Dear ICHS Family, As we embark on the next 100 years of Immaculate Conception High School, I reflect on those who came before us and how grateful we are for their strength and perseverance. They provided the foundation that today’s ICHS young women can build their future on which includes their character and morals. I am proud to say that the 2015-2016 enrollment is the largest in my twenty plus years at Immaculate Conception High School. First and foremost I must thank the Felician Sisters who continue to sponsor the school. The Felician Core Values of Compassion, Solidarity with the Poor, Peace and Justice, Transformation, and Respect for Human Dignity are instilled in our students from our first encounter. Each year brings an excitement that fuels the passion in everyone associated with ICHS. As our enrollment increases; as our athletic teams win more championships; as our drama department continues to amaze us on stage; and as our graduates continue to attend extremely competitive colleges and universities and become successful young women in an ever changing and challenging society, we are reminded that their foundation is being built here at ICHS. Our graduates are now enrolling their daughters in ICHS so they can walk the same hallowed halls as our alumnae. Although the wall color may be different, the course of study may have changed, the one constant that brings them back is the VALUES that are instilled in them. Immaculate Conception High School has found its niche. You will read incredible stories in this edition of the Spirit magazine that will give you a glimpse of the happenings at your alma mater. Share with us what is new in your life. As I always say, “You don’t need an invitation and you don’t need to make an appointment. Just stop in and visit your alma mater.” Through Mary’s Heart,

Marc Schrieks, Deputy Chief of Staff at Bergen County Executive Office presented the school with a proclamation celebrating our 100th anniversary. He shared, “As the former mayor of Lodi and now as a representative of Bergen County, I am honored to be here and celebrate these amazing honorees tonight.” Alumna and 2013 Hall of Fame recipient, Jane M. Wojslawowicz ’64 presented the Women of Distinction Awards to Sue Ann Marchese Debiak ’66, Dana LoIacono Regan ’88, Susan Nogaj Matteson ’93, and Sister M. Aquinas Szott ’59. Thomas Mann, ICHS faculty member and 2013 Hall of Fame recipient presented the Hall of Fame awards to Kathryn Cheski Menezes ’95, Robin Dellraria Manzo ’73, Sister Antonelle Chunka ’54, Dianne Traflet ’81, Jeffrey Horohonich, Anastasia Katechis ’00, Charles Weir (posthumously), and Suzanne Weir. Each recipient spoke eloquently about how ICHS has positively impacted their lives. There were laughs, tears, and cheers! Guests included family and friends of the recipients, members of Felician University, Felician School for Exceptional Children, Felician Services, Inc., and two tables of Felician sisters that were generously invited to join us with Religious Benefactor tickets purchased by school alumnae. Many alumnae shared tables and enjoyed mini “reunions” to celebrate the spirit of ICHS including groups from the 1960’s, 80’s, and 90’s. They reminisced about old times, school classes, and enjoyed seeing their former teachers.

One guest asked a former principal, “How about we all join together in the school song?” “The ICHS 100th Anniversary is an important and exciting milestone to be celebrated with our honorees who continue to share the mission and vision of ICHS. It is also the best opportunity to give special recognition to the Felician Sisters, with the night’s highest honor, the Centennial Award.”, shared Joseph R. Azzolino, President/Principal. Sister Mary Alicia Adametz ’64, former ICHS principal, accepted the Centennial Award on behalf of the Felician Sisters. To culminate a night of school spirit, fond memories, and heartfelt wishes, Sister Marilyn Minter offered a joyful benediction and encouraged guests to sing along to “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge. She danced her way back to her table while guests clapped and cheered for ICHS! Along with dinner and awards ceremony, the evening included a cocktail reception and mega raffle drawing. The mega raffle winners were chosen by ICHS students, Arianna Azzolino ‘16, Nina Beatrice ’17, and Amanda Leger ‘16. The gala had a record breaking year, raising over $25,000 for the school. All proceeds from the gala dinner will support ICHS mission to educate and transform students into young women of competence, compassion, and commitment in a Catholic Felician-Franciscan tradition of leadership and service. “What a spectacular year-long celebration of 100 years of educating young women in our community. Congratulations to ICHS and a wish for 100 more years!” shared Sue Ann Marchese Debiak ’66, Women of Distinction Award recipient.

