obody wants

to be history. That’s something saved for tombstones.

It makes writing history a tough assignment, but we’re managing to get a few people to remember the good ol’ days. Personal recollections are a little tougher. There’s that look when you ask a question that says: “I’m today. I live for the moment. I’m not history!” But history is a few seconds ago. We’re in it, making it, and if we let it, history will make us do a better job at whatever we’re doing. We don’t ask often enough a basic question: How will history see my life, my work? IdahoPTV is looking back to another year when the first test pattern came up on screens in an 80-mile radius of Moscow. It was in 1965. In timelines like this one, we’re getting the story told. Idahoptv.org has more of them. Researching and writing the history of Idaho Public Television is an exciting personal journey for me; I’ve worked here before. As a result, I’m having a hard time avoiding biased coverage. It’s a little like being objective about Mom. But with my training as a reporter, I’m keeping some distance from the subject. However, you’ll forgive me if you see a factoid somewhere that exposes my good feelings about the work IdahoPTV is doing. It’s the only television I watch (yes, you caught me). – Royce Williams

‘PLAY AS TIME GOES BY, SAM’ – Ilsa

Even today, some movie nuts can close their eyes and see Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) saying goodbye in the fog with the airplane in the background. She’s leaving to join her husband she thought was dead when she and Rick fell in love. But Rick said: “We’ll always have Paris,” so it wasn’t too sad. Casablanca was one of the hundreds of movies shown on Idaho Public Television from the early 1970s until it became possible to do local programs or to get programs from regional and national public networks. For more than 25 years the films were part of Wednesday night or Saturday night’s television fare for Idahoans. Charlie Chaplin was his funny self in The Great Dictator or Gold Rush. The whole family fell in love with It’s a Wonderful Life, cried with the characters from The Grapes of Wrath, and watched The Third Man, but could never get the theme out of their heads. They were called Movie Classics. Some of them were, of course, but some of them weren’t. Many of the stars of the “classics” are no longer with us, but if one of the celluloid cinematic wonders popped up, we’d all watch it, maybe on the computer…. Or tune-in to the Plus Channel for the All-Star Film Collection Fridays at 7:00/6:00 p.m. MT/PT.
