ah, italy!!!

it’s been a while since we last left canadian soil, and so it was very exciting to finally head out to the airport again.

in collaboration with air canada, tourism italy and the italian chamber of commerce western canada, our first travel experience was to italy. the first stop was milan where we picked up a very special and iconic italian car before embarking on a round-trip that would bring us to some of the most amazing places in the north of the country. it was a wonderful trip and after waiting for such a long time, it felt truly special. we hope you will enjoy our big italy-feature - just look for the “italy’ icons - which denote articles about italian products and experiences. we hope that you, too, will visit and discover the beauty of this wonderful country, soon. the end of the summer also saw the return of numerous events, something we have all been waiting for. finally, we can dress up and socialize again, enjoy shows, concerts, and even movies. let’s keep our fingers crossed that in 2022 we will once again be able to enjoy those big events that we have been missing now for almost two years. finally, and as this is the last edition in 2021 (this year just flew by, didn’t it?), we would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a wonderful holiday. hopefully surrounded by friends and family. 2022 will be an interesting year see you soon!

we are ‘live’ again ... With most restrictions lifted by the summer, several events and shows were back, welcoming guests in-person rather than on a screen. It was a great opportunity to dust-off our banners and magazine racks, join some of them and say hello to many of you for the first time in a long time. It was also great to see the launch of a new event. The Classic & Contemporary Car Show was held for the very first time in West Vancouver and despite the weather not fully corporating, it turned into a real highlight of the year, raising a record amount for Canuck Place. Well done, and thank you for letting us be part of this truly amazing event. We can’t wait for the next show!

CLINT EASTWOOD JR. was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California. He had a comfortable, middle-class upbringing in an affluent area and took an interest in music and mechanics. He was, however, uninterested at school and was at one time asked to leave for writing an obscene suggestion to a school official on the athletic field scoreboard. Eastwood later transferred to Oakland Technical High School, yet it is unknown if he graduated. After holding a number of smaller jobs, he tried to enrol at Seattle University in 1951, but instead was drafted into the United States Army. Although he enrolled at Los Angeles City College, Eastwood dropped out after two semesters to pursue acting and landed a few uncredited parts in such B-films as Revenge of the Creature (1955) and Tarantula (1955). His first acting role of any consequence was in the long-running TV show Rawhide (1959) with Eric Fleming. This would become the career breakthrough he had long sought, becoming a recognizable face to television viewers around the country. He even made his first attempt at directing when he filmed several trailers for the show. In 1963, Eastwood was offered to star in an Italian-made western called A Fistful of Dollars (1964), filmed in Spain by a then relatively unknown director, Sergio Leone. He saw an opportunity to escape from his Rawhide image and become an antihero, signing a contract for what would become one of the greatest figures in film history. It established the Man with No Name character’s style, made ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ successful and Clint Eastwood a major star in Italy. He was rehired to film For a Few Dollars More (1965) and the final film of the trilogy, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). In 1967/68 with Eastwood now 37, the trilogy was distributed across America, and catapulted him to movie stardom. A 25% payment from the net box office earnings of Hang ‘Em High (1968) allowed Clint Eastwood to establish his own production company, Malpaso Productions, named after a creek on Eastwood’s property in Monterey County, California. Around the same time, Eastwood filmed Coogan’s Bluff (1968) with Universal Studios and met director Don Siegel. Eastwood and Siegel would later become close friends and work together on five

films over more than ten years. And before the decade was out, Eastwood even played in the only musical of his career, Paint Your Wagon (1969) next to Lee Marvin. The 1970s began with a packed schedule. Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), Kelly’s Heroes (1970), The Beguiled (1971), his directorial debut with the classic erotic thriller Play Misty for Me (1971), and finally, his role as the hard edged police inspector in Dirty Harry (1971). These movies proved to be a turning point in Eastwood’s career, boosting his status to that of a cultural icon. In fact, he was almost cast as James Bond! Sean Connery had announced that he would not play James Bond again, and Eastwood was offered the role. However, he turned it down because he believed the character should be played by an English actor. A steady stream of movies followed throughout the 70s. Joe Kidd (1972), High Plains Drifter (1973), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and the Dirty Harry sequels Magnum Force (1973) and The Enforcer (1976). He then branched out into the comedy genre with Every Which Way but Loose (1978), which became the biggest hit of his career up to that point. In 1979, Eastwood filmed the fact-based prison film Escape from Alcatraz, another major success. The 1980s saw the release of the fourth Dirty Harry film, Sudden Impact (1983), the highest-grossing film of the franchise. He also starred in Bronco Billy (1980), Firefox (1982), Tightrope (1984), City Heat (1984), Pale Rider (1985) and Heartbreak Ridge (1986), all of which were huge commercial hits. In 1988, the fifth and final Dirty Harry movie, The Dead Pool, followed. Although it was an overall success, it marked the beginning of a stretch of commercial failures, resulting in Eastwood taking on low-key projects with often a limited release. In 1992, Eastwood revisited the western genre in Unforgiven, which gave the then 62-year-old his first-ever Academy Award nomination (Best Actor), and an Oscar win for Best Director. In the Line of Fire (1993), A Perfect World (1993) with Kevin Costner, and The Bridges of Madison County (1995) followed and although his films did fairly well, such as Space Cowboys (2000), they didn’t stand out. However, Eastwood bounced back in the mid-’00s, and in 2003, was

Million Dollar Baby was released in 2004, winning four Academy Awards, whilst Gran Torino (2008) was his highest grosser unadjusted for inflation. He then added an impressive list of movies to his director’s portfolio, including Mystic River (2003), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), Changeling (2008), American Sniper (2014) and Sully (2016). Back on the big screen, Eastwood starred in The Mule (2018), and, now at the age of 91, he makes history as the oldest actor to star above the title in a movie with Cry Macho (2021), which he both directed and produced. Eastwood has successfully kept the majority of his personal life a secret, refusing to confirm his exact number of children. He owns several real estate holdings. Clint Eastwood, who has long shown an interest in Californian politics, became mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, in April 1986, a post he held for two years. He is also known as an audiophile, with a strong passion for music all his life, and owns an extensive collection of LPs. He composed the film scores of Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, and many other movies, and performed the song heard over the credits of Gran Torino.

THE SPECTRE TYPE 10 - A LEGEND REIMAGINED

THE X-FACTOR In Canada’s British Columbia, pockets of skilled automotive craftsmen are working away with a dedication and love that is common to all great artists of the world. Their work is truly world-class, yet unexpected in a country best known for its plentiful wilderness, hot housing market, Drake, and hockey stars. Consequently, these Canadian artisans wait restlessly on the edges of the automotive world, ready to break stereotypes and share their work with a larger audience. However, once in a while, they find themselves in the full glare of the spotlight. One Vancouver-based company currently attracting international attention for their unrivaled craftsmanship is Spectre Vehicle Design, an automotive design studio which recently unveiled its first offering, the Spectre Type 10, at the week long automotive spectacle that is Monterey Car Week. Practically unknown prior to launch, Spectre has since captured the media’s imagination and attracted a veritable curiosity for a project, which in their own words is described as “a sports car dressed in the spirit and form of the classic Mini.” Many people are familiar with the iconic small car. Millions were sold around the world between the years of 1959 and 2000 thanks to their accessibility and mass appeal, and the Mini came to represent an important shift in British culture as a phenomenon enjoyed by people of all classes. Working class families owned a Mini as did every member of the Beatles. Today, there is clearly a fascination with all things nostalgic that has created a growing market for restored and modernized vintage vehicles.

shipped to their home. However, according to Spectre Vehicle Design, the driving experience they have designed takes more than just building a rocketship.