Save the Date! ICHS gala dinner and awards ceremony will be on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at The Estate at Florentine Gardens. We are just getting started on the next 100 years of ICHS!

Reach For the Stars, Pursue Your Dreams, and Follow Your Heart

Immaculate Conception High School held its commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 6, 2015, in the Felician College Auditorium, with Thomas Mann presenting 48 young women to receive their diplomas from Joseph R. Azzolino, President/Principal. After a beautiful invocation by Ashley Griglak, her classmate Valeria Alvarado delivered the salutatory; and Rebecca Cestaro gave an inspiring valedictory speech. Regina Houghton Deible, ‘81, charmed the audience with a lovely commencement address about paying it forward, not defining yourself by who you are right now, and that your journey has just begun. Regina’s current role is Medical Science Manager for Abbott Vascular Medicine where she works with world leaders on advancements in cardiovascular care. Many alumnae from past years, along with a few from the Class of 1965, processed behind the graduates in recognition of ICHS’s 100th Anniversary year. Robin Dellraria Manzo ’73 welcomed the ladies into the ICHS Alumnae Association. Joseph R. Azzolino congratulated the graduates in his remarks, and Sister Mary Ann Jacobs, IC’s Board Chair, ended the ceremony with a divine Benediction. Sister M. Aquinas Szott ’59 and Courtney Dansbach ’14 presented Katrina Flood with the 23rd Blessed Mary Angela Award. Katrina was recognized as the student who most emulates many of the qualities of Mother Mary Angela, the

foundress of the Felician Sisters. Blessed Mary Angela was a scholar, a person of culture, a deeply religious person who loved God and her country. She always looked to help those who were less fortunate. Prior to graduation, the Class of 2015 gathered in the Immaculate Conception Convent Chapel for their Baccalaureate Mass. Fr. Joel Szydlowski was the presider and homilist. The Felician Sisters Choir led by Sister M. Virginia Tomasiak sang angelically, and Sister Maria Magdalena Vallellanes sang a stunning version of the Ave Maria. At the conclusion of the Mass, each graduate was presented with a special statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The celebrants with their families and friends, faculty and staff, attended an Awards Dinner following the Baccalaureate Mass. Stephanie DiLeo, Katrina Flood, and Maria Ines Montano-Velez received the American Citizenship Award, which recognizes students who give evidence of qualities educators would hope to instill in all students. Evelyn Senaldi presented the Dr. and Mrs. Angelo Senaldi Memorial Scholarship to Christina Hein. Dominque Chaffin presented the Anthony J. Gilio Memorial Scholarship to Erin Sabat. Amanda Saab received the ICHS Athletics Scholarship presented by Jeffrey Horohonich, ICHS’s Vice Principal/Athletic Director. Mr. Horohonich also presented the Bergen County Women’s Coaches

Association (BCWCA) award to Erin Baker and Samantha Krakower. Erin Sabat also received the Sister Mary Seraphica Aspiration Award which is presented to a student excelling in the performing arts with love, devotion, patience, pride, and a sense of leadership. Christina Hein was also awarded the Sister Mary Michelle Krug Spirit Award, being recognized as a young lady who best exemplifies spirit in living life to its fullest, never taking anything for granted, being strong in mind and character. The 48 graduates of the Class of 2015 were awarded more than $3.9 million in scholarships and grants. All graduates will be attending a college, university, or an academy to further their studies. We are honored that Maria Montano-Velez will be entering the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. The majority of the class will begin programs at local college and universities including Seton Hall University, Rutgers University, NJIT, Montclair State University, Caldwell University, Saint Peter’s University, Monmouth University, and Felician College. Out of state colleges and universities include Northeastern University, Alfred University, Penn State, University of Rhode Island, Dominican College, Louisville, University of Tampa, Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Johnson and Wales, Bryn Mawr College, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, State University of New York at Stony Brook, University of New Haven, and University of North Carolina. Congratulations to the ICHS graduates. Make a Difference. Live the Dream. Relish the Adventure. Conquer the Unknown. Make your Mark. Stand Strong. Happy Graduation!

