The American Heart Association just awarded four-yearold Khi Collins the “Brain Saver Award” for recognizing that her grandmother, Karen Collins, was having a stroke.

Khi notified Karen’s husband and they came directly to RMC where our stroke experts administered tPA within 20 minutes. Karen was back to work within weeks and in her words “thank you Research for the perfect care that erased a stroke that would have killed me.” (See their photo here with RMC stroke coordinator Jacki Addington.)

This 20-minute stroke reversal time puts RMC at second in the nation for administering fast and effective tPA. Everyone in our region needs to know this! We are the best place for stroke care and we certainly have the data to prove it.

Please join me in welcoming all our new physicians! Neurosurgeon Dr. Neil is off to a great start; cardiologist Dr. Blackburn will be working with us from Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton beginning next week; trauma surgeon Dr. Simpson is now at RMC; nocturnist (nighttime hospitalist) Dr. Ring is caring for inpatients; and pulmonologist Dr. Ireland (for Belton Regional and Lee’s Summit), GYN oncologist Dr. Lybarger and neuro oncologist Dr. Kalra are coming on board next month. RMC is growing and it’s truly an honor to be adding these physicians to our outstanding medical staff!

Welcome New Physicians Kristopher Lybarger, DO, MS(R) is a gynecologic oncologist with Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health at Research Medical Center. Dr. LyBarger serves women in and around Kansas City and is committed to providing exceptional care to those affected by female cancers. He has a broad academic and research background that has provided him with knowledge and training in the latest advances in gynecologic oncology, and he is passionate about continuing to learn through all means. He also has training in advanced robotics which allows quicker healing and tiny incisions for even the most difficult cancer cases. Dr. LyBarger was nominated to be the national resident research and awards representative for the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and was honored several times during his training for academics, teaching, research and service. In addition to his practice, Dr. LyBarger serves in numerous professional leadership positions. He spends much of his off time participating in medical mission work in underserved areas in various countries. His areas of interest in research and treatment include advanced ovarian cancer, early and advanced endometrial cancer, robotics for treating all female cancers, and sentinel lymph node mapping.

Jeffrey Simpson, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained trauma surgeon with Midwest Trauma and Surgical Specialists. He is affiliated with Research Medical Center and treats patients in the Kansas City area. Dr. Simpson brings a deep background in emergency and trauma care, having just completed his trauma fellowship with one of California’s busiest Level I trauma centers. While there, Dr. Simpson routinely served as primary surgeon performing major abdominal, thoracic and vascular surgery procedures. He also served as a clinical instructor to surgery residents and medical students. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association and a member candidate for the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Amandeep Kalra, MD, FACP is a neuro oncology specialist with Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest at Research Medical Center. Dr. Kalra practices with Research Neurology Associates, treating patients in the Kansas City area who suffer from brain and spine cancers. Prior to joining Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health, Dr. Kalra completed a neuro oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He offers a rich background of academics in addition to his patient care expertise. Dr. Kalra has served as an assistant professor of medicine for the University of Massachusetts, the Penn State University School of Medicine and was on the faculty of Holy Spirit Hospital. Dr. Kalra also served at leadership roles in graduate medical education. He has published numerous abstracts and papers. Dr. Kalra is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Academy of Neurology and Society for Neuro Oncology.

Timothy L. Blackburn, MD, FACC a board-certified cardiologist with Midwest Heart & Vascular Specialists, has served patients in the Kansas City area for more than 25 years. He is affiliated with Belton Regional Medical Center and Golden Valley Memorial Hospital and currently serves patients within the Belton and Clinton, Mo. communities. Dr. Blackburn is board certified in cardiovascular diseases, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography, and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. Over the course of his career, he has served in various leadership roles for hospitals, including director of non-invasive cardiology and co-director of nuclear medicine.

Earned Advanced Practice Pain Nurse Recognition Laura Textor, AP, PNM recently earned recognition as an Advanced Practice Pain Management Nurse. This required a rigorous and extensive process, involving not only clinical work but also practice development and research with the American Society for Pain Management Nursing.

Laura sees patients at The Center for the Relief of Pain and her role as a nurse specialist includes documenting formalized treatment plans and individualized care assessments. She has more than 30 years of nursing experience.

The Center for the Relief of Pain is a service of the Midwest Neuroscience Institute at Research Medical Center and is dedicated to managing complex pain and improving patients’ quality of life.

