Ayacucho, or “Home of the Soul,” as seems to be the most appropriate translation for this name so significant in Peru’s history, has during its Easter Season an impressive synthesis of life, hope and its traditional openness to the Christian faith which harmoniously combines the sap of evangelization with the sweetness of the Andean people.

This book is a journey of faith and humanity that does justice to the deep religious experience of Easter in Huamanga. It must be said that this religious festival is a cordial invitation to anyone willing to understand the depth of the men and women of this land and through it the understanding of oneself. Those who come seeking a greater understanding of their personal life experience never leave Ayacucho without learning a bit more of own their human greatness.

This is what demonstrates the great effort, which we see reflected today in Apu Yaya. This book is like one of those altars where the meticulous hands of artisans have represented their experiences for centuries. It is like a large baroque mestizo altar that gathers every detail with remarkable delicacy, from small paraffin flowers that adorn the floats in the various celebrations, to the countless expressions of faith in which everyday life is suspended just for a moment to regain its true meaning for the rest of the year.

I congratulate and thank the editors for this initiative, as well as the artisans and all those who contributed to this wonderful production. I salute my dear brother Archbishop Salvador Piñeiro, Archbishop of Ayacucho, and his Auxiliary Bishop Gabino Miranda. I remember with gratitude the dear and faithful Ayacucho clergy, as well as the many men and women who every year are committed to faithfully keeping the beautiful Christian traditions of this dear people, becoming thus a living testimony of hope.

Ayacucho, “morada del alma”, como parece ser la traducción más adecuada para este nombre tan significativo en la historia del Perú, tiene en su Semana Santa una impresionante síntesis de la vida, de la esperanza y su apertura tradicional a la fe cristiana en la que se combinan armónicamente la savia de la evangelización con la dulzura del hombre andino.

El presente libro es un recorrido de fe y de humanidad que hace justicia a la honda experiencia religiosa de la Semana Santa en Huamanga. Cabe decir que esa misma fiesta religiosa es una cordial invitación a toda persona dispuesta a comprender la hondura del hombre y la mujer de estas tierras y, con ello, a comprenderse a sí mismo. Nadie que vaya buscando una mayor inteligencia de su propia experiencia vital se va de Ayacucho sin haber aprendido un poco más de su propia grandeza humana.

Eso es lo que muestra este gran esfuerzo que hoy vemos plasmado en Apu Yaya. El libro es como uno de esos retablos en los que las meticulosas manos de los artesanos plasman su vida entera desde hace siglos. Es como un gran altar barroco y mestizo que recoge cada detalle con singular delicadeza, desde las pequeñas flores de parafina que adornan las andas de las diversas celebraciones, hasta las multitudinarias expresiones de fe en las que lo cotidiano se suspende un tiempo para recuperar su sentido para el resto del año.

Felicito y agradezco por esta iniciativa a los realizadores, a los artesanos y a todos los que han colaborado en esta maravillosa producción. Peru is a nation that, after years of difficulties, finally looks towards the future with hope. The growth that we have experienced as a country in recent times has made us appreciate even more the vast resources we have. Our geography, our culture, and our people possess immense wealth that must be developed not for short term or selfish goals, but in view of a larger and more generous project to bear fruits of genuine progress.

To look into the future, however, we must first look into the past. Every great project needs this step, which is none other than to take account of our identity. To know and value our traditions is not only a valuable exercise in the preservation of part of our Peru, it is also a condition to grow and advance steadily towards building a stable and safe country filled with confidence in its own abilities and potential.

With this new book, Apu Yaya, a Quechua word meaning “Mighty Lord,” Pacifico Seguros wants to contribute to the dissemination of one of the most important traditions of our nation: Holy Week in Ayacucho. El Perú es una nación que, tras años de dificultades, mira por fin con esperanza el futuro. El crecimiento que hemos experimentado como país en los últimos tiempos nos ha hecho valorar más los inmensos recursos que tenemos.

Nuestra geografía, nuestra cultura, nuestro pueblo, son poseedores de una riqueza inmensa que debe ser desarrollada no en miras de fines inmediatos y poco altruistas, sino en vistas de un proyecto más grande y generoso, que dé frutos de auténtico progreso.