Student Activities

ICHS Student Council

Congratulations to the members of the Immaculate Conception High School 2015-2016 Student Council who were inducted this year. The ICHS Student Council is an extra-curricular activity for students who are willing to learn about leadership and democracy. The student council helps share students’ interests and concerns with school faculty as well as represents many of the school’s core values including transformation and compassion. Amanda Roldan ‘16, Student Council President, addressed the student body and shared “I am humbled by your confidence that I will be able to lead and represent you as president of the student government for the 2015-2016 school year.”

Thank you for your service and leadership!

A Note

from Amanda Roldan ‘16

“It is an honor to be student body president. In this role, I am able to represent ICHS and carry out their mission to demonstrate love, compassion, and sisterhood. It’s exciting when we get together as a team to try and create an event that will be memorable for the student body. It brings me much joy when I see my classmates enjoy all our planned school activities such as Field Day, Halloween Candy Contest, Pep Rallies, and my favorite Christmas festivities. I am most grateful, because this position has allowed me to interact with not only my peers from each grade level, but also teachers, faculty, and staff members. I consider myself blessed.”

New school, new friends, and new experiences at ICHS This fall, all ICHS students continued the longstanding tradition of Big Sister/Little Sister Day. The peer support program includes all grades and continues throughout their four years of high school. Big sisters and little sisters meet throughout the year and pair up for activities, celebrations, and most importantly friendship. Through this program, upper classman will be able to provide much needed guidance to underclassman and as a result, students create lifelong bonds outside their immediate circle of friends. Big Sister-Little Sister Day was all about making great memories with your “sister.” A special luncheon was held to celebrate. What a fun ICHS tradition!

Immaculate Conception High School Hosts

17th Annual Senior Class Pasta Dinner This fall, Immaculate Conception High School Seniors were serving up dinner for their annual Pasta Dinner. With the support of Inserra Shop-Rite Supermarkets, Giresi’s Caterers, Venice Bakery, and Il Villaggio Caterers, over 200 guests enjoyed dinner and dessert. The grandparents of Arianna Azzolino ’16 generously donated and made over 900 meatballs for the dinner. The ICHS Senior Pasta Dinner has become a popular school event. Guests enjoyed good food, lively conversation, tricky tray, and raffle. All proceeds help to defray the cost of the senior prom, which may otherwise be unaffordable to some students. From students and parents, to faculty and grandparents, everyone worked together for a lovely evening celebrating the spirit of ICHS. Joann DePeri Beatrice ’79, Senior Class Advisor shared, “This night has taken on a life of its own over the years. It is about more than food and prizes; it is a celebration of a group of students who have learned, grown, and laughed together through their high school years at ICHS.”

All the World’s a Stage

From the yellow brick road to a mid-town office building, the theatrical productions at ICHS showcase the Broadway caliber talent of our students. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz directed by Lisa Valdez Cupeles 93, tells the story of Dorothy and her journey home, along the way meeting some very interesting friends. The ICHS students and staff transformed the auditorium into Oz with set design by school Art Club guided by Rachel Kehoe, art teacher. The cast dedicated nights and weekends to rehearsals culminating in a standing ovation for each night’s performance.