Some enthusiasts prefer heritage style restorations that keep the car as original as possible. Old marques can also be injected with more oomph to meet modern performance standards. The Type 10 by Spectre Vehicle Design falls squarely in the latter category, and is their take on what the Mini would be had the original creator been able to access modern technology and designed it as a sports car.

The real challenge is building a car that has poise, thus achieving balance between the tire and power level, reducing noise and vibration while maintaining road feel. The suspension must also be designed to ensure that it is comfortable and handles confidently around a track. The designers must also consider the de facto level of finish in the market, which is extremely high end. The hight of the bar is currently set by notable companies such as Singer Vehicle Design, who create a reimagined version of the air-cooled Porsche 911. Many such companies are more akin to coachbuilders rather than restoration shops. Everyone is chasing their own version of perfection, so a new contender like the Type 10 needs to meet stratospheric expectations.

The Type 10 has been released as an initial run of ten Launch Editions. Each one begins life as a Mini sourced from the province or state of the client, and is brought to Vancouver, then stripped down to bare metal. After any necessary bodywork, every part that is reinstalled is refinished or redesigned by Spectre Vehicle Design. The most obvious upgrade is the engine. It is now a 2.0 litre Honda unit, that is moved to the rear of the car, located just in front of the rear axles to create a mid-engine drivetrain layout, common to many sports cars of today. Engine power has been increased approximately five times from the original, now generating 230 hp at the rear wheels. The power to weight ratio approaches that of a modern Porsche 911. When production is complete, the client is invited to experience their Type 10 for the first time in a drive along the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler before it is then

But perhaps what is most breathtaking about the Type 10 is that the redesigned elements we see inside the car all have the markings of artisanal handiwork. They can stand firm as beautiful pieces on their own, and yet they come together in a cohesive package, complementing each other and reminding us why shape and balance are important. The interior is a refreshing palette of mid century modern design, lavish materials, and zingy splashes of colour. Seeing it in person is like tasting lemon meringue pie for the first time. The unique plate of influences makes more sense after hearing that much of the ICONIC CONCIERGE

design inspiration originates from art and architecture rather than from the automotive world. So who put the Type 10 together? At the core of Spectre Vehicle Design is a small and agile team. David Hogg, CEO, assembled the team with his vision for the brand. Creative Director Marco Lii brings concepts to life with drawing and 3D modelling skills developed from a past life in animation. Philip Ogilvie, Technical Director, oversees the harmonious function of the entirely new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the vehicle. Marketing Director Niko Myyrä oversees presenting the cars to the world. However, a team capable of producing a restomod like the Type 10 requires a much broader array of talent. That’s where a network of highly specialized artisans in the local automotive industry becomes immensely important. The local craftsmen who joined the Spectre Type 10 project are grossly underrated. Derek Friesen, the automotive upholsterer behind Custom Creations in Chilliwack BC, is doing world class work for a wide range of well-heeled Canadian clients. Ocean Wong of Chikara Motorsports in Richmond is a seasoned race car builder and holds an unofficial title for extracting the most power from a naturally aspirated Mazda Miata engine.

Billy Chan is quietly doing bodywork that is among the finest in the world in the industrial zone near Bridgeport Road in Richmond. The list goes on. Adam Trinder is a master fabricator in his own right, Trent Shumay is a wizard with CNC machining, and Michael Hogg is a razor sharp engineer originally from Toronto. And one thing they have in common is that while people in the automotive world may have seen their work, many don’t know them by name. Spectre Vehicle Design hopes to change that. It takes a lifetime of dedication to build the skill sets and experience that these extraordinary people possess. The first Type 10 Launch Edition bears a number of plaques under the hood to represent the individuals who made it possible. They are masters in their respective fields and their talents deserve to be recognized, not only for the sake of honouring their dedication and accomplishments, but to inspire future generations who may be destined to follow in their footsteps. Spectre Vehicle Design wants to attract and cultivate skilled Canadian talent for building the Type 10 and other models in the future. Blending the old world of handassembled Minis with standardization processes takes a unique mix of automation and hand finishing.

Once the initial excitement of seeing the Type 10 settles, it becomes clear that the devil is in the detail. The steering wheel is a contemporary take on the traditional mk1 Mini wheel, with a modernized diameter and spokes. The whole thing has been CNC milled from aluminum and is rimmed with a dark sparkling material usually seen in hard surface countertops. Peering around the airy interior, one might notice that the stitching on the leather-wrapped chassis reinforcement is immaculate. On the outside, the hand molded wheel arches carefully wrap over the wide three piece wheels in a way that screams midengine machine. Closer inspection reveals that they are not actually moulded to the body but the panel gap is so tight that they appear virtually seamless. There is a lot to take in. And if anything, the details are an ode to the craftsmen. They are a ballad to long hours in the workshop where tooling paths are fine tuned, sewing machines whir rhythmically, and body panels are hand sanded where the swishing of sandpaper is occasionally interrupted by a hand gliding over bodywork. The details speak volumes about why we romanticize working with our hands. And they owe a big thanks to the Canadian artisans that laboured over them.

DIAMOND RALLY 2021 In 2021, 100 supercars participated in the annual Diamond Rally, a charitable weekend with a collection of individual events held in Vancouver and in Whistler. The event started at TROVE in Richmond.

At the heart of this year’s Rally is the story of Whistler wish kid Lydia, who was born with a heart condition. Lydia’s first open heart surgery was at 6 months old. Now 16 years old and after watching the documentary Biggest Little Farm, an interest in sustainable agriculture was born. When Make-A-Wish asked her what she would wish for, Lydia said she wants to learn how to grow organic food and interact with animals. Farming is the next big thing in health and wellness, and she wants to experience that firsthand through her wish. “We’ve been involved with the Diamond Rally for many years”, explains Laura Ullock, Director, Development, Make-A-Wish BC & Yukon, “and we’re thrilled to be named as the ‘Charity of Choice’ for the 2021 rally. Our team continues to work diligently to deliver wishes for children within the limits of COVID and to prepare to address the significant backlog of wishes. A NEW DIMENSION IN TIME MADE IN TUSCANY The man eating his own watches is Italo Fontana. And yes, that is his real name. The visionary designer and founder of the boutique watch brand U-BOAT, based out of a small village in Tuscany, just outside the historical city of Lucca with its many well-preserved churches and medieval walls, stands out from the crowd, and so do his watches. It was in 2000 when Italo Fontana discovered the original drawings that his grandfather, Ilvo Fontana, an engineer specialized in precision instruments, had made for the Italian government in 1942. They were for a watch for the Italian navy pilots. A watch that had to be of the highest quality and maximum durability, whilst being extremely precise and accurate. The design also had to ensure that the wristwatch was big enough so that the pilots could instantly read the time in all weather and light conditions. Ilvo Fontana took all requests and presented the technical drawings to the Italian government for approval. Unfortunately, the project was cancelled and production of

the watches never started. The blueprints ended up in a drawer in Fontana’s workshop for the next decades, until Italo Fontana found them. He decided to bring his grandfather’s vision back to life. Studying the blueprints, revising them and adding his own vision to it, he finally presented “A New Dimension In Time” to the world. U-BOAT was born and received a lot of attention with its bold and distinctive designs, large cases and the left-hand side crown. The materials chosen make them reliable and durable and resistant to the most extreme conditions. It didn’t take long for

