Public transport remains the most efficient means of moving people across distances, but it requires passengers to share confined spaces with total strangers for predetermined lengths of time, with limited opportunities to remove themselves from uncomfortable situations.

Passengers may not perceive this loss of control when taking other modes of transport, for example when driving alone in their car, so it is important for transport operators to ease potential anxiety by giving passengers the peace of mind that they and their property are fully secured while travelling.

Passengers in danger of personal harm or theft find little comfort in knowing that video footage is recorded for use in court, if nobody can proactively intervene to prevent the risk in the first place. This is one of many reasons for the public transport industry's shift from forensic (retroactive evidence collection) to real-time digital video surveillance, as operators can stop unwanted behaviour before it can escalate.

In cases of terrorism or violent crime, remedial actions may be considered by the public to be 'too little, too late'. When vehicles are on the move, Icomera’s surveillance solution uses advanced compression algorithms to reduce the data consumed by streaming and accessing footage, with additional options to configure video frames per second (fps), bitrates, and predicted frame (p-frame) technology, ensuring that operators get the most out of their data plan without compromising on video quality.

Extensive Onboard Storage & Remote Footage Retrieval

As part of Icomera’s solution, vehicles are all equipped with secure, high-capacity onboard data storage systems. Storage media can either be removed by hand or uploaded to the operator’s central video data storage server by remote request, saving on unnecessary costs of manual retrieval. Device health can also be viewed directly from the VMS dashboard, minimising the need to perform manual checks on vehicles. Additional savings can be achieved by automatically offloading data over Wi-Fi, either all at once when vehicles are not in service, or incrementally as they pass through station Wi-Fi networks, considerably reducing data expenditure.

Data Verification For A “Single Source of Truth”

Recordings can be requested by time and date and feature hash-check verification to ensure that data has not been corrupted or tampered with, offering a fully secure system for obtaining forensic video evidence. When combined with other devices and systems on the network, operators benefit from multiple sources of information that align to form a single source of truth, which is invaluable in any investigation.

Minimising Service Disruption & Maintenance Downtime

Through real-time monitoring, the prevention of vandalism, theft, violence, and the ability to react quickly in medical emergencies will save money and reduce service disruptions. Additionally, operators will also lower the amount of downtime sustained as a result of manually checking asset health and delays to repair units which have stopped working.

At the heart of the ICONIC VMS solution lies the Video Wall view, which offers effortless playback and recording of as many camera feeds as are needed. Video Walls are fully editable for maximum flexibility and coverage based on the specific requirements of the situation. By viewing multiple live feeds simultaneously, security personnel can monitor and respond to situations before they have a chance to escalate. In the event that forensic information is needed, HD video recordings can be requested by time, date, and vehicle, uploaded to the server from the router, then downloaded by the end user with sufficient access rights.

Live video feeds from each individual camera can be streamed at the click of a button, offering operational data including frames per second, bitrate, date, and time.

Fleets and devices can also be organised into a list under the “Configuration” screen, allowing for a userfriendly way to find vehicles and assets independent of their location.