DeGennaro ’06 and Frank Borelli. Twelve Angry Jurors depicts a jury forced to consider a homicide trial. With emotion filled performances, the girls captivated the audience with their passion and acting skills night after night. Set designer Tara DeAngelo, ‘09 and crew This fall, our girls took a dramatic turn with their depicted a mid-century high rise office for the backdrop production of Twelve Angry Jurors directed by Katelyn of the play.

Goes PINK

for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

On the first day of October, ICHS students and staff kicked off a month of activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Dressed in their best pink attire, students held a pink bake sale at lunch time and attended an assembly in the afternoon. Breast cancer survivor and ICHS alumna, Angela Sacco Fava ’81 spoke with the students about her diagnosis, treatment, and survival journey. Angela shared that ICHS provided her with the foundation of faith and compassion that has stayed with her through her life and her recent diagnosis. As she battled cancer, Angela had the continued support of her husband, children, and family, including her sister, Elvira De Rosa ‘78. Knowing her daughter, Jessica, an ICHS faculty member, had a passion for educating and inspiring others, Angela felt it would be a great opportunity for her to bring her knowledge and strength to ICHS to share with the young women. Also, in attendance was Dr. Deena Graham, Angela’s oncologist. Both women shared the importance of early detection and regular check-ups. Wearing pink does more than raise money for breast cancer; it raises awareness. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-most common cancer overall. So no matter who you are or where you live, understanding breast cancer is important.

All funds raised from the pink bake sale to the pink dress down days in October were donated to The John Theurer Cancer center at Hackensack University Hospital in Hackensack, NJ. By showing their compassion for breast cancer survivors and a commitment to their health and women’s health issues, our students continue to show that ICHS core values are present in every activity at school.

Collegiate Academy Be Brave. Take Risks. Nothing Can Substitute Experience & New Adventures ICHS Collegiate Academy is a co-ministry sponsored project with Felician University and a recognized program for upperclassman with academic talents offering more than a traditional high school learning environment. Juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher are invited to participate in Collegiate Academy and take college level courses while still enrolled in ICHS. Students can register for any offered course at Felician University, however, many take english, math, psychology, and other 100 and 200 level electives. The program runs for 12 months of the year and ICHS students attend classes during the regular school day, at night and during the summer at the Lodi and Rutherford campuses. Felician University offers a per credit discounted rate to Collegiate Academy enrollees. While many local public and private high schools have recently begun to roll-out this type of learning program, ICHS has been an academic leader by offering this program with Felician University since 1983. Formerly known as Project Forward, ICHS is proud to have paved the way to a unique learning environment for our students. This fall, ICHS registered students for over 79 classes; the most in the programs’ history. By giving academically talented students the opportunity to take university level courses, we are strengthening their educational experience and encouraging them to step out of the mold of a “traditional” high school student and expand their horizons to be a forward thinker, a confident student, and a capable adult. An ICHS alumna, Khiana Duncan ’14 graduated from ICHS and received her bachelor’s degree from Felician University in a combined 6 years, because of her opportunity to participate in the Collegiate Academy program. “The Collegiate Academy program provides our students with a much greater vision of their own potential futures and what it takes to succeed at a competitive college and beyond.” shared Marissa Moore, Director of Guidance. Marissa spearheads the program at ICHS and works collaboratively with Nicollette Matesic, Cohort Coordinator, Office of the Registrar at Felician University. Arianna Azzolino ’16, ICHS student and member of Collegiate Academy shared, “Felician University courses coupled with my education at ICHS have inspired me to think differently and believe in my own abilities. Collegiate Academy is a great way to transition into college.”

Thanks to the Collegiate Academy at ICHS, our graduates arrive onto college campuses with not only more confidence that they can handle college coursework, but a number of college credits toward their degree.