Para mirar hacia el futuro, sin embargo, es necesario mirar primero hacia el pasado. Todo gran proyecto necesita este paso previo, que no es otro que el de tomar conciencia de nuestra identidad. Conocer y valorar nuestras tradiciones más valiosas no es únicamente un ejercicio para preservar una parte de nuestro Perú; es también condición para crecer y avanzar con paso firme hacia la construcción de un país estable, seguro y pleno de confianza en sus capacidades y posibilidades.

Holy Week in Ayacucho is an extraordinary example of the cultural identity of Peru. It reveals the deep religiosity of a people who, over the centuries and often time knocked down by suffering, have managed to always open their horizons to the transcendent. In an environment of color and joy woven with prayer and hope, celebration and meditation, one of the most beautiful and important celebrations in Peru takes place.

This is a very significant celebration in the life of Ayacucho, for which they prepare with great devotion many months in advance. Civil and ecclesiastical authorities, religious orders, devotees and volunteers do their work quietly throughout the year, but it is especially the Ayacucho people who, with open pride for this celebration, await, hope, live and treasure Easter in their hearts.

A significant number of local and foreign tourists enrich the celebrations with their participation. Typical dishes, music, dance, and folk art in its various expressions are wonderful hosts to the pilgrims who come to celebrate these holy days in Ayacucho.

There are different ways to participate: from the devotees attracted by the commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ who follow with deep piety the religious traditions in a spirit of renewal, to local or foreign visitors that make this celebration a fun vacation experience.

If seen quickly and perhaps a bit superficially, the annual celebration of Easter may only be a repetition of gestures, rites and customs but if one is willing to go beyond the expected, you will discover the inexhaustible richness of a tradition that is renewed every year, making it an increasingly unique and unforgettable celebration.

With the desire of showing a beautiful part of the spiritual and artistic heritage of Ayachucho during these days, we entrusted Paul Zink Yi the task of preparing a book, in which, through pictures and short texts, we may discover the real Easter that is hidden beyond the superficial. This is how this book came to be. This is how these pages now invite us to lift our gaze up to Apu Yaya, the “Mighty Lord”.

La Semana Santa en Ayacucho es una extraordinaria muestra de la identidad cultural del Perú. En ella se deja ver la profunda religiosidad de un pueblo que, a lo largo de los siglos y muchas veces golpeado por el sufrimiento, ha sabido sin embargo abrir siempre sus horizontes a lo trascendente. En un ambiente entretejido de color y alegría, de oración y esperanza, de celebración y recogimiento se desarrolla una de las celebraciones más bellas e importantes del Perú.

Se trata de una fiesta muy significativa en la vida de los ayacuchanos, para la que se preparan con gran devoción y con muchos meses de anticipación. Autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas, cofradías y hermandades, devotos y voluntarios realizan silenciosamente su trabajo a lo largo del año. Pero es sobre todo el poblador ayacuchano quien, sin ocultar su orgullo por tan especial celebración, espera, vive y atesora la Semana Santa en su corazón.

Un significativo número de turistas nacionales y extranjeros enriquecen con su participación las celebraciones. Los platos típicos, la música y la danza, el arte popular en sus diversas expresiones son un marco maravilloso de acogida al peregrino que viene a celebrar estos días santos en Ayacucho.

Son diversos, sin embargo, los modos de participación: desde los devotos que atraídos por la conmemoración de la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesucristo siguen con profunda piedad las tradiciones religiosas en espíritu de renovación, hasta los visitantes locales o foráneos que hacen de esta festividad una ocasión de vacaciones y diversión.

Para una mirada rápida y quizá un tanto superficial, la celebración anual de la Semana Santa puede ser solamente la repetición de gestos, ritos y costumbres.

Pero quien está dispuesto a ir más allá de lo inmediato, podrá descubrir allí la riqueza inagotable de una tradición que se renueva año tras año, haciendo de ella cada vez una celebración única e irrepetible.

Ayacucho is a symbol of Peru. Its mix of impressive geography, ancestral traditions and rich culture are an expression of Peru’s past and present. It was in this privileged region of the Peruvian Highlands where the Wari culture flourished, where a link was established between Lima and Cuzco during the Viceroyalty period, and where the definitive battle for Peruvian independence took place. Ayacucho was also the epicenter of a terrible conflict that injured the entire country, the wounds of which have yet to be healed.

