Dear Parents/Carers The end of term this year seems to have been busier than ever; I’m sure that when you read the newsletter you will be impressed by the wide range of activities and events the school has been involved in. The drive to ensure high standards in examinations and qualifications always comes first but it is refreshing to see that when the exam season ends our pupils and staff are keen to be involved in an array of challenges.

To name just a few: Year 7 excelled in The Lakes this year with ‘climb the mine’ and bush craft being reported as the ‘top rated’ activities. Students have returned from the Normandy trip enthusing about their new found knowledge of this area of France and their ability to converse in French with the locals. The Art department led a trip to London which has resulted in an inspiring display of creativity.

Perhaps the most impressive activities of all have been those involving ‘enterprise’ where student have had the chance to excel on a regional and national scale. You will read in the newsletter about the 41 Year 10 students who have achieved their Bronze IDEA Award and were presented with certificates by the Duke of York and of the outstanding achievement of our national enterprise challenge team who achieved first place in a competition which had over 20,00 entries!

Earlier this week the whole of Key Stage Three plus Year 10 sports leaders were involved in Sports Day; a sports day with an emphasis on participation and ‘having a go’. The team spirit, co-operation, enthusiasm from pupils and staff and excellent organisation by the PE department, not forgetting the weather, all combined to make this another memorable day.

These events and many more bring a busy year to a close. We look forward to a restful Summer holiday and to sharing the celebrations of examination success with our Year 11 and 13 students in August. We are also making plans for another successful year commencing in September and I would like to draw your attention to the changes we have made to the school day, outlined later in the newsletter and to some of the new aspects of our behaviour policy which have also been outlined. Please read these carefully so that you have a clear understanding of expectations and systems in place for September and can help us to maintain high standards.

When OFSTED inspected Brighouse High School in March they commented on the’ sense of togetherness’; I was very proud that this aspect of our school was recognised and will take this opportunity to thank the pupils, staff, governors, families and wider community for their on- going support during 2016-17. Report on Maths sets sizes at Brighouse High School 1. Background In 2016/2017 the four sets in years 8 and 9 changed from an approximate allocation of pupils of 32, 30, 23, 23 to 46, 30, 16, 16. This had two major effects.

Firstly, more of each year group was exposed to the higher level, more demanding content associated with set 1 and secondly, the group sizes for the pupils in lower ability sets was reduced. This decision was not taken lightly and had been discussed within the Maths department, at SMT meetings and then finally was approved by the school’s governing body. S19 and S24 were altered so that there were four rows of thirteen lecture/cinema style seats to provide the required capacity.

2. Initial reaction – pupils and parents The initial reaction was mixed. A few pupil and parent opinions gained coverage both in local and national media. Parents were rightly concerned about the change and perhaps in hindsight the PR exercise should have been pro-active and not reactive. However, this has to be tempered by the fact that out of 180 pupils involved in these sets, the complaints were in single figures and therefore 170+ pupils and their parents/carers were confident that it would not affect progress.

One parent emailed, “It’s encouraging to see the school taking such positive initiatives”, and went on to say of her daughter, “She is enjoying the new environment and that it was me with the concerns!”

3. First few months There was clear adaptation needed from staff to deliver quality lessons to these new groups – differentiation being a clear issue as within each group there is a wider range of ability. Teacher marking was also clearly increased for these groups but the timetable had been written such that no member of the department had more than two lessons per week with these groups, and those that did were generally allocated smaller groups somewhere else for balance. The major concern that was evident was access to the pupils sat in the middle of the classroom. Year 11 prefects (supervised by staff) were used so that any pupil who felt they had an unanswered question in class could seek assistance at any dinner time.

Pupil attitudes also needed changing and a clear message of independence was promoted. Use of online sites for assistance was encouraged and the need to take a better quality set of notes and modelled examples was highlighted as a necessity.

4. Monitoring Early monitoring by SMT and HOD, and also SIP was very positive; this was affirmed when Ofsted came and no problems were seen in observations. As part of the Calderdale cluster the HOD presented to other secondary schools and as

part of this analysed data from tests taken by the large group against the top set from the previous year. The box plots below show that every value is further to the right for the Yr9 set 1 in 2016/17, against the Yr9 set 1 from the previous year which indicates higher marks across all ability ranges in the group. That is, the higher ability pupils scored even more highly and the lowest scoring were still better than their counterparts the previous year.

5. Teacher feedback The preliminary concerns that staff had were the obvious ones – that is, the increased workload due to marking and extra differentiation. Above all though, the concern of access was raised by all staff that responded to a request for this feedback. This has been brought to the headteacher’s attention as a priority and will be resolved over the summer by the addition of some space between the seating so that each pupil can be assisted. The issue of the rooms being specialised and hence fixed was also raised – this did mean far more movement for staff between lessons. Some behaviour for learnng issues have been raised – partly caused by sheer size- which has ordinarily never been an issue with top sets. Staff have been progressive in addressing some of these issues and frontloading has been successful for one of the groups, and may well becom standard policy. Most of the groups have dispayed mature and sensibe behaviour for learning and have shown that they are able to rise to the challenge.

6. Pupil voice Pupils’ opinions have been divided. A majority of the sample asked responded saying that the experience of being taught in a large group was either no different or better. Bizarrely, some responded saying that they didn’t like the experience but that their progress had been better or no different. The main concern mirrored the staff in saying that access was the major hurdle. Suggestions for improvement were mainly to reduce the class sizes back to previous levels.

7. Long term The department will continue with the group size next year, and for continuity the year 9 groups will be taught in year 10, where possible, by those teachers who have already met them. This should ease the settling in time of the groups. It will also provide the opportunity in year 10 for group sizes of around 15 in the less able classes and drive up standards there. We will aim in future for top sets around 40 to 42 pupils but will retain the capacity to increase where slightly larger numbers demonstrate that they are able to cope with to set work. Steps will also be taken during the Summer break to change the layout of rooms slighly so that the rows are shortened and the access issues are addressed. We will continue to monitor the impact of the setting arrangements carefully and welcome ongong feedback. Do please feedback directly to school rather than the press and we will aim to address any concerns. Opinions from teachers, pupils and parents and scrutiny from senior managers, governors and external agencies will of course continue to help to shape change in future years.

GCSE Geography fieldwork In September our Year 11 Geography students will be attending a day’s fieldwork at Salford Quays. This is a popular field destination with our students who will spend a day investigating how the area has changed through regeneration. There are many attractions with ‘The Quays’ including Media City, The Lowry, The Lowry Outlet Mall, Old Trafford and the Imperial War Museum. Students will use a variety of primary data collection techniques including field sketching, questionnaires and Environmental Impact Assessments to assess the success of the regeneration scheme.

