Carpe Diem was surveyed on 7th October 2023 with no material defects noted.

Crew moved the vessel from Crinan Basin to Ardfern Marina (7nm) and reported smoke / engine overheating.

At Ardfern the water pump was found to be unserviceable and a new water pump and impeller installed.

02Engine Overheat - Second Trip

Second Trip

After the water pump repair we checked the engine was drawing water as part of routine start up.

We moved about 4nm travelling at 7knots / 1,200 RPM when the engine began to lose power, smoke and steam.

An emergency tow back to Ardfern Marina by RIB (rather than calling the RNLI).

Welded Hoist Frame

Weighing in at 467kg, the engine required a hoist to be welded and the removal of the cabinetry in the saloon and companion ways (beech and holy/oak sole).

The engine well contained about 100L of oil/water/coolant/hydraulic fluid and transmission fluid which had to be drained.

The oil drained from the engine was tested to ensure no metallic residues.

Engine subassemblies removed.

Once dry, the engine bay was degreased, steam cleaned, primed and repainted in red oxide and metal white paint.