Four Reasons to Participate in ICHS Collegiate Academy *Expanded course selection *Academic challenge *Affordable tuition *College credit while still in high school For more information about the ICHS Collegiate Academy Program, please contact Marissa Moore at mmoore@ichslodi.org

Giving Wishes Wings: Origami Club

In honor of ICHS 100th Anniversary, the Origami Club set an ambitious goal to fold 1,000 origami paper cranes. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand cranes will be granted a wish. The Japanese refer to the crane as the “bird of happiness”. Infused in each crane are prayers that affirm our Felician Core Values of Respect for Human Dignity, Compassion, and Transformation, Solidarity with the Poor, and Justice and Peace. ICHS alumna, Coreen Lanza Sabat ’80 shared, “Our hope is that our cranes carry wishes far enough to be heard, and our prayers are realized in the rhythm of their wings for another 100 years of ICHS.” With the help of our entire student body, faculty, and staff this three year goal was completed. All gathered together in the school cafeteria where everyone present folded one crane. The collective endeavor further added to the power of our prayers and carried us to the completion of our task. Members of the Origami Club including Arianna Azzolino ‘16, Nina Beatrice ‘17, Erin Sabat ‘15, and Renee King ‘18 crafted origami hearts for the students at Felician School for Exceptional Children (FSEC). MaryAnne Protzo of the FSEC then made a lovely mobile out of the hearts that is now displayed in the FSEC cafeteria. In addition to the anniversary project, the Origami Club folded hearts for the Felician School students, envelopes that held Bible passages for the Felician Sisters Infirmary, and hearts and cranes for beloved Blue Wolf Sisters, Sophomore Maddie Pandolfi, and alumna Connie Walters. The Origami Club also made an Advent Calendar for Christmas, red dresses for Women’s Heart Health Awareness, pink cranes for Breast Health Awareness, and an exquisite May crown for our Blessed Mother, the Queen of Peace.

Lunch with the

Felician Sisters

Immaculate Conception High School hosted a festive luncheon for the Felician Sisters as part of their annual Mission and Heritage Week activities. Joseph R. Azzolino, President/Principal, welcomed the guests and thanked the Sisters for their continued support of the school. The luncheon was held in the ICHS cafeteria and almost 30 Felician Sisters enjoyed light conversation and a buffet lunch with current students and staff. The purpose of the lunch was to express the gratitude of the ICHS Community for establishing and sponsoring ICHS. Sister Angelica shared “The lovely setting, the great meal, and the finale: a lovely pink rose made the afternoon so special for us!” The luncheon concluded with a “thank you” cake and a group photo to commemorate the wonderful afternoon. The luncheon took place during ICHS’ Franciscan Heritage Week, which acknowledges and celebrates Saint Francis of Assisi and Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska both of whom have inspired countless people to serve the less fortunate with compassion, readiness of spirit, and generosity of heart in response to God’s love.

ICHS Athletics

I’m an athlete and cheerleading is my sport!

Cheerleading is a complex sport which involves acrobatics, precision moves, and perfectly timed dance sequences. The Immaculate Conception High School Cheerleaders hit the mat daily to practice and perfect their routine working as a team and leading their way to competition victories around the state and the nation. Captains Gabriela Collazo ’16 and Brianna Incorvaia ’16 shared, “It’s not about being the best, it’s about being better than you were yesterday.” The ICHS squad competed in the New Jersey Small Varsity category and brought home an unprecedented number of awards and is gearing up for more trophies this year! From winning 1st Place at United States Cheerleading Finals in Pensacola, Florida to 3rd place overall in the nation, the ICHS cheerleaders took their spirit and dedication to the mat each and every competition. Cassandra Mercado ’17 and Brianna Ramos ’17, members of the squad shared, “This was single-handedly the season of change. There is an unconditional love that surrounds our team, especially on the mat.” For the first time in ICHS history, our cheerleaders ranked in the top 3 in New Jersey for non-public school squads. Coach Sherry Batelli shared, “Words cannot express how proud I am of all the girls and all they have accomplished. I hope that I have taught them to not take their sport for granted and to work hard every moment.” ICHS cheerleader, Brianna Incorvaia ’16 is being recruited by several D1 and D2 colleges and universities for cheering. All of the ICHS cheerleaders have brought so much Blue Wolf Pride to ICHS! Three cheers for ICHS!!!

