It’s already been a nice holiday season. In November we hosted the “Thankful Families Event.” Four patients and their Research teams were reunited to celebrate Thanksgiving and how we live our mission taking care of patients. You can see the photos on pg. 2.

Breakfast with Santa was a great time – seeing our employees with their families was rewarding! It reminds us that we work hard so we can provide for our families and have some fun too. Santa was very familiar looking! These pics are on Facebook and pg. 9.

2 Develop Our People

Welcome New Leaders Lee Champion, RN joins Research Medical Center as inpatient rehab nursing director.

In this position, Lee is responsible for driving evidence-based nursing practices for Research’s rehabilitation services to assure every patient achieves maximum potential. She comes to us from Swope Health Services where she was the director of nursing. Lee earned both her bachelors and masters of nursing degrees from University of Mary.

Erin Price, RN joins Research Medical Center as interim director of surgical services. She

brings more than 18 years of surgical experience to Research and has a strong track record of success in interim leadership positions supporting complex surgical programs. She has been working in interim roles with the most recent assignment being at Regional One Health: Elvis Presley Trauma Center, a level I trauma center in Memphis, TN. Erin began her career as an OR nurse in 1999 at North West Texas Hospital, a level II trauma center in Amarillo, TX. She earned her masters of science nursing degree from Walden University. She is currently going back to school to get her doctor of nursing practice degree.

Matt Pick joins Research Medical Center as administrative director of imaging services. In this

role, Matt will work with Research’s radiology leadership team, staff and physicians to ensure the efficient delivery of high-quality imaging services and exceptional patient experience. Matt comes to us from the University of Kansas Hospital where he was the manager of nuclear medicine services, responsible for the program at their main campus as well as several satellite sites. Prior to joining KU he was with Kansas City Cancer Center/ US Oncology overseeing diagnostic imaging services. Matt earned his bachelor’s in healthcare management and master’s in business administration from Ottawa University.

Research Leaders Promoted Michaela Logan, RN has been promoted to vice president of patient experience. This role

is dedicated to developing and onboarding Research’s new leaders. She will work with them to understand Research’s Standards of Behaviors while they take action to develop our people and deliver exceptional care. She has worked at Research since she graduated from Research College of Nursing in 2002. First working as a staff nurse on our inpatient oncology unit, then advancing to a nurse manager and unit director of 4 East. Michaela was then named administrative director of Sarah Cannon Cancer Services at Research last September.

Susan Wade, RN has been promoted to director of case management and utilization review.

Susan has enjoyed a successful tenure at Research Medical Center which began as a staff nurse in 1980. She has held various positions within the organization and most recently served as manager of case management and utilization review. Throughout her years of dedicated service, Susan has and continues to demonstrate her commitment to our ICARE values, always going above and beyond to ensure our patients and families receive excellent service throughout the continuum of care.

ER of Brookside Expands The ER of Brookside is almost finished with a year long renovation and expansion project. This project includes expansion from 11 exam rooms to 20 exam rooms. The ER of Brookside is the busiest freestanding ER within HCA Midwest, with patient satisfaction scores in the top quartile. ER of Brookside ER medical director, Dr. Strickland is pictured below.

Research Oncologist Co-Chairs Pancreatic Cancer Walk Oncologist Dr. Jaswinder Singh at Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Research is one of the co-chairpersons for 2018 PurpleStride, the walk to end pancreatic cancer. Research Only Hospital to Receive Donate Life Award Research Medical Center was presented the 2017 Donate Life Award by the Midwest Transplant Network. This award recognizes our partnership in saving lives through organ and tissue donation. Research is the only hospital in Kansas City and the first hospital in the HCA Midwest Division to receive this award. Research supports a 95% conversion rate which translates into 71 lives saved.

Research College of Nursing and Rockhurst Team Up Nurse practitioner students from the Research College of Nursing and Rockhurst’s physical therapy doctoral recently participated in an collaborative approach to learning the advanced assessment techniques of the musculoskeletal system. Students discovered through working together how and why each of their roles are important to the patient and to one another.

October DAISY Award Winner Jeannette Johnson, RN - Labor & Delivery “My spouse and I had lost our unborn child due to complications. We not only suffered from emotional trauma but due to complications from surgery, I suffered a lot of physical distress as well. Jeannette not only assisted us by doing her job phenomenally but also took additional steps that included speaking with myself and my spouse in detail about what took place in surgery, giving us a better understanding about why I feel the way I do. In addition, she took time to explain to both of us how important it is to be there for one another during our grieving process. She is truly an amazing nurse and I hope to see her again if ever there is a time.

I am truly thankful for her.”

