With a robust North American economy and a backlog of demand in residential and commercial sectors, the industry appears to be poised for strong growth in the year ahead. The leveling of sales and pent up demand has been mostly due to an insufficient number of installers now being addressed with workforce development programs ICPI members can use locally. A popular series of continuing education courses for design professionals hosted on AEC Daily expanded from three to six in the fourth quarter of 2019. With active promotion of courses by AEC Daily and ICPI, those taking the courses grew from July to December to an impressive 1,209.

New @hardscapingis Campaign Launches at HNA. Featuring social media messages and video content geared to the interests of 17-20-year-olds and their parents, this new campaign immediately created a following including 1,725 downloads of parent guides within the first three months.

ICPI engages 49 instructors from 43 schools (21 postsecondary, 22 secondary) have attended Academic Instructor Training courses and signed licensing agreements to teach the Concrete Paver Installer course to students at their institutions. A plan is in place to have trained a total of 80 instructors by the end of FY20.

Promotional partnerships are an important contributor to the success of our workforce development programs. ICPI’s cooperative agreements with National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) and National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) provide our industry with valuable resources to promote hardscape careers.

Most recently, ICPI and our partners launched a social media awareness campaign that very effectively promotes career opportunities in the hardscape industry. The campaign features individually branded pages on Facebook and Instagram encouraging contractors to share

She wanted me to have options and no regrets‌ I sold my books and was able to get most of my money back from the first semester. ICPI completed translations of the Concrete Paver Installer course into Spanish and French, enabling more installers in North America to participate in its premier course. In addition to a strong commitment from paver producers in Québec to promote Frenchlanguage courses, ICPI is preparing to launch a Spanish-language Concrete Paver Installer course as an online video in Spring 2020.

Partnership with ProctorU. An integral component to online learning, proctored testing helps maintain the integrity of ICPI’s certification program by providing secure testing environments. Students can complete exam retakes using this service, eliminating the need for travel to an in-person course to take an exam often many months after completing the course. Additionally, Spanish Concrete Paver Installer course participants will be required to use this service as well.

Recently Funded Projects Developing Deflection Acceptance Criteria for Compacted, Open-graded Aggregate Bases for Permeable Pavements Using Lightweight Deflectometers (LWDs)—Oklahoma State University Quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) of unbound aggregate layer construction in pavements has traditionally been based on measuring density using a nuclear density gauge. Measuring density of open-graded bases for permeable pavements, however, is next to impossible as results are highly variable. This research addresses the need for developing compaction specifications based on deflection criteria measured with an LWD, a technology in existence since the 1980s.

This cutting-edge work follows recent development of LWD protocols and an AASHTO provisional specification for deflection measurements on compacted subgrade soils and dense-graded bases. Several state departments of transportation in the US (e.g. Florida, Indiana and Minnesota) have adopted compaction control specifications for these

materials using LWDs. The trend toward using LWDs among other state DOTs is growing due to the inexpensive and fast nature of the tests. This research will model and conduct full-scale tests on a number of open-graded base structures and develop specifications for deflection-based compaction control.

Work includes a literature review, laboratory tests, field testing, numerical modeling and a compaction control specification written in AASHTO format for eventual submission to AASHTO.