Introducción Ayacucho es un símbolo del Perú. En su geografía impresionante, en sus tradiciones ancestrales, en la riqueza de su cultura, confluyen rasgos que expresan al Perú de ayer y de hoy. Fue en esta región privilegiada de la sierra peruana donde floreció la cultura Wari, donde se consolidó el vínculo que unía Lima y Cuzco durante el Virreinato, donde se libró la batalla definitiva para consolidar la Independencia. Everyone in Ayacucho participates in Holy Week, remembering centuries of traditions and the most treasured mysteries of the faith.

This book is, at its heart, an expression of the Peruvian people as one. It is the personal view of someone who comes to this land to try to learn from it, and to show some of the depth of its people, their search for meaning, their religion and faith. It remembers the past of a people that was forged between two worlds under the melting pot of the Gospel. It shows us the present state of a celebration that expresses the identity of a nation coming together to embrace all Peruvians. But Ayacucho, and in particular the celebration of Holy Week, is not only an expression of the past and present. It is also a window into the future. It shows a path, which is none other than that celebrated during Holy Week in Ayacucho, a path of forgiveness and reconciliation, an expression of the motivation and the hope of a people, who deeply rooted in their Identity, somehow, represent all of Peru in their efforts to press forward toward a better tomorrow.

Ayacucho is reached from the coast, across the Libertadores–Wari highway, named in honor of the forces of independence that fought in the Battle of Ayacucho. At 15,500 feet above sea level, it opens a way through the Andes, through the Apacheta inlet. At first glance only the ichu accompanies us on this desolate spot. We stop and listen to the mountain wind and see the moon in the sky, though it’s only three in the afternoon. The landscape then opens our eyes to its grandeur and mystery.

Se llega a Ayacucho, desde la costa, a través de la carretera Libertadores–Wari, llamada así en honor a las fuerzas de independencia que combatieron en la batalla de Ayacucho. A los 4700 msnm se abre un paso entre los Andes, el Abra Apacheta. A primera vista sólo el ichu nos acompaña en este paraje desolado. Nos detenemos y escuchamos el viento de la montaña y vemos a la Luna en el cielo, aunque son las 3 de la tarde. El paisaje nos abre entonces los ojos a la grandeza y el misterio.

Enormous stone walls guard the arrival to Vinchos. They will be with us for some miles. We still have to climb a little higher, moving as dwarfs amongst the huge stones. We will then descend to reach Ayacucho, at almost 9,000 feet above sea level.

Before completing the route we stop to observe the city from above. A stranger comes our way and says a few words to us.

With kindness, and using signs, he points us the way to the city.

Enormes paredes de piedra custodian la llegada a Vinchos. Nos acompañarán durante algunos kilómetros. Aún debemos subir un poco más, avanzando diminutos entre los macizos de piedra. Ya vendrá el descenso hasta llegar a Ayacucho, a casi 2800 msnm. Antes de culminar el recorrido nos detenemos para observar la ciudad desde las alturas. Se nos acerca un hombre a quien no habíamos visto. Con gentileza, y por medio de señas, nos indica la ruta hacia la ciudad.

The main plaza of Ayacucho, better known as Sucre Park, vibrates with vitality. Colonial arcades protect us from the strong sun of the highlands, creating beautiful contrasts of light and shadow. Much activity is perceived, and our attention is drawn to the large number of young people passing through the square.

La Plaza Mayor de Ayacucho, más conocida como Parque Sucre, vibra de vitalidad. Las galerías coloniales protegen del fuerte sol serrano, creando magníficos contrastes de luz y sombra. Se percibe mucha actividad, y nos llama la atención la gran cantidad de jóvenes que transitan por la plaza.

During the day you can find the vendors of the traditional “muyuchi.” An important detail: the kiosks are decorated in the manner typical of Ayacucho altarpieces. To the east is the Pampa of Quinoa. Dominating the landscape is the obelisk erected to commemorate the Battle of Ayacucho, final battle for independence. In the background, the city of Ayacucho lies between the Andes Mountains.

Durante el día se puede encontrar vendedoras del tradicional “muyuchi”. Un detalle significativo: los kioskos están adornados a la manera de los típicos retablos ayacuchanos. Preparación Normalmente la preparación con vistas a la Semana Santa se inicia con el Miércoles de Ceniza, que marca el comienzo de la Cuaresma. Ayacucho, en cambio, se prepara con varios meses de anticipación. Son muchos los arreglos de diversa índole necesarios para la fiesta religiosa, y los primeros preparativos empiezan apenas terminada la Semana Santa anterior. Sin embargo, es a partir de diciembre que se realizan las reuniones más formales, en las que participan las autoridades eclesiásticas y civiles, los mayordomos encargados de algunas procesiones y representantes de las diferentes hermandades.

