Introduction 01

iCEV is a digital curriculum provider that focuses on creating engaging course materials for use in Career and Technical Education (CTE). iCEV places a particular emphasis on helping educators meet their course standards, prepare their learners for industry certifications, and overall give them everything they need so they can focus on what matters ---

STUDENT SUCCESS!

To this end, iCEV offers educators a comprehensive curriculum solution that they can access on a subscription basis. With the iCEV curriculum, educators can teach courses in some of the most prominent CTE career clusters.

Typically, an iCEV course consists of lesson plans, videos, slide presentations, student handouts, projects, check for understandings, assessments and more. Each course is wellrounded, in-depth, and contains all of the resources necessary to fully educate your learners in a particular content area.

With these lesson materials, iCEV focuses on bringing experts to the classroom to provide insight into practical, real-world concepts and skills. This usually takes the form of demonstration videos, video interviews or career interviews with industry professionals.

The iCEV curriculum library contains thousands of hours of content spread across more than 200 courses.

Now that you have a general understanding of what iCEV is, the next step is to elaborate on the curriculum’s vernacular, to familiarize you with how it functions.

Although the iCEV curriculum is different from a textbook, the two share similar structures and components. Some of the components of the iCEV curriculum---as well as their textbook equivalents---include:

Course Playlists - Textbooks

Lessons - Chapters

Segments - Subchapters

While there are more components to the iCEV curriculum, these three are a good place to start in order for you to gain your bearings when navigating our platform for Proclamation 2024.

Course Playlists

Course Playlists contain all of the lessons for a particular topic, and could be seen as the equivalent of whole textbooks with the depth of content they offer. Each course playlist consists of all the content needed to meet the standards specified in a particular Proclamation 2024 subject area.

How is the iCEV Curriculum Structured? 03 www.icevonline.com

Lessons

Lessons are the chapters of an iCEV Course Playlist. Each lesson within iCEV focuses on a set of specified learning objectives, presents information in a video or multimedia format and includes supporting pedagogical materials and resources such as daily lesson plans, assessments, projects, and more.

Segments

Segments are portions of an individual iCEV lesson, similar to a subchapter within a textbook. For instance, a slide presentation-based lesson may include three segments of content in the presentation. Dividing the content into segments allows for learning objectives to be focused upon and tested for on an accompanying Check for Understanding specific to the segment.

Pedagogical Resources

Now that you have a grasp on the structure of the iCEV curricul um, what comes next is to introduce you to the specific pedagogical resources that compose the various lessons, courses, and course playlists within iCEV.

Planning Resources

Planning Resources are documents designed to save you time and ease the planning process when preparing for class. These documents help you structure your class, meet course standards, and spend less time planning and more time engaging with students. These documents include:

Pre-built Lesson Plans are your roadmap to follow when using iCEV lesson materials. These step-by-step documents provide a daily scope and sequence of utilizing the iCEV lesson materials and include classroom management tips such as bell ringers, exit tickets, and considerations for special populations.

TEKS Alignments include a suggested pacing guide as well as show the TEKS which are met by each lesson found in the course playlist. Special Population Strategies Guide can ease the challenge of meeting the needs of every student by equipping you with strategies and tactics to help all students succeed.

In addition to these resources, iCEV has also added Materials Lists to the alignment documents of courses that involve lab work. These Material Lists specify which activities, projects and labs will require additional supplies to function, and what those supplies are.

Multimedia Lesson Types

Every lesson is composed of engaging multimedia designed to remove the physical barriers of the classroom and introduce students to valuable concepts and skills. Multimedia components of an iCEV lesson often include:

Videos bring the real world into your classroom by demonstrating knowledge and skills through industry leader and expert insight.

Slide Presentations present lesson content in easy to understand bullet points to provide your students with the information needed to master introductory to technical concepts.

Hybrid Lessons combine video and slide presentations to provide learners with a more wellrounded experience that balances the real-world expertise of industry leaders with the easy-tograsp concepts in a presentation lecture.

Instructional Materials & Interactive Assignments

Instructional Materials are resources designed to be used during class to introduce and engage students with course content. Interactive Assignments are student-facing resources you use during class to allow students to apply what they’ve learned and be graded on their performance. These instructional resources and assignments include:

Vocabulary Handouts help students identify and define terms essential to the comprehension and understanding of the lesson.

Key Concepts present the main ideas of a lesson in a modified Cornell note taking method to ensure students can identify the main concepts of a lesson, answer the Essential Questions, and have a blueprint for how to take good notes.

Student Handouts are used to support topics covered in the video/slide presentation in more detail to give students a deeper look at what they’ve learned.

Activities encompass a wide variety of short-term assignments, from filling out graphic organizers to full lab experiments. This assignment type offers opportunities for hands-on learning and can often be gamified.

Projects are more long-term, rigorous assignments focused on students applying and utilizing the concepts learned in a lesson to prove understanding.

