I’m thrilled to see how living our mission is making a difference in the lives of patients and families every day. Here’s a message we received recently: “Since being diagnosed with Stage IIIB pancreatic cancer June 2015, I have spent a LOT of time at Research. The doctors, nurses and staff have all been incredibly compassionate and supportive. Jaswinder Singh MD (oncologist), Joe Cates MD (surgeon), James Malezewski MD (internist), Thomas Sweeney MD (interventional radiology), the countless nurses including Cindy at the infusion clinic, the NPs at Sarah Cannon, Erin in outpatient surgery admitting all worked together to rip me from the jaws of death. So many dedicated professionals! They provided outstanding communication throughout the whole ordeal! Happy to say I’m now cancer free and moving on to survivorship thanks to them and the world class care they gave me <3.”

Welcome New Providers Jennifer Heim, MD joins Midwest Women’s Healthcare Specialists as an OB/GYN. Dr. Heim offers a full-spectrum of obstetric and gynecology services for women of all ages, from adolescents to women in their peri/post-menopausal years. With a passion for total women’s care, Dr. Heim is a strong advocate for women being partners in their healthcare decisions. She believes that each woman is unique and works individually with her patients. Core to her care philosophy is her belief that all women should have access to preventive healthcare and early prenatal care. Aubree Remsburg, CNM recently joined Midwest Women’s Healthcare Specialists as a certified nurse practitioner. Welcome New Leaders Kim Dannels, RN joins Research’s team as director of nursing operations.

Kim is responsible for overseeing house supervisors, staffing office, bed management and other areas that provide patient care hospital-wide. Kim brings to Research more than 11 years of nursing and hospital management experience. She comes to Research from Centerpoint Medical Center where she served as bed manager for five years and most recently the director of ortho/neuro and oncology units. Kim received her bachelor in science of nursing and masters of science of nursing from Western Governors University.

Kristie Baker, RN, MSN joins Research Psychiatric Center as vice president of operations.

Kristie’s primary role is managing the rural contracts at Cass Regional Medical Center and Western Missouri Medical center. Kristie comes to us from Universal Health Services where she was the chief nursing officer of Two Rivers Behavioral Health Hospital. She brings a tremendous amount of experience in multiple areas of quality, program development, market development and operations.

Kristie received her bachelors in science of nursing from Wichita State University and her masters in science of nursing and organizational leadership with a focus in healthcare from Grand Canyon Graduate Studies.

Monica was respectful and loving to not only me, but also my husband and my midwives-turned doula’s. My daughter was born the day before my birthday. On the evening of my daughter’s birth, Monica brought me birthday cake. She said it would be my birthday when her shift ended, so it was already my birthday in her eyes. Research Nurse Selected to Present at Magnet Program Symposium Pat Conley, PhD, RN from 4 West Progressive Care Unit, was selected by the Kansas City Magnet Program Coordinators Consortium to present at the Magnetizing KC Symposium. Pat presented about her research on discharge education and follow up for COPD patients to improve quality of life.

Discussing distracted driving with teens RoadWise is a FREE program for young drivers 14-19, emphasizing the importance of wearing a seat belt, making good decisions behind the wheel and not driving distracted.

Participants follow the path they would take at a trauma center after being seriously injured in a car crash by visiting the Emergency Room, Radiology, Intensive Care and Physical Therapy.

Lunch is spent with young people who have sustained a permanent brain or spinal cord injury as a result of a motor-vehicle crash. The Missouri State Highway Patrol also visits to talk about working crash sites and the daunting task of making death notifications to families.

Above All Else is a points-based reward and recognition program that is designed to recognize staff members

for their commitment to our Mission, Vision and Values. You can redeem points immediately or save for a larger award. Here are some of the ways in which you can be awarded points throughout the year.

SENIOR LEADER RECOGNITION

As Senior Leaders observe you displaying our ICARE values, they can recognize you with a card. The card has a point value of 3,500 points. Instructions for depositing points into your online account are printed on the cards.

LEADER RECOGNITION

As Managers and Directors observe you living the ICARE values, they can recognize you online with points and a personalized e-certificate. You can be recognized at different levels based on the impact and outcome of your actions. You will receive an email notifying you of your award and the points will automatically be deposited into your online account.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

You have the opportunity to nominate your peers and be nominated for Employee of the Month award. The purpose of this award is to identify individual examples of excellence. This award recognizes employees who consistently demonstrate our Mission, Vision, and Values. Nominations will be reviewed by the Employee Advisory Group. Two winners will be selected each month: one for Research Medical Center and one for Research Psychiatric Center. Employee of the Month awardees will receive 15,000 points and a $200 bonus added to an upcoming paycheck. Recipients will also be eligible for the annual Employee of the Year Award.

PEER TO PEER RECOGNITION

You have the ability to recognized and be recognized by your fellow coworkers through the Peer to Peer Recognition program. Each month 10 winners will be selected and 2,000 points will be deposited into the winner’s online account.

HCA Well Care Medical Plan Network Coverage Changes Effective April 30, North Kansas City and Meritas Health Corporation physician groups will no longer be considered in-network providers for HCA Well Care medical plans, which use the HIMCC/Aetna network.

All healthcare services received at this facility and these offices will be processed as out-of-network, which will result in higher costs to Well Care medical plan participants.

What should you do?

If you are an HCA Well Care medical plan participant, it is very important that you verify your physician is still participating in the HMCC/Aetna network by calling Aetna at (800) 222-9215. You can also access the provider directory by logging on to HCArewards.com, clicking on Benefits Providers and choosing the HMCC/PHO directory link. If you have questions about the network and participating physicians, call HMCC at (816) 823-0750.

Purple Stride Kansas City 2017 Saturday, May 6 at Theis Park The Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute HCA Midwest Health and Research are helping create awareness and raise funds in the fight against pancreatic cancer, the nation’s third leading cause of cancer death, by creating a walk team to participate in PurpleStride Kansas City 2017.

PurpleStride Kansas City is on Saturday, May 6 at Theis Park. Registration begins at 7:00 am, ceremonies at 8:00 am and the Run/Walk begins at 8:30 am. Enjoy a morning filled with children’s activities, music, refreshments and more!