In June 2018 our Year 10 students will be visiting Flamborough Head and Hornsea on the Holderness Coast. Flamborough Head provides a fantastic opportunity for our students to investigate how marine processes and geology interact to produce very distinctive coastal landforms such as wave-cut platforms, arches, stacks and stumps. In contrast, Hornsea with its boulder clay erodes rapidly thus many hard engineering structures, such as groynes, have been used there to reduce the rate of erosion. Students at Hornsea investigate the effectiveness of such engineering structures.

A level ARTS trip to London Leaving Brighouse early in the morning the Art, Textile, Photography and Graphics students were ready for a whistle stop tour of as many galleries as we could fit into 2 days. First on the list was the Saatchi Gallery where the interactive exhibition explored the art of the ‘selfie’. It was a real eye opener to everyone how we are beginning to watch the world through the screens on our phones but it also highlighted the amazing photography that can be done. Of course we took our own ‘selfies’ with some of us appearing on the gallery live twitter wall. It was a short walk to the V& A where in total contrast we were taken on a journey of art though time and culture. The last gallery of day one was Tate Modern on the embankment. The students loved seeing, in the flesh, the work of Dali, Van Gogh, Picasso and Warhol to name a few as most of them had only seen their work in books or online. To finish the day we sat and created our own work on the embankment of the London skyline before eating a hearty well earn tea before heading to the YMCA hostel.

Up bright and early the next morning we headed off to Liberty’s of London to see the most famous department store in London where current artists and designers are able to pitch their designs and hopefully have them in the store. The Textiles students loved seeing the work of artist displayed in the haberdashery alongside the materials they were made from. A trip down Carnaby Street, with a detour to choccywoccydoodah and their amazing chocolate art work before heading to the

National Gallery to see the nation’s collection of masters. The highlight here was the amazing tapestry by Chris Offili.

The end of our 2 days ended up at Convent Garden where we enjoyed watching the street performers while having some free time before we headed back to Brighouse.

We had an enjoyable 2 days, if a little tiring, but are already planning London 2018.

Year 7 Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Fun Run

When we were approached by the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, a local charity, and asked to get involved with a ‘Round the World Challenge’ we knew just who to ask………Year 7!

Year 7 accepted the challenge which was to run, skip, hop and even cartwheel (yes that did happen!) as many miles as possible in a PE lesson. The aim was for local schools to accumulate 4,900 miles to reach around the world.

On June 16th during a very sunny PE lesson year 7 showed us just what an amazing year group they are! Everyone participated, including some staff, and ran a half mile course as many times as possible. The atmosphere was fantastic as the whole year came together and really worked hard to run an amazing 316 miles. A special mention for Ned Hughes who ran 4 miles!

The effort and behaviour of all students was exemplary, but their outfits were just something else!

Year 7 presented the hospice with an outstanding total of £1351.85 and learned how this will support and help the children and families in our local area.

The hospice’s mission is to believe in the ‘magic of yes’ and that ‘you can make a difference’….Year 7 proved that they really can make a difference.

Double Win at the National Enterprise Finals!

Congratulations to the year 8 Enterprise team who won the National Enterprise Finals. Following an Enterprise Super Learning Day the winning Brighouse High Team joined over 100 other Key Stage 3 teams on the day to competing in the finals.

The team competed in the first heats all morning and made it to the final 4!

They then had to present their business idea to an arena style hall of over 2,000 people in front of a panel of VIP judges that included Dragons Den star Theo Paphitis.

Fantastically they won, beating over 20,000 key stage 3 students who entered nationally!

Congratulations too to Suzannah Carter, BHS Business teacher who was presented with the Enterprising Teacher of the Year award by Theo Paphitis.

Congratulations to Team members Maisey O'Brien, Holly Mason, Grace Elvidge, Georgia Birch and Rhianna Joseph. Also to Phoebe Lever did lots of preparation but couldn't come go to the final as she was on the Normandy trip The girls were tasked by Alton Towers to come up with a new attraction to support their virtual reality ride Galactica. As well as winning trophies the girls won VIP tickets to the park.

Congratulations to Well Done to the year 9 Enterprise team!

They entered the Peter Jones 'Innov8' Challenge at Kirklees College and came 3rd out of 15 teams.

Teams were set the challenge through the day of running a profitable circus.

Throughout the day they were thrown curve balls to deal with such as lions getting sick and ringmasters being arrested!

Year 10 Super Learning Day – Careers Board Game

In the year 10 Super Learning Day students were tasked with designing and presenting a board game that helped educate year 5 primary school children about jobs and careers Students not only had to design the game but think about important business aspects such as costings to give the whole day a real life and practical focus.

At the end of the Super Learning Day the teams presented their ideas with the best ones selected to develop the game.

The game was then professionally designed by professional illustrators and made into a boxed game ready to take into primary schools.

A group of year 10 students will be taking the finished design into one of our feeder primaries in September.

Duke of York Bronze Award Achievers

For many years people have been familiar with the highly successful Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This year the Duke of York launched a sister scheme with the view to developing enterprise, digital, citizenship and workplace skills in young people.

Brighouse High School was one of the first schools in the country to take part. In total 41 of our students were among the first of 600 students in the country to complete their bronze award.

The palace thanked us for being ‘pioneers’ and the students received their awards from the Duke himself at a special ceremony at Huddersfield University. Well done to all involved!

Congratulations to the year 12 Enterprise Team who enjoyed fantastic success in the Young Enterprise Company Programme. They won the area finals and the county finals to represent West Yorkshire. This is the second consecutive year that a team from Brighouse Sixth Form College have become county champions.

In the Young Enterprise programme students set up and run a business throughout one academic year. Students make all the decisions about their company, from deciding on the company name and product to creating a business plan, managing the company finances, selling to the public at trade fairs to ultimately winding up the company and paying their taxes.

The team came up with the idea of a jobs recruitment website for teens looking for part time work while studying.

They felt that these jobs were hard to find and often by word of mouth. A website to help connect both local employers and teens was a great idea! They set about developing a very professional website after getting advice from an award winning local business, Ink Digital.

The website also included great advice and tips for both employers and teens.

Performing Arts Department Newsletter – Summer 2017 Once again the Performing Arts Department has been a hive of activity this term with many rehearsals, performances, trips and visits. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their contribution and handwork and also thank parents and carers for their continued support.

