Allow me to apolog1ze for the delay m releasmg Torch 2011 We were faced with many technical difficulties but we managed to solve 98% of them It was a " tough " learning experience but I did not abandon the sh1p
"The Metamorphosis of education", many people will look at last year's theme from a techn1cal point of view I would like to tackle it from a human1st1c pomt of v1ew
In my opinion teachers and students m modern educat1on need a surv1val k1t for everyday living They need a toothpick to remmd them to look for the good quallt1es m each other You may be the only teacher/student who says somethmg pos1tive to them that day A rubber band to remind them that they need to be flexible Thmgs don 't always go the way we plan, but flex1bdity will help to work things out A band aid to remind them that somet1mes we do more than teach/ learn, we help heal hurt feelings broken dreams and lend an ear to a problem A pencil to remmd them to be thankful and we should I1st our blessings daily but also encourage our students to I1st the1rs too and to be proud of the1r accomplishments An eraser to remind them that we are human and make m1stakes, and 1t's ok We must all be able to learn from our mistakes
Students and Teachers m modern education must be willing to show each other how much they care!!!

Dear Students,
Each year I get to make a short speech at the beginning of the commencement for our graduates In a sense, this talk is for all of our students so I will repeat it here in the Torch for those who were not at the graduat1on of the class of 2011
Let me begrn w1th a profound statement, the world has changed I used to prepare for th1s commencement speech, and I have given quite a few over the years, by consulting a familiar book, Bartlett's Famous Quotations My goal was to find a good quote for the occasion and weave it into a message appropriate for the commencement. This year however I found that I went to some other sources for inspiration Twitter Facebook, and You Tube. And, I have a confession to make It was a lot more fun to search Twitter Facebook, and You Tube than to research Bartlett's
I found some really interesting things on Twitter Mostly the messages were from other people who were looking for rdeas for graduatiOn speeches, or lamentrng the pressure that therr parents were putting on them to wrrte a speech One message was from someone graduating who had th is Tweet Let's wrap up these speeches pleaseeeee I want my dip loma." Many of the Tweets simp ly said "working on my speech" and jewe ls l ike OMG LOL and ROFL. Some said they would post their speech on Facebook
So, I wandered over to Facebook and found that a lot of people Liked thrngs on other peopl e's wal ls and that 16 new people wanted to be my frrend and 5 people had poked me I also learned that there IS a wall dedicated to graduat1on speeches about Facebook Facebook in truth was not too hel pful
I quickly jumped over to You Tube and it's great I watched a number of very poignant speeches and the two best were of Amy Poehler at Harvard and President Obama at Arizona State University Both had great things to say. One theme between them is that your parents want very little from you The bottom line is that they want you to be happy and to smile and to pose for some p1ctures w1th some relatives, even your cousrns w1th lops1ded grrns, and to talk with them Both also talked about putting down the iPhone, Blackberry and iPad and to spend some t1me w1th the people you love Look them in the eye smile and hold their hands Rather than spending time with Facebook it's much richer to have some face time with the people who are important to you
In all the graduation speeches there is another message that emerges and that is that while you have made a great accomplishment by being here today and becoming a graduate of this great institution, there is so much more to do rn your life and you have so much more to give to the lives of others Not surprisingly, this led me back to Bartlett's and the quotations It seems these messages of rnsp1rat1on about enr1c hrng the lives of others like you have done so well here at IC 1n your communrty serv1ce act1vit1es have been around for eons One person sa1d To put the world right we must put the nation in order to put the nation in order we must first put the family in order· to put the family in order we must first cultivate our personal life we must first set our hearts right. This quote is from Confucious so perhaps maybe the world hasn't cha nged all that much in spite of the new social media
