Anniversary Newsle er Vol. 10, Issue 1

Discovering Excellence: Half Term Highlights As we embark on this exci ng journey through the first half of Term 1 in the 2023/2024 school year, we are thrilled to bring you our "Discovering Excellence" newsle er. It has been an even ul and enriching me so far, and we are excited to share with you some of the key highlights from the past seven weeks.

Let's dive into the diverse tapestry of experiences that make Ibadan International School a truly excep onal place of learning for our community of learners.

Welcoming Our Students Back The first day of the term marked a heart-warming reunion for our students who returned from their summer adventures to once again fill our School with their energy and enthusiasm. The air was filled with laughter, as friends shared stories of their me away and teachers welcomed their students back joyfully. It was a day of renewed connec ons and the promise of new learning adventures.

New Beginnings We extended a very warm welcome to the 34 new families who joined the IIS School Community this session during our New Parents' Orienta on Session which took place on Wednesday, September 20th. It is great to see how quickly our 51 new students have all se led down and how well they are learning in their various classes and sec ons.

Educa onal Excellence We are excited to shine the spotlight on the recently held CAIE IGCSE Teacher Training Professional Development event, a collabora ve effort between IIS and the Bri sh Council, Nigeria. This event, hosted by IIS, brought an invaluable opportunity to enhance our teaching methodologies. Our dedicated educators par cipated in insigh ul sessions and gained fresh perspec ves and strategies to foster educa onal excellence. We believe that inves ng in the professional growth of our teachers is key to ensuring our students receive the best possible educa on. With this enriching experience, we look forward to witnessing our students' con nued growth and success as they navigate the IGCSE curriculum with excellence.

A er-School Adventures This term, we are offering 20 op onal A er-School Clubs in Pre-School, 21 in Junior School/Senior School Year 1, and 5 Friday Clubs in Senior School Years 2-4. These op onal A er-School Clubs allow our students to discover and pursue their passions and interests beyond the classroom as well as offer opportuni es for them to interact with other students across age ranges. From “Awesome Authors” to “Origami”, from ''E que e'' to ''Taekwondo'', there is something for everyone on this term's club schedules!

Diving into Learning We are pleased to announce the reintroduc on of swimming classes to our curriculum. This addi on is designed to promote not only physical well-being but also vital aqua c skills. Our Junior School students will have the opportunity to dive into a world of learning that extends beyond the classroom, fostering confidence and water safety. As we encourage our students to embrace this exci ng endeavour, we look forward to the personal growth and teamwork that will surely flourish in the pool. At IIS, we are commi ed to providing a holis c educa on that encompasses not only academics but also the development of essen al life skills. Parental Involvement

Each term, we organise workshops and webinars to provide our parents with insights into our curriculum and to offer a glimpse into our educa onal approach here at Ibadan International School. In the most recent PYP workshop, we focused on approaches to teaching and learning for our Pre- and Junior School parents. We aimed to shed light on the dis nc ve PYP elements that can be found in all our classrooms. We also held a Senior School Year 1 Parents' Orienta on Workshop that offered parents a comprehensive overview of the year ahead. It provided a pla orm for parents to meet the Senior School Leadership Team and gain insights into the curriculum and expecta ons for their children's first year in Senior School.

With fantas c turnouts from both new and more seasoned parents, it was heartening to see mums and dads eager to delve into our educa onal methods and gain a deeper understanding of how we teach what we teach at IIS during these workshops. We appreciate all our parents' ac ve involvement and look forward to more engaging sessions in the future.

Celebra ng Nigeria's Independence At our first Student Council event of the year, our students came to School donning green and white a re in celebra on of Nigeria's 63rd Independence Day. Students had a blast while learning fascina ng facts about Nigeria, crea ng an engaging and educa onal experience for all.

Honouring Our Educators On the 5th of October, 2023, we not only celebrated World Teachers' Day but also devoted me inten onally to express our hear elt gra tude to our excep onal teaching staff. These dedicated individuals play a pivotal role in shaping the future, as well as inspiring young minds while also nurturing a love for learning. Their unwavering commitment and passion are the driving forces behind the success of our School. As we commemorated the day, we took a moment to thank our educators for their reless efforts, boundless dedica on and the immeasurable impact they have on the lives of our students. It is through their guidance and mentorship that our students con nue to flourish and reach new heights.

Into Our Community Field trips are invaluable experiences that bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world explora on, providing students with hands-on opportuni es to apply their knowledge. So far this term, our students have embarked on several enriching fieldtrips: the IGCSE Environmental Management and Geography students par cipated in an event at the IITA Forest Centre to mark World Migratory Bird Day, the IGCSE Physics students visited PHCN to learn about power transmission, and the Grade 6 students explored the IITA Gene Bank and Biotechnology Labs, each adventure offering unique insights into their respec ve subject areas.

Empowering the Girl Child On the 11th of October, 2023, we marked the UN Interna onal Day of the Girl Child, emphasizing the importance of girls' rights and equality. It was a day dedicated to celebra ng the strength, poten al, as well as resilience of girls around the world. As we reflected on this significant day, we recognised the need to empower and upli our girls, providing them with every opportunity to thrive and make their mark on the world. We believe that by championing girls' rights, we are fostering a brighter and more equitable future for all. Thank you to our en re school community for joining us in this meaningful celebra on.

