Welcome For a record seventh consecutive year Melbourne has been crowned the world’s most liveable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Fresh off the hooves of another successful Spring Carnival and AFL Grand Final week, visitors and locals alike talk of the intangible ‘buzz’ that keeps bringing the world’s best to enjoy Melbourne.

It is of course pleasing that the Victorian Government has continued to invest in the things that matter, what does that mean for you, our network of SME’s? You have more opportunities to win work, such as removing dangerous level crossings, High Capacity Metro Trains, and the Metro and West Gate Tunnel projects.

Just last month we saw the best and brightest of manufacturing gathered at the 2017 Showcase and in the long-standing tradition of IOC Presidents, we too are daring to step out onto that proverbial limb and declare it the best ever.

What gives us the confidence to stand by this bold declaration? 420 attendees, the most in the four years we, together with the Victorian Government, have been Showcasing Victorian manufacturing. And the biggest display set-up with incredible food, beverage, vehicle and sponsorship partners. We look forward to seeing you all, and more, next year.

Victoria University provided the perfect venue as we sat where the future of the industry is being taught to follow in their predecessor’s footsteps.

Creating New Opportunties

A short recap…

Sutton Tools, faced with the harsh reality of competing in a global market were forced to decide, retreat or embrace the challenge.

Suffice to say retreating was not an option, they now export 50% of their production.

Peter Sutton’s message is fairly simple in principal, “embrace the difficult, benchmark yourselves against your industry and seize the opportunities” but it takes courage and commitment to survive, let alone thrive.

Sutton Tools has just celebrated its 100th anniversary and been crowned Victorian Manufacturer of the Year.

Application of the company values flows through the whole Integra organisation. Quite unique and inspirational.

Sean Morley of Impresa House identified the key questions that underpin their business success, what do we need to do to set our business apart? What do we need to do to build better, to deliver a better product for ourselves a better customer experience and what do we need to do protect our business and help it grow? A good place to start.

Innovation is a theme that all speakers addressed throughout the morning, not surprisingly it has been quite fundamental to their success.

Siemens success is underpinned by innovation, Impresa House in setting up world class panellised manufacturing, Glaxo Smith Kline through the development of a new vaccine which has spawned significant business growth, Class Plastics through new product innovation such as anti glug and CME through opening new markets and opportunities.

“For all of us, thinking and acting on Innovation in our businesses is key,” said Don Matthews, Executive Director ICN Victoria.

“All the businesses who have showcased today display the fundamentals of great manufacturing, commitment to quality,

“Don’t stand still, pick your customer and industry partners, and stay focussed,” Brian imparted on the 420-strong audience.

It is one thing to have corporate values framed on the office walls, it’s another to walk away from nearly 40% of business, that’s what Paul Hughes and the team at Integra did when their biggest client’s values didn’t align with their own.

Last year we showcased the positive collaboration example of SRX Gobal, Integra and Australian Precision Technologies. This year we heard from Albins and Goldacres and their experience in collaboration.

These examples are a direct result of discussions that began at Showcase. In addition, Phillip Leslie spoke about the collaboration between Glaxo and Monash University which drove significant opportunity for them.

“I firmly believe that more collaboration between SME’s on mutually beneficial opportunities is a key for the future,” said Don. “What is the secret to a business surviving 100 years”, our Ambassador Gerry Ryan OAM, Jayco asked of Peter Sutton during the second Q&A panel. The answer: passion.

There is something in that for all of us.

Spotlight On Suppliers Kingfield Galvanizing wins Premier’s Sustainability Award ICN Gateway Premium subscriber, Kingfield Galvanizing from Somerton has won the Small and Medium Enterprises category in this year’s Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards for development of a large, automated galvanizing plant with some of the lowest emissions of any similar plant in the southern hemisphere.

Kingfield Galvanizing has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of product per annum through an automated materials handling system that delivers more consistency and, therefore, reduced consumption of chemicals and waste production.

Their new fully enclosed pre-treatment, drying and hot dip galvanizing facilities prevent emissions from entering the

atmosphere. Waste created from the galvanizing process is recycled and re-used, heat from the furnace is reclaimed, water is recycled within the plant and energy consumption per tonne is reduced.

Galvanizing applies a protective zinc coating to steel components to prevent corrosion. The process reduces maintenance requirements and the life cycle cost of an asset, delivering long-life, sustainable and predictable performance for steel in exposed installations or marine environments.

Melbourne company, eWater Systems, won the night’s top honour - the Premier’s Recognition Award - for developing water splitting technology which is used to clean and sanitise facilities such as hospitals, schools, manufacturing businesses and restaurants chemical free.

The Premier’s Regional Recognition Award was presented by the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Lily D’Ambrosio to Exemplar Health, which developed Bendigo’s new hospital, regional Victoria’s largest.

The project integrates sustainable thinking into all elements of the site’s design, construction and systems to create a healing and therapeutic environment.

Sustainability Victoria’s interim Chief Executive, Stephanie Ziersch, said the awards showed how management of environmental issues was of growing importance for not just individuals, but businesses.

“Each year, the Premier’s Sustainability Awards continue to discover Victoria’s best and most inspiring Victorian individuals, organisations and businesses which are developing and implementing new sustainable practices.”

“Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.

Your contributions will have positive longterm effects on our society and our way of life.”

Projects These targets seek to ensure that 25 per cent of the State’s electricity generation comes from renewable sources by 2020, rising to 40 per cent of generation by 2025.

“The first step is recognising the need to implement these targets, the second is to set about making sure they are achievable by optimising investment, jobs and local economic value form renewable energy projects and supporting participation by local supply chains,” said Don Matthews.

$49b Worth of Opportunities for Local Manufacturers Victoria is the home of Australian manufacturing, and whilst the sector has been forced to adapt to a dynamic and changing environment, manufacturing maintains its resilience. The Victorian Manufacturing Showcase held in October featured a number of manufacturers that have successfully transitioned into new sectors or built stronger positions in the domestic and global market place.

Public projects offer a great opportunity for local suppliers. There are currently 80 projects with strict local content requirements on offer ensuring local businesses and workers get their fair share of the work. Valued in excess of $49 billion, 70 of these projects are already underway.

A multitude of multibillion dollar infrastructure projects are underway or in the pipeline. Some more high profile than others but all open to a full and fair tendering process. For example, the $5 billion Level Crossing Removal Project, with local content requirements set above 90 percent, offers many opportunities for local suppliers.

Following are some of the public works packages already awarded and the successful contractors who will be seeking suppliers to deliver these projects: • Caulfield to Dandenong line: Aurecon, CPB Contractors, Lendlease, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff in alliance with LXRA and Metro Trains Melbourne • Thompsons Road Duplication and Grade Separation Project: BMD Construction • Mernda Rail project: John Holland • North Eastern Level Crossing Removal Program: Laing O’Rourke, Fulton Hogan and Jacobs • Melton Highway: BMD Construction • North West Level Crossing Removal Program: John Holland and KBR • Western Level Crossing Removal Program Alliance: McConnell Dowell, Arup and Mott McDonald.

In addition to the above, the $10.9 billion Metro Tunnel Project will deliver twin ninekilometre rail tunnels from Kensington to South Yarra, travelling underneath Swanston Street in the CBD, linking the Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham line. The project also involves the construction of five new underground stations. The Victorian Government is also investing a further $2.3 billion in the High Capacity Metro Train (HCMT) Project to introduce 65 next-generation trains into the metropolitan Melbourne fleet.

Expressions of Interest are open for competent, capable, qualified and experienced suppliers across all levels of the Australasian supply chain to participate in the Melbourne Metro Rail projects. Products and Services opportunities also exist for competent, capable and qualified local suppliers with the requisite skills, experience and capabilities to supply subcontract products and services to the HCMT Project.

Events Winning Work Workshops

West Gate Tunnel Project Briefings

Our Industry Advisor, Colin Young recently facilitated three workshops in the Latrobe Valley region focussed on building skills in tender writing and winning government work.

These workshops coordinated by RDV Gippsland, the Latrobe Valley Authority and the Industry Capability Network, in conjunction with Latrobe City, Wellington and Baw Baw shire councils were very well received with a capacity of more than 50 businesses participating in the full day workshops held in Sale, Morwell and Warragul.

“Our aim was to help local businesses understand the government tendering processes, how to engage with government agencies and market their products or services to create new business opportunities,” Colin said.

“We look forward to providing more professional development opportunities in the future.”

The West Gate Tunnel Project is a city-shaping project that will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, provide quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks off residential streets. Grants of up to $500,000 are available under the Future Industries Manufacturing Program to assist companies to implement new manufacturing technologies and processes that provide a critical foundation for: •• Generating sustainable new local jobs, including high value jobs •• Improving productivity and international competitiveness and •• Targeting growth opportunities.

Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT)

Aims to support the workers, communities and businesses affected by the closure of large scale passenger manufacturing through supporting capital investment by businesses located, or wishing to locate, operations in Melbourne’s North, West and South-East and the Geelong Region.

Funding of up to $2 million is available to support job creating projects, with a minimum co-contribution of $3 for every $1 granted.

Automotive Supply Chain Transition Program (ASCTP) Eligible supply chain companies receive assistance to develop and implement a plan for transition.

Applicants must be a Victorian based business trading (continuously since May 2013), and derive at least 20 per cent of revenue from new car manufacturing by the three local car manufacturers (Ford, Holden and Toyota) and their supply chain.

Support for individual supply chain companies will be capped at $71,000: • $16,000 to develop a Business Transition Plan • Up to $55,000 for Business Transition Services to implement the Plan’s recommendations.

Applicants must select a Business Specialist/s from the approved panel to deliver their project. business.vic.gov.au/asctp

Sector Growth Program

New Energy Jobs Fund

The $20 million New Energy Jobs Fund will support Victorianbased projects that create long-term sustainable jobs, increase the uptake of renewable energy generation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive innovation in new energy technologies.

The Sector Growth Program provides grant funding for Victorian-based projects that align with future industries sector strategies. The program comprises two funding streams: up to $100,000 is available for scoping, planning and feasibility studies, and up to $1 million is available to implement projects aligned with the future industries sector strategies that will generate new jobs and increase competitiveness of Victorian businesses.
