RMC just opened the new cardiovascular hybrid operating room. Our level three NICU remodel is complete and we have plans to renovate the rest of the Women’s Services area. The newly remodeled neurology offices will open on August 31. This will give patients easy access to neurologists and neurosurgeons on the same floor. A lot of new equipment and technology has been put into action this summer. Brilliant teams of employees and physicians are constantly being trained to deliver the most advanced care to patients using the latest tools!

Now seems to be a great time to say thank you to lots of Research volunteers who have been serving in many ways in the community. Develop Our People Welcome New Leaders Erin Leever, BSN, RN, OCN recently joined Research Medical Center as the Director of Education/ Clinical Excellence. Erin comes to Research with 13 years of nursing experience in oncology, education, management and informatics. Her most recent position was Clinical Solutions Development Analyst with Ascension Information Services at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. She earned her BSN from Regis University in Denver, CO and has been certified in Oncology since 2006. She will soon begin working toward her Masters at the Research College of Nursing. Erin serves as the Nursing Services Officer for the Medical Reserve Corps of Greater Kansas City MO, an organization committed to improving the disaster resilience and health of communities through education, training and volunteer service.

Linnea Julian, RN recently joined Research Medical Center as the Director of Center for Outpatient Surgery (COPS) located at Research Medical Center Brookside Campus. Linnea comes to Research with more than 20 years of nursing, managerial and leadership experience. In her most recent position as an Operating Room Manager at North Kansas City Hospital, she focused on the daily operations of a 15 suite operating room, collaboration with staff and physicians as well as the clinical leader in a multi-million dollar renovation project.

Neurosurgeon Jayson Neil, MD Jayson Neil, MD Midwest Neuroscience Institute Jayson Neil, MD, is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon with the HCA Midwest Health Neuroscience Institute at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO. With fellowships in both skull base/neurovascular surgery and spine surgery, Dr. Neil offers a broad background in neurosurgery, with extensive clinical research experience and numerous publications, papers and presentations to his credit. Among his research projects, Dr. Neil studied the use of MRI in pediatric head traumas and in brain tumors, and the use of stem cells in spinal cord injury. Over the course of his training, Dr. Neil received multiple honors and awards for academics, research and surgical expertise. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians.

First DAISY Award Honoree Julie “Jules” Anderson, RN 4 East

Julie Anderson, RN is the first nurse at Research Medical Center to be honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses!

“I awoke in the hospital feeling worried, upset, down spirited, and sick. A new nurse named Jules came into the room with a smiling face and uplifting voice of joy that immediately seemed to uplift me, and make me feel better, and put new life into my day. I was worried and had lots of questions on my mind and Jules was here so I started seeking information, answers, comfort and help….

I was worried but she told me how I could get through my tests easier and how to do them with no problems –this which calmed me down- and gave me the strength and nerves to do the tests. She gave me uplifting advice and courage to go through the tests, and with her cheerfulness towards me I was able do it. Through God and his angel, Jules, I managed to have a good day.”

Build Our Brand Concussion Discussion Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow or jolt to the head. The injury can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. You can’t see a concussion but signs and symptoms can show up immediately or not be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. An undiagnosed concussion can affect a person’s abilities at work or school and in everyday activities.

Neurosurgeons Peter Basta, MD; William Rosenberg, MD; neurologist Iftekhar Ahmed, MD; and orthopedic surgeon Lance Snyder, MD have joined together in the effort to help prevent and treat concussion in athletes.

Dr. Ahmed presented about concussions in Clinton, MO.

This team of physicians are hosting “Concussion Discussions” for parents, athletes, coaches and community members to heighten the awareness of concussion occurrence, how to recognize signs and symptoms, and educate participants on concussion prevention.

Dr. Austin Lehr, surgeon at Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center, discussed the increase in burn injuries during the summer months, particularity around the Fourth of July.

Dr. Lehr shared, “60 percent of all firework related burns happen two weeks before and two weeks after the Fourth of July.” In addition to fireworks, campfires, grills and fire pits are also the cause of many summer burns.

Deliver Exceptional Care A First for RMC, New Hybrid Operating Room Research Medical Center’s new Cardiovascular Hybrid OR is now in full operation! Wednesday, July 22 marked the opening of the new Hybrid Operating Room - another great day in history for Research Medical Center. Opening week, vascular surgeons Joe Cates, MD and Jeffrey Cameron, MD (pictured below) were the first surgeons to perform procedures in the Hybrid OR. Each surgeon worked side-by-side with his team of experts from the cath lab, radiology, OR, nursing and others to preform complex vascular procedures using the new technology.