La Semana Santa, que concluye con el Domingo de Resurrección, se inicia con el Domingo de Ramos. Para los

ayacuchanos, que han estado preparándose para esta celebración desde meses atrás, la fiesta religiosa comienza dos días antes, con la procesión del “Señor de la Agonía”.

Desde la iglesia de La Magdalena, en “Uray Parroquia” — fundada hace más de 400 años— esta primera procesión, preludio de las celebraciones centrales, recorre con fervor las calles ayacuchanas.

Los días de preparación culminan con el inicio de la Semana Santa, el Domingo de Ramos. El pueblo alegre, con palmas tejidas, acompaña a la imagen del Señor desde el templo de Santa Teresa hasta la Catedral, donde se celebra la Misa.

Normally, the preparation for Holy Week begins with Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. Ayacucho, however, prepares several months in advance. There are many different kinds of arrangements necessary for the religious festival, and the first preparations begin just after the conclusion of the previous Easter. However, the more formal meetings begin in December which involves both civil and ecclesiastical authorities, the years’ stewards, and representatives of the brotherhoods, who are responsible for the processions.

Holy Week, which concludes with Easter Sunday, begins on Palm Sunday. For the Ayacucho people, who have been preparing for this event for months, the religious festival begins two days before with the procession of the “Lord of Agony.” From La Magdalena’s Church, “Uray Parish”, founded over 400 years ago, this first procession walks the streets fervently, a prelude to the main celebrations.

The days of preparation culminate with the start of Holy Week, Palm Sunday, when cheerful people with woven palms accompany the image of Jesus from Santa Teresa’s Temple to the Cathedral, where Mass is celebrated.

In front of La Magdalena’s Church, or Uray Parish (the parish “of the lower area”) as it has been called since ancient times, are the plaza and market which share the same name. People are now starting to come together to participate in the initiation of activities.

Concluye la Misa y los fieles van saliendo de la iglesia. Mientras tanto los cargadores llevan el anda del “Señor de la Agonía” desde una de las naves laterales hasta la puerta. Es pesada, pero no puede ser cargada sobre los hombros porque el umbral es bajo. A su paso la gente empieza a congregarse para estar cerca del Señor y rezar.

When the Mass concludes, the faithful filter out of the church. Meanwhile, the carriers lift the “Lord of Agony” float from one of the aisles to the door. It’s heavy, but it cannot be loaded on the shoulders because the threshold is low. Along the way people begin to gather to draw near the Lord and pray.

El “Señor de la Agonía” es seguido por una imagen de la “Virgen Dolorosa”. Quizá por ser la primera es la más concurrida de las procesiones pequeñas. Durante el recorrido los encargados llevan palos largos que utilizan para levantar los cables que atraviesan las calles y permitir así el paso del anda. En cada esquina la procesión se detiene y un grupo de fieles, reunidos en coro, rinden homenaje al Señor y a su Madre.

The “Lord of Agony” is followed by an image of “Our Lady of Sorrows.” Perhaps because it is the first, it is the busiest of the small processions. During the walk, those responsible use long sticks to lift the cables through the streets to allow the passage of the procession. At each corner the procession stops and a group of faithful gather in choir, paying homage to the Lord and His Mother.

Some families of Ayacucho, like the Alarcón (left page) and the Hurtado families (right page), for several generations have maintained the tradition of ornamenters and chandlers. In recent years, electric lighting has also been used in the float.

However, wax candles and ornaments have not been left out, and both families will ensure that their traditions are taken up by new generations.

The preparation of the wax ornaments begins after Christmas and does not end until Easter. The Hurtado family, who for at least thirty years has adorned, along with the help of others, the Easter Sunday float, employs about ten people for this work.

They gather around a pot of melted wax, and then repeatedly dip the molds of corn and flowers, alternating with cold water immersions, so that the wax cools and hardens in layers. Some molds have handles, others do not. To fill them the whole hand is dipped into hot wax. The pain experienced is offered as prayer for various intentions.

