One of our new nursing leaders Hannah Franks reached out to her mother in Austin who voluntarily drove to Houston to make sure the family member of a Research patient was safe this week. Wow, Hannah! You and your mother are amazing. It was great for our patient to know the family member is safe.

Research welcomes new OB/GYN Erin McNulty. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas School of medicine and has been practicing in southern Kansas. Her offices are at Research and in Belton. If you know friends or family members who need an OB, you can have them call (816) 444-6888 to get scheduled with one of our midwives or OB/GYNs. Many of you know that our leading GYN/ONC physician Dr. Verda Hicks announced her retirement effective in mid-September. She has cared for so many patients from all over the nation. She’s a champion in her field and we will miss her. Dr. Hicks’ retirement also means we welcome new GYN/ ONC providers. Dr. Blair Smith is new to our GYN/ONC services and Nurse Practitioner Syble Cretzmeyer is coming back full time this month. Please share your warm farewell with Dr. Hicks as we welcome Dr. Smith.

Our nursing leaders hosted wonderful nursing forums at RMC and RPC this week. Diane, Jacque and Kia said they are thrilled with the active participation and the nice turn out. Lots of good ideas came up, and now we are going to work on putting these into action. Thank you for taking the time to enjoy a coffee and share with our nursing teams.

There’s several fun events coming up this fall: Wear Red Chiefs Home Opener Friday, Kidney Walk, Volker Employee Service Awards Dinner, Highlight the Night, Leukemia and Lymphoma Light the Night Walk and weekend / evening Coffee Cart. Halloween and holiday employee celebration plans are underway too.

Our nursing teams are orienting more than 60 nurses this fall. We are also making offers to December graduates. It’s exciting to welcome nurses to the big leagues. We want Research to become their work home.

Welcome New Providers Erin McNulty, MD joins Midwest Women’s Healthcare Specialists as an OB/GYN.

Dr. McNulty offers a full-spectrum of obstetric and gynecology services for women of all ages.

Over the course of her training and career, Dr. McNulty has received tremendous recognition for excellence in clinical skills and compassionate care. Her awards include the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists Special Resident in Minimally Invasive Gynecology and the American Urogynecologic Society Award for Excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Blair Smith, MD is a gynecologic oncologist with Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at

Research Medical Center. Her clinical expertise includes minimally invasive surgery, complex pelvic surgery, chemotherapy for the treatment of gynecologic cancers, and gynecologic cancer survivorship. She offers more than five years of experience and has been recognized with multiple awards for her compassionate care, community service and clinical skills. Dr. Smith has served on multiple professional committees for areas such as healthcare team communications, operations, quality improvement and patient safety, and disease specific groups, among others.

Ben Mizrahi, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained colorectal surgeon with Colorectal

Surgery Associates. In addition to his colorectal surgery fellowship, Dr. Mizrahi also completed a fellowship in minimally invasive colorectal surgery and advanced rectal cancer management. He has authored multiple abstracts and made frequent presentations in his field, specifically in the area of laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Mizrahi is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons and the American Board of Colorectal Surgeons. Heidi Kemmer, DO has joined Research Medical Center’s trauma team as a fellowship-

trained trauma and critical care surgeon. Dr. Kemmer earned her doctor of osteopathic medicine from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a general surgery residency at Beaumont Trenton Medical Center and a fellowship in surgical critical care at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor.

Bradley Woods, MD is a board-certified general surgeon joining Research Medical Center’s

trauma team. Dr. Woods brings with him more than 17 years of general and trauma surgery experience. He comes to us from Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center where he served as the trauma services assistant medical director. Dr. Woods earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch and completed his general surgery residency at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Research Leaders Promoted Steve Burr has been promoted to vice president of development and operations. Steve has been a leader at Research since 2009. For the past three years he has been serving as the Market Administrator for Physician Services Group (PSG). In his new role, Steve will be responsible for growing Research’s key hospital service lines, serving as the senior leader liaison for outreach hospitals; and supporting the growth and development of our PSG employed practices as well as our local and outreach physician practices. He is greatly respected for his ability to empower people to perform at their best.