RMC Physician Leading the Way for Cancer Patients with Pain Research Medical Center founder of Center for the Relief of Pain and neurosurgeon William Rosenberg, MD, was in Washington, DC, recently lobbying the Senate HELP Committee for legislative change. The goal of this work is to help influence FDA regulatory processes, which with improvement would impact the timeliness of cancer patients getting the pain reducing medications and treatments they deserve.

• It is estimated that over 50% of cancer patients have a pain problem with the incidence rising to 90% for advanced cancer.

• With almost 1,700,000 new cancer cases being predicted in the US for 2015, there will be over 800,000 new cases of cancer-related pain this year.

• Cancer related pain can be very difficult to control,

requiring high doses of morphine-related drugs (opioids) with significant side effects even while still being relatively ineffective for some patients.

• RMC’s Dr. Rosenberg is on the forefront of offering solutions to patients with cancer-related pain.

Build Our Brand Black Health Care Coalition Annual Luncheon

CEO Jackie Desouza-Van Blarium had the honor of introducing incredible community leaders who have demonstrated significant leadership in the pursuit to eliminate health care disparities in the community at the Black Health Care Coalition Annual Luncheon. At the event, Research Medical Center was awarded Kansas City’s Health Care Leader honoring our contributions to the community.

26th Annual Research Golf Classic a Hole in One The Research Foundation hosted its 26th Annual Research Golf Classic on Monday, August 17 at Milburn Country Club chaired by Dr. Jason Eppler. The Classic raised $70,000 for The Research Foundation’s ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Program. ThinkFirst teaches more than 55,000 students in the Greater Kansas City area how to prevent traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Thank you to all of the golfers, sponsors and volunteers who participated in this year’s golf classic!

Trauma Team Promotes Prevention!

Research Medical Center trauma department experts participated in Senator KiKi Curls’ Annual Public Health and Safety Fair on August 15. The team spent the day at “the K” educating parents and children about prevention of traumatic injuries before they happen!

Pediatric Wellness Day at the KC Zoo Research Medical Center superheroes showed off their magical caring powers on August 1 during the Pediatric Wellness Day at the Kansas City Zoo. Kids of all ages suited up in masks and capes posing like their favorite superhero. This event raised awareness for all of the wonderful pediatric, labor and delivery and ER services Research Medical Center offers.

SAVE THE DATE! The next Pediatric Wellness Day at the Kansas City Zoo will be Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The TeleStroke Network provides physicians and patients in rural counties 24-hour access to our stroke experts and specialized services not otherwise available. Advanced videoconferencing systems allow our stroke specialists to be “in the room” with the patient and doctor in the regional hospital’s emergency room.

Our stroke specialists help evaluate the patient and consult on diagnosis, treatment or appropriate transfer.

Research Medical Center Summer ED Internship Program “Research seeks out the brightest and the best,” RMC Summer ED Internship Program Coordinator and ED Charge Nurse Terry (Duffey) Miller explained recently when sharing about the program she helped develop for Research six years ago.

To be accepted into the internship program, youth need to have demonstrated an interest in a medical career, participate fully in Volunteer Boot Camp, be willing to volunteer 125 hours to the RMC emergency department during the summer and be a great team player.

So far in six years, this program has proven to be a stepping stone for nearly 50 young students with aspirations of a medical career.

The majority have gone on to earn medical, nursing/advanced nursing, or health care administration degrees and several work at Research.

“My wife was a patient of Dr. Blatt’s due to a SAH and subsequent surgery for the aneurysm. She experienced many setbacks due to violent vasospasms and seizures, and was hospitalized for just over 2 months. About half of that time was spent in ICU, off and on. The first night, while she awaited surgery, her nurse was Grace. We haven’t had a lot of experience with this level of health care. I didn’t know what to expect. Grace was an absolute angel, and my wife still speaks highly of her. Stephanie, Grace, and too many other names to remember. You have a young, energetic, sharp, and highly trained staff there. It was impressive to watch these young people work. I say the same thing about the Techs. Great idea using Firefighter/Paramedics on the floor. Amazing. Two days after she was released, I was on the phone with Dr. Blatt, bringing her back to your ER with another Stroke. Dr. Blatt had a team on site when we arrived. Watching your Trauma Team was like watching a television show. A well oiled machine, with no one missing a beat. I timed the event. In under 30 minutes, she was on her way to ICU, with doctors beginning a procedure. That means that she was checked, admitted, had CT and MRI, then results viewed and a diagnosis in that short time. I want you all to know how grateful I am for the care that my wife received. She has made such great progress thanks to your people.”

