We’ve earned multiple honors recently. Our Infertility Clinic under the leadership of Dr. Starks was just named the only Aetna Institute of Excellence in the entire state of Missouri. Our Dr. Higgins was named a Healthcare Hero by Ingram’s Magazine for his lifetime of service to patients and the community. Research Medical Center was honored as a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign for our efforts in patient-centered care. Our School of Radiologic Technology Ray Bowl team took first place in a competition at the annual Missouri Society of Radiologic Technologists Annual Conference. I’m sure there’s more!

We’re honored to introduce several new physicians to our medical staff. You’ll see them pictured on pg. 4. And our new Gyn Oncology Clinic opened last month. It now has up-todate, beautiful space that mirrors the outstanding care Dr. Hicks and Dr. Weed deliver. You will be hearing more about the clinic’s Virtual Grand Opening Event soon!

New Physicians Marjorie “Wongs” Wongskhaluang, MD, recently joined Infectious Disease Associates of KC at Research Medical Center. Previously Dr. Wongs was the Clinical Instructor, Hospital Medicine at the University of Missouri. She earned her Medical Degree from the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. Dr. Wongs is board-certified in Internal Medicine and board-eligible in Infectious Diseases. To reach the Infectious Disease Associates of KC, call 816-822-8486.

Neurosurgeon, John Clough, MD, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond. He went on to the University of Kansas Medical School to not only complete a medical degree, but also to participate in post-graduate studies in the areas of neuroimmunology, tumor immunotherapy, and pathology. After completing an internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Dr. Clough went on to do a neurological surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. Infertility Clinic Named Aetna Institute of Excellence Infertility Specialist Gregory Starks, MD, and our infertility clinic earned designation as the only infertility program in the entire state of Missouri to be named an Aetna Institute of Excellence. This means our infertility and IVF (in vitro fertilization) programs meet and exceed Aetna’s Institute of Excellence program criteria that includes high standards for scope of services, birth rates, and protocols professional staff follow. Our infertility services are helping a lot of women have a healthy pregnancy who otherwise may have never been able to have a baby. Ingram’s Magazine Heros in Healthcare Vascular and General Surgeon Edward (Ted) Higgins, MD, was honored for his compassion, competence and quality of care during his life time of healthcare service at Ingram Magazine’s 12th Annual Heroes in Healthcare Awards Breakfast.

Dr. Higgins was one of three physicians in the greater Kansas City area selected for this honor. Dr. Higgins is a board certified surgeon at Kansas City Vascular and General Surgery, a part of the Midwest Physicians network, an affiliation with HCA’s Research Medical Center and Menorah Medical Center.

Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality Research Medical Center was awarded Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign at HRC’s Corporate Equality Celebration. This letter is in regard to the housekeeper Stephanie -- this lady should be called “Ms. Mister Clean.” I’ve been taught at a very young age to clean up behind myself, which I’ve made a habit of that during my stay.

But no matter how clean I get my room, it ends up being 3x’s cleaner when she is done. Stephanie is just an all-around, versatile lady. Stephanie is a huge asset to this hospital. (Research Psychiatric Center)

“I wanted to let you know my daughter delivered twins at RMC last Wednesday. She and the twins received excellent care from the OB and NICU nurses. One of the twins was discharged from NICU yesterday and hopefully the other will be discharged tomorrow. I am very proud of the RMC staff for their level of care they provided for the entire family – and definitely appreciate the ability for them to “room-in” so they don’t have to drive in from Lee’s Summit several times a day to the RMC NICU. The physicians are exceptional – Gregory Starks, MD, and his NP Brandi, Bradley Sullivan, MD, the Neonatology physicians and NNPs, and of course the Family Medicine Faculty and Residents.”