Shannon Griggs has been named CEO of Research Psychiatric Center. Shannon assumed her

responsibilities of the 100-bed acute inpatient, day treatment and community-based outpatient behavioral healthcare facility after serving as interim CEO since April. Shannon joined Research in May 2014 as director of business development. During her time at Research, she has served as vice president of surgical sales and most recently the vice president of operations. Shannon joined HCA Midwest Health five years ago as director of physician relations at Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

Tammy Lightner, RN has accepted the position of vice president of quality. Tammy joined

Research Medical Center three years ago. Before joining Research, Tammy served as the quality and risk coordinator at Lee’s Summit Medical Center and the director of risk at Two Rivers. Tammy brings experience and a proven track record of success in performance improvement and project management, which will be invaluable in this new role. Tammy graduated from Webster University with her masters in health administration. She then returned to school and most recently graduated with a masters in project management.

Welcome Research College of Nursing President Thad Wilson, PhD Thad Wilson, PhD has been appointed as President of Research College of Nursing.

Dr. Wilson also acts as an academic liaison with the Division Chief Nurse Executive for HCA Midwest Health Division. He has a long and distinguished career of nursing leadership and history of service to the nursing profession that spans more than 40 years, with work in the clinical, academic and nonprofit healthcare arenas. Dr. Wilson was most recently the interim executive associate dean at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. He earned his bachelor of science in nursing from Graceland University, a master of science in nursing from the University of Utah, and a PhD in nursing from the University of Kansas.

Research Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2017. Research is one of only 193 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. This award reflects the commitment and dedication by Research’s medical team that provide care for heart attack patients and their families.

For the fifth consecutive year, Research’s heart program has earned the Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

Sarah Cannon at Research Earns Prestigious Accreditation The Breast Center at Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Research has been granted three-year/full accreditation designations by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to: comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services; a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options.

Three other HCA Midwest Health hospitals, including Centerpoint Medical Center, Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Medical Center, have also received this accreditations.

28th Annual Research Medical Center Golf Classic Golfers at the 28th Annual Research Medical Center Golf Classic raised $80,000 in net proceeds for ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City, an injury prevention program of The Research Foundation celebrating 30 years of keeping Kansas City youth safe.

The funds raised at the Golf Classic will help the Research Foundation support ThinkFirst speakers and secure more programs in area schools. During the 2016-2017 school year, ThinkFirst reached more than 37,000 students through 150 assemblies.

Since 1987, ThinkFirst has brought health educators and survivors of brain and spinal cord injuries to Kansas City area schools to present free, school-based assemblies. The presentations focus on making healthy and safe decisions regarding distracted driving, seatbelt usage, sports and recreation safety and water safety.

“This year’s golf classic was a great way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of ThinkFirst. The proceeds will help build upon our 30-year legacy of educating Kansas City youth about safety,” Rose Simone, the Foundation’s director of development, said.

KC Business Journal Honors Research’s CEO Research Medical Center CEO Jackie DeSouza-Van Blaricum has been named a 2017 Kansas City Business Journal Woman Who Means Business. Oncologist Stephanie Graff, MD was invited to speak at the event, sharing a inspiring message for women.

Fertility Specialist Ryan Riggs, MD Discusses Recent Fertility Breakthroughs Dr. Ryan Riggs discussed a study published in the Journal of Human Reproduction with the Kansas City Star.

The study found western men’s sperm counts have declined 59 percent over a 38-year period.

Dr. Riggs shares two factors that may be driving down sperm counts, one of those factors is consistent exposure to chemicals.

He also sat down with the KCTV5 and shared his expertise on how 3D-printed ovaries may be the answer for those struggling with infertility.