ORB: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE At first glance, the Orb looks like a futuristic model of an eye with its perfectly formed shiny sphere, and its dial taking the place of the iris and the pupil. But nothing is ever quite what it seems with the collaborative clocks of MB&F x L’Epée 1839. The minimalistic structure is composed of four elytra (the technical word for a beetle’s protective wing covers, in case you were wondering) that not only open up, but can also swivel like a transformer to display the Orb in a variety of different positions. Ah, Italy! The world is full of fascinating places to visit, breathtaking views to see, interesting people to meet, and fascinating history to learn about. But in Italy ... there is something different. Yes, Italy certainly does have much to offer, from spectacular cities, ancient ruins, wonderful museums, to soaring mountains, great beaches, and beautiful natural scenery. But there is more, something many throughout time have written about, something that is so mesmerizing and beautiful, that ‘magic’ is the word most often used to describe it. Anna Akhmatove (1889-1966), a Soviet Russian poet, quite perfectly described Italy as “a dream that keeps returning for the rest of your life”, and so we decided that having gone through almost two years of a pandemic that brought the world to a stand-still, and as the first real opportunity to travel, Italy would be the perfect place to visit. There are two round-trip routes that we can highly recommend to discover the real beauty of Italy. The first one will let you experience the mesmerizing south of Italy. Fly with Air Canada to the eternal city and Italy’s capital, Rome, visit ancient Pompeii, fascinating and chaotic Naples, and then take the dream road that brings you to the tumbling coastal towns along the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri. The other highly recommended route will showcase the best of northern and central Italy – and it is this route that we have decided to take. It starts in the global fashion and design capital of Milan, followed by a visit to Italy’s largest lake and its crystal clear waters, framed by the majestic Dolomites, Lake Garda. From there, the next stops are Verona with its famous ancient amphitheatre, and the “The Floating City” of Venice, before we will visit the home of many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture, Florence. The last stop will introduce the enchanting beauty of the “Italian Riviera” with Rapallo and Portofino. This round trip is a little less than 1,000 km, with easy daily driving distances of 75 km – 260 km. You can do it in a week, but to truly indulge in what “Dolce Vita” describes so perfectly, we would recommend spending 2 nights at each location, maybe a third night in Florence. MILAN The second-most populous city after Rome, Milan not only is a global capital of fashion and design, it is also the leading financial centre and the most prosperous manufacturing hub of the country. Fiera Milano, the city’s Exhibition Center and Trade Fair complex, is one of the most important in the world. Founded in 600 BC, Milan has an ancient city centre with many glamorous buildings and palazzos surrounding the symbol of Milan, the iconic Duomo di Milano, built in 1386. Situated among the three Italian regions of Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, it is rich with historical monuments, castles and fortresses, making it a favourite spot among famous writers and painters to find the inspiration they need to give birth to their art. 25 picturesque villages, all bound by the Gardesana state road, surround the 370 km² large lake with its mild climate, making it the ideal area for cultivation of local products such as olives, lemons and oranges, wines and truffle. You ‘should be’ able to drive around the lake in about 4 hours (maybe leave early in the morning...), but you simply have to stay at least for one night to truly savour the scenery and sights, the many cafes along the way, and maybe even board a boat and sail along the lake’s western shores past islands, towns, villas, and more. We can also recommend the 20-minute ferry ride from Maderno on the Western Shore to Torri del Benaco, should you want to cut the drive short and instead spend more time at your hotel. Which is exactly what we did.

Situated in the same province as Verona, stews are a must. Try yota, a stew made of beans, sauerkraut, potatoes, ham and sometimes smoked ribs, or Zuppa di Valpelline, a stew made of cabbage and served with croutons or dried bread. Verona is more than just the setting to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. The relatively small city on the Adige River is home to several ancient Roman landmarks, the most famous one being the Roman Empire’s biggest amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona. This first-century structure today functions as a grand venue for operas. It is located right next to Piazza Bra, Verona’s largest square and the city’s central park with a lush garden and large trees, as well as a fountain and statue of “Italy’s father”, King Vittorio Emanuele II. Make sure to book a sea view room or suite – there is nothing better than sitting on the balcony before you go to bed, taking in the lights of the coast and the boats in the bay, and waking up to striking blues of the sea and the sky.

The à-la-carte Eden Roc restaurant is at the private beach, open in summer for both lunch and candlelight dinner. You’re in Italy. Obviously, the car of choice should be Italian. And unique. Fast. Fun. Well, our ride checks all of the above, yet it is most likely not what you would expect us to drive. It is ... a Fiat Cinquecento! Well, actually, it is one on steroids. The ultimate 500, the Abarth 695. And not just any 695, our friends at Abarth handed us the keys to the 695 70° Anniversario! This little pocket rocket was offered in 2019 in a limited edition of only 1947 units to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Abarth. Powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with 180 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, the sprint to 100 km/h is done in 6.7 seconds before topping out at 225 km/h. On the outside, you will find 17-inch

SuperSport wheels, Brembo brakes with four-piston aluminium calipers and self-ventilated discs, a roof-mounted adjustable spoiler and a Record Monza exhaust system with active valves. Inside, body-hugging sport seats and lots of tech goodies round up this unique ride in Monza 1958 green. We had a lot of fun with this little powerhouse, and it was the perfect car for Italy’s narrow cobblestone alley’s in the cities, and the tight parking garages. Insiders Secret of Top Quality Sparkling Wines from Italy PIZZA, PASTA, PROSCIUTTO, AND PARMESAN. Some of the most delicious food to come out of Italy starts with a “p” - and so does Prosecco, Italy’s most popular sparkling wine. But is it really “just” a sparkling wine? Or is it, as many claim, closer to a Champagne? Now, as we know, only, well, sparkling wines from the Champagne region in France are allowed to carry the prestigious name and they also have a very different and more time-consuming production method. But what is it that makes a Prosecco so special? We find the answers at one of the oldest Prosecco-making wineries in Italy, Bisol. Bisol is a time-honoured winery in Valdobbiadene, a wine-growing area just below the Alpine-Dolomite areas of Veneto. Blessed with stony soils and a moderate Adriatic climate, Valdobbiadene is home to the Glera grape, and Prosecco Superiore must be made with at least 85% of this variety. Ancient documents testify that the Bisol family has been making wine since 1542 and today, five centuries of history and 21 generations later, the winery is under the helm of Gianluca Bisol (President/CEO) and his brother, Desiderio (Chief Enologist/Technical Director), creating award-winning organic Prosecco Superiore DOCG (Designation Of Controlled Origin and Guaranteed). Harvested by hand due to the steepness of the hillsides, Prosecco Superiore is truly a handcrafted wine, with 95% of wines classified as spumante (sparkling). Made in the Charmat, or tank method, which involves a secondary fermentation in stainless steel autoclaves, it takes less time than Champagne production, which uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes. Champagne also requires a secondary fermentation in the bottle, known as the Methode Traditional. This also results in a different and longer-lasting bubble experience. So, coming back to the comparison with Champagne, they both have their uniqueness. Due to the drier nature of Champagne, it is best paired with raw bar foods like clams or oysters, and pickled or vinegary little bites. Fine bottles of Prosecco offer up aromas of tropical fruits, banana cream, hazelnut, vanilla, and honeycomb and come in different sweetness levels, with the sweetest being labelled as Dry. Extra Dry shows a mid-range on the sweetness scale, whilst Brut is the driest Prosecco with fine bubbles and citrus flavours. Brut, in our opinion, is the best alternative to a Champagne. Prosecco Superiore is very versatile and often used for aperitivo, or as one of the best ingredients for a Spritz. In Italy, it is often consumed at the lunch or dinner table, where it accompanies many dishes, from starter to dessert. Prosecco Superiore Dry are traditionally paired with desserts but also work very well with mildly spiced Asian dishes. May we recommend? Bisol Cartizze Prosecco, Valdobbiadene Superiore Di Cartizze DOCG 2019. This single vineyard Prosecco is considered the top of its class, and comes from the “heart” of Prosecco, where the rarest of all selections is produced. Bisol Crede Prosecco Superiore Brut DOCG 2019. “Crede” is the dialect term used for “clay”, the main soil profile of the vineyards for this Prosecco. Dry and mineral in character and a wonderful wine to start any dinner or celebration with.

