning in the hearts of every IDCian, radiating the light of generosity and love to others shows a true IDCian in heart, mind, and soul.
As the Basic Education Department held its Christmas party face-to-face, it brought joy to every IDCian last December 12-14.
The IDC bazaar was participated in by five colors: Red Perseverance, Orange Exuberance, Yellow Diligence, Blue Excellence, and Green Resilient. They made the firstday extra special by selling pre-loved items, tarot card readings, chains, confession, marriage booth, Christmas Letter delivery, and many more.
Furthermore, jamming from the IDC-BED band made
the Christmas spirit even more enjoyable, facilitated by Sir Jose Anthony Gerard Muyco, his talented students, and the whole IDC-BED singing the song Jopay by Mayonnaise. Moreover, the different teams made an extra effort as they participated in the SayAwit Contest, showing their singing and dancing skills wherein the Orange Exuberance bagged the gold, followed by the Yellow Diligence and the Blue Excellence.
The highlight of this year’s Christmas party celebration is the Mister and Miss Hot and Sexy Santa. With an oozing appeal on stage, Anthony Aivon Heso and Kaila Celiz from the Yellow Diligence brought home the bacon as they gave theirs all from the Production Number to the Modern Santa Attire. Also, the 1st runner-up position was awarded to the Orange Exuberance and the 2nd runner-up to the Red Perseverance.
“As a winner, I guess I would use this platform as Mr. Hot Santa 2022 of IDC to tell students that again, everything happens for a reason. That the sadness, depression,
and disappointment you may feel right now is just a blimp in your life. Being heartbroken is just the phase that you need to experience to make you even stronger. That the resentful feeling that you are experiencing is maybe just what you need for you to be stronger and be the better version of yourself,” Heso said after winning the title. Lastly, the Christmas Party celebration ended with a Disco Extravaganza as the students enjoyed singing and dancing along with one another. The said activity was a one-of-a-kind experience that made every IDCians’ 2022 a blast.
“So everyone, keep in mind that everything happens for a reason, maybe it isn’t your time yet. However, still do try, for greatness awaits through those doors. Due to the IDC’s events and programs. It made me once again try art in my life. I’m so determined that I made my original design of that outfit and I poured my heart and soul into it just to make sure that I would slay that fit of Mr. Hot Santa, and thankfully I did,“ Heso added.
POSADAS SISTERS: The Swimming Prodigies
By John Rey Salazar #TatakIDCian

SPREAD THE WORD!

Safety Practices in Fighting the Forgotten Cholera Outbreak
It only takes one case of cholera to declare an outbreak. Infected water. Unclean hands. Unhealthy practice. These are the common causes why most patients are now suffering from the forgotten outbreak that strikes the world many years ago. A disease that causes tons of fatalities if not responded early. A disease that may infect a thousand people in a glimpse without proper prevention. An infectious disease called cholera.
As of Thursday, Iloilo City suffers from this disease, with almost 300 cases in 77 barangays and counting. As a result of the rectal swab sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, eight cases of cholera have also been confirmed. Due to acute gastroenteritis and cholera outbreak, the city declared a state of calamity regarding water and food-borne diseases.
Dr. Marigold Calsas, the medical coordinator of the iloilo City epidemiology and Surveillance office, stated that there’s an additional 103 cases for August 31 from the 125 cases on August 30 last year. Furthermore, there were 228 in total as of August 31 reports for September 1 were still coming in.
WHAT IS CHOLERA?
According to the article by May Anne Dunkin in WebMD, if left untreated, the infectious disease cholera causes severe watery diarrhea that can cause dehydration and even death. It is carried on by consuming food or water tainted with the Vibrio cholerae bacterium.
Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes this outbreak is typically found in food and water that has been infected by feces from a person who has the infection. Common sources include from the municipal water supplies, street foods, ice water sold by vendors, vegetables grown with water containing human wastes, raw meat caught in polluted waters, consumed contaminated foods, flies, and waste from infected rivers and streams.
After infection, cholera symptoms can appear as quickly as a few hours or up to five days after. Mild symptoms are typical. But occasionally, they can be really serious.
One in twenty infected individuals get severe watery diarrhea and vomiting, which can quickly result in dehydration. Even though many infected individuals may only show minor or no symptoms, they can
nevertheless help the illness spread.
Moreover, signs and symptoms of dehydration include rapid heart rate, low blood pressure, loss of skin elasticity, thirst, and muscle cramps. These symptoms can be a certain indication of dehydration that is needed for an immediate medical response.
You as an individual, can protect yourself, family, and the community by these simple ways like by using only boiled water, water that has undergone chemical disinfection, or bottled water to keep yourself and your family safe. For the following uses, make sure you use bottled, boiled, or chemically sterilized water. On the other hand, there is a vaccine for cholera. However, it must meet the certain requirements that are set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaxchora® (lyophilized CVD 103-HgR), a single-dose live oral cholera vaccine, was recently given FDA approval in the US. Adults 18 to 64 years old who are visiting a region where cholera transmission is still active can now travel with the vaccine, according to a vote by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
HOW’S ILOILO CITY?
The city government has already ordered that all the deep wells that tested positive for coliform and E coli to be closed. Acute gastroenteritis cases detected at water refilling stations that were randomly screened and found to be positive for the bacteria will undergo confirmation tests (AGE).
Executive Order 54, issued on Thursday by Mayor Jerry Treñas, mandates a monthly required water potability test at all water refilling stations by labs recognized by the Department of Health.
“Due to the rapid increase in AGE cases, there is a need to revisit and heighten the sanitary measures, particularly with all the water-refilling stations in the city,” the EO said.
chance the water is
“When the coliform test for water is positive, there is a that conIt acts as a signal. The water is unquestionably contaminated if it tests positive for E. coli,” according to CHo officer in charge Annabelle Tang at the same press conference.
Six water refilling stations were shut down by the local government on Thursday, and three more will be closed on Friday. The inspection gives priority to areas with AGE cases despite the fact that the CHO has registered 252 water replenishment stations.