Miss Venus Head of Performing Arts Music for Youth On Saturday 25th March, Brighouse High School Guitar Ensemble took part in the Music for Youth Festival at Brooksbank High School. The group were hoping to recreate last year’s success of reaching the National Festival in Birmingham.

Under the direction of Patrick Eady, the students performed 3 contrasting pieces; Here Comes The Sun, Carolan’s Welcome and Kitchen Jig. The three pieces showed off the skills of our students and relied on soloists from several students in the ensemble. On top of this, a percussionist was brought in to perform for the final piece, Kitchen Jig, to give it an authentic Celtic feel.

The feedback from the adjudicators was very positive. The main comments talked about how the group could improve and develop as an ensemble by using capos to change the timbre of the instrument but also to begin conducting themselves rather than following Mr Eady. The adjudicators clearly saw lots of potential in the group and they will be looking to take on board these comments at next year’s performance.

In preparation for future performances, the ensemble has already taken on some of this advice by adding Can’t Help Falling in Love to their repertoire. This will be sung and performed on the Ukulele by Bea Badilla (8U), Georgina Munnich (8H() and Katrina Munnich (9I).

This performance showed the very best of the Guitar Ensemble and a huge well done must go to all students and staff for the hours of their own time they have given up to rehearse. The ensemble have been working on some new pieces recently for the Summer Soiree and will enjoy a nice break over Summer and come back in September ready to do it all over again.

It was a pleasure to be able to watch not only the Brighouse High School students but also watch the hundreds of talented young musicians from around Calderdale as they all came together for this fantastic festival.

The Crucible –Theatre Review Towards the end of last term, Brighouse 6th form’s drama students went on a theatre trip to Manchester Opera House to watch the ‘The Crucible’, a play written

by Arthur Miller. As a class we were hoping to be inspired by the techniques the actors used to tell the story.

The is set in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, the town minister, Reverend Parris, discovers his daughter Betty, niece Abigail, and other girls dancing in the forest with his slave Tituba. Betty faints in fright at being discovered, and will not wake. Rumours of witchcraft spread through the town and a crowd gathers at Parris's house while Parris, nervous about his reputation, questions Abigail about what the girls were doing in the forest. Abigail says they were just dancing, though it soon comes out that Tituba was trying to conjure dead spirits.

The play then shows the court scene where the girls work together to accuse John Proctor (who has had an affair with Abigail) and his wife of witchcraft. The play concludes with heartache and execution.

The pay used many Brechtian techniques to convey a more interesting and isolated performance for the audience. Intense lighting and sound was used to highlight key moments of each scene, forcing the audience to think more about the deeper meaning of the play, and its aim to educate people on the fear people had of witchcraft in the 1600’s.

Harley Kinnear Year 12 Primary Visit

The Wind Band at St Chad’s Primary School

Taking the school Wind Band on the annual primary school tour saw the musicians visit St.Chads CE (VA) Primary, St. John’s Clifton CE Primary Academy, St. Andrews Junior and Withinfields Primary. This was an opportunity to introduce instruments to the students and hopefully encourage them to take up an instrument showing what they could be involved in if they were to join us at Brighouse High. The performance started off with a selection from the Disney film ‘Frozen’ with the audiences happily joining in. They were then introduced to the different sections of the wind band with solos and duets provided by the band.

Some of the primary school students got to demonstrate their conducting skills by leading the band in ‘The Great Escape’ whilst others provided additional

percussion lines. The event concluded with a selection of music from ‘Wicked’ and ‘The Blues Brothers’ to make for a very enjoyable day.

Summer Soiree This year’s Summer Soiree took place on Friday 14th July at St Martin’s Church in Brighouse.

Robbie Lumb (Year 13) performed a selection of organ music as the audience made their way to their seats. After the Wind Band opened up the concert with selections from the musical Chicago, Lewis Hitchcock (Year 13) showed off his dexterity on the piano by playing Chopin’s Grande Valse Brillante Op.18 No. 1 Eb major. Amber Quinn (10I) performed her own composition ‘Change for The Better’ whilst Year 10 GCSE music students Oliver Heaton (10R) and Matthew Jordan (10G) changed the style by performing ‘Word Up’ with Matthew singing and playing the drums at the same time. A combined GCSE Ensemble of Robbie Freeman (11E), Eve Hustler (10H), Daniel Miles (10U), Daniel Richer (11G) and Lewis Woodham (11I) performed The Hoosiers ‘Goodbye Mr A’ before Year 8 students Holy Mason (8B) and Lili Osborne (8B) performance a vocal duet ‘Say something’ accompanied by a former student Marcus Mason. Year 13 student Lauren Elsey then performed a jazz saxophone duet with teacher Mrs Atkinson before Jasmin Brook (9H) took on Les Miserables’ ‘Bring Him Home’. The first act finished with the combined staff and student choir called Brighouse High

School Voices, with ‘Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight’ and Bob Chilcott’s ‘Can You Hear Me?’ which included sign language.

The Wind Band opened the second act with a selection of music from ‘Frozen’ with Lily Payton (10B) and Mya Rickett (10G) showing their intricate vocal harmony in Lady Gaga’s ‘Million Reasons’. The Guitar Ensemble performed ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and there were improvised solos in ‘All Blues’ before a performance of ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ which included ukulele performances and singing from Bea Badilla (8U), Georgina Munnich (8H() and Katrina Munnich (9I). Genie Tempest then performed ‘Close To You’ accompanying herself on the piano with GCSE group Amber Quinn (10I), Mya Rickett (10G) and Annabel Wright (10I) creating their own arrangement of Martinez’s ‘Tag, You’re It’ with Annabel accompanying on guitar. Holly Mason (8B) then did a solo rendition of ‘Make You Feel My Love’ with the Wind Band taking on the musical task of performing a selection of numbers from ‘Wicked’. Rebekah Goodchild (11H) played Debussy’s Arabesque No. 1on piano before joining Brighouse High School Voices with ‘Penny Lane’ and Eric Whitacre’s ‘The Seal Lullaby’. Jade McGuire showed off her classical voice by singing Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Pie Jesu’ with the Year 11 GCSE Group consisting of Robbie Freeman (11E), Rebekah Goodchild (11H), Jessica Priestley (11U), Daniel Richer (11G) and Lewis Woodham (11I) playing ‘Castle On The Hill’ by Ed Sheeran. Year 13 students Erin Donald and Callum Macdonald performance a Disney medley before all performers were drawn together with the finale of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis.

It was another successful evening with complete professionalism from all students involved including all the technicians who helped to make sure the microphone levels were set and all the equipment was in the correct place. We are now looking forward to our Winter Soiree on Thursday 14th December.