We all like to know where products come from. However, just knowing where the brand originates doesn’t necessarily mean its products are made in the very same country. A Mercedes can be made in the US, with parts coming from many countries around the world, the Fiat might be from Poland, the Hugo Boss shirt could be from Turkey and most electronic consumer products leave factories in Asia. This is where the “Made in” label comes into place. It reassures us and suggests quality craftsmanship that is associated with the true origin of the product in question. Or does it...?

On our recent visit to Florence, we had the opportunity to sit down with Filippo Ricci, Creative Director of luxury brand Stefano Ricci. The label was founded in 1972 by his parents, Florentine designer Stefano Ricci and his wife Claudia, and from the outset they established a philosophy of a real “100% Made in Italy”, setting it apart from many other Italian labels. “You have to know that there are many loopholes when it comes to the rules of origin,” Filippo explains. “In a nutshell, and according to laws of the European Union, one can simply call

direct English translation of the term sprezzatura will tell you it means “contempt”. However like most things Italian, there is a depth beyond the seemingly simple surface.

The contemporary interpretation of sprezzatura is a lifestyle of “studied carelessness”. It means one has mastered the rules, and now it’s time to break them. It has been demonstrated in the artistic curves of a Bugatti, the earthy complexity of rustic Tuscan cuisine, and the unapologetic scent of a classic Vespa. Niccolò Paganini transcended the rules of virtuosos by intentionally breaking his violin strings, and Ferruccio Lamborghini’s legacy continues to throw punches at the automotive world.

According to Expert Stylist and Fashion Historian Sougata Mitra, this studied carelessness is most commonly demonstrated in Italian menswear. While the British laid out foundations for structured tailoring, the Italians embraced the relaxed fits and fabrics of their warmer climate and happier lifestyle. Lighter weight wools blended with linens and silks and softly structured shoulders propelled Italian tailoring from backwater inferiority in the 19th century to world-class trendsetting by the 1960’s. After World War I, it was Serafino Riva who transformed Riva into a genuine brand that would make yachting history, claiming countless wins and records in national and international competitions. But it was in the 1950s when Pietro’s greatgrandson Carlo turned Riva boats into luxury icons through his focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail. In this decade of the Italian industrial revolution, he tapped into the predominant ethos – the lionisation of speed – with a series of wood-based designs of unmistakable performance. He began to collaborate with designer and architect Giorgio Barilani and in November 1962, the legend was

born: Aquarama. The magical lines and irresistible allure made her an instant classic. Another historic milestone arrived in 1969, when the company began making vessels from fibreglass in addition to their wooden runabouts. Unfortunately, it was also the year when Carlo Riva, disillusioned by the climate of industrial unrest, sold the company to the US concern Whittaker. In 1989, a year after the Riva company was fully bought out by the British group Vickers, the last member of the Riva family left the company, starting a new era. At the 1991 Genoa Boat Show, Riva unveiled its first yacht designed by Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italiana Design – the 58’ Bahamas. In May 2000, Riva became part of Ferretti Group, which continued to work with Officina Italiana Design to

designs the whole Riva fleet, and launched the Aquariva. This 33-foot embodiment of the brand DNA became an immediate triumph of élan, innovation and exclusivity, a modern version of the beloved legend, the Aquarama. This is where yet another billionaire - Jared Isaacman, the CEO of an

online payments company - enters the stage. On September 16th, 2021, he invited three other civilian astronauts to board a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft for a mission dubbed Inspiration4. He even covered the tickets - at $55 million each - for the three-day trip to orbital space, at an altitude higher than that of the International Space Station (ISS). Space Perspective, a Florida based company, now wants to combine the best of both worlds, offering zero-emissions spaceflights using a high-tech version of a hot air balloon, with a pilot and up to eight travellers riding in a pressurized capsule suspended from an enormous 100-meter diameter blimp. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum, who have been responsible for some of the most remarkable breakthroughs in space innovation and exploration in the last 20 years, “Spaceship Neptune” is lauded as an extremely safe way to go to space. They apply flight technology used for decades by NASA and other government entities around the globe. The six-hour trips will launch from Space Coast Air and Spaceport, located adjacent to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. After a gentle two-hour ascent to around 30 kilometres, up to eight guests can enjoy 360-degree views for two hours, before the capsule makes its descent back to Earth. Space Perspective will also be the first-of-its-kind space laboratory, able to repeatedly test and capture data from a part of Earth’s atmosphere, which to date has been little researched. We rarely use the word ‘cute’ for a car - but this little electric van, called the XBUS, is just that. Cute. “The most innovative and modular light vehicle in the world” according to its German manufacturer. It comes with four wheel hub electric motors, a rather small 10kWh battery and 75bhp output. Add the power of its solar panels to the mix and you can go up to 200km, or up to 600km if you opt for the 30kWh version. The charging time is quoted as three hours. The XBUS has a modular setup, so you can make it a flatbed pick-up (or tilting dump truck), a camper, or a 7-passenger bus. There’s even an off-road package, too. “An automobile for the sky”, the Leo Coupe by USA-based Urban eVTOL is a three passenger (including the pilot) aircraft with a maximum speed of 400 km/h), a range of 483 km and a flight time of 1 hour 15 minutes with reserves. The futuristic looking Leo Coupe has 16 ducted fans for VTOL flight and 6 ducted fans for forward flight. A transparent floor and panoramic windows allow spectacular views and its compact size of 3x6 meters allows it to be parked in a standard sized garage. THE LILIUM JET

Already in its fifth generation of demonstrators, the eVTOL Lilium Jet uses 36 electric-powered jet engines across its wings, with 72 battery modules in the aircraft. Built by German electric aviation start-up Lilium, the seven-seat (six passengers plus a pilot in a separate cockpit) aircraft is expected to have a low noise level of just 60 dBa while flying at an altitude of 100m. It is powered by 36 tilting ducted electric fans, allowing a vertical take-off and then a transition to wing-borne forward flight. With a cruise speed of 280 km/h and a range of 250 km plus reserves, the company intends to focus on regional air mobility rather than for intra-city transport. MERCEDES EQG G-wagon fans rejoyce! The German automaker just introduced the EQG “near production study”, an allelectric and more futristic version of its famous utilitarian off-road icon, at IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich. It has four electric motors located at each wheel, batteries incorporated into the frame for a lower center of gravity and a redesigned rear axle, with a new two-speed gearbox to make it just as capable when off-roading as the standard G-Class. This concept aircraft is a hydrogen-powered “slowed-rotor winged compound helicopter”. It features a large four-bladed main rotor, a variable incidence wing that rotates up to 90 degrees to minimize download for efficient hovering and swiveling tail rotor that provides anti-torque and yaw control. THE OPENER BLACKFLY

