One of my greatest pleasures is talking with employees, physicians, volunteers and patients. Thank you to everyone who attended our Town Hall meetings. June is national Myastheina Gravis Awareness Month, Men’s Health Month and National Safety Month. Employee Health & Infection is launching a new campaign named “Remind Me with a HIGH Five,” a friendly reminder to practice proper hand hygiene. Research Medical Center received a Grade “A” Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group! We are the only hospital in the nation to earn an “A” twice and be named Top Hospital by this prestigious group! This honor reflects the consistent top quality care we provide our patients.

Midwest Transplant Network awarded Research Medical Center the Excellence in Donation Award for our partnership in saving lives through organ and tissue donation. This award recognizes our 2014 organ and tissue conversion donation outcomes, having at least four eligible donors with a conversion rate of greater than or equal to 80 percent.

Dr. Lawrence Named to National Board American Heart Association

Willie Lawrence, MD, was named to the National Board of the American Heart Association (AHA) for the second year in a row. He is also the national chairperson of AHA’s Consumer Health and Quality Coordinating Committee and one of AHA’s national leaders shaping their hypertension programs. Dr. Lawrence lives his commitment to helping patients in so many ways.

Research Psychiatric Center’s “You Spoke, We Listened” tree has bloomed into something beautiful! Nurses shared why they liked working at RPC by placing blue birds and apples on the tree.

DAISY Award Program Launch Nurses enjoyed cinnamon rolls to celebrate the launch of the The DAISY Award Program.

Each month one “Extraordinary Nurse” will be recognized by the Research Medical Center Retention Council as the DAISY Award Honoree at a public ceremony in their unit and will receive a beautiful certificate, DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture. Additionally, the unit will celebrate with Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls.

Welcome New Leaders Ryan Hamilton, BS, MHA was promoted to Area Practice Manager for Research Medical Center.

Ryan joined HCA Physician Services Group in 2013. Since joining HCA, Ryan has managed Midwest Heart and Vascular Specialists - Cardiology at Menorah Medical Center. In January 2014, he assumed management of the Midwest Heart and Vascular Specialists - Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery group covering the Research, Centerpoint, Lee’s Summit, Overland Park and Menorah locations.

Ryan completed his post-graduate administrative fellowship with Mercy Health in Springfield, MO. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Columbia College and his Masters in Health Services Management from the University of Columbia School of Medicine. In Ryan’s new role he will provide strategic and operational leadership for the cardiology and surgical specialty practices in the Research market.

Wes Mitchell was recently named the new Senior Facility IT&S Director for Research Medical Center, Research Brookside Campus, Research Psychiatric Center, Research College of Nursing, Surgery Center of Kansas City and Belton Regional Medical Center. Wes has served in a variety of roles within HCA including Technical Analyst, System Administrator and for the last three years as Manager of Technical Services for the Physician Services Group (PSG). As Manager of Technical Services for PSG, he led a team of ten technicians supporting approximately 150 clinic locations and 2,000 users.

Marjorie “Wongs” Wongskhaluang, MD Marjorie “Wongs” Wongskhaluang, MD Infectious Disease Associates of Kansas City Dr. Wongs recently joined Infectious Disease Associates of Kansas City at Research Medical Center. She is board certified in both Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine.

She completed her Infectious Disease fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Her internal medicine training was completed at Indiana University and her medical degree was earned from American University of the Caribbean. Prior to joining Infectious Disease Associates of Kansas City, she was faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia as a clinical instructor in the Department of Medicine.

Research College of Nursing Graduation We are excited to welcome approximately fifty graduate nurses selected from a variety of schools to our Graduate Nurse Residency Program. The twelve month program was recently redesigned through the collaboration of Research Medical Center and Research College of Nursing.

In addition to the clinical orientation on the individual nursing units the Graduate Nurse Residency Program provides an evidence-based curriculum that includes strategies for time management, prioritization, communication, and leadership.

I C.A.R.E Department Spotlight Cardic Cath Lab

The Cardiac Cath Lab is one aspect of the cardiovascular services at Research Medical Center. We assist physicians with invasive procedures to primarily diagnose and treat blocked arteries throughout many major areas of the body.

Each case requires a core of four individuals including the doctor, a nurse to provide medications including sedation, a technologist who is specially trained to scrub in with the doctor, and someone to monitor and record each case.

Our patients come to us scared and confused, sometimes in the midst of having an acute heart attack. We excel at providing compassionate and skillful care to alleviate the patients’ concerns and treating them as efficiently and timely as possible. With an acute heart attack we have less than ninety minutes from the patient’s arrival to open up the blocked artery before permanent heart damage is done. We put patients first by treating them with respect, providing explanations, answering questions, and taking an interest in them personally. With seven staff members making up a 24/7 call team of 3 we can spend 12-14 days on call out of 28. The beat goes on!

I care because if I am able to save one life then I believe I have been here for a purpose and done my job. I care because I am here often as a last resort for patients and truly here to make them realize the value of their life as well as what life has to offer. Patients are often at their most vulnerable states when admitted so I care because it is my job and duty to make a difference in their life and be their support when no one else is. I care because I am here to restore confidence in all my patients and make them realize they have a purpose. I care because to one patient I might be able to make a difference and safe a life. I care because I may be able to bring sunshine to someone’s darkness.