MONKEYPOX VIRUS
By Nikki Kim Lim
Back in time, where and how?
Human monkeypox was first identified in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a 9-month-old boy in a region where smallpox had been eliminated in 1968. Since then, most cases have been reported from rural, rainforest regions of the Congo Basin, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and human cases have increasingly been reported from across Central and West Africa.
Is it really from monkeys?
To answer the question, monkeypox does not come from monkeys. It’s called monkeypox because it was first isolated from a monkey in Africa, but the reservoir for it is in rodents, specifically rodents in Central and West Africa.
WHAT IS MONKEYPOX?
Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. Monkeypox primarily occurs in Central and West Africa, often in proximity to tropical rainforests, and has been increasingly appearing in urban areas.
How to prevent?
Raising awareness of risk factors and educating people about the measures they can take to reduce exposure to the virus is the main prevention strategy for monkeypox. Scientific studies are now underway to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of vaccination for the prevention and control of monkeypox. Some countries have, or are developing, policies to offer vaccine to persons who may be at risk such as laboratory personnel, rapid
response teams, and health workers.
“Right now, these outbreaks can be stopped!”
-Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region
Give me a sign!
People with monkeypox get a rash that may be located on or near the gentals (penis, testicles, labia, and vagina) or anus (butthole), and could be on other areas like hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.
• The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing.
• The rash can initially look pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy. Other symptoms include:
• Fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, exhaustion, muscle aches and backache, headache, respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)
You may experience all or only a few symptoms
• Sometimes people have flu-like symptoms before the rash.
• Some people get a rash first, followed by the other symptoms.
• others only experience a rash.
How does it spread?
Close or Intimate Contact
Monkeypox can spread to anyone through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including:
Direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox, Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towel), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox, Contact with respiratory secretions. This direct contact can happen during intimate contact, including:
Oral, anal, and vaginal sex or touching the genitals of a person with monkeypox, Hugging, massage, and kissing, Prolonged face-to-face contact, Touching fabrics and objects during sex that were used by a person with monkeypox and that have not been disinfected.

Radiants Hailed as Wild Rift Champions; Guarded their Towers Well
By Ayessa Iris Sobremisana
The blazing fire was burning in the battlefield towards the light of the throne, but the RADIANTS paved their way bearing the crown as the champion for this year’s Wild Rift Competition.
Their radiating flare set fire to the STRATeGISTS in the SEMIFINALS (BeST oF 3), and flourished their lead towards victory in the GRANDFINALS (BEST OF 5) against the unstoppable N-FORCES by ruling in Game 1. However, the N-FORCES arise from their dwelling, striking the RADIANTS in Game 2, but the RADIANTS didn’t falter as they grasp their utmost strength and power, securing the lead until the last two rounds with Joven Jim “RT Bu1” Sangilan, proclaimed as the MVP.