Certified as an ultralight aircraft, the Opener BlackFly is the brainchild of Canadian Marcus Leng. It has no wheels and simply touches down on the keel of the hull and lists to one side or the other until the winglet at the very tip of the airfoil settles to the ground. The top-speed of the BlackFly is just under 100 km/h with a flying time of around 30 minutes. The maximum altitude is set to 400 meters - and should safety be one of your concerns, you can opt for a parachute that can be operated at an altitude of just 30 meters above ground. Absolutely! The stunningly beautiful EL1 is created as a ‘reinterpretation of the rally legend Audi Sport Quattro’ from the 1980s Rally Group B era. BMW I VISION CIRCULAR BMW is thinking bigger, setting a new level when it comes to the total carbon footprint of a vehicle. Re:think, Re:duce, Re:use and Re:cycle - The Circular, a concept of a compact, fully electric vehicle with a focus on sustainability and luxury for the year 2040, is not only designed to be 100 percent recyclable, it also uses nearly 100 percent recycled components in its production. ASTON MARTIN VALHALLA Aston Martin calls it ‘Son of Valkyrie’ in reference to the company’s Hypercar, although Valhalla in Norse mythology is a majestic, enormous hall in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Nevertheless - we doubt any of those Thor-sized gods will fit in this gorgeous all-wheel hybrid, Aston Martin’s first series production mid-engined supercar. Built with chassis, aerodynamic and electronics expertise forged in Formula One, the Valhalla is powered by a bespoke AMG engineered twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, producing 750PS, and a pair of 150kW/400V electric motors, one on the rear axle just behind the mid-mounted V8 and another at the front - contributing an additional 204PS and endowing the Valhalla with a total of 950 PS. Completing the powertrain is an all-new 8-speed DCT transmission. The result is a 2.5 second sprint to 100 km/h and a top-speed of 350 km/h. In terms of outright track capability, a stunning 6:30 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time is being targeted. Running in EV-only mode, the Valhalla will be capable of a maximum 130 km/h and has a zero-emission range of 15km. CREATING IMPACT Candid Conversations with Leaders in Life, Business and Philanthropy

W

WELCOME TO THE FALL EDITION OF CREATING IMPACT, Candid Conversations with Leaders in Life, Business and Philanthropy. Recently, I had the pleasure of spending time with Peter Chung, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Primacorp Ventures- an incredibly diverse company with an inspiring mission- “we change lives through education, service and care”. This mission was clearly born from Peter’s generosity of spirit, something that was evident the moment I met him. As we sat down, I asked Peter to share with me his life’s journey and he chose to go begin at the time of his grandfather’s life so I could understand the full context of where his family came from and how that helped shape who he is today. Peter’s grandfather was born in 1904 in Korea and in 1910, the Japanese occupation of Korea began. He grew up in this environment and as a young adult, chose to become a police officer. However, this career ended up being short-lived as he was fired due to being seen by the Japanese as favouring Koreans and it was at that time that Peter’s grandfather decided he wanted to take his own life. After four failed suicide attempts, he decided to turn his life to learning more about God and becoming a missionary. Towards the end of World War II, Peter’s grandfather was jailed and tortured because he refused to worship the Japanese emperor. Eventually, he was thrown out of jail nearly dead and at that time, fully gave his life to missionary work and started several churches in Korea and grew a family of six children, including Peter’s father. It was at this point in our conversation that Peter shifted the story to that of his father’s journey which led to the family immigrating to the US. “My dad was the oldest of his brothers and sisters and when he became a young adult, my grandfather asked him to become a missionary. He declined and pursued a formal education. In 1965 at age 35, he moved to the United States to study at UCLA.” After settling down and beginning a master’s in education, Peter’s father decided to bring over Peter and his four siblings to start a new life in Los Angeles. “I remember very clearly at that time a woman named June Briney who was the head of the Foursquare Organization, sponsored my dad to have me and my three brothers and our sister come to the US from Korea. June’s husband also ended up co-signing for my dad so he could buy us a two-bedroom house. There were seven of us living there so my brother and I decided to renovate the basement and it was like our own little apartment!” In 1968, Peter started junior high school at Thomas Starr King in Los Angeles. He remembers his dad saying to him on

the first day of school, “Peter, this is not Korea, you need to study hard, work hard, be a good student and DON’T FIGHT!”. Peter then explained to me, “I wasn’t a good student in Korea. I fought a lot because we were in a small town, and it was always about who could be the toughest boy”. As junior high began, Peter ended up in three classes- Physical Education, Shop and Textiles. “I didn’t speak any English, so they put me in these three classes. On the first day, another boy in class kept smiling at me. I walked over to him and right away, I kicked him in the head! I did this because he was smiling at me and in Korea at that time, when another boy smiled at you, it was like he was making fun of you.” Peter and this boy ended up


becoming friends once he explained to him why he did what he did. “It also made me other friends right away and soon I was learning a new language… but not English, I was learning Spanish because all of my friends were Spanishspeaking! In fact, later in life I became the Honorary Consul of Paraguay in part because of my ability to speak Spanish.” After finishing junior high, Peter went to John Marshall High School in Los Angeles. “It was a very different learning style than in Korea. Here we could ask questions, which we couldn’t do in Korea. We were encouraged to speak up and ask for help when we needed it. This was very different to what I experienced in Korea.” At age 16, Peter was asked to do a martial arts demo for the high school and 1500 kids showed up. Little did he know, this was the start of Peter’s journey as an entrepreneur. “After my demo, 30 students ended up wanting to learn martial arts, so I started my first business, teaching these students in the park for $12 an hour”. The classes continued to grow, and Peter was asked to teach inside at a gym nearby. Soon thereafter, he was teaching two classes and earning great money doing so. It was around this same time in Peter’s life that his dad told his mom that he wanted to start a church. “There were 3,000 Koreans in LA at that time and my dad wanted to support them. My mother was not happy about his idea of starting a church but in 1970, he convinced her to become a pastor and they opened their first church together. My mom still had to work at a sweatshop, and I earned extra income to support them as well.” Following his graduation from John Marshall, Peter was accepted into UCLA and due to his growing frustration with the fact that his mom still had to keep working, he left home and move in with his brother and his friend near UCLA. “I was living on the couch and, every morning, my brother’s friend would wake up at 6:00 AM and begin reading the bible aloud. He kept asking me if I knew what it meant to be a Christian and so I decided to join a bible study group. At the same time, my major at UCLA was math so I always felt conflicted because the bible says that God created everything, but math and science are very logical and linear.” Peter then shared that at this time he began studying Jesus to try and understand more about what he was reading in the bible. He was questioning

