Newly Certified Nurse Congratulations to Amarachi Uzodimma who recently became nurse executive board certified!

SPOT Sparkler Award Teresa Collins earned the first SPOT Sparkler Award. At 3.4 minutes, Teresa has the best average time in our Sepsis Prevention and Optimization Therapy (SPOT) program.

SPOT is a detection tool that examines vital signs, lab values, and provider orders to signal possible sepsis in our patients.

Well-trained professionals like Teresa make sure a sepsis screening is completed quickly, so we treat positive patients immediately. Sepsis is a serious medical emergency.

Active Shooter Preparedness HOW TO RESPOND WHEN AN ACTIVE SHOOTER IS IN YOUR VICINITY 1. EVACUATE • Have an escape route and plan in mind • Leave your belongings behind • Keep your hands visible

2. HIDE OUT • Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors • Silence your cell phone and/or pager

WHEN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARRIVES • Remain calm and follow instructions • Put down any items in your hands (i.e., bags, jackets) • Raise hands and spread fingers • Keep hands visible at all times • Avoid quick movements toward officers such as holding on to them for safety • Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling • Do not stop to ask officers for help or direction when evacuating

3. TAKE ACTION • As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter

First Incisionless Procedure for GERD In August Danielle Galloway underwent a new incisionless procedure for GERD, called TIF, under the care of Dr. Brad Freilich. After recovery, Danielle says she can’t believe how well TIF worked no meds, no pain, no cough, no GERD, not even tums.

Born at RMC and Reunited Vicky Kulikov and Chris Roberts were born on the same day at Research Medical Center and their mothers were hospital roommates! We heard about their story and helped them reunite on their 53rd birthday on November 12, 2019.

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight: Tea The super food for December is tea! Whether you like black, green or chai, there are many great health benefits to drinking a cup of tea. The main health promoting substance in tea is called polyphenols.

Polyphenols have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The antioxidants in black tea help reduce the risk of a heart attack, whereas green tea helps to lower total cholesterol levels and increase HDL levels (“good” cholesterol). Although tea itself contains only a few calories, it is important to be aware of added sugars and creamers that are used to flavor your drink. It is best to stick with unsweetened tea and use a lemon wedge, non-fat milk or sugar substitutes for additional flavor. A cup of tea is the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter’s night!