Calderdale Music Trust

Calderdale Music Trust provides opportunities for children, young people and adults to learn a musical instrument and make music together in their ensembles.

They have many centrally run ensembles in two regional centres including orchestras, bands, guitar groups, folk group, jazz group and a variety of others.

The Music Trust currently support some ensemble work that goes on in school including the guitar ensemble, string group, brass ensemble and keyboard club.

Visiting tutors also provide tuition in Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Guitar,

Piano/keyboard, Percussion and Voice. All instrumental students have worked hard to learn their scales and pieces and performing in front of an examiner isn’t always the easiest experience a musician faces. We look forward to celebrating further exam success next term.

Change of Staff At this end of this term it is with great sadness that we will be saying goodbye to Miss Orme who has worked hard during her time at Brighouse High School and contributed a great deal to the Performing Arts Department.

Miss Orme leaves us having taught Drama and Dance for over fifteen years. She has been a valued member of the department, directing a number of successful productions as well as devising new theatre and teaching Drama and Dance to A Level. Her enthusiasm and support for students of all abilities will be missed and the Performing Arts Department wish her every success in her new venture.

In September we welcome Mrs Harrison who will be joining the Performing Arts Department from St Thomas a Becket Catholic Secondary School teaching Dance and Drama. She already has a Dance trip planned for the GCSE Dance students to see the Rambert Dance Company at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford and is currently planning the choreography for our upcoming production ‘School of Rock’.

The Performing Arts Department would also like to take this opportunity to thank to all the Year 11 and 13 students who are leaving us this year, they’ve made a valuable contribution to the department and we wish them every success in the future.

Performing Arts Enrichment Timetable 2017 – 18 We are in the process of arranging our extra-curricular provision for next year and we have the foundations in place. There will be some additions made and shared with the students in September and school production rehearsals will be added.

Extra-curricular activities are open to all and there is no cost involved.

At the start of September there will be further information in regards to the Music Tour to Germany. This will be open to msuciains from the school ensembles as well as students in the GCSE and Sixth Form music classes.

This will offer a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their performance skills whilst enjoying the beautfuil surrondings of The Rhineland. We hope that as many students as possible will take up this opportunity as previous tours have been a resounding success.

Physical Education With the turn of Easter, the Physical Education Department turned its attention to the Summer curriculum and extra-curricular programme, where we hoped to see the same level of success we had experienced since September in all the various winter sports we had competed in.

Firstly, our Year 9 and Year 10 football squads returned from their annual European Sports Tour, this time taking on the best Villa Real and Valencia had to offer.

The trip was a phenomenal success with the boys undertaking academy training at the home of Villa Real FC getting the opportunity to be coached by their Academy coaches and training alongside the 1st team at their superb training facility. This was sandwiched between our more social activities of bowling, swimming, visiting the Oceanographic Centre, a stadium tour of Villa Real FC and shopping in Valencia but the highlight of the trip were the 4 games against local opposition.

Playing at a stunning local club, the Brighouse boys did not fail to put English football on the map, producing some scintillating performances which the Spanish opposition could not handle, Brighouse High not losing a single one of their 4 matches.

Our Year 9 Netball squad also returned from their Annual Tour to the Isle of Man to take on their counterparts at both Netball and Rounders. A stunning weekend on the island saw the girls record great success in both sports and they also combined their trip with a visit to a high rope centre as well an afternoon on an offroad Segway course. This trip has been running for many years now and we look forward to our return visit in 2018 when our current Year 8’s look to uphold this fantastic sporting tradition

The final Brighouse Run of the academic year was undertaken in the first week after Easter, with all students vying to make history and become the first record holders of this prestigious run. Ben Beverley and Rebecca Udall were to be the victors this year and were duly awarded their respective Brighouse Run Cups at our 5th Annual Sports Ball and will defend their titles in September when we embark on the new academic year.

The football season also came to a close after Easter and our U15 squad took centre stage when they took on Ryburn in the Calderdale Cup Final. A fantastically talented group of young footballers, this squad had maintained an unbeaten record up to this point and did not disappoint in continuing this form, defeating a strong Ryburn squad 4-0 to lift the trophy for the 4th consecutive year. In addition, this squad also won the Calderdale league meaning they did the double for the 2016/17 year and were crowned Team of the Year at our Annual Sports Ball.

The rugby league season also came to ahead, with our Year 7 squad competing in the Calderdale Shield Final against Trinity and our Year 10 squad taking on close rivals Rastrick. The Year 7 boys took to the field first and set the tone for an incredibly successful evening for Brighouse High rugby, with Corey McCormack producing a scintillating display to score 6 tries, helping our newest additions lift the title in their first year. The Year 10 boys then followed suit, in one of the most phenomenal comebacks, fighting back from 4 tries behind at half time to lift the Calderdale Rugby League Cup for 2016/17 season.

Not to be out done, the girls rugby squad finished the season by lifting their second piece of silverware for the season, having already claimed the Yorkshire County Cup. They attended the Kirklees Rugby festival and swept aside all who stood before them to be crowned Kirklees Champions.

Athletics then took centre stage for the rest of the term, with our squads having a particularly busy season this year by competing at the English Schools Championships, West Yorkshire qualifiers, West Yorkshire Championships and the Calderdale Schools Athletics Championships. Highlights included our Year 7 squad claiming Team Bronze at the Calderdale Champs, 10 of our athletes being selected to represent West Yorkshire, Ned Hughes competing at the National Cross-Country Championships, Billie Lambert achieving GB Paralympic recognition and the formulation of the Brighouse High School Athletics

Our extra-curricular programme also continued to be as extensive as ever through the Summer Term, with new additions being added to the existing timetable such as Golf, Tennis along with our traditional strengths of athletics and rounders. Our golf club has been particularly successful, with Year 10 student Charltotte Heath passing on all her expert knowledge after winning the U15 Yorkshire event and also competing at England schoolgirl level with the hope of securing a world ranking this summer.

As always, our rounders teams achieved great success in Calderdale, with Brighouse High School pleased to host all tournaments.

Fielding both A and B teams in each competition, our girls have really been keen to test their skills against local opposition. Our Year 9 and Year 7 teams were the stand-out performers this year, both winning the Calderdale Cup. Our cricketers also had a lot to shout about this season as we fielded our first hard-ball cricket teams in a number of years at the school. Having had an incredibly successful indoor season where we reached the Calderdale Final, hopes were high that we could emulate the same success on the oval.