many things and wanted to know more. “I looked at history and the bible matched Jewish history so I kept asking myself if I should put my faith in the bible or science. One day during my time at UCLA, I attended a two-hour debate between a UCLA evolutionist and an MIT biochemistry professor and learned that while science must be repeatable and measurable, in evolution there are so many unknowns, so you have to have faith!” This debate resonated deeply with Peter, and it made him decide to become a Christian. From that day forward, he would walk around the UCLA campus and share about how to become a Christian and he and his friend became missionaries. At that time, Peter went to his dad to tell him about his newfound path in life, “My dad looked at me and said ‘Pete, your intentions are good, but you’d be a much better businessman. Why don’t you become a businessman and help fund the missionaries and their work?’ So, my buddy then became a missionary in the Philippines, and I supported him financially working as a computer programmer because I had switched my major to include math and computer science.” After his time at UCLA, Peter continued working in computer programming. “I was at a job that got boring because I worked extremely hard and finished all of my work very quickly, so I decided to go to Cal-Poly to study engineering. After a year there, I felt underwhelmed, so decided to try accounting, and then management, leading me to an MBA. I went on to become a manager at a manufacturing company. Within a year, I realized that this would be as far as I could go working for other people. I was 26 or 27 at the time, I was the youngest guy on the management team at this company and felt that the culture and approach were unambitious, making it a ‘bad fit’ for me. It was from here that Peter began thinking about starting his own business after the oil company he was at downsized from 1200 to 300 employees due to oil prices crashing and he was the only one left in his

department. “I asked God, ‘what can I do? I want to start something, but I have no money.’ I listened and God spoke to me and told me that I knew how to teach from teaching Sunday school, and I knew computer programming…so go and teach it! I got a classroom for $200 per month and signed up 10 students at $2000 tuition for a six-month course. I would teach it two nights per week, and it got so popular that I started a second course at $2000 for six months and 12 more students signed up! Then I started teaching weekend classes and soon I was making $60,000-$70,000 in six months versus $40,000 per year at the oil company!” It was at this point that Peter asked to be laid off from the oil company and with the severance he received, he bought a used minicomputer called a Data General. “I saw an ad for $10,000 and after negotiating with the guy selling it, I got it for $4,000 cash! This ended up being my first education business and it grew FAST!! We kept expanding and growing and one day, after making a $250,000 deposit into the company bank account, the bank chairman asked me to go for lunch where he then invited me to join the board of the bank. That’s when I knew the business was flourishing and from then, I kept investing, buying stock of the bank, I got into home building, an auto safety business and many other investments, all of the success of the education business.” By 1989, Peter shared that he was achieving strong financial success, leading him to dream of becoming like John Rockefeller, who was also a Christian. He went all-in and bet everything on his homebuilding business and other real estate ventures to go big on it, “we kept doing well and growing

and the whole time I’m doing well to help missionaries. We had 14 businesses going at that time and then…. I lost EVERYTHING. A combination of an economic downturn and regulatory challenges (as private schools were targeted for political reasons) completely undercut our business operations. From success to the sidelines — it was extremely hard, and tested me in ways I could never have imagined.” In 1991, Peter and his family moved to Seattle to get away from Los Angeles. “We bought in the summertime and once the fall and winter rains set in, I asked God ‘why am I here? I’m sorry for being so arrogant, what else can I do to serve you?’ I felt that over the years I had become arrogant with my success, and I realized I needed to stop being like that and to give back!” A few years later, Peter came to visit a friend in Vancouver and after reading an article in the Vancouver Sun about high unemployment in the city, he thought he should maybe buy a school here. “We moved to Vancouver, bought a school in Abbotsford and started Vancouver Career College Inc. We grew from there through both acquisition and organic growth and in 2001, we acquired Reeves College in Alberta. In 2007, we acquired Corinthian College and rebranded it to CDI College, which now has 23 locations across Canada. Our focus has been consistent since then, and somewhat ahead of the times. The workforce, due to the digital transformation of the economy, has been changing. Through our college courses, we focus on offering courses and accreditation that provided our students with the skills they needed to thrive in the new economy. We also recognized that talent mobility was a sustaining/growing trend and, more so than universities, our colleges were able to offer new career pathways — to upskill and reskill a workforce in need of change. The demand for our courses demonstrates that our focus has been and continues to be very well-received.” Toward the end of our conversation,

Peter shifted the focus to family and giving and shared a story of tragic loss. “On September 27th, 2012, our son Joseph passed away from a swimming accident. Joseph had both epilepsy and autism and he loved people so much. He would walk up to anyone and say ‘Hi, my name is Joseph, what is your name?’, he just loved to greet people. Through having Joseph in our life, God has shown us the other side. In his honour, six months after he passed away, we moved ahead with opening Joe’s Table, a café that we had created with Joseph when he was alive, focused on inclusion.” At Joe’s Table, people with high-functioning autism and down syndrome are hired to give them the opportunity to have gainful employment. There are now four Joe’s Table locations with more to open soon. In the closing minutes of our time together, Peter shared his thoughts and wisdom when it comes to philanthropy and how business can be used to make a difference in the world. “Our businesses are focused on making a difference in the lives of others. We have 25,000 graduates per year who are people wanting to move their lives and careers to the next level or maybe they are starting over. Internally, we are always telling our staff, You’re here to change peoples’ lives!’ There is nothing better than giving back to others. I thank my son Joe for this as he truly opened my eyes to the social responsibility we have when we become successful and how important it is to give back to the community, whether through business, philanthropy or both.” Peter and his wife Stephanie established the Joseph Chung Scholarship Fund in honour of his late son, hosting the 9th annual event this past year. In addition to his educational philanthropy, Peter and his family are active donors to healthcare, the arts, and faith-based charitable organization around the world. “As I move forward in life, I am deepening

my focus on philanthropy and helping the arts and both local and international projects for basic necessities such as clean water, medical care and food.” Through scholarships, bursaries and other financial assistance to which we are contributing significant and growing annual amounts, we are pleased to be able to help hundreds of students each year to afford educational opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them. My family and I, and our entire company, feel very humbled to be of such assistance, as we know we are helping to change lives for the better.” As our conversation came to an end, I asked Peter to share what advice he would give others when it comes to giving back, “To truly be happy, you have to ensure you focus your life on four key areas: 1. Your physical health 2. Your emotional health 3. Your mental health 4. Your spiritual health You are never too young to start giving but if you don’t look after these areas of your life, it’s going to be much harder to give. Giving is a part of our duty and responsibility as a society you can always find a way to help others. Everyone has unique skills and abilities they can contribute; create a vision and mission for giving and practice it often as it’s no secret that those who give are happy people!”

KATHERINE EVANS A LIFETIME MISSION TO CREATE DEFINITIVE BOUTIQUE FEEL-GOOD EXPERIENCES BY DR. OLIVER FINLAY IC: In fifteen words or less, who are you and what do you do? KE: I’m a Vancouver-born and based entrepreneur, equestrian, mom, sister, daughter, friend, dreamer and doer. IC: It’s been an incredibly tough year for so many industries, but probably none more so than the hospitality sector. What challenges have you faced over the last 18 months? KE: The last 18 months for the global tourism industry have been staggeringly difficult. OPUS Vancouver was closed for nearly 2 years. For any hotel big or small, this is unheard of and complicated for so many reasons. IC: What do you see as some of the challenges that face the Vancouver hospitality industry as it rebuilds over the coming months and how are the team at Opus working to confront these? KE: The team at OPUS Vancouver, led by the new GM Sarah Vallely, is laser focused on delivering an exceptional “safe” post-pandemic experience. OPUS Vancouver has always been a home away from home for so many people - and I’m delighted they are all coming back! IC: On a positive note, what lessons have you learnt that will help you evolve and come back stronger in the post-pandemic environment? KE: There is so much conversation today in every industry about ‘build back better.’ We are not trying to get back to where we were overnight, it’s impossible. It is almost like the world got burned down to the ground and now we are coming back. A common theme centres around being more sustainable and tender with our earth.