Career Connections are video interviews with industry professionals designed to provide students with a closer look at the career opportunities related to concepts learned in the lesson.

Each activity and project is accompanied by accommodations, mod ifications, and extensions to help differentiate your instruction. These materials also allow educators to print and have a copy for students who need a printed version for IEP or 504 plans. In addition, there are also Text-to-Speech and Translate features included in the curriculum to help ELL students navigate.

Now that you have an understanding of the basics of getting started with iCEV, what comes next is for you to learn how to use iCEV in several classroom settings.

With its well-structured, flexible course materials, it’s easy to engage students in your classroom using the iCEV curriculum. There are a few main strategies to accomplish this.

Using a Flipped Classroom with iCEV

Besides traditional instruction, you can also use iCEV to flip y our classroom. A flipped classroom is one where students are int roduced to learning material prior to coming to class, whether through videos, readings, labs, or other activities.

This frees up class time to be used to deepen understanding through discussions with fellow students or projects and activities facilitated by the instructor.

When it comes to flipping your classroom with iCEV, you may:

• Have students watch an instructional video prior to coming to class. They can complete a digital worksheet alongside the video so you can make sure they have watched and understood the course material.

• In class, you can start a class discussion for students to review the concepts presented in the video.

• Afterward, have students complete the Activity or Project that accompanies the segment specified in the iCEV lesson plan.

• Lastly, get your students to complete that segment’s assessment in class.

Make sure to use the digital lesson plans that correspond to each iCEV lesson. These lesson plans lay out a scope and sequence for each lesson, and can be used to assist in planning for a flipped classroom model.

How to Use iCEV for In-Person Instruction 27
www.icevonline.com

Using a Blended Classroom with iCEV

Alternatively, you can try using a blended classroom in place o f traditional classroom instruction. “Blended” classrooms incorporate both teacher-led and student-led learning experiences, which take place both online and in classroom settings.

There are many advantages to teaching a blended classroom, including the opportunities it offers for small group instruction, h ow it allows each student to take charge of their own learning experience, and how it lets students move at their own pace and lea rn in the ways that best fit them.

Some of the blended learning classroom models include:

• Station Rotation - where students are split into small groups and complete learning objectives by rotating through different stations around the classroom.

• Individual Rotation - where students rotate through stations around the classroom, but on individual schedules set by the teacher, rather than in small groups. If you design each station to suit a particular kind of learning style, this can be a great way to keep students learning in the ways that suit them best.

• À la Carte - where the instructor develops a list of potential activities or projects students can choose from to complete. Students will then go on to complete their choice of activity within a set time period. This allows for greater student choice in their own education.

You can implement any one of these models by drawing from the many curriculum resources iCEV provides.

For instance, if you wished to try the Individual Rotation model with iCEV, you could have each station in your classroom contain a different iCEV resource. One station could have a video for students to watch, another a teacher-led demonstration, the next a quick activity, and the last a group project for students to work on.

On the other hand, if you want to try the À la Carte model, you could find those lessons within the iCEV curriculum that offer multiple different projects or activities. Simply give your students the choice of which activities they wish to complete in order to test their skills.

Reinforcing Hands-on Learning When Using Digital Curriculum

Whether a curriculum is digital or print, reinforcing the hands-on learning components that make CTE impactful can be challenging.

When students experience online instruction, the best way to keep your students on their educational toes is by incorporating hands-on learning to amplify the learning experience.

Four ideas to reinforce hands-on learning and allow students to apply what they learned include:

1. Have students demonstrate the skill, process, or concept covered in the video or slide presentation component of the lesson.

2. Find field trip opportunities where students are exposed to the concepts learned in class.

3. Games are a great way to make learning fun and interactive. Incorporate games into your lessons to further enhance student understanding of the material.

How to Use iCEV for Hybrid Learning

Whether your school regularly implements hybrid learning or changes unexpectedly occur, iCEV allows you to effectively engage students in high-quality learning experiences that equip them with valuable knowledge and skills.

As a digital curriculum solution, iCEV is designed to fit any le arning environment, including hybrid modality. Hybrid, or blend ed learning, combines traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with online learning.

Some of the ways you can use iCEV in a hybrid learning environment include:

• On days when students are remote, you can have them watch instructional videos or go through slide presentations on their own in order for them to learn about new concepts.

• When students are in the classroom, you can have them take part in class discussions or hands-on activities so they can develop their newfound understanding and skills.

Because the iCEV curriculum is completely digital, it has the fl exibility to be used when in-class instruction becomes impossib le due to weather or other emergencies. In cases like these, students can even participate in collaborative activities or projects by scheduling online video calls.

Overall, combining classic teaching techniques like presentations and lectures with engaging educational technology gives students new and exciting ways to learn. On top of that, you’re better able to fit the unique needs of all your students regardless of their learning environment.