The U13 and U15 squads were both entered in to National competitions but it was the later of the two which had great success, reaching the area T20 final in their very first season, defeating some very good sides along the way and hopefully starting a strong cricket tradition at Brighouse High School.

Our fundraising efforts also continued in to the Summer term, having raised over ÂŁ500 earlier in the year for the British Heart Foundation, our next aim was to raise as much as we could to support local hospice Forget Me Not. In order to do so we challenged the whole of Year 7 to run 271 miles around our school grounds, the distance of the widest point of the UK. A fantastic Friday afternoon saw a jamboree of colour and fancy dress as Year 7 smashed the challenge given to them, running 364 miles in just over 30 minutes and raising raising over ÂŁ1100 for an incredibly worthwhile cause.

This year we also embarked on the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme, with the aim of increasing the number and range of students who were regularly taking part in PE and School Sport. 2016/17 has been a phenomenally successful year for Brighouse High School with the developments of the PE curriculum and the extensive success we have achieved on a representative level. As such, we were pleased to receive our certification from Sky Sports in acknowledgement of the wonderful year we have had and we look forward to continuing this in future years.

The PE department also had a big presence on the Annual Year 7 Lakes Trip where we took 184 students to experience a week long outward bounds activity programme. The week including climbing to the top of Cat Bells Mountain, climbing a slate mine, bushcraft, kayaking, ghyll scrambling, indoor rock climbing and many more evening activities! Year 7 as always, were an absolute credit to Brighouse High and numerous members of the public from far and wide commented on the exemplary conduct of our students!!!

Our 5th Annual Sport Awards was held on Thursday 13th July to celebrate all the fantastic success we had achieved throughout the year and the night was an enormous triumph, with students and staff alike celebrating late in to the evening.

The final week of term was aptly dedicated to Sports Day, an opportunity for every single student of Brighouse High School to be active, have fun and enjoy the benefits of sport. The sun was shining and the school was an incredible sight of over 1000 students enjoying themselves with friends and staff. 16 sports were on offer during the morning session which then led through to an afternoon of competitive traditional athletics events, each student competing to earn valuable points for their respective house. The final results were unveiled in whole school final assembly by Mrs Cresswell, the House Cup for 2016/17 being awarded to Mercury!

On a final note, I would just like to extend a huge thank you to the parents and carers of all of our students for the support you have given your son/daughter within PE and school sport. It has been a year to remember here at school and that is largely down to the incredible help and support from the fantastic parents/carers of Brighouse High School, absolutely demonstrating our motto of TeamBHS!!!

SUMMER ACTIVITIES IN THE LMH Brighouse Film Club watches ‘ The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’

Brighouse Film Club is based in our Literacy and Media Hub. We were invited to a very special screening of the film adaptation of the bestselling novel, ‘ The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ We were delighted that the book’s author John Boyne joined us for a post-film Q&A and discussion. Students had the opportunity to hear him discuss the award-winning book and asked him questions about his writing process, sources of inspiration and career as a bestselling author.

Calderdale Book Awards After months of reading and reviewing, on Friday 16th June young book lovers from local high schools chose their winner of Calderdale Book of the Year for Teenagers.

The students gathered at a the historical and prestigious Halifax town hall, where they met the authors of the five books shortlisted for the Book of the Year for Teenagers Award 2017. They discussed which was their favourite book and cast their votes.

The winner was 'The Other Alice', by Michelle Harrison and she was awarded with a trophy at the event. The book was chosen from a very strong shortlist, which covered a wide range of genres and styles.

The book awards are now recognised by the UK’s major publishers, and winning the award becomes a significant achievement for the listed authors. Primary and secondary school students in Calderdale have been involved in the book award since 2000, where they’ve each read, discussed and voted on a total of 155 different titles over the 17 years.

- Nelson Mandela Could you write a 5000 word dissertation? This is exactly what our Year 12 students have done as part of their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

The EPQ is a Level 3 course which requires autonomous working and high level research. It gains UCAS points and is really supportive of university applications.

For their academic writing our students chose a wide variety of topics from football hooliganism, medical research on animals, the future of space travel, and questioning if we are misled by charities. This week saw the end of their journey, where they had to deliver a presentation about their findings.

Year 10 Health and Social Care pupils have been exploring how creative and therapeutic activities such as gardening, music, and swimming are used in the provision of early years learning and care support for the elderly.

They have been busy organizing their own creative and therapeutic sessions as part of their Level 2 Btec Unit 12 Coursework. Biscuit decorating was a popular choice, but other activities have been organised including; origami, friendship bracelets and Bingo. A fantastic contribution by all – Well done year 10!

Year 12 students recently went up to Bradley Wood Scout Campsite to take part in Archery and Orienteering. This is all part of their Unit 10 portfolio on Landbased adventurous activities.

A brilliant effort from all – well done to those who achieved a Distinction grade for excellent demonstration of advanced map reading and shooting skills. Some of our students have now achieved their Subsidiary Diploma and are off to University. We wish them the very best of luck in their new venture.

Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) at Brighouse High School Yvonne McGibbon– our new Careers Adviser from C&K Careers from 1st July 2017

Yvonne McGibbon will start her role on Tuesday 4th July 2017. Yvonne is available for a careers drop in for all year groups on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the careers office at Finkil Street.

We wish to thank our Careers Adviser for the last fifteen months Caroline Green, for all the hard work she has done at Brighouse High School. Caroline is now leaving us to take up a new role and although she will be missed as she has been a valuable team member, our good wishes are sent to her.

Caroline has been seeing year 10 students for one to one guidance interviews to allow them to discuss their career ideas and plans for after year 11. Students have been encouraged to research their ideas and prepare for their next steps.

Students are welcome to call in to the careers drop in session in the careers office if they need further help researching their plans and applying for courses. Yvonne will be carrying on this role in September.

FutureJobs Project – Mrs Aitken Next academic year Mrs Aitken will be working as a Consultant with C&K Careers for 2 days a week on this project. FutureJobs is a fully-funded service delivered by aspire-igen, Leeds City Region LEP and the European Social Fund.

Through free in-school events, great work experience placements, enterprise competitions and resource development, the project will help students understand the world of work.

Mrs Aitken is delighted to work with C&K Careers to be part of this exciting new project, delivering IAG sessions, running FutureJobs events and facilitating Work Experience for young people in the areas of Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield.

She will be working closely with industry and other educational professionals to develop resources around the Advanced Manufacturing sector. The aim of the project is to help students across Leeds City Region: -

understand jobs now and in the future  - develop encounters to establish employer expectations  - develop entrepreneurial spirit through self-employment

find pathways to further and higher education

There are three main elements to the project and Mrs Aitken will be involved in resource development and delivery of these resources into 30 schools for the Advanced Manufacturing Sector. Other areas are Digital and Construction.