La preparación de los adornos de cera comienza después de la Navidad y no termina hasta la Semana Santa. La familia Hurtado, que este año adornará, entre otras, al anda del Domingo de Resurrección, dedica unas diez personas a este trabajo. Se reúnen alrededor de una olla con cera fundida, y ahí sumergen varias veces los moldes de choclos y flores, alternando con inmersiones en agua fría, para que la cera se enfríe y endurezca por capas. Days before, a large number of thorns, about 3 inches long, have been collected from the wild cactus in the vicinity of the city. They will serve to puncture the wax flowers, called cera–huaytas, with metal foil. Then these thorns will also be used to attach the flowers to the float.

De la cabuya, otra cactácea silvestre, crece el tronco que se conoce como maguey, y éste, una madera liviana y blanda, sirve muy bien para la fabricación de las andas, pues además de aligerar la carga, es fácilmente perforado para colocar los adornos de flores y las velas de cera. Esta planta tiene también otros usos. De las hojas maduras se extraen fibras que sirven para hacer cuerdas, las hojas viejas son buenas para una hoguera, y su ceniza encuentra usos en la artesanía de telares.

This versatile plant also has many other uses. Fibers are extracted from the mature leaves and used to make ropes; old leaves are good for fire, and their ash is used in the craft of weaving.

The floats have a wooden frame. The beams that rest on carriers’ shoulders are made of eucalyptus trunks. Usually no padding is added. Smaller frames, made of totora sedge, serve as a structure for placing the cera–huaytas and corn. Canvas covers the sides, adorned with foil cut in the shape of plants and birds, as well as geometric figures, widely used before the Spanish arrived. We are told that the flowers represent offerings from the Ayacucho people, because both the rich and the poor can offer a flower to God. The candles symbolize the faith of the devoted, the corn and the rest of the figures are a symbol of nature coming together to praise God, and man together with all that exists gives glory to the Lord of Creation.

Las andas tienen una estructura sólida de madera. Los travesaños que se apoyan sobre los hombros de los cargadores son fabricados con madera de eucalipto. Por lo general no se les añade almohadilla de ningún tipo. Cascos, hechos de totora, sirven como base para poner las cera–huaytas y los choclos. Lienzos decorados con papel metálico cubren los lados y la parte inferior, adornados con formas de plantas y palomas, además de figuras geométricas, muy utilizadas antes de la llegada de los españoles. Nos explican que las flores representan ofrendas de los ayacuchanos, pues tanto el rico como el pobre pueden ofrecer una flor a Dios. Las velas simbolizan la fe de los fieles. Los choclos y el resto de las figuras son símbolo de la naturaleza que se une en alabanza a Dios. El hombre y todo lo existente dan gloria al Señor de la creación.

The “Lord of Parra” (grapevine), one of the smaller processions, takes place on Saturday and starts at Pampa San Agustin’s Temple. The image is adorned with vines and grapes, and unites families in the area. During the holidays it is common to see students from various schools that document and do projects on the processions. This particular “homework” leads them to actively participate in the procession.

El “Señor de la Parra”, una de las procesiones menores, se realiza el día sábado previo al Domingo de Ramos. La imagen sale del templo de Pampa San Agustín adornada con parras y uvas, y congrega a las familias de la zona. La marcha del anda se detiene en una esquina. Ahí se realizan oraciones o también homenajes con música en quechua y castellano. Mientras tanto los demás fieles esperan pacientes en las calles o en la puerta de sus casas, aguardando el paso de la procesión. Al terminar, en el atrio del templo, los mayordomos, las personas que tienen el encargo anual de organizar la procesión, invitan pan chapla y ponche de maní para combatir el frío. La sencillez está muy unida a la generosidad y a la calurosa acogida.

The float’s march stops at each corner. There, prayers and tributes, such as musical performances in Quechua and Spanish, take place. Meanwhile, some of the faithful wait patiently in the streets or at the door of their homes. After a walk around the Plaza Mayor, the carriers return with the float to Pampa San Agustin’s Church. Upon arrival at the church court, the stewards, those who are in charge of organizing the annual procession, offer “chapla” bread and peanut punch to warm the faithful. Simplicity is part of the generous and warm welcome.

Las madres Carmelitas Descalzas, monjas de clausura, se encargan también del cuidado de dos pollinos, que sólo se usan para llevar la imagen de Cristo y su trono en esta procesión. Los burros son conducidos, no sin resistencia de su parte, a una sala donde los esperan los “apóstoles” para iniciar la procesión.