Transplant July 29, 2015 Dear Dr. Murillo, I would like to thank surgeon Daniel Murrillo, MD at The Transplant Institute for giving me a second chance at life on October 6, 2011 when I received my new kidney. Your staff was there for me every step of the way from start to finish and even after I left the hospital. I now live in Texas and am living my life to the fullest.

Email Encryption and You! Working in healthcare, email is a powerful tool comes with great responsibility. Our patient’s data is in your trusted hands, so thank you for taking the time to ensure all sensitive communications are encrypted.

When should I encrypt email?

If you are sending an email and you have a question of how sensitive the communication, simply choose to [encrypt] it.

The following examples of sensitive data are a pretty safe bet to be considered sensitive communications.

• Social Security Numbers

• Individually Identifiable Health information (PHI)

• Account Numbers of any kind

• Health Insurance Claim (HIS) Numbers

How do I encrypt email?

Just enter [encrypt] (including the brackets) somewhere in the email subject line. < >, ( ), { }, or [ ] will all work.

Why should I encrypt email?

The simple answer is your data, your families’ data, your patients’ data all have a value to cyber criminals and they are actively trying to get their hands on all of it. We don’t want to be the reason one of our patient’s or loved ones has to deal with identity theft.

You are the best defense we have against cyber criminals!

3D Mammography Now you have a choice.

3D Mammography, the newest breast imaging technology available, is now offered at Research Medical Center and at the Research Brookside Campus.

Three-dimensional (3D) mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, is a type of digital mammography in which x-ray machines are used to take pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles and computer software is used to reconstruct an image. This process is similar to how a computed tomography (CT) scanner produces images of structures inside of the body. A good analogy for 3D mammography is to think of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all of the pages – but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers. 3D mammography is designed with the same concept in mind.

3D Mammography provides these diagnostic advantages: • Multiple studies have reported that the 3D mammography exam significantly increases breast cancer detection, including earlier detection, with a more than 40% increase in the detection of invasive cancers.

• Clearer lesion images • Reduction in the number of unnecessary biopsies, minimizing patient anxiety and unnecessary costs 3D Mammography is recommended for patients who have the following: • Previous mammograms with ambiguous or inconclusive results • Dense breast tissue • Been previously called back for repeat breast scans • Undergone biopsies for suspicious masses or lesions in the past • Breast cancer, or have a family history of cancer Traditional 2D Mammogram is also available and is an option for many women.

A note on potential out-of-pocket cost: As new technology becomes available, it is often normal to see delays as Medicare and private insurance companies establish reimbursement for these services. We will submit the paperwork to your insurance company for payment, but if denied, you will be responsible for any out-of-pocket costs, deductibles or copayments as determined by your insurance company for the 3D mammogram.

Clinical Excellence Update Annual Competency Fair: Last Chance!

Participation in the Annual Competency Fair is mandatory for all nursing, radiology, respiratory and transport staff hired before December 31, 2014. The last 2015 fair will be held October 7 in the Curry Education Center located at the Brookside Campus. Staff must check in before 2:00 pm, no one will be allowed to enter after that time. Prior to arriving, you must have your 2015 Code of Conduct completed.

or MET team call.

De-Escalation Tips

1. Be quiet, attentive & sincere. Listen, don’t interrupt. Reflect their feelings.

2. Repeat the content of the person’s message and emphasize that you want to help.

3. If no context, help the person clarify his or her request.

4. Build support by sharing times that you have felt wronged 5. Allow the person to release frustration.

Let them know that you understand the complaint.

Employee Flu Clinic Dates Receiving an annual flu vaccination is the first and best way you can protect yourself and others from influenza. To highest your protection against the flu, it is recommend to get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. It takes about two weeks after the vaccination for the antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the fly virus. Remember, you will not be at higher risk for catching the flu in March or April if you receive the vaccine as early as September.

“An Apple a Day… Apples alone won’t keep the doctor away, but they can be a step in the right direction. Apples are delicious, low in calories, a natural mouth freshener and full of fiber and other health promoting nutrients.

Recent studies have shown a relationship between increased apple consumption and having a healthier weight. This does not correspond to other apple products such as juice or sauce, however. Eating whole fruit is always a better option rather than fruit juice as you are getting more fiber which helps keep you full longer and ultimately decrease total calorie consumption. Stop by the Wellness tables in the café for September’s promotions as well as recipes and more information about the health benefits of apples.
