Research Medical Center and Research Brookside have been busy offering mammography to new patients and patients who have been coming here for years. Our new 3D technology is popular but we also still offer 2D technology for physicians and patients who determine the advanced imaging isn’t always necessary.

Many of you know we are looking at ways to make patient registration more convenient for our patients and their families. At Research, we not only want to help our patients get well, we want to offer them easy access and a wonderful overall experience in our facilities.

Welcome New Physicians Neuro Oncology Specialist Amandeep Kalra, MD, FACP with Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health at Research Medical Center. Dr. Kalra practices with Research Neurology Associates, treating patients from the Kansas City area who suffer from brain and spine cancers. Prior to joining Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health, Dr. Kalra completed a neuro oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Dr. Kalra has served as an assistant professor of medicine for the University of Massachusetts, the Penn State University School of Medicine and was on the faculty of Holy Spirit Hospital. Dr. Kalra also served in leadership roles in graduate medical education. He offers a rich background of academics in addition to his patient care expertise. Dr. Kalra is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Academy of Neurology and Society for Neuro Oncology.

Research Psychiatric Center (RPC) opened its doors in a newly constructed building for the first time in August of 1985. Until then, the Acute Inpatient Program was located solely at Research Medical Center (RMC). In the new building, RPC broadened its scope to include inpatient treatment of adults, children and adolescents, seniors and active duty military. Sherman Cole, MD long time program advisor for the adult services helped staff “walk the patients down the hill” from RMC to RPC. Included in that special group of committed employees who remain at RPC (pictured right) are Dr. Sherman Cole, business office manager Paula Pennington, occupational therapist Kitty Wayne, mental health technician Teresa Ownes and occupational therapist Donna Bales. Over the next three decades, RPC grew to become the primary market leader in providing psychiatric care to the region.

“It is only fitting that we celebrate our 30 year anniversary with ambitious growth and quality initiatives,” says Lisa St. Aubyn, Research Psychiatric Center CEO. On October 1, the Adult Unit on 7 West at RMC relocated to RPC and the Teen/Adolescent Unit at RPC relocated to 7 West at RMC. The care teams from each unit also relocated to continue to provide specialized care to these patients. The move allows the Teen/ Adolescent Program to have more space, as it grows from 18 to 25 beds. Chris Van Horn, MD advisory director for the program, is excited about the change. “The space is a real plus for this population. This will be a very calming atmosphere for the kids and families,” he says.

Pulmonology Specialist John C. Ireland, DO recently joined Kansas City Pulmonology Practice Group, bringing more than 10 years of pulmonology experience. Dr. Ireland is board-certified in Internal Medicine with subspecialties in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine. Dr. Ireland is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He is affiliated with Lee’s Summit Medical Center and Belton Regional Medical Center.

In addition, RPC is launching the Treatment Mall concept this month. This was inspired by Parthenon Pavilion, a sister facility in Nashville, TN. All of the adult patients will have the opportunity and expectation of actively participating in an individualized, intensive treatment programs. It is a progressive and exciting concept designed to maximize length of stay by aggressively targeting the particular issues of the patients. The Treatment Mall concept will be the only one of its type in the Kansas City area and only one of three in HCA overall. Over the next few years, the behavioral health teams look forward to becoming even more integrated with RMC’s medical services.

Megan Cunningham, RN recently joined the physician relations team at Research Medical Center and HCA Midwest Health as the Director of Outreach Services. Megan comes to Research Medical Center with more than nine years of experience in recruitment, development and management of clinical staff and specialty providers. Before joining the physician relations team, she served as the Director of Outpatient Services at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital where she was responsible for operational business development and growth of multiple specialty clinics in Clinton, MO.

Stacey Estes-Juve, RN, MSN recently rejoined the Research Medical Center team as a Clinical Nurse

specialist, working with the total joint replacement and integrative healthcare programs and also serving as the 6th floor unit educator. Stacey began her nursing career at Research Medical Center as a nurse on the 6th floor. Over the course of 18 years here, Stacey served as a staff nurse followed by orthopedic clinician and then as the Orthopedic Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Before rejoining Research Medical Center, Stacey was at Lee’s Summit Medical Center for three years working with their total joint replacement and bariatric programs.

Stacey is passionate about nursing, recycling and integrative healthcare/functional medicine.

Neurology Associates Celebrate New Office

White Coat Ceremony and Blessing of Hands Research College of Nursing

More than 100 traditional bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and accelerated BSN students from the Research College of Nursing were honored for their commitment to care at White Coat Ceremony and Blessing of Hands on September 23 at Rockhurst University. During the ceremony students recited the patient care oath, were cloaked with a white coat and received a blessing of their hands by Rockhurst University President Father Thomas Curran, S.J. Students were also given a specially designed pin to serve as a visual reminder of their oath and commitment to providing high quality care. These ceremonies are held at the beginning of an the academic year to welcome and initiate new nursing students.

Neurology associates at Research Medical Center cut a ribbon marking the grand opening of their beautiful new office location. The new office located at 2330 E. Meyer Blvd., Suite T401, includes nine exam rooms, four procedure rooms, seven provider offices, larger waiting room and many other features to ensure exceptional care for patients.