Research Brookside Campus John Goodwin, EVS Technician My name is John Goodwin and I work in Environmental Services at Research Brookside. The reason I care is I work in the Pavilion and the ED on the weekend. I see people come in and they are in pain whether they have to go to therapy or being seen in the ED. If I can help them in any way or by just saying “Hello, my name is John. Is there anything I can get for you or ask the staff for anything.” I have had to come to therapy so I truly understand. It may be that getting their mind off of what is bothering them for one moment, that is worth it to me.

Research Medical Center Jessica Smith, Nuclear Medicine Technologist I care because I love working with the team that I do. I care because my work helps save a life or change a life. I care because I love making my patients feel happy and safe when they may be scared and sad. I care because caring for people makes me feel good about what I do!

I highly recommend this hospital if you every have to go to a hospital. The nursing staff is awesome. After being there for a while, they become more like family. “I was in RMC Friday and Saturday in the Vascular unit and I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful experience I had. I started in the ER at Brookside and received great care from Dr. (David) Strickland and Debbie. I was then transported to the main campus. Dr. Samer El Dirani was my hospitalist and I can’t say enough good things about him. He was confident, direct and compassionate which made me feel safe and secure. My three nurses were Mary, Charlene and Bev. They kept me informed every step of the way and were the most caring nurses I have had in a long time. The food was excellent. I had an echocardiogram and the tech was also exceptional. Paige Baker’s son Cody transported me from the room to where I had the echo.

He is a sweet young man and very caring.”

Cancer Treatments A Multidisciplinary Approach to Complex GI Oncology

On April 11, The Ed Bixby Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education at Research Medical Center, The Liver and Pancreas Institute, The Research Foundation and INMED, presented a symposium,“A Multidisciplinary Approach to Complex GI Oncology.” The symposium explored complex GI cancers, Hepatocellular and Pancreatobiliary disease, new roles for radiation therapy and innovative surgical approaches for GI cancer treatment. The Liver and Pancreas Institute physicians including Joe Cates, MD, Faisal Jafri, MD, Jaswinder Singh, MD and Bradley Freilich, MD, were joined by their esteemed colleagues, Richard Geer, MD and Andrew Kennedy,MD from Sarah Cannon in Nashville, TN. There were 100 participants ranging from RNs to MDs, PTs to Case Managers. Plans are underway for the 2nd Annual Complex GI Symposium.

Radiation Therapy Offered at Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health Sarah Cannon Cancer Network at Research Medical Center offers some of the most advanced radiation oncology technologies and services unmatched in the region. Radiation is an effective way to treat, control and cure various types of cancer.

The goal of radiation therapy is to cure cancer, or to control the growth of the cancer to relieve symptoms.

This type of therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy or hormone treatment to achieve desired goals.

Research Medical Center has two radiation oncologists, John Sheldon, MD and David Shaeffer, MD. Both physicians are highly trained specialists in external beam radiation treatments, high dose rate brachytherapy and other cutting edge radiation treatments. Patients travel from all areas of the city for this level of expertise. Behind both of these great physicians is a team of experienced nurses, physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists.

NICU Nurse Chrishaunda Bean Featured in KC Star’s Making A Difference Chrishaunda Bean, RN, BSN, works in the NICU at Research Medical Center. She was hired in 1998 as a

respiratory therapist at Research, where she was assigned to work in the NICU. After discovering she wanted a more hands-on approach with the babies, Bean went to St. Luke’s College of Nursing. In 2006 she graduated with a BSN. She applied for the only NICU position that was open at Research and was hired; now Bean is a full-time night charge nurse. Always a team player, Bean serves on the NICU Practice Council, which meets monthly to re-evaluate, modify or overhaul practices.

She was chosen as Employee of the Month in December of 2010 because of participation in unit council precepts, her pride in the NICU unit, and selfless nature. “I wanted to become a NICU nurse because I knew I could make a difference,” Bean said. “It’s rewarding to watch the babies go home with their parents after I cared for them.”

Remind Me with a HIGH FIVE As an institutional priority at Research Medical Center, hand hygiene is the single most important measure to prevent infections and protect patients. The Infection Prevention Department is introducing a new hand hygiene program to increase awareness. The reason? Forgetting to preform hand hygiene is a hazard to health, especially in hospitals. Fast-paced activity is the norm in hospital environments, which can lead to hand hygiene lapses. The new campaign, “REMIND Me with a HIGH FIVE,” will assist co-workers to be mindful when observing lack of proper hand hygiene. The raised hand serves as a reminder. Watch for more information as the program rolls out this summer.

Annual Competency Fair

Participation in the Annual Competency Fair is mandatory for all nursing, radiology, respiratory and transport staff hired before December 31, 2014.

The Competency Fairs will be held in the Curry Education Center located at the Brookside Campus on June 9 or October 7. Staff must check in before 2:00pm.

Prior to arriving, you must have your 2015 Code of Conduct completed.