Dribble, Rebound, Shoot … SCORE! The Immaculate Conception High School basketball team dominated the court with their Blue Wolf pride. Perseverance on and off the court lead the ICHS basketball team to win the Non Public North New Jersey State Sectionals in 2015. They also participated in the Bergen County, NJ Finals with other local high school teams. Head Coach Jeffrey Horohonich, along with Assistant Coaches, Ralph Colon and Lindsey Lopez, ‘09 insist that the players learn the proper techniques and refine those skills over time. Through practice and dedication the team has withstood the challenges that stiff competition has brought to the court. All grades are represented

on the team and junior Khay’la Latimer ’17 shared, “Playing with my basketball sisters has been an integral part of my high school years. Our team is united in one goal to always be the best.” The spirit of the team is summed up in the following anonymous quote, “Behind all the hours of practice and all the coaches that pushed you, there is a girl who shot the ball and fell in love with the game ... and never looked back!”

From the dugout to the mat, ICHS athletes scored for our school! Forget the glass slippers, these girls’ wears cleats!! The Immaculate Conception High School Softball team welcomed another win for a “three-peat” in the New Jersey State Championship for the 3rd year in a row. Victories were had in 2013, 2014, and 2015 and the team is eagerly anticipating another winning season in 2016 for an unprecedented 4th win of the New Jersey State Championships. Along with coaches, Kelsey Hannan, ‘09 and Jodi Valenti, Head Coach Jeff Horohonich have set their sights on a fourth win for the upcoming season. The girls are committed and train all four seasons to achieve their victories year after year. “Our team is dedicated to excellence and works together on building their skills.” shared, Head Coach and ICHS Vice Principal, Jeffrey Horohonich. Not only do sports promote health and wellness, as well as encourage friendships and leadership, they offer educational opportunities as well. ICHS student, Gabriella Slade ’15 received a softball scholarship to University of Rhode Island to study and play at the prestigious New England school. Additionally, Lea Georgatos ’15, Nicolette Kupersmith ’15, and Samantha Krakower ’15 went on to attend Alfred

University, Kean University, and Stockton University respectively to represent ICHS in softball. Congratulations to the ICHS Softball Team!

ICHS Swim Team Dives Into Victory The Immaculate Conception High School Swim team recently splashed into the record books. With their last win, the swim team set a school record by qualifying for the New Jersey State Finals for the first time in the school’s history. With over 25 students from freshman to seniors, the team won 8 of the 10 swimming events at the girl’s high school level. Captains, Jacqueline Grace ’17, Gina Gryskiewicz ’16, and Amanda Roldan ’16 along with team members practice at the local Lodi Boys and Girls Club. The team captains shared, “Swimming is a team environment, you’re not just relying on yourself, you’re counting on your teammates to do well too.” and they couldn’t be more proud of their recent success.

He stresses that what they’ve built in this pool goes beyond any meet.

According to Coach Chad Sajnoski, “We’ve shown that young women, when they get together, can do amazing things.”

When you set your standards higher, you’re going to reach those goals. It’s just you and the pool … keep swimming girls!!

Campus Ministry

ICHS Campus Ministry is committed to cultivating the faith of our students. Campus Ministry fosters personal spiritual growth, encourages participation in life of the Church, and seeks to enhance and develop lifelong faith formation. Throughout the year, ICHS students participated in several mission driven activities.

Digs for a Cure

Felician Sisters Mission in Haiti

The students supported the Felician Sisters Mission in Haiti by participating in a school wide dress down day to raise money for the “Give the Gift of Clean Water” program. The girls also ran a clothing drive and were able to provide the sisters with many boxes and bags of clothing for those most in need.