“I had surgery today with Gregory Starks, MD, and was cared for after in the west outpatient services. My experience with the two discharge nurses was amazing! Bobbi and Kim in the west outpatient area were so wonderful and caring. I had a minor setback in my recovery, but these two nurses made me feel completely at ease and helped me through the situation. I would love for them to be commended for their excellent patient care and compassion. Thanks Bobbi and Kim!”

The end of last week we received a prominent community member and her family as a patient in our Emergency Department. She had fallen. The family did not want to bring her to RMC; they wanted to take her to MMC. When the EMTs arrived at her home they insisted that given her condition, RMC was THE best and ideal option among all medical centers for her care. After she was admitted and treated the son had a complete transformation of attitude and assessment regarding our medical center. Before leaving, at discharge, he shared with the chaplain, “I must admit that for some reason I did not want to bring my mother to RMC. However, Doctor Scott Stamper, RNs Teresa (ER-2) and Andy (ER-15) along with Triage Nurse, Jessica and a Physician’s Assistant … provided the best level and quality of attention and medical care we have ever received from any hospital we have ever entered before. Thanks so much!” Hats off to these great medical care practitioners for exceedingly wonderful services in a tough circumstance.

National Nurses Week “White” Kick-Off Join the Nursing Leadership Team as they kick-off National Nurses Week in style!

On May 6, bring out your “whites” (nursing caps optional) in honor and celebration of the public’s most trustworthy profession. Bringing out the whites is one of many fun activities planned to recognize the commitment of Research Medical Center nurses to the care and improvement of human life.

DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses Research Medical Center is now a proud participant in the DAISY Award Program, a, initiative to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary skills and compassionate care given by nurses at Research Medical Center, Research Medical Center Brookside Campus and Research Psychiatric Center. Each month a nurse will be honored with the DAISY Award for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.”

Every DAISY Award Honoree will be recognized during a public ceremony in her/his unit and will receive a beautiful certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch.

Additionally, the unit will celebrate with Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls. Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and employees may nominate a deserving nurse from by submitting a nomination form to the nurses station or dropping the form in a DAISY collection box located throughout the facility. About The DAISY Foundation The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system. During Pat’s 8 week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day. Discharge Lounge is Now Open The Discharge Lounge is a comfortable, relaxing area designed for patients discharged by their physician, but expect a delay in their transportation home. The lounge will open from 1000-1830 Monday-Friday, excluding hospital recognized holidays and staffed with a RN and Patient Care Technician. The patients receive their meal tray, routine medications and glucose monitoring if necessary. The lounge is located on the north end of the Outpatient West lobby and includes convenient parking and pick up options for our patients and families.

All lounge patients must be picked up by 1730.

Appropriate Discharge Lounge patients include: • Patients discharged by their physicians • Alert, appropriate and not displaying disruptive behavior • Not on isolation precautions • Self-care, ambulatory or independent transfer, and able to comfortably sit in a recliner • Patients who utilize oxygen up to 4 liters per nasal cannula The Discharge Lounge staff are able to focus their full attention on the patient’s discharge needs including discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and preventative health education, allowing a smoother transition home.

I C.A.R.E Spotlight Research Psychiatric Center Adolescent Partial Hospital Program (PHP) The Adolescent Partial Hospital Program (PHP) offers intensive day treatment for adolescents (ages 12-18) and their families who require treatment for mental illness and/or substance abuse. The program affords the adolescent all of the intensive treatment available on our acute inpatient unit, in a less restrictive environment, which enables the patient to function successfully outside of the hospital. As a step down from the acute inpatient unit, the PHP can ensure a successful transition back to home and school. The Partial Hospital program can also be helpful in avoiding a crisis situation, by improving functioning for a person whose mental illness and/or substance abuse are causing severe distress or impairment in daily living, but do not Top row, left to right: Donna Bales, Cynthia pose an immediate risk of harm.