Research Psychiatric Center Opens Inpatient Behavioral Health Trauma Unit Research Psychiatric Center recently opened a new inpatient service called the Journey Program. This program offers inpatient behavioral health services for individuals suffering from trauma-related symptoms and diagnoses. It’s an intensive inpatient program being led by psychiatrist Shahbaz Khan, MD and clinical director Kathryn Brewer, PhD, LPC, CCTP. Research’s EP Team First to Implant Leadless Pacemaker Research Medical Center’s electrophysiology team recently implanted a leadless pacemaker, the first in the HCA Midwest Division. Unlike conventional pacemakers, leadless devices are placed directly in the heart without the need for a surgical pocket and insulated wires (called leads) and the new device is much smaller than a conventional pacemaker.

Research has three new Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in the Surgery Entrance parking lot. Linda, a leading nurse in our ER suggested we install these for patients and visitors.

I don’t remember all of their names, but the young lady in recovery was so patient and so polite and made sure that I was comfortable after surgery. Then when I got up to my room Alex was amazing I don’t remember the young lady before her but I appreciate everything she did as well, then Alex took over. I would recommend this facility and my doctor to anyone! Thank you to all the doctors and staff at Research Medical Center and the Sarah Canner Cancer Institute!”

Three Family Members Committed to Caring at Research Denise Zeikle and her daughters Madison and Haley have a long history at Research. Not only do they all three work at Research, they each also earned their nursing degree at Research College of Nursing. After graduating from college in 1985, mom Denise began working in med/ surg at Research. Haley was born not long after, then came Madison, and both attended daycare and preschool the Research Child Development Center. “Looking back, I think raising my children with other nurses who had the common link to Research and the child care center helped me build stronger work friendships,” Denise says.

Denise’s mother was also a nurse and their family is proud that Haley and Madison grew to love the profession.

Haley has worked at Research for three years in float pool, on 4 North and now PACU. Madison works on 4 East and is proud to be part of the STARN program. Haley says, “it’s the teamwork that I love.” And Madison says Research has great mentors.

Denise is proud to say she drives by five hospitals to get to work.

“There’s something about Research that holds us here – it’s a family feeling all the way around,” Denise, Madison and Haley agree.

12th Research Royal Roast “Meet Me Under the Clock” The 12th Research Royal Roast “Meet Me Under the Clock” is Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Union Station from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Held every two years, the Roast is a casual event where physicians, nurses, businesses and friends from the community join together for an evening of fellowship and fun, while raising charitable support for The Research Foundation. The evening includes a cocktail social, Kansas City jazz and a silent auction. New this year is a wine pull and a reverse raffle with a $2,500 cash prize.

Attendees also have the opportunity to meet many of the nursing scholarship recipients at the event.

“Under the direction of event chairs Drs. William and Diane Peterson, the Roast committee has planned a fabulous fun evening,” Cynthia Randazzo, The Research Foundation president, said.

Proceeds from the Roast will support scholarships for students attending the Research College of Nursing/Rockhurst University Joint Nursing Program.

“Obtaining a nursing degree is extremely challenging for students working a significant number of hours to fund their education. This fundraiser allows our Foundation to provide additional scholarships to help students complete the nursing program and increase the number of qualified nurses needed to fill vacancies in our community,” Randazzo said.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Saturday, October 28 at Crown Center Once again the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at HCA Midwest Health, as part of our Take 5 to Care partnership, is supporting the American Cancer Society and the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer raises awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer through research, and also provides education and support to those fighting cancer today.

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight - Apples The September Superfood of the Month is apples. The fall season is approaching, which for many people means visits to local orchards to pick tasty, in-season apples. Apples are a very well-known fruit – there are 7,500 varieties grown across the world. In the U.S. apples earn the rank of most popularly consumed fresh fruit (just ahead of bananas) according to the USDA. Apples are a good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol and control blood sugar, while insoluble fiber prevents constipation and reduces risk of colon cancer. Put down the produce peeler though! The peel is where two-thirds of the fiber is located. Also, the peel contains antioxidants that help fight cell damage. Visit the cafeteria at Research Medical Center this month for more information, recipes, and products featuring apples.