OPRMC Now Offers Advanced Asthma Treatment Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Research Medical Center’s sister hospital, now offers a cutting edge treatment for patients with severe asthma. Bronchial Thermoplasty or BT, is an FDAapproved bronchoscopic procedure for the treatment of severe persistent asthma. Board-certified Internal Medicine Physician, James Kaplan, M.D., has performed the procedure on five patients. BT is a non-drug procedure that uses thermal energy to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle that causes bronchial constriction in asthma. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks and providing long-lasting control in adults with severe asthma.

In 2014, the American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation launched the White Coat Ceremony initiative for nursing students. This year, Research College of Nursing was one out of only 60 hospitals in the United States to receive the $1,000 Gold-AACN White Coat Ceremony Grant to host a ceremony.

Time Critical Diagnosis (TCD) Symposium Nearly 130 physicians, nurses and allied health professionals attended the Time Critical Diagnosis (TCD) Symposium held at the Sheraton Overland Park on Friday, September 18. The symposium was designed for those involved in the care of TCD patients, including trauma, stroke and the potentially fatal form of heart attack known as STEMI. Mayor Carl Gerlach of Overland Park welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their service. Presenters included Mark Rotert, RN for Dr. Scott Bjerke, Dr. Iftehkar Ahmed, Dr. Bangalore Deepak, Dr. Megan Garcia, Dr. David McKinsey and Dr. Atul Patel.

To be considered for BT treatment, you should: • Be an adult between 18-65 years old.

• Be a non-smoker for at least the past year.

• Have severe or persistent asthma not well controlled by inhaled corticosteroids or long-acting bronchodilator medications.

The minimally invasive bronchoscopic procedure is performed by Dr. Kaplan during an outpatient procedure. The BT device applies mild heat inside the airways to reduce excessive smooth muscle through a bronchoscope. No incision is required. The treatment series requires three outpatient visits, scheduled approximately three weeks apart, each treating a different area of the lungs. After all three procedures are performed, BT treatment is complete. Each session is routinely performed under moderate sedation and takes less than an hour to complete.

In a clinical study of patients with severe asthma, a one year-follow-up of patients treated with BT experienced: • 32% decrease in severe asthma attacks • 84% reduction in asthma-related emergency room visits • 66% fewer days lost from work, school, and daily activities due to asthma • 79% of patients treated with BT saw a significant improvement in their asthma-related quality of life If you, a friend or family member are a candidate for BT, please visit oprmc.com/asthma.com

RMC Employee “I was in the hospital here at Research recently and I feel the need to tell you about my experience. Not only was the care amazing – attentive nurses, excellent physicians (like Dr. Coffman and Dr. Ahmed) but the food was good and even the admitting process through the ER was smooth. Okay, then I started getting bills. Has anyone shared with you recently about our excellent health plan? I don’t even have the highest plan and I am thrilled about the coverage. Each medicine I needed was covered 100% and Walgreen’s delivered them to me before I was discharged. The hospital stay was all covered for one deductible. I think employees need to know how great our health plan is – and it’s reasonable on the monthly amount we pay.

I’ve only worked here a year and before that I worked at a different health system in Kansas City. The health plan was way more expensive and the coverage was not this good. Thank you co-workers for the great care here and thank you for the great benefits!”

Vascular Surgeon Joe Cates, MD and ICU We would like to recognize the professionalism, compassion, and expertise of Michele RN, in the ICU waiting room, as well as Dr. Cates. Michele was patient and assuring while our loved one was in surgery. She also informed us when surgery was completed. An hour later, Dr. Cates came and spent as much time as needed to answer our questions and explain the surgery. He, too, was not in a hurry and did not leave until we were fully aware and comfortable. We watched Michele help another family who was calling to find their relative who had suffered a stroke and had just been brought here. The family member somehow called the wrong number to the ICU waiting room but Michele said, “I will help him”. And she did!

Gastroenterology - Endoscopy Team “Dr. Bradley L. Freilich (gastroenterologist) performed an endoscopy and the procedure was a breeze! I want to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. Freilich and ALL of the nurses who took care of me before and after the procedure. They were all extremely friendly, caring and exhibited the best customer service. RMC is lucky to have these professionals on staff. With much thanks and gratitude!”

Chaplains “I want to thank each of your chaplains for the love and care showed to our family when we visited our loved one in the ICU. It was so heartwarming to each day see a chaplain and have a prayer. Thank You.”

Light the Night Karaoke Throw-Down

Happy 90th Birthday, Arthur!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Light the Night Karaoke Throw-down. Who knew Research Medical Center employees were so talented? This event alone raised a little more than $1,800 making a grand total of $5,070 raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!

13th Annual Stroke Walk It was a beautiful morning to walk among survivors who received quick stroke reversal care at Research Medical Center at the 13th Annual Stroke Walk.

To make RMC patient Arthur Wilkin’s 90th birthday extra special, his care team along with many others threw him a surprise birthday celebration! His face lit up with joy as he heard happy birthday singing, was treated to chocolate cake and then surrounded by a group for a birthday picture!

