Malaysian Public Policy Competition 2018

Over 120 Malaysian students gathered at Sunway University to participate in the Malaysian Public Policy Competition (MPPC) 2018. Held on 25th and 26th August, this year’s competition focused on ‘Urban Regeneration’, with Urban Mobility, Community, and Environmental Sustainability as its sub-themes.

Officiated by the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Yang Berhormat Dr. Ong Kian Ming and the Provost of Sunway University, Professor Peter John Heard, the first day of MPPC 2018 saw 24 teams of aspiring young Malaysians present their policies to a panel of judges before being led to refining their policies series of engaging workshops and mentor sharing sessions. Contestants were kept on their toes as day two upped the ante with a secret semi-final round, in which participants were challenged to give a 3-minute presentation to the judges summarising their newly refined policies from the first day.

Yang Berhormat Michelle Ng, the State Assemblywoman of Subang Jaya were among the judges of the semi-final rounds. The semi-finals were followed by a short panel session discussing the sub-themes of MPPC 2018, and subsequently, the Grand Final.

At this stage, five outstanding teams contended to deliver their best presentations possible to MPPC’s panel of distinguished judges, including Dr. Elizabeth Lee, the Senior Executive Director of Sunway Education Group.

While the judges deliberate on the teams’ performance, MPPC’s closing address was delivered by Yang Berhormat Yeo Bee Yin, the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change. Finally, the winners of the competition were announced, with teams Orca, Spill the Tea(m) and Ho(e)lee Chen taking third, second and first place respectively.

On behalf of ICMS, we would like to formally thank the organising committee of MPPC 2018, as well as the many volunteers who shared their weekend with us to make this event a resounding success.

Past Events A Day in EY

On the 10th August 2018, ICMS organised A Day in EY, a case study event, in collaboration with our Partner, EY in Menara Millennium. At 6.00 p.m., a networking dinner provided participants with the opportunity to network with fellow participants, interns as well as company representatives from EY. The networking dinner also panned out as a platform for participants to understand more about the work and culture in EY before stepping into the main event happening next, the case study.

The event started off with a speech providing a high-level overview of EY by Ms. Lee Soo Fern, Partner, Malaysia Talent Team and ASEAN Diversity & Inclusiveness Leader. The emcee followed by laying out the rules of the case study and explained how each stage is arranged to give participants a better idea of their competition. The participants were then split into predetermined groups of approximately ten members to complete the various cases which included one of the 3 main themes, namely — sustainability, blockchain and cyber-security.

The teams worked diligently and cohesively under time constraints to solve challenging business cases and produce their findings. Ramping up the event was a presentation by the groups to the panel of judges, who acted as the clients and also other teams who took up roles as different stakeholders in a company.

The event ended with an insightful group feedback session by the judges, followed by the prize giving ceremony. The group photo marked the conclusion of another successful event and ICMS hopes to continuously deliver more meaningful and impactful engagement sessions for Malaysian youths.

Past Events

Hong Kong Pre-Departure Gathering 2018

On the 4th of August, freshmen and seniors gathered in Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) for the Hong Kong Pre-Departure Gathering 2018.

Aspired to provide insights of living in Hong Kong and to foster new friendships, this event attracted 40 participants from across Malaysia. The event was launched after Lee Khang Sek, the Hong Kong (HK) Chapter Deputy National Executive Director, gave a warm welcoming speech.

Soon after, the event continued with an ice-breaking game “Group Juggle”, where participants were required to introduce themselves to each other.

Interactive activities such as Cantonese Tongue Twister and quizzes were prepared by the organising committee, making the event extremely heartening.

Sharing sessions were slotted in the day as well. Seniors briefed the participants on the important documents that are required to bring when furthering their studies in Hong Kong as well as introducing the different tourist attractions and the campus lifestyle in Hong Kong.

Since the mingling session was the last activity of the day, participants utilised the time to interact with both seniors and their peers. The event came to an end after a video closing speech by Chow Joo Yan, the HK Chapter National Executive Director.

ICMS would like to extend our greatest appreciation to all the participants that attended this event as well as a huge shout out to the organising committee for making this event a success!

Upcoming Events Virtual Workshop Series

ICMS Hong Kong Chapter is proud to present the Virtual Workshop Series. This new initiative aims to provide a virtual platform for Malaysian scholars to listen, meet and talk to distinguished speakers.

Three virtual workshops will be held over the course of three months starting from September to November.

The first workshop will host the topic "Humancentred Approach in Social Enterprises’ Consultation" by Mr Howard Ling, Chief Consultant from Hong Kong Council of Social Services - HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre (SEBC), highly experienced in providing professional consulting services to diverse social enterprises.

ICMS Special Feature Alumni Network Committee

Following the official establishment of the newly restructured ICMS Alumni Network Committee (ANC) at the beginning of January 2018, the September Newsletter would like to feature the ANC as well as the various initiatives under the Committee.

ICMS Alumni Network Committee comprises of 2 main umbrellas, the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee, each playing a vital role in ANC with their respective purpose. The Board of Directors manages the Alumni Network and provides strategic guidance to the present Council Leaders. In particular, the Advisory Arm adds value to the Council by providing ad hoc advice and establishing long-term goals, whereas the Connect Arm encourages interaction between all past and present members of ICMS through social gatherings and joint initiatives with the ICMS Academy. On the other hand, the Audit Committee upholds the Council’s accountability through reviews of ICMS’ constitution, financial status, and code of conduct.

The first half of ANC’s term in 2018 saw the fruition of various initiatives, which include the pilot Mentorship Programme, that pairs a mentor from the past Councils to a mentee from the 8th Council to allow ICMS Associates to form personal connections with their respective mentors and gain insights in career, leadership and intellect. Other initiatives by the Advisory Arm and Connect Arm of ANC include Joint Quarterly Meetings, the Strategic Blueprint and various engagement sessions that focus on exchanging ideas and professional experiences.

ICMS’ greatest asset has been and will always be our Associates. As ANC steps into the second half of the term, they will continue their efforts to increase the value of an ICMS Associateship by fostering close communication and collaboration between the Alumni and Associates.
