Dear Research Family, What a great way to start the year! Kansas City Chiefs pride is everywhere! I hope you have some new memories of great times with friends and family during Super Bowl season.

With all the red for Chiefs Kingdom, now February can become Heart Month! We have so much to share about Research Medical Center’s growing cardiovascular services.

Last year we performed many firsts – like the Tandem heart procedure and the first Tricuspid clip procedure. We also continue to add cardiovascular specialists and technology. We recently received approval to add a second electrophysiology lab, and we have a new ECHO ultrasound machine. There are a lot of first responders and hospitals across the region relying on us for the specialized cardiac care we offer.

We’re pleased to announce that we have a new solid organ transplant surgeon committed to joining our medical staff in April. Dr. Todd Merchen has more than 15 years of experience and currently serves as Associate Professor of Surgery; Carlos and Marguerite Mason Distinguished Chair of Transplant Surgery and Immunology; Program Director for Kidney Transplant Program and Department of Surgery at Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. We will also continue to recruit another surgeon to support the program.

Leader in Cardiovascular Care Amy Krueger went into sudden cardiac arrest while driving which caused her to crash into the dividing wall on I49. The Grandview Fire Department quickly arrived on scene and began CPR in the vehicle. Due to the crash, the driver door was unable to be opened and the car had to be rolled manually to allow enough room to remove Amy onto the highway shoulder where CPR was continued.

First responders delivered Amy to the Emergency Department at RMC. She spent more than 20 days as an inpatient receiving care from our team of interventional cardiologists and many more specialist providers.

Here she is with her husband Raymond. She has since returned home and is now back to work.

Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management, a text book co-edited by neurosurgeon Dr. William Rosenberg was named to the CNN/Forbes 39 Best Pain Management Books of All Time.

Earnings Outperformance RMC Cafeteria Updates Updates: • The Frozen Yogurt Machine has been repaired after being temporarily down for mechanical arm replacement.

• Chick-Fil-A will continue to provide a limited menu during Thursday lunch service.

New: • More grab and go options such as, sandwiches, high protein snacks such as hard boiled eggs, cheese and meat sticks have been added.

Upcoming: • On Monday’s starting February 17, a new pop-up restaurant will be featured during lunch service. It will rotate between a Mediterranean, Indian, and other world cuisines by local Chef Marwan. This is part of our Morrison Foodworks initiative as we continue to partner with local restaurants to provide more options to our employees and cafeteria guests.

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Chili Peppers These days, Americans are eating more chili peppers than asparagus, cauliflower or green peas per capita. Gram for gram, chili peppers contain more calcium, vitamin A and C than these three vegetables as well. Chili peppers also have positive effects on our metabolism by increasing the oxidation of fat and decreasing a hardy appetite.

They can also stimulate a fight-or-flight response by increasing epinephrine and norepinephrine. Capsaicin is the compound that makes these red peppers taste spicy, not to be confused with piperine, the compound that makes black pepper hot. Capsaicin does not dissolve in water, so if you overdo it, drinking milk or eating yogurt is a recommended antidote. If you are not eating chili peppers whole, you may be eating them in spices such as crushed red pepper, paprika and chili powder. Spice it up this February and try some different forms of chilies on any of your favorite dishes!