The image of Christ at his throne, which is kept throughout the year at the Cathedral, is taken down a few days before and is moved to Santa Teresa’s Convent, where it is adorned amongst songs and prayers. The Discalced Carmelite Sisters, who live an enclosed life, are also responsible for the care of two donkeys, which are set aside only to be used to carry the image of Christ and his throne during the procession. The donkeys are led, not without resistance on their part, to a room where the “apostles” await the start of the procession.

y funden en una sola con identidad propia y, sobre todo, en una misma fe. Quizás sea en el “bosque de iglesias” de la ciudad —más de 33— donde se expresa de manera más armónica este mestizaje. El encuentro de culturas no ha sido fácil. La armonía no siempre ha sido perfecta, dando a veces lugar a rupturas y abusos. Pero la unidad ha sabido trascender esas diferencias. Quizá por eso los ayacuchanos tienen un cariño muy especial a la procesión del Miércoles Santo llamada “El Encuentro”, donde se escenifica con las andas el recorrido de Cristo con la Cruz y su reunión, en el camino al Calvario, con San Juan, la Verónica y sobre todo con la Virgen Dolorosa.

Esta procesión es más que una piadosa confluencia de imágenes. Es un encuentro vivo con personas diversas, de distintas edades, condición social, historias personales, que buscan una comunión verdadera y profunda, en la tierra en la que viven, con los demás, consigo mismos, bajo el único Encuentro capaz de reconciliarlos hasta lo más profundo de su corazón.

tities, the Andean and Hispanic base is an essential element. This is best appreciated in the Peruvian Andes, and particularly in Ayacucho. The architecture of the city bears witness to this living synthesis. The attentive visitor will notice how the grid of the city and Hispanic forms are mixed with Andean techniques of stone working, adobe, maguey and ichu — two cultures that embrace and melt into one with its own identity and, above all, one faith. It may be in the “forest of churches” of the city — over 33 — in which this harmonious blend is best expressed.

The meeting of cultures has not always been easy, and harmony has not always been perfect, sometimes giving rise to abuses and breaches, but the result has been able to transcend those differences. Maybe that’s why the Ayacucho people have a very special affection for the Holy Wednesday procession called “The Gathering.” This procession is staged with the passage of Christ carrying the Cross, and his meeting, on the way to Calvary, with St. John, Veronica and especially with the Virgin of Sorrows.

This procession is more than a pious confluence of images. It’s a living gathering of diverse people of different ages, social status, and personal stories looking for a true and profound communion with others, and with themselves in the land where they live, under the only Communion able to reconcile them to the deepest recesses of their hearts.

The image of a bleeding Christ, with his hands tied, is lead by two soldiers. A Christ unjustly condemned, has been given the medal of Supreme Judge, expressing the desire to judge with justice and mercy.

Everyone does what they can. Broom flowers are generally used to add yellow, and bougainvillea for other colors. Not many flowers grow in Ayacucho, which is why dyes with sawdust are used for details. Some extend weaved rugs decorated with other elements. Wheat–like spikes and leaves are also used. Everything is combined with great care and finesse to make these beautiful and colorful shawls.

Cada uno hace lo que puede. Se usan generalmente flores de retama para el color amarillo, y de buganvilias para otros colores. No crecen muchas flores en Ayacucho, por ello se usa aserrín con tintes para los detalles. Algunos extienden telares decorados con otros elementos. También se utilizan espigas y hojas. When the Nazarene float reaches the second corner of the square and heads to the third, the float of the Virgin of Sorrows comes to the first corner, but instead of following the path of Christ, it goes in the opposite direction around the square, so that both floats will come face to face. While the Nazarene remains in place, the Virgin comes to meet him, amidst songs and incense. The carriers then lean the floats toward each other in reverent salute.

Pasión El Jueves Santo no hay procesiones. Todo se concentra en la Eucaristía, en la presencia viva del Señor en medio de su pueblo. Al concluir la Misa, la Hostia consagrada, donde está presente Dios mismo, es expuesta en monumentos previamente elaborados. La gente inunda las calles y participa de una antiquísima tradición: la visita a las siete iglesias para orar y recoger agua bendita para sus hogares.

Los misterios celebrados en la Semana Santa van tomando fuerza y expresan todo su dramatismo y honda carga existencial en la procesión del Viernes de Pasión.