Our team does Compassion best. We have patients and parents and Angie Winkler. coming to us in a time of crisis and our job is to make them feel safe and comfortable in a time of need. We do a nice job of listening, creating a safe environment where they feel safe sharing information, we truly make the needs of our patients the focus of our actions. We ask them to let us know if there is ever anything we can do to help them feel more safe and comfortable.

“I love helping others see the good in themselves. Watching the changes in each adolescent from when they enter the program to when they leave is indescribable. I love to help the adolescents share with their parents or guardians what they have struggled sharing. The family meetings are usually very positive and I like helping the adolescent be supported.” Program Therapist, Kali Keilbey, PLPC “Recently, a patient told program therapist Kali Keilbey he wanted to thank her and his nurse Doug Hall for saving his life . . . I told him his life was worth saving. That interaction gave Kali motivation and helped her realize she is in the right place. ” There are several ways our Partial program ensures satisfaction on a daily basis. First off, we have a great team that works together to meet the needs of our patients and their families through therapy, nursing, and medication management. Everyone in our department has a warm smile and will always go the extra mile for patients’ needs.

Just recently, we started a new admissions process, based on patient feedback, to reduce wait time in the front lobby.

Our patients now receive immediate support from our staff, while they wait for the precertification process to be completed, a process that sometimes takes several hours. Program Nurse, Doug Hall, RN

I C.A.R.E Spotlight Research Psychiatric Center Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) is offered to both inpatients and outpatients (18 + years-old), who are suicidal, in a manic high, suffer from prolonged depression, who cannot tolerate the side effects of medication and other disorders. ECT effectively helps 90 to 95 percent of recipients suffering from depression who have not been able to get relief with other treatments. Treatments are performed in RPC’s ECT suite which includes state-of-the art treatment equipment, the very best monitoring systems and comforting recovery areas.

Patients arrive nervous and sometimes scared of the unknown. We take the time before the treatment to comfort them and make them feel safe. Charge Nurse Tim Ward said “we even sometimes hold their hands during the treatment, if they ask us to.”

Research Psychiatric Center began ECT treatments in 1985 and is now the leading ECT provider in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, providing more than 1500 ECT treatments a year, averaging 28 treatments per day. Mental Health Month 2015 Recognizing mental health conditions early is known as Early Identification and Intervention. However, many times people may not realize their symptoms are being caused by a mental health condition or they feel ashamed to pursue help because of the stigma associated with mental illness. It’s up to all of us to know the signs and take action so mental illnesses can be caught early and treated, and everyone can live up to our full potential. Even though mental illnesses may require intensive, long-term treatment and a lot of hard work at the later stages, people can and do recover and reclaim their lives.

Signs and symptoms that require immediate attention: •Thoughts or plans of killing or hurting one self or another person •Hearing voices or seeing things that no one else can hear or see •Unexplainable changes in thinking, speech, or writing •Being overly suspicious or fearful •Serious drop in school or work performance •Sudden personality changes that are bizarre or out of character

Donate Life Month Donors, recipients and family members of donors, gathered together to share their stories and remember those who donated their organs to save the lives of others. Ashleigh Moulder, transplant recipient and Barb Starr, mother of donor, shared their transplant story.

Ashleigh Moulder, kidney and pancreas recipient was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when she was 10 yearsold and 19 years later was diagnosed with kidney failure due to the damage of her diabetes. On April 17, 2011, she received a new kidney and pancreas at RMC. “ I will never be able to put into words how grateful, blessed, and thankful I am to have received the greatest gift of all, the gift of life” Ashleigh said.

Barb Starr’s son David Starr was 19 years-old when he died in a car accident on January 26, 1991. Shortly after David passed away his family was informed David was not a registered organ donor. Barb and her sons made the tough yet rewarding decision to gift David’s organs to someone in need. David’s younger brother Kit was touched by the gift of life David was able to give to people through his organs, Kit donated a kidney to a person he met at the Transplant Games of America.