The Hybrid OR’s new Banyon technology adds a platform of convenience for physicians and OR staff. The latest type of visual dashboard is an integrated software-based solution to provide easier access to all relevant patient information, including diagnostics - right from the OR. Congratulations to all the teams who worked together to make the Hybrid OR a reality for our physicians and patients. Planning, IT&S, construction and a lot of clinical expertise went into the layout and design!

Kyphoplasty offered at RMC Interventional Radiologist Thomas P. Sweeney, MD at Research Medical Center offers a minimally invasive solution for back pain and spinal fractures. Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive, orthopaedic treatment that stabilizes spinal fractures, thereby reducing pain and correcting vertebral deformity.

“This procedure helps reduce back pain and gives patients suffering from pain and other health concerns related to kyphosis relief and a better quality of life,” Dr. Sweeney says. “Time spent in the hospital is minimal, sometimes just one day.”

Benefits of kyphoplasty include, correction of vertebral body deformity and significant reduction in back pain, quality of life and mobility, including the ability to perform daily activities such as walking, hobbies and work. Also reported is a significant reduction in the number of days per month that a patient remains in bed and a low complication rate of less than one percent.

3D Mammography Now you have a choice.

3D Mammography, the newest breast imaging technology available, is now offered at Research Medical Center and at the Research Brookside Campus.

Three-dimensional (3D) mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis, is a type of digital mammography in which x-ray machines are used to take pictures of thin slices of the breast from different angles and computer software is used to reconstruct an image. This process is similar to how a computed tomography (CT) scanner produces images of structures inside of the body. A good analogy for 3D mammography is to think of the pages in a book. If you look down at the cover you cannot see all of the pages – but when you open it up, you can go through the entire book page-by-page to see everything between the covers. 3D mammography is designed with the same concept in mind.

3D Mammography provides these diagnostic advantages: • Multiple studies have reported that the 3D mammography exam significantly increases breast cancer detection, including earlier detection, with a more than 40% increase in the detection of invasive cancers.

• Clearer lesion images • Reduction in the number of unnecessary biopsies, minimizing patient anxiety and unnecessary costs 3D Mammography is recommended for patients who have the following: • Previous mammograms with ambiguous or inconclusive results • Dense breast tissue • Been previously called back for repeat breast scans • Undergone biopsies for suspicious masses or lesions in the past • Breast cancer, or have a family history of cancer Traditional 2D Mammogram is also available and is an option for many women.

A note on potential out-of-pocket cost: As new technology becomes available, it is often normal to see delays as Medicare and private insurance companies establish reimbursement for these services. We will submit the paperwork to your insurance company for payment, but if denied, you will be responsible for any out-of-pocket costs, deductibles or copayments as determined by your insurance company for the 3D mammogram.

Department Spotlight Sports Medicine Program

Research Medical Center’s Sports Medicine Program is expanding and reaching into schools and the community like never before! The program is made up of Research Orthopedics and Reconstructive Specialists - Lance Snyder, MD; Tara Jackson, NP; athletic trainers, and physical therapists.

As part of the program, more RMC physicians are joining the “Concussion Discussion” effort to help RMC educate about the risks and treatments for sports-related concussion.

We asked our Sports Medicine Team which of the I CARE behaviors they most excel at and how they always put patients first. Here’s their reply: “We offer patients same-day orthopedic appointment availability. Convenience for every patient needing help is very important.”

RMC’s Sports Medicine Program impacts the community by offering serious athletes and weekend warriors the opportunity to gain skill by educating them about exercises/stretches and how to gain strength. Many need diet modifications to reach peak performance. That’s a part of the program too! This team is motivated to help people improve their lifestyle in every way by developing a program according each person’s desires.

RMC has athletic trainers at several locations including Center High School and Middle School, Rockhurst University, Bishop O’Hara High School, Heartland Soccer, KC Blues Rugby and RMC is the corporate sponsor for FCKC. These practitioners also participate in many community educational offerings.

The Sports Medicine team takes great pride in standing behind their commitment to patients and the community. Anyone can call the clinic any time to ask a sports medicine or orthopedic question and we will offer help right away. The team is very proud to regularly receive compliments about being approachable.