IC: Personally, how did you navigate the challenges of not being able to immerse yourself in the business that has been so much a part of your life and your family’s life for so long? KE: The pandemic forced me, like everyone else, to pause. I left the luxury hotel industry after nearly 19 years. It gave me time to reflect on what I love, and I discovered my passion project, Tallu, which is my passion product. I am a new version of me, doing what I love every day. IC: Tell us more about the new venture, Tallu & Co. KE: Founded in 2020, Tallu & Co. is a passion project of mine, where I create natural, pure and organic blends designed to better your life, home, office or sacred space. There is a line of products for home, you, horses, and more recently, dogs, and it is growing daily. IC: What are you enjoying most about developing the brand and what is your vision for Tallu & Co.’s evolution over the next 3 years? KE: I feel so fortunate to be creating products that are designed to make you feel better. This is my fourth career - and I love it the most. My love for horses has become my work and that is such a gift. Evolution? I have so much in store for this little company. As long as my products continue to travel the globe enhancing people’s spaces, I am a happy girl. IC: What are some of the challenges you are facing in building Tallu & Co. that you hadn’t previously encountered in your work with Opus and KSE Consulting? KE: Designing and building a brandnew business, in the heart of a global pandemic has been a challenge. Even J.C. Wiatt didn’t have to deal with that when she moved to Vermont to make apple sauce (remember Diane Keaton in Baby Boom?!)! In all seriousness, the pandemic was confronting for me in many ways. My hospitality-focused consulting business suffered. I was desperate to find a way to ground myself. I had an idea, and I brought it to life…from my kitchen, one bottle of soap at a time. While it’s a completely new business, novel to my past experience, I called on my skills in brand development, marketing and communications and put them to work for Tallu & Co. IC: Do you think your journey over recent months is indicative of a wider shift in how entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the changing landscape

and the increasing ease with which brands can be built utilizing technology and social media? KE: I do. The most fundamental and important thing entrepreneurs can do is make beautiful products that serve people. From there, a social media presence helps spread the word and the product begins to speak for itself. Happy customers share their experiences with their online networks, which builds trust and community from there. IC: There are some incredible start-ups taking the world by storm in Vancouver at the moment, with many led by some amazing women. How do you think the changes in society that have occurred

over the last 5 years have contributed to more women attaining such incredible success as entrepreneurs and what more can be done in future to remove barriers to entry for a more diverse community of entrepreneurs that feels truly inclusive? KE: Women have always been grossly underrepresented and underfunded in business. This is even more true for women of colour and indigenous women. The last five years has seen an important global reckoning – from the #metoo movement to Black Lives Matter to reconciliation here in Canada – it’s the beginning of an awareness that injustice and inequality are pervasive and affect us all. The support that woman have experienced as a result

IC: What do you enjoy most about your work?

KE: Michelle Obama - she is so many things. An inspiration as a world leader, mother, and ray of sunshine. Oprah Winfrey, well need I say more? My late Gram, I loved her more than anything else in this world. Jennifer Aniston because I am obsessed with the Morning Show. Finally, Bradley Cooper. I just love him. He lived in OPUS Vancouver for nearly a year in 2006 and he actually used to walk my dog, Meg. He is such a lovely guy.

KE: I have met the most interesting, kind, fun and inspiring people since this Tallu & Co.’s journey began. I have had incredible support from complete strangers. The greatest joy is when people share stories of how the oils have helped their kids, dogs, parents, or family get better in some way or another. IC: What 4 words would your closest friends use to describe you? KE: Vivacious. Bodacious. Clever. Funny. IC: Thank you Katherine! We really loved what Opus had created and are delighted to see your doors open again. We look forward to seeing the evolution of Tallu & Co. too, so please keep us up to speed with your progress. of these movements has created so much opportunity for women to find the courage and financial support to develop a business and brand of their own…often times while raising a family. IC: Which Vancouver-based female entrepreneurs should we be keeping an eye out for at the moment and why? KE: Miriam Alden from BRUNETTE Brands. Miriam just started with creating sweatshirts for her friends and is now creating a movement of its own. Jillian Sheridan of Legends Haul. The pandemic gave birth to Legends Haul and the success is staggering. Not only are both of these women hugely successful they are both kind and believe in helping the “little guys.” IC: Over the next five years, what would success for Tallu & Co., KSE Consulting and Opus Hotel look like to you? KE: Success in my eyes has the world travelling the globe safely and staying at OPUS Vancouver (obviously). My goal for Tallu is that the brand continues to bring joy and educate about the healing powers of essential oils. This is my true calling, and I am committed to sharing the magic. IC: …and finally, here are our ‘Completely Unrelated, but Nevertheless Entertaining Standard 10 Questions’… you ready? KE: Love this! IC: You lose everything you own. How do you rise like a phoenix from the ashes? KE: Find the nearest broom! Sweep up the ashes and do the right next thing. IC: We finish this interview and as you step outside, you find a lottery ticket that ends up winning you $20 million. What do you do? KE: Oh, lucky me. I’d start an education fund for my son, Sam. I’d make a bold donation to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation which creates a better future for those living with HIV/AIDS and another to the Equality Fund, to sustainably resource global women’s rights organisations. Then, I’d take what’s left straight to Hermès for new equestrian gear and Holt Renfrew to treat myself a little! IC: You can invite 5 people for a dinner party…and the guest list isn’t restricted by the confines of time and mortality.

IC: What was your first car, what do you drive now and what is your dream car? KE: My first car was my grandmother’s hand-me-down. I now drive an E-Bike, and my dream car has four legs, a mane, tail and sounds like “course”. IC: What one piece of advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? KE: Life isn’t linear. It’s okay to take steps forwards, backwards, left, and right. The key is the learning along the way. IC: Who would play you in a movie about your life? KE: Ashley Graham IC: Where is your favourite travel destination and why? KE: I love the South of France. My sister took me there for the first time many years ago and now I dream of driving the windy roads of lavender. I also love Italy. And Whistler. And Maui. Ok, enough. IC: Tell me your favourite joke… KE: Why did the banana go to the doctor? It didn’t peel well. IC: Where is your favourite Vancouver restaurant? KE: I love the Homer Street Cafe. And Giardino. ARTS & MUSIC VANCOUVER’S ICONIC ART SCENE IN REVIEW by Dr. Oliver Finlay

