INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY

1st October

Promoting the right to a safe & healthy working environment in the coffee supply chain

Our commitment: Promoting sustainable, responsible and inclusive workplace practices

In 2014, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) declared October 1st as the day of “celebration of the coffee sector’s diversity, quality and passion” and as “an opportunity for coffee lovers to share their love of the beverage and support the millions of farmers whose livelihoods depend on the aromatic crop.”

The ICO and all its members and partners from the private sector and civil society share the same vision: The coffee sector is a crucial anchor for development and a driver of prosperity and sustainability. Producing and drinking coffee helps to make the world a better place by generating jobs and income in over 60 coffee producing countries and for millions of people worldwide engaged with the coffee sector (not to mention happiness for millions of coffee lovers!). Respect for workers and compliance with labour standards are the foundations of decent work and an integral part of ensuring universal human rights.

“All workers deserve to enjoy conditions. This implies, as a minimum, rules for working hours, adequate payment of wages and effective monitoring of health and safety at work. The coffee sector, which employs millions of people around the world, can be a model of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, where all workers are treated with dignity and respect.”

ICO and ILO partner for the realization of fundamental principles and rights at work in the coffee sector

A celebration of the coffee sector’s diversity, quality and dedication, International Coffee Day is an opportunity for coffee lovers to share their passion for the beverage and acknowledge and support the work of millions of coffee farmers, as well of all those women and men engaged in producing, trading, retailing, and serving coffee.

The ICO and the ILO play a complementary role in promoting the realization of and the need for sustainable, responsible and inclusive workplace practices. Therefore, the 9th International Coffee Day is a unique opportunity to focus on workplace health and safety to protect the well-being of coffee workers and ensure a safer future for all.

quality of life.

Launched on the occacion of the ICD 2023, the #CoffeePeople campaign will seek the direct involvement of some producing and consuming countries, international organizations active in the coffee sector, coffee brands and celebrities.