Pat Conley, RN is Dedicated to Nursing Excellence Progressive care unit nurse Pat Conley has been named a March of Dimes Intermediate Care Nurse of the Year. March of Dimes Nurse of the Year awards recognize and honor distinguished nurses for their outstanding contributions to nursing programs. Pat also recently presented her COPD study at the International Nursing Research Congress. Pat’s dedication and commitment to nursing excellence at Research and her efforts throughout the community have helped so many.

“My husband recently had back surgery at Research. We would both like to acknowledge the level of care he received while there. He spent four nights on the 6th floor. I wish I could remember the names of all who assisted him, including food service and housekeeping staff, PT and OT. I want to mention the names I do remember, D’Tara, David and Danielle, thank you so very much! Your dedication to your job and to your patient as well as your compassion were greatly appreciated.”

4 West/ICU

“The look on all of the nurses and doctors faces in the ICU when I gave them their goodie bags I made them was the best feeling ever. Too often our doctors and nurses are taken for granted and not given the credit that they deserve. The stories that they remembered while getting their bags were so funny. They made sure to let me know they would never forget my grandma and one nurse said that they were so touched to be able to witness us all laying hands on my grandma praying with and for her. Nurses like this and the care she was given make me feel so incredibly blessed. Thank you Research Medical Center ICU and 4 West for being so good to my grandmother.”

Labor & Delivery

“I go to Midwest Women’s Healthcare Specialists for my OB/GYN care. Recently, I had to visit triage because I was in a lot of pain. The nurse took really great care of me as well as the doctors. I’m glad I have a great OB as well as nurses and doctors to take care of me during my pregnancy. Thanks again.”

“Dr. Cynthia Costa was prompt in her care when I was seen in the ER. She was kind and knowledgeable. She explained all tests to be done and all results when available. She answered all my questions and never seemed rushed. Her level of compassion was amazing as well. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone in need of a neurologist.”

Oncology “I have only positive things to say. The receptionists, nurses and doctors have been so kind and caring. Dr. Amandeep Kalra is one of the best doctors I’ve ever come across. I have always been listened to, respected, and very well taken care of when I visit.”

Other Comments “The receptionist was friendly and helpful. The doctor took care of medical needs effectively. All of the services were received in a timely fashion.”

Thankful Families Event Research Medical Center recently hosted a Thankful Families event, reuniting patients and their families with the physicians, nurses and other providers who cared for them during and after their stay. Thank you to everyone who joined in celebrating their life and recovery!

Bernice Paige was at Research with her daughter who was having a procedure when she exhibited stroke symptoms. An employee in the Cardiology Unit waiting room, Kelley Lewis, immediately noticed the signs of stroke and initiated Code Stroke. Paige, who was diagnosed with a TIA, is doing well.

Ryan Chambers was in his garage when his wife screamed for him to come upstairs. She was frying donuts and had turned away for a moment when the boiling oil erupted into flames. Ryan saw the fire was too large to contain with baking soda, so he picked up the pan rushed outside. Feeling the fire climb up his shirt he dropped and rolled on the lawn below. EMS transported Ryan to Grossman Burn Center at Research where he was treated for second-degree burns.

Jessica Roe sought out Research specifically so she could have a low intervention birth. The new mother recognizes her OB/GYN Dr. Rebecca Wayman, and the entire Research labor and delivery team for bringing a healthy baby boy, Trevor, into the world even though due to unexpected complications, she had to have a C-section birth.

Kelley Garrison had a kidney transplant in 2011.

Research’s transplant team is celebrating with her because Kelley gave birth this year to a marvelous baby boy, Elliott. She has a young son Donovan who was born before her transplant so Kelley says she truly is thankful for her “before and after transplant family.”

Honoring Veterans Day In honor of Veterans Day, Chaplain Darrell Anthony recognized Dave Glover in plant operations for his service.

Chaplain Darrell also honored patients by giving them blankets that were donated by the members of a local congregation at the Southwood Church of the Nazarene in Raytown.

Healthy Habits Superfood Spotlight - Winter Squash The Superfood of the Month is winter squash. Winter squash, despite its name, is grown and harvested in the warm weather months.

Unlike summer squash varieties winter squash is grown to the mature fruit stage, in which a thick rind is formed. This tough, inedible skin helps preserve the squash throughout the winter. Winter squash is naturally low in calories and like most orange-yellow fruits and vegetables is an excellent source of vitamin A. Winter squash also provides fiber, complex “healthy” carbohydrates, and potassium. Sugar pumpkin, spaghetti, and butternut squash are commonly available at grocery stores. Other types of winter squash include acorn, buttercup, and delicata squash – check out your local farmers market for these less popular, but still tasty winter squash varieties. The flavor of winter squash is mild-to-sweet and versatile enough to work in sweet or savory recipes.