2015 Employee Engagement

More Research (RMC, RPC and RB) employees took the 2015 Employee Engagement Survey than in 2014 helping us reach our goal of 89% participation. We also reached our goal of 71% percent for overall favorability! This means more employees are happy to work here than were last year and this is great news!

It’s a nice improvement from last year.

Community Block Party & Health Fair: September 12 Join us for the 9th Annual Community Block Party & Health Fair on Saturday, September 12! The Research Foundation will once again partner with Research Medical Center to host the 9th Annual Community Block Party & Health Fair to promote healthy lifestyles in the urban core of Kansas City. The event will be held in the west parking lot of Research Medical Center from 10 a.m.- 1p.m.

The Block Party & Health Fair will feature more than 90 healthrelated exhibitors, raffle prizes and free health screenings. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend. The event will also include a Children’s Activity area, Injury Prevention area and the “Eat Healthy, Get Fit, Be Happy” area.

The Children’s Activity area, sponsored by Research College of Nursing, will include carnival games, face and fingernail painting and the Kansas City Zoomobile. The Kansas City Public Library will also provide free children’s books.

The Injury Prevention area, sponsored by ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City, will feature local law enforcement including KCPD, KCFD Fire truck, the American Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Seat Belt Convincer. The Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City will provide 100 free helmets while Safe Kids will provide 40 free car seats. Car seat technicians will also be on site to provide free car seat safety checks.

The “Eat Healthy, Get Fit, Be Happy” area will feature healthy cooking and exercise demonstrations along with free healthy snacks. The Ivanhoe Farmer’s Market will also be on site selling fresh, home grown produce. The first 50 attendees to register for the 1-Mile Fun Walk will receive a $10 gift card to be used at the Ivanhoe Farmers Market (one gift card per family).

Clinical Excellence Update Annual Competency Fair: Last Chance!

Participation in the Annual Competency Fair is mandatory for all nursing, radiology, respiratory and transport staff hired before December 31, 2014.

The last 2015 fair will be held October 7 in the Curry Education Center located at the Brookside Campus. Staff must check in before 2:00pm, no one will be allowed to enter after that time. Prior to arriving, you must have your 2015 Code of Conduct completed.

The Cost of Stock

What is the ESPP? The ESPP allows you to set aside a small amount of each paycheck, on an after-tax basis, to purchase shares of the HCA stock at a discount.

There are four times each year when you will have an opportunity to buy shares of HCA stock.

How the ESPP Works

Through the ESPP, you will get a 10% discount and will purchase stock at 90% of the fair market value as of the last business day of the payroll deduction period.

For example, if the stock price is $50 on the last day of the period, here is how your stock price would be calculated:

You decide how much you want to contribute on an after-tax basis.

You can contribute from 1% to 15% of your eligible pay (up to a maximum of $25,000 per calendar year).

2.

Starting with your first paycheck of the offering period, ESPP contributions are deducted from your eligible pay.

You would pay $45 per share for stock with a fair market value of $50 making a potential profit of $5 per share!

3.

At the end of the offering period, your contributions are used to purchase as many shares of HCA stock as your payroll deductions will buy. If the amount you invested is not enough to buy a whole share, a fractional share will be credited to your account.

The discount received on the purchase of stock through the ESPP is recorded as ordinary income on your paycheck, and the appropriate taxes will be withheld.

Your purchased shares are credited to a limited individual brokerage account accessible online through HCArewards.com and maintained

by Computershare.

Who is Eligible?

You are eligible to participate in the ESPP if you are a full-time, part-time or PRN employee of an HCA-affiliated facility and you have been employed for at least two consecutive month as of the first day of the offering period.

Note: The following employees may not be eligible for the ESPP due to current agreements or regulatory compliance:

• Employees at facilities participating in a collective bargaining agreement or a facility that mirrors a facility with a collective bargaining agreement.

• Certain employed physicians.

• Employees of a partnership.

Keeping Track of Your Bank Account • To access your account, log on to HCArewards.com and click on Employee Stock Purchase Plan.

• You can also call (855) 422-7862 to check your balance or sell stock.

• You will receive a quarterly statement which shows the number of shares in your account and the market value. You should keep this statement for your records since it is a permanent record of your stock purchase. You may need the statements to assist in your income tax preparation for the year when you sell the shares.
