Catalonia, and its capital city Barcelona, host around 4,000 productions per year, ranging from small short films or photo shoots to international feature films and TV series. Our success as a strong production hub in the Mediterranean is not only due to the wide array of attractive and versatile locations on offer. We are home to first-class audio-visual professionals and companies that make projects come true. Multilingual crews used to working in the most time- and costeffective ways, combined with a passion for filmmaking, a commitment to work at the highest possible quality standards and renowned hospitality have contributed to creating longlasting relationships with film professionals that choose our territory as a favourite destination for their projects. Barcelona Film Commission and Catalunya Film Commission are pleased to present this guide as a peek into the locations, companies and production support that you will find when you bring your production to Catalonia.

20% TAX REBATE FOR INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS Feature films, TV series and animation productions that spend at least 1 million euros in Spain are eligible for a 20% tax rebate, as long as they meet the following requirements:

•

The production services must be carried out by a company registered in the official Catalan or Spanish registry of audiovisual producers. • Qualifying expenses directly related to the production: a) Expenditure on creative staff provided that their tax residence is in Spain or in a European Economic Area Member State, capped at 100,000€ per person b) Expenditure on crew, technical industries and other suppliers • The total amount of the incentives applied cannot exceed 50% of the production cost, which must be of at least 2 million euros • The production must not be considered a Spanish national production

Procedure: the refund must be applied for by the Spanish company, during the month of July of the year after the end of filming. E.g. end of shooting: October 2019 / tax rebate request: July 2020 / Tax rebate refund: within the next six months after the submission of the request. This incentive is capped at 3 million euros, which means the maximum deduction base is 15 million Euros. There may be changes in the legislation which regulates this incentive. It is advised to take any accounting, legal or investment decisions upon further consultation with legal advisors that can assess your production in deeper detail. The current applicable legislation is Article 36.2 Law 27/2014 dated the 27th of November, on Corporation Tax. Rebates for investments in film and audio-visual series productions and live performances and music shows.

COPRODUCING WITH CATALONIA ICEC (Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies) is the agency responsible for supporting film production and cinema in Catalonia. Audio-visual projects that contain Catalan elements may apply for Catalan Regional Funds in the form of non-refundable grants that are compatible with other available funds (MEDIA, EURIMAGES, IBERMEDIA, ICAA). Development Funding Development support for audio-visual projects, from feature films to TV drama, TV documentaries or animation series. Also interactive documentaries. Production fund (fiction and documentary) Four different lines of funding: a) Fiction • Feature film projects with commercial ambition aiming at international audiences. • Feature films originated and creatively led by Catalan talent - directors, writers, producers- the content of which may express Catalan culture in some way. • Intended for smaller feature film productions, which are likely to take more artistic risks. b) Documentary Auteur documentaries that will have a theatrical release. Television fund (fiction and documentary) Fiction made-for-television productions (movies, mini-series and series). TV Documentaries Animation fund Animation productions, intended for television (series and movies) and theatrical release (feature films). Short films fund Fiction, documentary, animation and experimental shorts as well as international co-productions. P&A fund Funds for producers to enhance the promotion of films in Catalan original version.
