Integrity Compassion Always Respect Excellence
Dear Research Family, It’s hard to believe it’s already October, and the holidays will be here soon! This year has been filled with challenges and successes, and I continue to be humbled by this amazing team. I’d like to reflect on actions we’ve taken since our Roaming Town Halls in September. In the past month, more than 100 employees have started at Research, with 39 being RN’s. We have another 31 employees starting soon. We continue to hold daily calls to prioritize filling vacancies with the right candidates. Several colleagues have asked about pay raises and other benefits. HCA Healthcare will be making compensation adjustments in November which include: implementing 2020 merit increases for active colleagues who did not receive them earlier this year, and paying a one-time bonus to all eligible facility-based colleagues. I am very proud that HCA and Research have been able to avoid closing services and laying off employees, while we continue to provide employees multiple support programs during this ongoing pandemic. HCA is also investing capital dollars at Research facilities. For 2020 – Q1 2021, Research has been allocated $14 million for capital improvements. Our leadership team met recently to prioritize our list of capital needs so we are able to fund at least one item for every department. Please discuss what your department needs with your leader so these needs can be brought before the leadership team at the next quarterly capital review. We also have large projects that HCA is funding over the next six months including a new cardiac electrophysiology (EP) lab, upgrades in our imaging department, and the muchanticipated Research campus cafeteria renovation. The next Employee Engagement Survey starts Monday, October 26. Human Resources will send a link to the survey, and will send reminders - so please take the survey before November 9. 2020 Ethics Champion The Center for Practical Bioethics has been elevating healthcare ethics discussions by raising and responding to ethical issues in the Kansas City area since 1984. This year, the Center for Practical Bioethics named Research Family
Research continues to be sought out for our clinical and spokesperson expertise as a Hero Hospital fighting COVID-19. Dr. Joel McKinsey conducted two TV interviews and a live radio interview within 40 minutes recently, reminding listeners about the importance of continuing COVID-19 prevention precautions.
Medicine Residency program director Jennifer Tieman, MD, a 2020 Ethics Champion. Dr. Tieman also serves as co-chair of Research Medical Center’s ethics committee. She was chosen for being an outstanding professional in teaching and well as for influencing policy guidelines and advising decision makers in ethically complex issues.

Honoring Frontline Heros
Local artist Gary Wilks created this painting to honor Kansas City Frontline Heroes, then donated a print to our Research “Hospital Heroes”. This hangs in the RMC EMS breakroom to also honor the region’s first responders who trust us with the care of their patients. Beyond the Mask The "Beyond the Mask" initiative helps relieve patient anxiety and promote colleague unity by enabling staff to attach a smiling or personal photo in conjunction with identification badges to help identify the person beyond the mask. Employees can also attach a personal statement of “I Enjoy …. to their photo to further engage with our patients and promote the personal connection. To accomplish this, all employees, starting with our bedside caregivers, will have a photo taken of themselves smiling (or utilize their badge photo if preferred). Be looking for additional details soon for picture days.

31st ANNUAL RESEARCH GOLF CLASSIC

RESEARCH GOLF CLASSIC RAISES NEARLY $77,000 FOR THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION The 31st Annual Research Golf Classic raised nearly $77,000 in net proceeds for The Research Foundation’s health education and scholarship programs. The annual Golf Classic was hosted at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kansas Monday, August 17. Major sponsors included Research Medical Center, LabCorp, AT Abatement, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, Flooring Systems, Inc., Heartland Electric Corporation Hospice Care of VNA, Integrated Opening Systems and JE Dunn Construction. Golfers enjoyed a number of activities throughout the day including a barbecue lunch sponsored by Ascentist Ear, Nose & Throat, Italian sausage compliments of Scimeca’s, root beer floats compliments of Belfonte, beverages compliments of County Beverage and Pepsico and snacks compliments of Canteen Vending and Sysco. The round of play was followed by a cocktail hour sponsored by Clarkson Construction Company and a slider bar sponsored by ECHO Power Engineering. “Several aspects of the Research Golf Classic were different this year, but the community support of our event remained unchanged. ” Rose Simone, The Research Foundation tournament director, said. “The Research Foundation is lucky to have contributors and friends that continuously celebrate our work.” The Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organization in Kansas City, Missouri dedicated to empowering people to lead healthier lives through health education and scholarship programs including injury prevention, nursing and allied health scholarships, continuing education opportunities in health care and assistance to low-income cancer patients.