Year 12 and 13 Careers Appointments Yvonne McGibbon is available to see 6th form students on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons in the 6th form Careers Office. Students can book an appointment with 6th form reception if they would like to discuss their career ideas and future plans.

Year 13 Tutorial – Mrs Aitken Students have been continuing with research into apprenticeships and job opportunities. Mrs Aitken will be teaching Tutorial every Monday Period 3 along with Yvonne McGibbon on a rota basis therefore students can see Mrs Aitken at the start of lunch, for any Information, Advice and Guidance. Appointments could also be booked by email.

L4L Sessions Year 10 students had three sessions for Preparation for Working Life. Mrs Aitken gave presentations on an overview of Careers together with Safeguarding and Health and Safety. Yvonne McGibbon gave a Presentation on an Introduction to Careers and the role of the Careers Adviser. A further session on Apprenticeships will be delivered to the group in September.

THE CAREERS WEBSITE Students in any year group can access The Careers Website to help them with their decisions, whether going on to Further/Higher Education or an Apprenticeship. Students can browse the different job areas to see how they link into subject choices. Links to Apprenticeships, The World of Work and Latest News may have live vacancies to apply for. Higher Education/University Applicants shows the UCAS Website which enables students to research degrees at different Universities. Students can also see if they should take a specific subject to get on the course of their choice in Year 9 and Year 11. Parents are able to access the Careers website at home with their child to help them make these decisions.

Year 7 Super Learning Day On the Wednesday 3rd May, Year 7 students were off timetable and participated in a Super Learning Day One Year 7 student Annabelle Knott, was the winner of a competition prior to the event, to design the front cover of the diary. Annabelle won a ÂŁ10 High Street Voucher and was able to see her design used on the day. Runner up was Billie Jo Wood.

Throughout the day students were able to develop skills that employers value in the workplace for example communication skills and teamwork. Feedback from the day has been excellent with the day filled with lots of fun activities.

Decisions at 18! Conference 26th-28th June 2017 Students were off timetable for a 3-day Conference. A group of students who are looking for apprenticeships at the end of Year 13 included the following programme: Interview preparation Team Building Activities with the RAF Motivation Skills by Martin Haigh from Lattitude7 Apprenticeship Presentations – Martin Jenkins from the Textile Centre of Excellence, Will Clarke, ICT Technician, Brighouse High School, Sarah Albone and Isaac Banfield from Highways England Interview Skills with Employers STA Travel – Helen Thorne, Gap Year presentation We are very grateful for the time given by Employers to support our Conference and the students benefitted a great deal from their involvement in the Event.

Work Experience 10th – 14th July 2017 All Year 12 students went out on work experience in July 2017 which is a compulsory requirement of their course. Our Sixth Form students made the contact to arrange their work experience by sending in a CV and/or going through an interview process to gain a placement. The paperwork and co-ordination of the placements was then organised by Heidi Haigh, Clerical Assistant for IAG. All placements require Health & Safety checks and we work with C&K Careers in this regard.

The comments we received after another successful work experience week from both students and employers were overwhelmingly positive. Placements were secured in solicitors, schools, hospitals, engineers, accountancy and charity organisations to name just a few. Many students travelled to Leeds or Manchester each day and some gained a week in London. A couple of students took part in a month long National Citizenship placement!

To support students with both UCAS and employment/apprenticeship applications we encourage students to work in an area that they are interested in and part of their future ‘During the course of this week I have been doing my work experience at All Saints Catholic College, working in the religious studies department. Over the week I have been helping out with my GCSE teacher, Mrs Horsfield, I have been helping with the running of the classes and getting to know how a faith school is run. Throughout my time I have helped not just within in the class but also supervising over the sports day and doing break duty. I have really enjoyed my time and hopefully will be doing another week next year and would love to thank everyone in the RS department and the college for making me feel so welcome.

But a special thank you to Mrs Horsfield for having me in her class and making my experience the best.’

Religious Education Dear Parent/Guardian, You will be aware that all Brighouse High School pupils sit a GCSE in Religious Education at the end of Year 11. This is a course that encompasses the teaching of two key world religions and four thematic study units. To support your child in achieving his/her target grade in GCSE RS, he/she will be given a summer homework booklet that covers one of the thematic units, Relationships and the Family. This work is an essential part of the course. All pupils will be expected to complete this work over the summer and to bring their completed booklets to their first year 11 RS lesson in September.

If your child misplaces or loses the booklet, he/she can access another copy on Google Classroom and/or through his/her email.

Sixth Form Politics day trip to London.

This was my first ever visit to London and it is fair to say that I did have some anxiety about what it would be like. However, this was dispelled upon arrival. The first place we visited was Covent Garden and it was spectacular. An amazing site that that been modernised, however its legacy as a market still stood. It was also my first ever time witnessing a live Opera busker. She was fantastic and left me wanting to visit a full opera. It was also at this point in the trip I realised that I was going to avoid going to the lavatory as there was a 30p charge and I don’t believe in paying to have access to a basic human right. We then wandered further on where we visited Somerset House to see the fountains. Moving on from this we then crossed a large bridge which gave us an indication into the sheer size of the cities of London and Westminster. From here we could see the financial district, St Pauls, parliament and the various ministry buildings. I questioned why parliament was covered in scaffold to which I was told due to its age it was falling apart! Not being a politics student I had very little knowledge about how the Parliament worked, however, due to the fabulous politics and law students my questions were all answered. We stood in the spot where the news is often presented and the spot where Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament. We walked past Westminster Abbey across parliament square, avoiding the demonstrations and on to the Supreme Court, the most memorable part of the trip for me. This grand building is open to the public so we went in. The standard security applied like it does at airports; remove belts, no sharp objects. I went through the scanner fine, my bag however, did not. I had been lazy the night before and forgot to remove my pencil cases. Security indicated to his co-worker that there was scissors in my bag which seriously confused me at the time as I had forgotten that my pencil cases were in my bag. In a frantic panic trying to uphold my pants to keep my dignity and prevent my trousers falling to my ankles.