The ICHS Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams supported Digs for a Cure to raise money for Breast Cancer research. During the Varsity and JV games at Felician University, Rutherford, the ICHS girls set up a bake sale including homemade cupcakes, brownies, and cookies. The girls also created banners for Breast Cancer Awareness and wore pink ribbons and socks to show their support. Over the course of 3 years, ICHS has held fundraisers to raise money for Breast Cancer Research from selling t-shirts, to hosting bake sales, and school-wide dress down days. From all their efforts, the girls made a $5,000 donation to Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey.

All Souls Day

Youth Group, Christians in Action

A “City on a Hill” is how Sister Alexander Siegel described Immaculate Conception High School to those gathered to celebrate and remember the Felician Sisters in this Centennial Year of the high school since the sisters’ cemetery sits well below the school and across the river. She said, “As the students processed to the cemetery, we continued to silently recall all our loved ones who have gone before us. We are standing on their shoulders, those who built all that we have here at this campus, it was their faith, their vision and their dream that we inherited this beautiful campus and mission and today, we honor them.”

The ICHS Youth Group, Christians in Action, had the privilege of working with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal. In the fall, the girls volunteered at Our Lady Queen of Angels Convent Soup Kitchen handing out Thanksgiving dinners to those who most likely would not have one. In addition, the girls helped decorate and prepare the dining room for dinner, hand out cookies and hot chocolate, and sing for over 150 people waiting on line. It was a wonderful day of forging new friendships and putting our core values into action.

The students and staff of ICHS along with the The Felician Sisters gathered in Immaculate Conception Convent on Monday, November 2, to commemorate All Souls Day. The Prayer Service included a procession of representatives from each grade level, faculty and staff, as well as the Felician Sisters. Each representative also carried cards with the names of the deceased and a candle. Following the scripture reading from the Book of Wisdom, Brittany VanderGroef ‘17 sang “You Raise Me Up,” accompanied on keyboard by Sister Virginia Tomasiak.

Reconnect and Renew Reunion 2015

Over 275 ICHS alumnae and friends attended the Reconnect and Renew 100th Anniversary Reunion celebration this past March. From Felician Sisters, to Board Members, to former faculty and students, to community friends, the celebration began with mass at the Immaculate Conception chapel led by Rev. Joel Szydlowski, OFM with Deacon Nick Valdez. Father Joel in his homily reminded the guests how important it was to be grateful for their experiences in high school and to make every effort to “pay it forward” as the years passed by. During mass, the new time capsule was blessed. The mass ended with a rousing rendition of the ICHS school song and procession from the chapel to the high school. Guests gathered in the gymnasium for a “pep rally” and spectacular performance from the ICHS cheer squad. Following the cheer routine, guests enjoyed a champagne toast and welcome by Joseph R. Azzolino, President/

The 100th Anniversary Reconnect and Renew – Reunion was held on March 7, 2015. Principal. He shared “100 years of amazing women have graced this school and we are so grateful for your continued support and love for ICHS. Here’s to another 100 years!” Robin Dellraria Manzo ’73, President of ICHS Alumnae Association and Katrina Flood ’15, President of Student Government also spoke to the guests and shared their love for ICHS. It was an honor to also welcome the mayor of Lodi, the Honorable Bruce Masopust to join in the celebration. Throughout the afternoon, alumnae reconnected and renewed old friendships. From sharing photos of grandchildren and children to taking tours of the school and seeing old classrooms, former students enjoyed being back at ICHS for the day. With much excitement, the time capsule that was buried in the fall of 1965 was opened in front of all the guests including many members of Class of 1966. Among the articles in the capsule were a school uniform, 1965 yearbook, pennant, pin, detention slip, report card and scrapbook.

