Last month, we launched our new spectral CT scanner, the first of its kind in the Kansas City region. What makes this better for our patients? “Now we are able to detect more information about a patient from a CT scan with the lowest radiation dose,” Research radiologist Dr. Farber says. “This technology helps us see abnormal anatomy and determine functional abnormality at the same time.”

After seeing Research neurosurgeon Dr. Basta, our first patient, Nicole, was referred for the spectral CT scan.

Congratulations to all our radiology department experts who are now caring for patients using the latest CT technology!

Research Psychiatric Center hosted a ribbon cutting event recently for our new Journey Program.

This program is receiving patient referrals from all across Missouri and Kansas, and is treating people impacted by post-traumatic stress disorder and behavioral health trauma-related symptoms.

What an amazing 2017 Volker Employee Appreciation Awards Banquet. More than 200 Research employees were honored for their dedicated service! Marie Barrentine, Charlotte Haupt and Janet Topliker have worked here for 45 years! Our Frist Award winners: Volunteer Patricia Misher, Physician Stephanie Graff, and Employee Sherry Bahr were also honored. Nurses Erin Soligo and Claire Boldry earned Excellence in Nursing Awards, and Elizabeth Graham was honored as our 2016 Employee of the Year. Congratulation to each of you!

Our neurosurgeon Dr. Rosenberg is at the leading-edge of his profession again. He performed the first radiosurgical central lateral thalamotomy for patients using our new Gamma Knife. This new approach to thalamotomy is for neuropathic pain, which Dr. Rosenberg says is pain that is caused by an injury or dysfunction of the nervous system. He and Dr. Sheldon performed cranial stereotactic radiosurgery to treat the source of pain in the patient’s brain. These patients are willing to tell their stories so look for more in the coming months!

Welcome New Providers Hamza Alshami, MD joins Kansas City Pulmonology Practice at Research Medical Center

as a board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonology/critical care specialist. Dr. Alshami has received several professional recognitions as well as authoring several professional papers, abstracts and articles. Dr. Alshami is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the American Academy of Chest Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Daniel Balmaceda, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pulmonologist with Kansas

City Pulmonology Practice at Research Medical Center. Dr. Balmaceda is a Healthgrades Honor Roll physician with more than 20 years of experience and expertise in pulmonary care and sleep disorders. Known for his compassionate care, he was the recipient of HCA’s prestigious Frist Humanitarian Award. Dr. Balmaceda is a Diplomate in Pulmonary Medicine and in Critical Care Medicine. Richard Coats, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeon with Kansas City Vascular and General Surgery at Research Medical Center. He has been a practicing vascular surgeon for more than 13 years and specializes in both endovascular and open surgical techniques to repair arteries and veins. Dr. Coats has been involved with training surgeons from around the country in advanced endovascular techniques. He has served as a clinical instructor for medical students at several institutions, and published multiple papers, articles and research results in his field. Phaedral Dowell, DO joins Research Neurology Associates as a board-certified neurologist

with fellowship training and expertise in movement disorders. Dr. Dowell has more than more than five years of neurology experience. She has clinical interests in Parkinson’s Disease, and has written several research papers on the disease and its effects on patients and caregivers. Prior to joining Johnson County Neurology, Dr. Dowell served as a VA physician. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the Movement Disorder Society.

Kenneth VanOwen, MD joins Research Neurology Associates as a board-certified, fellowshiptrained neurologist. Dr. VanOwen is also board-certified in sleep medicine and clinical neurophysiology. He completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology with special training in EMG, EEG, Evoked Potentials and Botox injections. Dr. VanOwen has more than 10 years of patient care experience, complemented by a strong academic and research background. Dr. VanOwen is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Society of Neuroimaging.

YOU’RE INVITED! 12th Annual Research Royal Roast The 12th Research Royal Roast "Meet Me Under the Clock" is Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Union Station from 6:30 to 10:30 pm.

The Roast is a casual event where physicians, nurses, businesses and friends from the community join together for an evening of fellowship and fun, while raising charitable support for The Research Foundation. The evening includes a cocktail social, Kansas City jazz and a silent auction. New this year is a wine pull and a reverse raffle with a $2,500 cash prize.

Proceeds from the Roast will support scholarships for students attending the Research College of Nursing/ Rockhurst University Joint Nursing Program.