Mr Bell then informed us that we may be able to sit in on a case, so he went and asked and came back with news that we could. This was fantastic as I love the atmosphere of being in a courtroom. The case concerned who was liable for the £2 million ransom paid to Somali pirates. We then walked past Mrs May’s house,

Number 10 Downing Street, and on to Trafalgar Square to which I had no idea about, as history student this was embarrassing. Our next place was to be Camden Market the journey there was an interesting one. Camden was a world of its own, being predominately what some might coin “hippy”, I was amazed. Been a fussy eater I wished to find something English however this was near impossible, so it was a packet of crisps for lunch. The market smelt of incense and was full of crazy stalls; I remember walking into an funky furniture shop and hearing the women in her 80’s looking all “hippy” scream “No pictures” this prompted us to scuttle out and go sit for some respite from all the walking. We then walked through a very pretty park up to Primrose Hill where we got another amazing view of the city. After this time was running out so we decided to head back to the station. Here was all ate and conversed about the day to then board the train home. I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone for having me and making the day extremely enjoyable.

The positives need to outweigh the negatives in e-safety education: The best outcome regarding e-safety incidents, cyber bullying and online harassment with school-aged children is always to persuade the pupils to see the consequences of their actions and remove the material of their own accord. It is important to promote positive digital citizenship and ensure that children treat peers with respect.

Much better outcomes are seen when children decide for themselves what is and is not appropriate and self-regulate their actions. Schools and parents have a huge role to play in providing this guidance first, rather than imposing rigid rules and sanctions as an initial measure.

Minimum age limits: Most social networking sites and apps are based in the US and under privacy laws in this country, you have to be 13 years old to register. There is no legal violation if you use these sites or Apps, if you are under 13. The only rule you are breaking is the terms and conditions set up by company that owns the site or App. Many children and young people have become savvy to this and use sites below the age of 13. The important issue around this is that they can then put themselves in potential danger as predators can target them when using this sites/Apps. With the development of video streaming and photo Apps, children need to be aware of the pitfalls Also, parents need to be aware of back channeling which is when conversations take place along side an activity e.g. playing video games.

Six out of 10 teenagers say they have been asked for sexual images or videos 40% said they had created a sexual image or video, and about a quarter said they had sent one to someone else by text.

Of those who had sent an image or video to someone else by text, 58% said the image had been sent to a boyfriend or girlfriend, but a third said they had sent it to someone they knew online but had never met.

About 15% said they had sent the material to a stranger.

Of those who said they had sent a photo to someone, 20% said it had then been shared with other people, while 28% said they did not know if their picture had been shared with anyone else.

More than half (53%) of those questioned said they had received a sexual photo or video, a third of whom had received it from a stranger.

One in six 12-15s and one in ten 8-11s who go online say they have seen something online in the past year that was worrying, nasty or offensive Three in ten 12-15s (28%) said they knew of someone who had had any of a range of negative experiences asked about, including online/mobile contact or conduct, in the past year.

Around one in 12 12-15s (8%) say they have been contacted online by someone they do not know and one in eight (13%) know someone this has happened to.

Two per cent say they have seen something of a sexual nature, either online or on their mobile phone, rising to 5% saying they know someone this has happened to.

Only one in ten 8-11s and 12-15s say they have personally experienced any kind of bullying in the past 12 months, including face to face.

Some older children (12-15s) do have knowledge of potentially risky behaviours, for example one-third of Internet users know how to delete their browsing history.

Point out that your child should always consider what an employer or partner might be able to find about them on Google in 5 to 10 years’ time.

Avoid replying to junk, spam or phishing emails, or opening attachments which might contain viruses or malware.

Make sure that children become better critical thinkers and can evaluate content on the Internet such as propaganda.

Ensure your child does not meet up with online friends.

Creating a positive environment where your child can be open and inquisitive and feel confident discussing their online experiences, whether positive or negative.

Teach your children how to block and report any behaviour or content which makes them feel uncomfortable.

Minor sickness and School attendance.

A guide for parents/carers Introduction Brighouse High School is proud of its student’s attendance and punctuality. Good attendance and punctuality supports good progress and achievement.

Outlined below are some of the reasons why full attendance is important.

Why is high attendance important to my child's education?

As a parent/carer you want the best for your children. Having a good education is an important factor in opening up more opportunities in adult life.

Did you know that:  A child who is absent a day of school per week misses an equivalent of two years of their school life.  90% of young people with absence rates below 85% fail to achieve five or more good grades of GCSE and around one third achieve no GCSEs at all.  Poor examination results limit young people’s options and poor attendance suggests to colleges and employers that these students are unreliable.  Poor school attendance is also closely associated with crime a quarter of school age offenders have truanted repeatedly.  At least 1 million children take at least one half day off a year without permission.  7.5 million School days are missed each year through unauthorised absence.

All absence at any stage leads to gaps in your child’s learning. This in turn can:  Mean that they fall behind in work.  Affect their motivation.  Affect their enjoyment of learning.  Lead to poor behaviour.  Affect their desire to attend school regularly.  Affect their confidence in school.  Mean they miss out on the social life of school and extra-curricular opportunities and experiences.  Affect their ability to have or keep friendships.

Recording your child’s attendance Schools must take an attendance register twice a day, which is a legal document that is kept for five years. Any absences will be recorded with a specific code depending on the type of absence.



Absences fall into two main categories: Authorised – those which schools can give you permission for

        

Unauthorised – those which they will not.

Examples of absences which the school is unlikely to authorise can include: Sickness of a parent, or other family member Inadequate clothing for school Child being used as a carer Problems with transport Non-urgent medical treatment School refusal or truancy Days off for birthdays, shopping trips Family holiday since new regulations came in September 2013.

Some common rules about illness absences Minor illness If your child is unwell on a school day, always contact the school in the morning to let staff know.

Longer-term absence If your child is absent from school for three or more days, or is often absent for short spells, Brighouse High School staff may ask you to present a doctor’s note to verify the reason for the absence. A letter from a parent/carer is needed when • a child has any condition requiring hospital or surgical care; • the child returns to school with a cast or stitches; • the child needs restricted PE lessons for more than three consecutive days.

If your child has seen their GP or been to hospital, please follow the recommendation of the doctor on when your child can return to school.

When a Parent or Sibling is Ill You should make alternate arrangements to get any well children to school. Family illness is not usually considered a good reason for school absence. Please discuss any difficulties with the school as they may be able to offer support.

Punctuality Establishing good habits is important. Ensure that your child goes to bed early as lack of sleep will affect his/her ability to function in the morning, leading to lateness.

Medical appointments Where possible, please arrange doctors’, dentists’, opticians’ appointments outside of school hours. If this is not possible, your child should attend school for the remainder of the day.

Medication in School Your child does not need to be kept at home, just because they are taking medication. If your child needs to take prescribed medication during the school day, please talk to the school staff about this. Each school will have a policy for management and administration of medicines.