Take Your Child To Work Day It was no (school) work, just all play for the kids who participated in RMC’s Take Your Child to Work Day! The kids enjoyed fun, interactive learning activates which included CPR, X-Rays, rehab & burn education and exploring a KCFD fire truck and Life Flight Eagle helicopter!

Media Spotlight Baby Aiden’s First Birthday Smiles, laughter and warm hugs filled the room the as the Research Medical Center team who cared for Baby Aiden in utero for almost four months, celebrated his first birthday. Baby Aiden, along with his two young brothers, is a story of hope and compassion fueled by teamwork following a tragic car accident with their mother in December 2013. Mayor Sly James is a big supporter of Research and the outstanding educational resources our child care center offers.

Youth Summer Jobs offered at RMC VP of HR Charlotte O’Neal and our CEO Jackie DeSouza- Van Blaricum, had the pleasure of being part of Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s press conference when he announced RMC’s selection to participate in the Full Employment Council’s Summer Jobs League. It is an honor to be selected as one of only three employers in Kansas City to get the opportunity to offer work experience to youth from our area who otherwise may not gain this experience. This is a grant-funded program that you’ll be hearing more about as summer gets here!

Volunteer Awards Luncheon

Research Medical Center has a multitude of special volunteers who help with many tasks at each of our campuses. Pastoral care hosted the annual “Volunteer Recognition Luncheon” recently to honor all these great ambassadors!

School of Radiologic Techology MoSRT Conference Winners School of Radiologic Technology participated in the Missouri Society of Radiologic Technologists (MoSRT) Annual Conference April 8-11, held in Columbia, Missouri. Four senior students participated as a team in the “Ray Bowl” competition and took first place- for the first time in 15 years! This year’s “Ray Bowl” team made up of Vince Delinger, Jeremy Kroening, Tiara Saper and Liz Vajgrt We are very proud of the senior radiologic technology students!

Congratulations Class of 2015 On May 21, 10 students will be graduating from the School of Radiologic Technology here at Research Medical Center. Each student has worked really hard and are to be commended for their accomplishments. Upon completion of the program, students are required to take the national registry to become an “R.T.(R) – a registered radiologic technologist.

Twelve new students will start the School of Radiologic Technology program on July 6.

Teaching Teens to be RoadWise RoadWise teaches teenagers the real dangers of not wearing a seat belt, drinking and driving, and making irresponsible choices while in a motorized vehicle. During the program, participants follow the path they would take after being seriously injured in a car crash. They visit and hear from medical professionals in the Emergency Room, Radiology, Intensive Care and Physical Therapy. Lunch is spent with young people who have sustained a brain or spinal cord injury as a result of a motor-vehicle crash. They are able to offer a very realistic look at what can happen in an instant. The Missouri Highway Patrol also visits to share their experiences working crash sites on Missouri roads. Two RoadWise classes will be held this summer, at Research Medical Center on June 12 and Centerpoint Medical Center on July 10. Register today!

26th Annual Research Medical Center Golf Classic The 26th Annual Research Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, August 17 at Milburn Country Club.

ECHO Team Drive Scheduled for June 1-5 All aboard for the ECHO team! The ECHO Team will be hosting its 22nd Annual Membership drive June 1-5 at Research Medical Center’s Meyer Campus, the Brookside Campus and Research Psychiatric Center.

ECHO (Employees Contributing to Help Others) contributors support the Employee Assistance Fund and other health education and scholarship programs of The Research Foundation. The Employee Assistance Fund, established in 1994, helps Research employees in emergency financial need due to an injury, an illness or a natural disaster. Every year, dozens of employees receive emergency assistance from the Employee Assistance Fund.

ECHO Team members will host registration tables June 1-5 at Research Medical Center’s Meyer Campus, Brookside Campus, and Research Psychiatric Center. ECHO members who contribute $52.50 or more will receive a 2015 commemorative ECHO Team T-shirt. T-shirt day will be Wednesday, June 3rd.