"Obtaining a nursing degree is extremely challenging for students working a significant number of hours to fund their education. This fundraiser allows our Foundation to provide additional scholarships to help students complete the nursing program and increase the number of qualified nurses needed to fill vacancies in our community," Cynthia Randazzo, The Research Foundation president, said.

The Research Foundation Awards Scholarships to Research College of Nursing Students The Research Foundation has awarded nearly $260,000 in scholarships to nursing students in the Kansas City area during 2017.

Undergraduate nursing students preparing for their junior and senior years who attend Research College of Nursing, Avila University and William Jewell College are eligible to apply for scholarships through The Research Foundation.

Scholarship recipients from Research College of Nursing were honored at a reception August 22.

Alumni donors, Foundation board members and Research College of Nursing administration and faculty attended to celebrate the academic achievements of those pursuing careers in nursing.

Dr. Thad Wilson, recently appointed Research College of Nursing president, addressed the students before the presentation of scholarships.

Mayor Sly James Recognizes 30-year Commitment to ThinkFirst Kansas City Mayor Sly James and the City Council presented The Research Foundation and its injury prevention program, ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City, with a resolution of appreciation for 30 years of service in educating community youth through traffic safety and injury prevention.

Third district councilman, Jermaine Reed, read the resolution to fellow council members and fifth district councilman-at-large, Lee Barnes, Jr., spoke about ThinkFirst and its importance to the Kansas City community.

“During the 2016-2017 school year, ThinkFirst reached more than 37,000 students in Greater Kansas City,” Cynthia Randazzo, The Research Foundation president and CEO, said. “It is an honor to be presented this resolution by a mayor and council who are mindful of the impact our programs have on their city’s youth.”

Grossman Burn Center Hosts Midwest Burn Conference The Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center hosted the 2017 Midwest Region Burn Conference.

This annual event is designed to gather burn professionals from across the United States to share ideas and information about topics from acute burn injury to reconstruction. This is Grossman Burn Center’s first year hosting, and it was the largest conference to-date, with nearly 200 attendees from 25 hospitals and 28 burn-centric companies.

The three day multi-disciplinary conference offered a variety of educational courses to providers, students and survivors. Courses offered included, rehab services workshops, ABLS provider courses and presentations from regional research programs. Dr. Peter Grossman and general surgeon Dr. Megan Garcia of Grossman Burn Center both presented at the conference.

2017 Adopt-A-Family Program The holiday season is fast approaching. Without your help, many of our Research co-workers and their families will experience a very meager holiday season this year. Your generosity and bountiful spirit made it possible for many RMC families to enjoy and celebrate holidays past. Last year, 39 RMC families benefited from the collective generosity of 25 RMC departments and physician partners.

The pastoral care team is now planning RMC’s Adopt-A-Family program for 2017. RMC employees who would like to be considered for adoption, the nomination forms are now available and may be picked up in the RMC Pastoral Care office on Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Forms need to be completed and returned to the Pastoral Care Department office by Tuesday, November 14. All family adoptions are managed confidentially.

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight - Pumpkin The October Superfood on the Month is pumpkin. Pumpkins are a champion of fall with a long tradition in North American, even before the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

The thick shell allows this produce to keep fresh during winter months, pumpkins are thus called a “winter squash” despite a fall harvest. Before modern food preservation methods, pumpkins were one of few fresh produce options during winter. Pumpkin is now available year-round in canned form and is a good source of potassium, vitamin A, and fiber. The list of pumpkin-flavored foods is vast, but the most popular way to eat pumpkin is still as pumpkin pie. Though the pies we know today have gone through changes over the years. The pumpkin pies made by the pilgrims were a mixture of apples, spices, milk, and sugar baked inside a hollowed pumpkin. Stop by the cafeteria at Research Medical Center this month for more information, recipes, and products featuring pumpkins.

Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal

Ingredients: 2 cups Old Fashioned oats 4.5 cups water 1 T cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp nutmeg, ¼ molasses or maple syrup, 1 cup canned pumpkin, 6 T chopped pecans.

Instructions: Place all ingredients (except pumpkin) into a pot and bring to a boil.

Simmer for 5 minutes and fold in pumpkin. Stir to heat through. Serve with toasted pecans on the side.
