More great news! Our Dr. Lawrence was just named a Top Doctor in Kansas City’s Ingram’s magazine. He was nominated by peers and then selected by judges. Dr. Lawrence has dedicated his expertise to patients at Research for many years but he also voluntarily shares his skills and knowledge nationally to support the prevention and treatment of heart disease. Develop Our People Welcome New Physicians and Leaders Nathan Melton, DO will be joining Research Orthopedic and Reconstructive Specialist November 13.

He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and specializes in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery as well as sports medicine, general orthopedics and fracture care. Dr. Melton obtained his medical degree from Oklahoma State University, completed his residency and internship at Grandview/Southview Hospital in Dayton and his fellowship at the University of Cincinnati. He also cares for patients at Lee’s Summit Medical Center where he has been on the medical staff for several years.

Lisa Conrad, PhD has been named Director of Pharmacy. Her new role includes pharmacy leadership at Research Psychiatric Center, Research Medical Center and Research Brookside Campus. Lisa has more than 25 years of experience as a pharmacist and for the past six years she has been Director of Pharmacy at RPC. She graduated from the School of Pharmacy at UMKC and has a broad range of health care pharmacy experience. In addition to being board-certified in pharmacy, she is certified in LEAN Six Sigma.

Nyla O’Neal, PhD recently joined the blood cancer team at Research Medical Center as an oncology pharmacist. Nyla came from University of Kansas Medical Center where she spent twenty years providing support for the hematology oncology and transplant programs. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and is board-certified in oncology and pharmacotherapy. Her background and experience will be a tremendous asset as we continue to advance our blood cancer program.

Chelsea Rodenberg, MD recently joined Research Medical Center as an Emergency Medicine physician. Dr. Rodenberg earned her medical degree from East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and completed her residency at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. She holds professional memberships in both the Emergency Medicine Residents Association and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

ClaytonWood, DO recently joined Research Medical Center as an Emergency Medicine physician.

Dr. Wood earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He holds professional memberships in the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Medicine Resident Association.

Jacque Euritt, MSN, RN is rejoining us as the Associate Chief Nursing Officer. Jacque most recently has served as a nursing director at Centerpoint Medical Center with responsibility over the Emergency Department, Nursing Supervisors, Float Pool, Discharge Lounge and a 22 bed Medical Telemetry unit.

Prior to this she was the director of the Emergency Department here at Research Medical Center. Jacque earned her BSN from Deaconess College of Nursing and her MSN from Research College of Nursing.

Achieving the Gold Standard, Again Get With The Guidelines® Stroke - Gold Plus Honor Roll

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognize this hospital for achieving 85% or higher compliance with all Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Achievement Measures, and 75% or higher compliance with five or more Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Quality Measures for two or more consecutive years and achieved Time to Intravenous Thrombolytic Therapy ≤ 60 minutes in 75% or more of applicable acute ischemic stroke patients treated with IV tPA and Time to Intravenous Thrombolytic Therapy within 45 minutes in 50% of applicable acute ischemic stroke patients treated with IV tPA to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Build Our Brand Dr. Stephanie Graff and Doreen Lacey, RN Discuss New Mammogram Guidelines on KCTV 5 KCTV 5 turned to Research Medical Center expects following the American Cancer Society’s release of new mammography guidelines, indicating women should start getting mammograms at 45 years-old instead of 40 years-old and skip the routine manual breast checks by doctors.

Oncologist Stephanie Graff, MD recommends women still get their baseline mammogram at age 40. She also suggests women should discuss breast cancer risk factors with their doctor when deciding at what age to begin receiving annual mammogram. Breast cancer survivor and cardaic nurse at RMC Doreen Lacey, RN shared her personal story of how receiving a mammogram saved her life.

2015 Kidney Walk Kansas City, MO and Wichita, KS In October, Research Medical Center’s Transplant Institute teams in Kansas City, MO and Wichita, KS took live-saving steps at the 2015 Kidney Walks. At the Kansas City walk, RMC teamed with Megan Twait and Ashleigh Moulder, two RMC transplant patients. Ashley received a new kidney and pancreas in April 2014 while Megan is currently on the donor waiting list.

Deliver Exceptional Care Research Medical Center’s 2015 Adopt-A-Family Program The holiday season is fast approaching. For some Research Medical Center employees, they do not have the means to provide their families with a bright holiday season this year. Your generosity and bountiful spirit make it possible for many families to enjoy and celebrate the holiday season. Last year, 26 families benefited from the collective generosity of 19 departments and physician partners.

We are now planning the 2015 Adopt-A-Family program. If you are an Research employee who would like to be considered for adoption, nomination forms are now available and may be picked up in the Pastoral Care office on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please complete and return form to Pastoral Care office by November 13. All family adoptions are managed confidentially.

If you and those in your department are interested in helping adopt a Research family, including those who work at the Brookside Campus and Research Psychiatric Center, please contact the head of your department or Pastoral Care Department at 276-4120 by November 13. Welcome Nursing Residency Program Students Research College of Nursing

On October 1, Research Medical Center and Research College of Nursing leadership teams welcomed 27 newly graduated nurses to the new 12- month Nurse Residency Program. This program is designed to support new nurses as they transition into their first year of practice as registered nurses in an acute care hospital setting. The core content focuses on three critical areas: leadership, patient outcomes and professional role.

Residents meet the first Thursday of each month using a combination of small group discussions called, “Tales from the Bedside,” led by facilitators combined with large group activities emphasizing current discussion topics. After six months, the residents begin working on evidence-based practice projects with assistance from Research College of Nursing faculty.

Graduate nurses are accepted into the program three times a year with the program beginning in February, July and October.