Safety First As part of our annual Health and Safety Week, we offered daily health and safety sessions for students, staff, and parents which spanned from Monday, October 16th to Friday, October 20th, 2023. Check out the highlights below!

Monday: Safety Starts Here!

Monday was all about safety. Students received fire emergency precau ons training and a fire drill and they also reviewed hand washing techniques. They also received complimentary bars of soap from Al Canah Ltd. Staff had blood pressure checks and workplace safety training.

Tuesday: Smile Brighter!

On Tuesday, students got dental check-ups from TOS Dental Clinic and each received a complimentary toothbrush!

We provided personal safety training for students and shared childhood vaccina on informa on with parents.

Wednesday: Get Moving!

Wednesday was Workout Day. Staff and students enjoyed a school-wide aerobics session, and parents had blood pressure checks during pick-up and drop-off.

Thursday: Nourish and Flourish!

Dr. (Mrs.) Lafinhan discussed healthy nutri on at assembly. Students also had a lockdown drill, parents enjoyed a yoga session, and staff received first aid training. Healthy lunch awards were given to all students who came to School with a balanced meal!

Friday: Feel-Good Day Friday featured the Narra ve 4 project to enhance emo onal intelligence for our Senior School students.

Our Pre- and Junior School students prac ced acts of kindness all day, and our staff had a workplace wellbeing training and a yoga session. Last but definitely not least, we were thrilled to host Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, CEO and Founder of ASIDO Founda on in our Parent Webinar on Anxiety Disorders in Children.

Academic Milestones Our Junior School students recently showcased their knowledge and skills during their first PYP Summa ve presenta ons of the year, concluding their first PYP Units of Inquiry. These presenta ons not only let our students shine, but also provide a means to assess their understanding of the various concepts, skills, subject knowledge and ideas taught. Our Pre- and Junior School PYP students also received half-term IIS IB PYP Learner Profile Awards to acknowledge their growth as they work towards becoming interna onally-minded life-long learners! We're proud to witness our students' growth and look forward to their on-going academic journey in the second half of the term.

In addi on to our Junior School achievements, we were also thrilled to recognize our Senior School students who received half-term subject endeavour awards for their outstanding dedica on to studies in specific subjects.

The 20th Annual Mathbuster Community Development Challenge Begins!

The IIS Mathbuster Challenge serves an academic purpose of enhancing and refining our students' number fact recall, which helps foster confidence in Numeracy. To achieve this, each student, from Nursery all the way to Senior School Year 4, is assigned a set target to accomplish throughout the month of November. In addi on to a aining proficiency in Mathema cal skills, the Mathbuster Challenge also helps us achieve a fundraising goal designated to a community project. This year, our funds will go towards the Sabo Primary Health Care Centre.

Congratula ons to Our French Students!

At IIS, we teach French as an addi onal language to all our students from age 4 (Pre-KG) to age 14 (Senior School Year 2). Our students begin si ng the French DELF European language proficiency exams in Grade 4. While we are expec ng our students' DELF cer ficates from the exams taken in May/June 2023, we are delighted to announce that two of our students have been recognised for their accomplishments this year! Congratula ons to Aminata Dieng for achieving the highest DELF Junior score in Oyo State and Veda Viswanath for achieving the highest DELF Prim score at IIS! Bravo! Nous sommes fièrs de vous!

Art Compe

on

The annual IIS Calendar Art Compe on is now on-going. This year's theme is “IIS Dreamscape: Aspira ons and Inspira ons”.

Students are invited to delve into their dreams and inspira ons for IIS with their artwork capturing the people who inspire them, the places within IIS that fuel their dreams, or any other aspect that symbolizes their IIS journey.

Winners of the Art Challenge will have their artwork featured on the 2024 IIS Desktop Calendar! Deadline for submissions is November 15th.

IIS@20!

We opened our doors here at IIS in September 2003 with just 27 students and a big dream to become the first IB PYP School in Nigeria! 20 years on, and not only have we accomplished this goal, but we are an exemplary IB PYP World School, among an élite cadre of ins tu ons capable of offering a global standard in interna onal educa on.

And even more, we have gone above and beyond all expecta ons by becoming a decorated and award winning Cambridge Interna onal School, having been recognized as Top in the World for IGCSEs for our consistently excep onal exam results and spotless ethical examina on conduct record.

We are really proud of what we have accomplished, and we hope you are too! Star ng in December, we will be running a series of events to celebrate this milestone, star ng - of course! - with our students. Stay tuned for more info as we celebrate IIS@20!

Anniversary

Birthdays at IIS If you are sending a birthday cake to School to mark your child's birthday, kindly ensure you also send disposable plates, napkins, and spoons or forks, otherwise we will not be able to distribute the cake to your child's classmates.

We urge parents who insist on sending in party packs, to kindly keep them modest.

Please be aware that taking photos of students who are not your own children is not allowed in School. This is to protect the privacy of our students. Personal photographers are NOT allowed in the School premises to take photos of your child on their birthday. Thank you for your coopera on and understanding on this ma er!