Fantastic performances by Thievery Corporation, Bastille, The Chainsmokers and Charli XCX had heralded the start of the 2019/2020 winter concert series. The Vancouver Opera had opened their season with a sterling performance of Verdi’s La Traviata. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra were lining up an incredible array of world-renowned guest performers for their impending 2020/2021 program. Vancouver’s arts and music scene was in fine fettle. Then the pandemic hit. Live music venues and theatres closed. Our cherished cultural organisations faced an uncertain future and Iconic Concierge cancelled the Spring 2020 edition. Since our last Arts & Music Review, it’s been a long and gruelling road for so many, as the global arts community has rallied and improvised with virtual performances streamed from artists’ homes and empty stages. For the executives that manage the budgets of these organisations, it has been a tough lesson in how to diversify content creation and sharing that may actually serve to boost revenues and mitigate risk in the future. However, not every performing arts company will have made it through the challenging times. For every one of the larger organisations that can attract federal and provisional funding support, there are several smaller or privately owned entities that are still unable to open their doors or secure the financial assistance they require to stay in business. So, as the doors of our theatres, clubs and community centres creak open and the dusty curtains are raised around the province, please support our artists as best you can. In September, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra led the charge back to live events and launched its 2021-2022 season with the “Welcome Back!” Gala Performance. The mood was celebratory, the Orpheum was buzzing, whilst performers and audience alike had to pinch themselves to make sure the first public gathering in over 18 months wasn’t just a dream. Maestro Tausk welcomed back first violin Nicholas Wright and his colleagues to the stage with a suitably vibrant program with timeless classics complemented by more contemporary works. Beethoven’s Fidelio: Overture and Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique: II. Un bal preceded Barbara Assiginaak’s modern interpretation, Innenohr, before Dvoráks Slavonic Dances Op. 72, No2 & & 7 brought a rousing first half to a wonderous conclusion. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 in E minor, Op.64 was the focus after the intermission in what proved to be a fitting return to the Orpheum for the VSO. Less than a week later, the orchestra returned to their Smithe Street residence under the stewardship of Assistant Conductor, Andrew Crust. This time, the vibe was nostalgic, and the magic dialled up to 1.21 gigawatts, as Alan Silvestri’s musical score of the 1985 box office smash, Back to the Future, accompanied Robert Zemickis’ movie masterpiece as it played out on the big screen. Crust encouraged enthusiastic audience participation, as Back to the Future veterans enjoyed the experience alongside younger members of the gathering, who were marvelling at Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd’s timetraveling antics for the very first time. Demand for the VSO’s Telus Movie Nights is always high and the seamless performance fully justified the decision to host three shows over the course of the week. Recently, Our City Tonight TV had the pleasure of featuring two new restaurants, both located in boutique hotels: Alouette Bistro at the Executive Hotel Le Soleil in downtown Vancouver, and BRUNO Restaurant & Bar at the Versante Hotel in Richmond. Both offer a wide variety of creative cocktails and diverse menus. Both are headed by chefs who have been around long enough to confidently follow their instincts, creativity, and culinary love of all things local. BRUNO RESTAURANT & BAR at Versante Hotel is managed by experienced, familiar faces from the food service industry. We are greeted in the bar by General Manager Brad Stanton, who is doing a bit of double duty for us by preparing the featured cocktails. “It’s a culinary journey at BRUNO,” he tells us, “and that starts with the cocktails.” For our “Destination Cocktails”, Brad offers “An Torran” (Tea Leaves Mountain Berry Tea infused Botanist gin, fresh lemon, Giffard blackberry, sparkling wine, soda), a “Jalisco” (Cazadores Blanco Tequila, rosemary infused Cointreau, fresh lime, fresh grapefruit), the “Loretto” (Dried apricot infused Maker’s Mark bourbon, Odd Society Bittersweet vermouth, Peychaud’s bitters, cherry), and a non-alcoholic “Thai Basil Shrub” (Som Thai Basil cordial, fresh orange, fresh lime, cracked black peppercorn, fresh basil.

Moving from the bar to the spacious and elegantly designed restaurant, we are joined by Executive Chef Will Lew, who is Oceanwise certified. “We source locally as much as possible, and embrace those who put all this effort into making this food for us,” Lew says, and you truly taste the passion in the food - from the gorgeously assembled Burrata Summer orchard salad (with stone fruits, berries, heirloom tomatoes, avocado, baby cucumber, walnuts, summer harvest greens and balsamic gelee verjus vinaigrette), to the Truffle Lavender Duck (foie gras, flambe apricots, confit duck croquettes, candied hazelnut crumb, summer figs, and duck glace). As our last dish is being placed on the table, Chef Lew smiles, “I want you to imagine the bottom of the ocean and our BC coastline, this is what it brings us.” For the next 45 minutes we enjoy Pacific octopus, smoked/wild Sable Fish (maybe the best we have had), scallops, mussels, clams, and micro kelp (a favourite of Chef Lew’s harvested on Vancouver Island). ALOUETTE BISTRO, which opened in late summer, is a cozy, inviting room, that instantly makes you feel like France has joined you for the meal. Before dining, we have a seat at the bar to talk cocktails with General Manager, Mark Featherstone. He is a familiar face to those who have enjoyed another one of Executive Table Group’s restaurant, Hydra Estiatorio Mediterranean & Bar (in the Exchange Hotel, 475 Howe St.). For Featherstone, the Alouette cocktails are about France around the world, with different influences from different parts. “We wanted fun, tropical,” he says, and that shows in the three we sample: “Floridita” (Bombay Bramble, St. Germain, lime, ginger ale), “Lavender Paloma” (Patron reposado, lavender, lime, grapefruit soda) and “French 75” (Bombay Sapphire, lemon, sugar, sparkling wine). As for the wine, “It’s all French, all the time,” Featherstone says while pouring our first glass, “but we’ll be adding some French-inspired BC wines to the menu as well.” As we enjoy table-side prepared Beef Tartare (with cornichon, shallots, chives, dijonaise, egg, pecorino, and bread), Executive Chef Albert Tran joins us to chat about what he set out to do with the menu at Alouette Bistro. “We pay homage to French traditions,” he tell us, “with BC influences of local ingredients found throughout the year.” To further that point, he offers two favourites: Coquille St Jacques (with scallops, potato, green bean, watercress, kelp, tomato, and scallop sauce), and Bouillabaisse (with scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, crab, sablefish, fennel, celeriac, tomato, saffron, fresh herbs, rouille, sourdough). Just like the Tartare, these dishes were delicious.

WHERE MODERN ELEGANCE MEETS ICONIC LUXURY

IT IS THE GRAND DAME, the Luxury Castle on the Coast and the Epitome of Elegance on Vancouver Island, sitting proudly at the centre of culture and history in Victoria. The Fairmont Empress. An alluring blend of classic and contemporary, vintage and cutting-edge, the roots of the Edwardian-era chateau, ranked as one of the 21 Most Iconic Hotels in the World, date back to 1904 when its construction started under the eyes of Cornelius Van Horne, the general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It opened its doors in 1908 and was intended to welcome wealthy travellers, arriving on the transcontinental railway and the CPR cruises that docked in the harbour right in front of it. Envisioned by famed architect Francis Rattenbury, the design of the hotel, as so many of Canada’s grand railroad hotels are, resembles that of a spectacular historic manor from France’s Loire Valley and incorporates elements of Tudor, Gothic, Baronial and Edwardian styles. The Empress, as it was called, was the first image a visitor would see upon arrival to the provincial capital, and it didn’t fail to impress.

Over the years, the hotel welcomed many celebrities and royals alike. The Prince of Wales stayed at the hotel in 1919, Winston Churchill added his name to the guest list in 1929, and when reigning royals King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother visited Victoria for the first time in 1939, they, too, stayed at the Empress. Years later, Queen Elizabeth II, and her husband, Prince Philip, would also be guests of the Empress. As for Hollywood stardom, you will find the names of Rita Hayworth, Shirley Temple, Roger Moore, and Katharine Hepburn among many others. By the 1960s, the hotel was clearly showing its age, and in 1966, defying the consideration of demolition, the hotel underwent a $4 million renovation. 20 years later, from 1988-89, an extensive $45 million renovation, known as the “Royal Restoration”, added an indoor pool, spa, lounge, executive suites, health club, reception and port cochère entrance pavilion. 2017 – A Modern Empress In 2014, Bosa Development bought the hotel and started a two-year


renovation project costing more than $60 million. It was the most extensive renovation in the hotel’s history and was completed in 2017. And when the first guests walked into the new lobby with its six-metre-high, 1.8-tonne custom-designed chandelier with 250,000 hand-cut crystals, they were about to experience what is now seen as the crown jewel in the Fairmont portfolio, attracting guests with a fresh, bright and youthfully modern look with a twist.
