Safety & Security
A Vital Concern for Passengers & Operators
Public transport remains the most efficient means of moving people across distances, but it requires passengers to share confined spaces with total strangers for predetermined lengths of time, with limited opportunities to remove themselves from uncomfortable situations.
Passengers may not perceive this loss of control when taking other modes of transport, for example when driving alone in their car, so it is important for transport operators to ease potential anxiety by giving passengers the peace of mind that they and their property are fully secured while travelling.
Passengers in danger of personal harm or theft find little comfort in knowing that video footage is recorded for use in court, if nobody can proactively intervene to prevent the risk in the first place. This is one of many reasons for the public transport industry's shift from forensic (retroactive evidence collection) to real-time digital video surveillance, as operators can stop unwanted behaviour before it can escalate.

In cases of terrorism or violent crime, remedial actions may be considered by the public to be 'too little, too late'. Preventative measures, however, and systems which allow operators’ security personnel to better manage emergencies in real-time, decrease the danger perceived by the public, building confidence in the transport network and its ability to protect its passengers.
The collection of forensic evidence is still a vital component of any surveillance system, however the traditional need to physically remove physical storage media from vehicles is a costly endeavour for operators, requiring additional engineering hours, as well as introducing delays. Additionally, if the image quality does not meet the evidentiary standard required for prosecution, the solution is rendered ineffective. This is where digital video surveillance solutions make all the difference, especially when they offer a combination of high-resolution video footage, powerful compression technology, and extensive onboard storage capabilities with options for on-demand remote data offload.
Introducing ICONIC VMS
As part of the Icomera Network Insights and Control (ICONIC) software suite, Icomera offers a highperformance, integrative Video Management System (VMS) comprised of secure distributed and webbased systems, which can help to enable virtual patrols of vehicles in real time.
Powerful, Preventative Measures
Icomera’s ICONIC VMS allows security personnel to perform “virtual patrols” by viewing, recording, and tracking through real-time video feeds from any connected vehicle’s interior- and exterior-facing cameras, at the click of a button. This enables proactive monitoring of incidents as they begin to unfold and opens the door to fast and effective de-escalation measures before situations have a chance to cause anxiety, damage, or harm.
High Resolution Video Footage
Icomera’s surveillance solution combines industry-leading IP cameras with its high-capacity onboard connectivity platform to ensure that all video footage is captured at the highest possible resolution, even in low-light or high contrast environments, and transmitted without reductions in clarity. This means that all video footage, whether viewed or collected as evidence, will always be fit for purpose and available when needed.
Reliable, Continuous Connectivity & Streaming
Icomera’s SureWANTM algorithm intelligently aggregates all available cellular connections along the vehicle’s route, allowing for better data throughput and stability. This improved connectivity allows operators to reliably live-stream HD video feeds and download footage regardless of the vehicle’s speed or location.
Putting Safety First
Through Icomera’s IcoShape solution, the ICONIC suite gives operators the option to prioritise video surveillance data on the onboard network over data streams used for less critical applications such as passenger Wi-Fi, meaning that video surveillance quality will never drop, regardless of how busy services are.
Compression & Reduced Data Costs When On The Move
When vehicles are on the move, Icomera’s surveillance solution uses advanced compression algorithms to reduce the data consumed by streaming and accessing footage, with additional options to configure video frames per second (fps), bitrates, and predicted frame (p-frame) technology, ensuring that operators get the most out of their data plan without compromising on video quality.
Extensive Onboard Storage & Remote Footage Retrieval
As part of Icomera’s solution, vehicles are all equipped with secure, high-capacity onboard data storage systems. Storage media can either be removed by hand or uploaded to the operator’s central video data storage server by remote request, saving on unnecessary costs of manual retrieval. Device health can also be viewed directly from the VMS dashboard, minimising the need to perform manual checks on vehicles. Additional savings can be achieved by automatically offloading data over Wi-Fi, either all at once when vehicles are not in service, or incrementally as they pass through station Wi-Fi networks, considerably reducing data expenditure.
Data Verification For A “Single Source of Truth”
Recordings can be requested by time and date and feature hash-check verification to ensure that data has not been corrupted or tampered with, offering a fully secure system for obtaining forensic video evidence. When combined with other devices and systems on the network, operators benefit from multiple sources of information that align to form a single source of truth, which is invaluable in any investigation.
Minimising Service Disruption & Maintenance Downtime
Through real-time monitoring, the prevention of vandalism, theft, violence, and the ability to react quickly in medical emergencies will save money and reduce service disruptions. Additionally, operators will also lower the amount of downtime sustained as a result of manually checking asset health and delays to repair units which have stopped working.
Legal & Regulatory Compliance
As legislation continually evolves, it is no doubt beneficial for transport operators to invest in adaptive, future-proof technology which develops concurrently. This delivers peace of mind that transport networks remain legally compliant, passengers and staff remain safe, and operators’ reputations remain protected.
An Attractive Way to Travel, A Safe Place to Work
Promoting safety and security attracts passengers that would otherwise avoid public transport, or feel uneasy about using certain services. Over a third of US citizens would stop doing certain activities due to their fear of becoming a victim of terrorism¹ and a UK watchdog report proved that providing real-time security makes significant impacts on passenger satisfaction and public opinion². Additionally, by providing a workplace where transport staff feel protected, transport operators can improve their employee satisfaction rates and reduce turnover.

Icomera ICONIC Suite
Intelligent Fleet-Wide Network Monitoring & Issue Resolution
ICOmera Network Insights & Control (ICONIC) uses machine learning technology to detect network-related technical faults and raise alerts, allowing them to be investigated & mitigated quickly, while entire fleets are monitored effortlessly through its powerful, intuitive interface.
When a networked hardware fault is detected, an automated alert is raised within ICONIC, allowing for issues to be fixed at the earliest possible point; this offers the dual advantages of increasing system uptime and ensuring that camera feeds are kept connected to the security centre, protecting the operator’s investment.
A wide range of metrics are provided for each alert in ICONIC. It’s possible to view statistics regarding the issue, the location in which it occurred, its type and current status; additionally, ICONIC can provide information on other issues which have been detected historically on the same fleet/system, and other issues which have occurred in the same geographical region.
This wealth of data allows issues to be intelligently predicted before they have any detrimental impact, as well as reducing the time and costs otherwise needed to manually check vehicles for technical faults while they are not in transit.