Common sense Use this when deciding whether your child needs to stay at home. Work on the basis that sick children belong at home and well children belong in class! Please remember that early morning aches often pass, so don’t keep your child at home “just in case” when he or she could be learning in class. If you are not sure, check the guidance in this leaflet. For further advice, you could talk to a member of the staff, your GP surgery or NHS 111.

Your contact details Please make sure that the school has these up to date. It is important that staff can contact you during the day if your child is not well enough to stay in school.

If your child needs a leave of absence you must ask for permission in advance. The Headteacher can only approve the absence if she views them to be exceptional reasons. The Headteacher also decides on the number of days to authorise or unauthorise. You can request a leave of absence form from your school.

Brighouse High School will be carrying out home visits to students whose attendance is deemed as below 90%. Please be aware you may be visited by a member of staff at home to discuss your child’s attendance/ absence.

Advice on “Is my child well enough to go to school?”

Your child should only be kept away from school if they have an infectious illness, need care during school hours that cannot be carried out in school or are not able to cope with lessons. Many children experience common ailments from time to time.

Most of these do not need a prescription, are rarely serious, do not require a visit to your doctor and do not require time away from school. Often treating your child’s illness yourself, or with advice and medicines from your pharmacist, can be the quickest and easiest way to deal with it.

Brighouse High School may not agree to authorise your child’s absence for minor illnesses and you have a duty to ensure your child is not absent where this can be avoided.

High temperature If your child looks or feels shivery or is unusually cold or hot, he or she may have a high temperature. There may be various reasons for this. A child with a high temperature should not be in school. However after feeling and looking better for 24 hours, a child should be able to return to school.

Cold and cough A slight cold and a cough does not disable a child from attending school. However children with heavy colds or persistent coughs should stay at home. A child whose cough is disappearing and who is feeling better should return to school.

Sore Throat If your child complains of a slight sore throat and has no other symptoms they are fit to go to school. If the sore throat occurs with a raised temperature, they need to stay at home.

Rashes A rash could be the first sign of one of childhood’s many illnesses, such as chicken pox or measles. The rash or spots may cover the entire body or appear in only one area. Do not send a child to school with an unexplained rash or skin eruption until you have contacted NHS 111 or your GP surgery for advice.

Minor aches and pains A child with persistent toothache should see a dentist without delay and one with earache should see a doctor without delay. A child whose only complaint is a minor headache does not usually need to be kept at home.

Vomiting and diarrhoea If vomiting occurs, your child should stay at home until he or she can keep food down. A child with diarrhoea should also be kept at home. If your child does not improve as you expect, contact NHS 111 or your GP surgery for advice. NHS advice is that you should stay off school for 48 hours following vomiting.

Raised Temperature (fever) If your child is shivery or feels hot, they may have a raised temperature. This may be due to a variety of reasons. If your child has a raised temperature (over 37.5˚C), they should not be in school. It is important to measure the temperature accurately with an appropriate thermometer.

However your child should be able to return to school once they feel and look better.

Toothache, headache or stomach ache If your child has a persistent tooth or ear ache, they need to see a dentist or doctor without delay.

If the only complaint is slight headache, your child will not usually need to be kept at home.

If your child complains of repeated mild stomach ache, headache or other symptoms and does not want to attend school, this could be due to your child being unhappy at school e.g. bullying or finding school work difficult. Speak to staff to discuss this and find ways of dealing with it.

General information Please remember that early morning aches and pains pass, so don’t keep your child at home ‘just in case’ when they could be learning in class.

When you send your child to school with minor aches or pains, tell the school staff and they will phone you if your child continues to have symptoms.

Family holidays/school holidays Children have 13 weeks annual holiday from school and school holiday dates are published well in advance online. As such, all parents/carers are expected to plan and take their family holidays at this time so as not to disrupt their children’s education. Education law states that parents do not have a right to take their child out of school for a holiday during term time. Only in exceptional circumstances may the Headteacher grant permission for leave; and it is the Headteacher’s decision on whether the absence is exceptional and how many days to approve. When you take your child out of school during term time for a holiday this is likely to be recorded as an unauthorised absence and can lead to a fine. School also has a policy of excluding pupils who have unauthorised absence from any term time rewards trips which take place in the academic year of the unauthorised absence.

Transition and Beyond – Emotional Well-being Information Events for Parents and Carers Brighouse High school have organised a series of awareness raising meetings for Parents/Carers on Emotional Health topics.

The first event on Wednesday 28th September 2016 was an information fair for new Year 7 Parents/Carers on Emotional Health & Well-being. Its aim was to raise awareness of local agencies that support young people’s emotional well-being.

There were representatives from the following agencies: - Community Police Support, Barnardo’s BEAMS, Lifeline, PACE and local youth agencies. Brighouse High School Council had student representatives who outlined to parents/carers their project work on supporting other young people with their emotional needs, e.g. stress and homework.

The second event on Bullying was held during Anti bullying week. The meeting was delivered by Mrs Naylor and Ms Wardle who discussed indicators of bullying, how home can support young people and where victims of bullying can get help. Ms Wardle went through all the different types of support in school and the bullying policy. Below is an outline of our policy and support mechanisms.

Mobile Phone Policy – REMINDER Students are permitted to bring phones to school but they must be switched off and kept in bags or lockers unless teachers specifically ask their class to use a mobile phone for learning purposes.

Anyone seen with a phone out during the school day will have it confiscated and held in the school office until the end of the day. If it is a second offence parents must then collect the device.

If your child needs to contact you for any reason they will be able to do so at the school office or with permission from a member of staff.

The policy has been established in an attempt to reduce the number of mobile phone technology and social media related incidents and to emphasise that during the school day we expect pupils to focus on academic work, extracurricular work and face to face social interaction. Many schools locally and nationally are adapting similar policies successfully and we look forward to the co-operate of pupils and their families in this matter.

Please note that if you allow your son or daughter to bring a mobile phone to school, this is at your own risk and any loss or theft of the device would not be covered by the school policy.

Detention System 2017 – 2018 After consultation with our student council and feedback from all staff, we will be introducing a new detention system from September.

The new centralised system will have a staged approach based on the number of detentions a pupil accumulates within a school week. The new system will replace all existing detentions.

Under the new system students will be informed of a scheduled detention on a Monday, followed by a text home.

Midday Supervisor 5 hrs 25 minutes per week – term time only Salary APT&C Scale 1 Point 6-8 (£7.78 per hour)

Required from September 2017 to supervise students during the busy lunchtime period. 12:15pm to 1:20pm Monday to Friday, term time only. A free lunch will be provided.