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

Brookside ER Doctor and Nurse Volunteer in Africa Emergency medicine physician Steve Rovenstine, MD and registered nurse Jason Kimm, both from the Research Brookside Emergency Department and Dr. Rovenstine’s son Luke, traveled with a group of missionaries to Zambia to provide medical treatment to hundreds of ill people.

The fight to end breast cancer starts with a single step. Take that step with us at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Saturday, October 24 at 9:00am at Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO. Just a few hours of your time at the non-competitive, 3 to 5 mile walk will help bring a lifetime of change for people facing breast cancer and their families.

The group spent their time in the village of Murundu, a very poor village of approximately 3,000 people who have limited access to clean, uncontaminated water and medical treatment. For six days the group set up multiple medical clinics in various churches, schools and a doctor’s office.

Your participation can help those who are currently dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education and prevention.

“We were working out of suitcases and boxes providing medications that we brought with us,” said Dr. Rovenstine. “We had no laboratory or diagnostic tools that are common to most clinics and hospitals in the United States,” he continued.

At these clinics the group treated more than 800 people suffering from a wide variety of illnesses, infections and chronic conditions. Many of the children in Murundu suffer from malnutrition due to intestinal worms from drinking contaminated water.

“I have a strong desire to help the truly needy who lack basic resources and opportunity,” said Dr. Rovenstine.

2015 Kidney Walk

Now back in the United States, Dr. Rovenstine is looking for ways to continue partnering with the people in Zambia to help alleviate their suffering and bring them hope.

Take a life-saving step with the Transplant Institute at the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk on October 10 at 8:30 a.m. at University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC).

9th Annual Block Party & Health Fair

Why Walk?

More than 800 attendees and 104 exhibitors enjoyed a beautiful September morning dedicated to making healthy lifestyle changes at The Research Foundation’s 9th Annual Community Block Party & Health Fair held at Research Medical Center on September 12. The event included a Children’s Activity area, Injury Prevention area and the “Eat Healthy, Get Fit, Be Happy” area. Visitors also had the opportunity to remember a loved one by writing a message on the pink hot rod car.

With the increase in diabetes and high blood pressure -- two major kidney disease risk factors -- kidney disease is on the rise. The Kidney Foundation is working to reach the 1 in 3 American adults at risk with important prevention messages before it’s too late.

A Night of the Arts: Nursing Student Scholarship Fund Benefit Research College of Nursing celebrates 110 years of excellence in nursing education.

The Research Foundation will host the Research Royal Roast on November 14 at The Ritz Charles in Overland Park. Held every two years, the Roast is a casual event where physicians, businesses and friends from the community join together for an evening of fellowship and fun, while raising charitable support for The Research Foundation. The event includes a cocktail reception, dinner, silent auction, and Art Fair by local artists. Proceeds from the Roast will support scholarships for students attending the Research College of Nursing/Rockhurst University Joint Nursing Program.

UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program The UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program™ is a program built on an evidence-based curriculum developed by experts from academic medical centers and schools of nursing across the country. It is designed to effectively support new graduate nurses as they transition into their first year of practice as registered nurses in the acute care hospital setting. Core content focuses on 3 critical areas: leadership, patient outcomes, and professional role. Our former residency program ended after 6 months.

Nursing literature demonstrates that the 6-month mark is when stress levels for new nurses are at their highest and they often begin looking for other jobs, or even consider leaving the profession of nursing. By providing an evidence-based, nationally recognized 12-month program, our hope is that the extra support will provide better stress reduction, increased competence and leadership skills, and a higher retention rate for our new grads after their first year of practice.

Monthly classes for our first cohort for the UHC/AACN Nurse Residency Program™ begins October 1st. They will meet the first Thursday of each month for 12 months using a combination of small group discussions called, Tales from the Bedside, led by facilitators and large group activities that emphasize the topics we are discussing that month. After six months in the program, the nurse residents will begin working on evidence based practice projects, with assistance from the faculty of Research College of Nursing. The Academic-Clinical partnership between the hospital and the college is the hallmark of the UHC/AACN Residency program. This partnership brings additional resources and support for evidence based practice research to nurses at the bedside.

We will hire graduate nurses into the program three times a year in December/January, May/June, and July/August/September.

UHC Residency cohorts will begin in February, July, and October. Erin Leever, Director of Clinical Excellence for RMC, and Dr. Rebecca Saxton, Director of Academic-Clinical Partnerships/Professor at Research College of Nursing, are the co-coordinators of the Residency program. The small group facilitators for our first cohort are Ashley Bearkheimer from ICU, Christopher Edmondson from 4 North, Julie Anderson from 4 East, and Julia Payne from Research College of Nursing. They are excited to be selected for this role and are looking forward to mentoring graduate nurses throughout the hospital.

Participation in the Annual Competency Fair is mandatory for all nursing, radiology, respiratory and transport staff hired before December 31, 2014. The last 2015 fair will be held October 7 in the Curry Education Center located at the Brookside Campus. Staff must check in before 2:00 pm, no one will be allowed to enter after that time. Prior to arriving, you must have your 2015 Code of Conduct completed.