You Can’t Google That

Presented By Joan Hanzl Sommer ‘68 at Reconnect and Renew: Reunion 2015 On this auspicious day, I will try to elucidate Events that occurred from 64 thru 68. The principal, I remember, Amadeus, a Felician Sister But today her counterpart is Azzolino, a mister? My homeroom numbers included 16, 25, and 27 And weekly Mass we attended, each Friday, around 11. With the outdated slide rule I did conversions in chemistry, And from Sr. Aurea, in Latin, I learned Veni, Vidi, Vici. But centennials deserve more ponderous thought, Not simple recall of names, numbers, or declensions we were taught. Into our personal time capsules we all must reach For ICHS memories that formed you and me, each. They cannot be wikipeadiaed, googled, or accessed by an app, They helped form what I call our “Inner Core” map. In my time capsule I retrieve such a memory Of Sister Rosalma in the class biology. Her powerful lesson was what we were learning Was not just for that day, or for a grade we were earning. “Girls, this is your future, a rousing Rosalma did say, As she told us about something new call DNA.

“Discoveries, they will come, to the world where you will liveSo as women, be prepared, with a point of view to give.” From 1965-fast forward to fifty years plusCan you dispute her passionate words to us? Also in my time capsule I see here tucked below My stint with the school paper IC High Echoes. With Sister Ellen at first as our guide We learned to write wisely, meet deadlines and work side by side. A life lesson I learned from Sister Carolyn Marie, During my senior year in American History. We had lost a King and a Kennedy between April and June, A tearful Sister Carolyn mourned lives taken so soon, What she taught us while tears rolled down her face? Was that we were all one people, one human race. So each ICHS girl, past, present, and future Carries her own time capsule uniquely within her. Filled not with objects like saddle shoes or a beret senior hat, But with character-forming memories-so distinctive-you can’t google that.

Alumnae Reflections:

Lenore Parrott Luckey ’65 , MS, RDN, CFS Looking back, our four years at ICHS represent a very small fraction of our lives. But that fraction provided us not only with the core values of leadership and service of the Felician/Franciscan heritage but with tools for life: a solid work ethic, resilience, fortitude, perseverance and a strong foundation in our Catholic faith. In the end, we become the culmination of all of life’s experiences, both good and bad. It’s not what happens to us that defines who we are but how we manage it and then learn from those lessons. What is most important is to take control of our destinies. Learning to give back to others with our time, talent and treasure is also part of who we are. There may be times when our treasure will be less available for sharing with others, and that’s ok. Using those times to give of our time and talent, whether to the ICHS Alumni Association (i.e., Career Day, contributing to Spirit, or volunteering/attending Taste Of, etc.), to our parishes or congregations, or to our professional, academic or civic organizations, whatever the calling – the experiences are rewarding and greatly appreciated. Certainly, the Class of 1965 has made its mark on society by giving back as teachers/college professors, nurses, journalists, registered dietitians/ nutritionists, engineers, mathematicians, Sisters, mothers, administrative assistants, actresses, and countless other professions and vocations. As Immaculate Conception High School concludes its 100th Anniversary educating young women, may we honor the 5500 alumnae, living and deceased, from that first class of 21 through the Golden Class of 1965 with its 120 graduates to this year’s Class of 2015 with 48.... In an era where most all-girl institutions have either closed or merged with all-boy-schools, IC has endured by changing with the times. Could it be that the “students of the Sixties” helped to forge the changes that have kept ICHS viable in this 21st century?” Ad multos annos.

In Memory ICHS Board Member, Charlie Weir, always had a smile on his face. Whether it was attending a board meeting, watching his daughter cheer, or helping to move a piano across the room; Charlie’s smile was always there. Charlie brought out the best in everyone he encountered. He was always ready to lend a hand. He was an adoring husband, loving father to three beautiful children, and built a very successful business. Charlie believed that the only way to fully enjoy life is to share what you have with others. The ICHS community is immeasurably better because of Charlie. We will miss him.

A Taste of 2015

For over 9 years, the ICHS Alumnae Association has hosted its annual “Taste Of” celebration to support tuition assistance and scholarship programs. The ICHSAlumnae Association has awarded over $60,000 in scholarships because of the success of the Taste Of.