Las calles y la plaza aguardan a oscuras a Cristo Muerto, que sale de la iglesia de Santo Domingo llevado en un féretro de fina madera tallada y vidrio, adornado con flores.

El pueblo, portando velas encendidas, camina detrás del anda. Los devotos van vestidos con ropas negras, de luto. Una cuadra detrás vienen las sahumadoras, junto

al anda de la Virgen Dolorosa, que vestida también de negro acompaña el cuerpo de su Hijo. A diferencia de otras procesiones, no hay cantos, y los devotos avanzan al ritmo pausado de los tambores de la banda. Cristo ha muerto y el pueblo sufre por Él.

En la vida siempre hay dolor y sufrimiento. Dolor y sufrimiento que uno padece y que muchas veces también causa. La miseria, la violencia, el hambre, la enfermedad, el aislamiento, producen heridas físicas, emocionales, psicológicas y espirituales. De esto, Ayacucho ha tenido mucho, quizás demasiado. There are no processions on Holy Thursday. Everything is concentrated on the Eucharist, the living presence of the Lord among his people. At the end of the Mass, the Consecrated Host, where God is present, is exposed in previously created monuments. People flood the streets and participate in an ancient tradition: a visit to seven churches to pray and collect holy water for their homes.

The mysteries celebrated during Holy Week begin taking hold and express all their drama and deep existential burden in the procession of Good Friday. The streets and the plaza await the Dead Christ, which leaves Santo Domingo’s Church in a coffin of fine carved wood and glass, adorned with flowers. The people carry lit candles and walk behind the float. The devotees are dressed in black clothes, and in mourning. One block behind, women carrying censers follow the Virgin of Sorrows, who is also dressed in black, accompanying the body of her Son. Unlike other processions, there is no singing, and the devotees advance at the slow rhythm of the drums. Christ has died and the people suffer for Him. In life there is always pain and suffering. Pain and suffering that one endures and many times also causes. Poverty, violence, hunger, illness, and isolation, produce physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual injuries. Ayacucho has had much of these, perhaps too much. This is why people fervently follow the recumbent Christ. God who suffers like any other, even more than any other, even without having done anything wrong, suffers the evil that others have caused and endures and demonstrates that even the most terrible sin is reconciled by his surrender and love.

After death comes the Resurrection, and Ayacucho awaits Saturday, hopeful and joyous, the triumph of God over sin and death. It’s time to live the teachings of the Master, and this is first shown in acts of solidarity with the needy. This is the “Pascua kanka” (Easter grill), a tradition, which according to some people, has been practiced for more than three centuries, and expresses the solidarity dimension of a faith received and lived. Every Easter ranchers donate cattle to the jail, the hospice, the children’s shelter, and to many others; those who have more give to the needy, so that they too may celebrate Easter with joy breaking the abstinence of Lent and the fast of Good Friday.

Ranchers take this opportunity to demonstrate their beautiful Peruvian Paso horses; they herd the cattle along the 28 de Julio Avenue, and later pass through the Main Square, before reaching their destination. Inside the Cathedral preparations intensify to complete the float of the Risen Lord and have everything ready for the Easter Vigil. At dawn on Sunday morning, a crowd of farmers come down from the Santa Ana Square to carry the float. This is the procession of the common man from the countryside, and those who reach the float first get to carry it. The procession begins with the first rays of light that

Es hora de vivir las enseñanzas del Maestro, y eso se muestra, en primer lugar, en la solidaridad con los más necesitados. Eso es “Pascua kanka”, una tradición, según algunos de más de tres siglos, que expresa la dimensión solidaria de una fe acogida y vivida. Cada Pascua los ganaderos regalan reces para la cárcel, el hospicio y el puericultorio. Regalo de los que más tienen a los más necesitados, para que celebren también con alegría la Pascua, y así rompan la abstinencia de la Cuaresma y el ayuno del Viernes de Pasión.

Los ganaderos aprovechan para lucir sus hermosos caballos de paso ayacuchano, mientras llevan las reses por la avenida 28 de julio, pasando luego por la Plaza Mayor, hasta llegar a su destino. En el interior de la Catedral los preparativos se intensifican a fin de concluir el anda del Señor Resucitado y tener todo listo para la Vigilia Pascual. Ya de madrugada, una muchedumbre de campesinos baja de la plaza Santa Ana para cargar el anda. Ésta es la procesión del hombre sencillo del campo, y carga el anda quien logra llegar a ella. La procesión comenzará con los primeros rayos de luz que iluminan la noche, y terminará, poco des-

pués, coincidiendo con la salida del sol, que se abre paso detrás de las montañas. A pesar de las muchas dificultades por las que han atravesado los ayacuchanos, su religiosidad ha permanecido intacta, o más bien, se ha fortalecido al pasar por el crisol de la pobreza, del aislamiento y de la violencia, de la que han sido víctimas y protagonistas.