“Sarah took such special and extraordinary care of my adult (special needs) son. She listened, was attentive to every need and request that was made. She stood out among all the highly qualified nurses in our 12 week experience at RMC. Sarah set the bar for what one would identify as a “perfect nurse” – she exemplifies a “healer’s touch.”

Employee Grateful for Employee Assistance Fund The Employee Assistance Fund has helped more than 2,000 employees through financial hardship since 1994. One member of the Employees Contributing to Help Others (ECHO) Team, recently found herself needing financial assistance after her child’s neurological disorder suddenly worsened. She found herself on a sporadic work schedule and exhausting all PTO because her child needed round the clock care.

“I was between a rock and a hard place. I am a single parent and things got very difficult. My child had been in and out of the hospital and I was not able to work.

I didn’t receive a full paycheck for nearly six months.”

With limited income and three dependents living in the household, utility bills and rent soon went unpaid. Without anywhere else to turn, the longtime ECHO contributor decided to request access to the Employee Assistance Fund.

“Pastoral Care was kind and considerate and kept everything confidential. I was able to be open and honest with them.

I did not feel any type of judgement for not being able to save money from previous checks. The ECHO team provided funds to pay my utilities and rent.”

The recipient and her family are now financially stable thanks to the Employee Assistance Fund.

The Employee Assistance Fund is available to employees of Research Medical Center, Research Brookside Campus and Research Psychiatric Center. The fund helps employees in emergency financial need due to an injury, an illness or a natural disaster. Thank you to all ECHO contributors. You truly make a difference in the lives of fellow Research employees.

The Research Foundation’s 11th Research Royal Roast To celebrate Research College of Nursing’s 110th anniversary, The Research Foundation is hosting the 11th Royal Roast on Saturday, November 14 at the Ritz Charles in Overland Park, KS. The Royal Roast is held every two years and is an opportunity for physicians, nurses, and community friends to come together for an evening of fellowship and fun while supporting nursing student scholarships.

This year’s Royal Roast, “A Night of the Arts,” is chaired by Orthopedic Surgeon Lance “Richard” Snyder, MD and wife Tiffany.

“We are honored to chair this event in support of The Research Foundation’s Nursing Scholarship program,” said Tiffany.

The event includes a cocktail reception, dinner, silent auction and art fair featuring 14 local artists. Artists will donate 25% of their total sales to support nursing scholarships for students attending Research College of Nursing and Rockhurst University joint nursing program.

“The planning committee hopes to raise over $75,000 in net proceeds to support student nursing scholarships,” said Cynthia Randazzo, President of The Research Foundation.

“My husband recently had a few days stay in your hospital. We want to express our thanks to you and your Staff for the excellent care we received. The night nurse was great (very busy) but I was always able to get her when needed. I would like to share a few of our experiences. ALL of the staff were kind, helpful and courteous and professional. My husband was taken by ambulance to your hospital. Upon arrival we were greeted by the Chaplain, a very kind lady who did much to make us as “at ease” as possible. (Even stopped in later to see how we were doing) This meant a lot to us!! The Emergency doctor that was on duty came out to give us updates. From there, we moved to ICU and had a fine nurse there. (Samantha, I believe.) They ran tests to find out what was going on and she would tell us what they were finding.

The next day they moved him to the 6th floor. He was in a big room, and they even gave me the option of a bed, as I stayed with him. I slept in a recliner chair next to him. We had good care upstairs. I nominated a nurse on 6th floor that we both felt was one that went “above and beyond” what was expected. (Amanda) The care was excellent, food very good, nice cafeteria. In all we would rate our hospital stay VERY GOOD and your hospital #1. Thank you for being there, and for the manner in which the people helped us. They were EXCELLENT. Thank you.”

Note from Lee’s Summit Medical Center Nursing RE: Pulmonologist Michael Chacey, MD

Dr. Chacey filled in recently and we appreciate his willingness to step in and help. I do have to mention a couple situations that made me sing inside: We had a patient on North that has been complaining of SOA. The first thing she said to Dr. Chacey was I’m not any shorter of breath today than ever. “No one understands, when I swallow I’m short of breath and there is something there.” He immediately pulled up her CT and noted that her esophagus was completely blocked with food and was spilling over in her lungs. He went back to her bedside, informed her of his findings, he called her doctor from the patient’s bedside and discussed her care. This patient melted...what had been bothering her for months had resolution.

She nearly cried that someone took time to take such gentle care of her.

We also had a very young asthmatic that was taking Zolair, a medication that costs almost $4,000 per injection. She had stopped taking it because she couldn’t afford it even after insurance, the cost of injections. Dr. Chacey called her regular pulmonologist and then called the office staff to set her up for a benefit that Missouri Cigna offers to cut the fee down to $15. The patient was crying with joy!

On another note, Dr. Chacey never missed foaming in and out . . . huge in my eyes and huge for patients! I do have to say it was a wonderful few hours. Never once did Dr. Chacey let on that his day started at 7am. He was very gracious to each of our patients

Hope Family Care Clinic Hope Family Care Clinic (HFCC) was recently granted a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike (LAL) designation by the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Primary Health Care.

Being recognized with a FQHA LAL designation allows HFCC to continue to provide high quality preventive and primary health care to patients regardless of their ability to pay.

In addition, the Clinic offers reduced pricing on prescription and non-prescription medications for outpatients.

Emergency Preparedness Education CODE PURPLE: Patient Elopement Code Purple is designed to alert hospital staff of an unexpected, intentional disappearance of a patient. When announced, staff should go to the nearest exit, stairwell or elevator to monitor if any patient is attempting to exit the building.

If a situation arrises and a Code Purple needs to be activated, please call the hospital operator at *44444 and say “Code Purple” with the location the patient was last seen and detailed description of the patient.