Hoy, sin embargo, ciertos excesos en la fiesta parecen diluir el ánimo espiritual que la ha nutrido en tiempos pasados y, quizás, como muchas buenas costumbres, corre el riesgo de perderse ante la superficialidad y la secularización.

Estas mismas dificultades vive todo el Perú, que ante las ilusiones del materialismo, olvida, a veces, su historia, sus tradiciones y su fe. Ayacucho, como su nombre lo indica, es la “morada del alma” del Perú, el rincón de los muertos donde podemos contemplar un pasado grandioso y sufrido, pero que no se queda ahí, sino que nos abre a una dimensión superior que sobrepasa nuestros anhelos más grandes. Es un lugar donde se expresa, de manera particular, lo más profundo y trascendente de la identidad mestiza peruana.

La Semana Santa une a los ayacuchanos, y con su fuerte dinámica reconciliadora, sana las heridas de un pueblo y señala una esperanzadora senda hacia el futuro que desde el corazón de esta tierra se anuncia a toda una nación.

Despite the many difficulties the people of Ayacucho have gone through, their faith has remained intact, or rather, has been strengthened by having gone through the crucible of poverty, isolation and violence, of which they have been both victims and protagonists.

Today, however, certain excesses in the festivities seem to dilute the spiritual motivation that has been nurtured in the past and perhaps, as with many good habits, it is at risk of being lost to superficiality and secularization. These same difficulties are faced throughout Peru. Illusions of materialism cause its people to occasionally forget their history, their traditions and faith.

Ayacucho, as its name indicates, is the “home of the soul” of Peru, the corner of the dead where we see a great and suffered past, but that refuses to dwell there and opens us up to a higher dimension that transcends our most profound aspirations.

It is a place where the deepest and most important Peruvian Mestizo identity is particularly expressed. Holy Week unites the Ayacucho people with its powerful motivation for reconciliation, heals its wounds, points the way to a hopeful path towards the future, and calls out to the entire nation from the heart of this land.

Since Friday morning, the Hurtado family has been working on the float for the Risen Christ. The wax pieces are brought in boxes. A wooden structure is tied with ropes to 45 foot eucalyptus tree trunks.

The float is the right size to pass through the doorway of the Cathedral. The image is mounted on a simple mechanism that allows it to be hidden inside the float to be able to cross the threshold. The candles are attached to sharpened reeds that can be easily nailed to the studs of maguey wood.

The float is about 23 feet high and the Christ advances even taller than the surrounding balconies. Throughout the journey, the sun continues to rise in the Ayacucho morning, and illuminates the procession with its splendor. The float quickly returns to the atrium of the Cathedral. The sun has come out and the people now go home to rest.

El anda mide unos 7 metros de altura y el Resucitado avanza por la plaza más alto que los balcones que lo rodean. A lo largo del recorrido, el sol, que continúa su ascenso en la madrugada ayacuchana, va iluminando con su esplendor la procesión. El anda regresa rápidamente al atrio de la Catedral. Ya salió el sol y la gente se retira a descansar.

The celebrations do not end. People still approach the float to pray the Tuesday after Easter. Only the front of the float remains “dressed” with wax. A group of psychology students celebrate a Mass for the anniversary of their faculty and the opening of a psychology office. When the students leave, the float of the Risen Christ is seen for the last time this year. The next day it will be disassembled and everything that is able, will be reused for next year’s celebrations.

Las celebraciones no acaban. El martes después de la Semana Santa la gente todavía se acerca a orar frente al anda, a la que sólo le queda un frente vestido de cera. Un grupo de estudiantes de psicología celebra con una Misa el aniversario de su facultad y la inauguración de un consultorio de prácticas. Cuando salen los estudiantes se contempla el anda del Resucitado por última vez este año. Al día siguiente será desarmada y se procurará reciclar todo lo que sea posible para las celebraciones del año próximo.
