Letter from the Editor...

First of all, Happy New Year! Welcome back! I think I can speak on behalf of the team when I say that we hope you did excellently in any exams and/or coursework you had. Well done! Back to business as usual now and what an edition we have to show for it. The past few weeks have seen us make a few changes to the magazine and the way we do things. Hopefully all for the better, I think you will agree. As always, let us know via Facebook, Twitter or email if you want to be involved in any part of the magazine from writing articles, taking photos, having an active part in the overall production or even just having your say! With everything from reviews of past events to useful bits of info you may not have already had, and even tips/signposts for things to come; this issue should have something for everyone. I am especially proud at the size of this issue compared to previous months and apologise in advance for the cheesiness but I have to thank my team for putting in a lot of hard work to bring this edition to you. I feel that the magazine is really going from strength to strength and it is through hard work, team play and determination that we see results. All that really leaves to say is get stuck in to this month's iAston! Enjoy, Ryan

News

A.S.U. News What's been going on this past month in Aston Students' Union?

AU Week Last month saw the return of Athletic Union Week with events run by the AU team from the very successful (if slightly downsized) REfreshers Fair to the inter-club netball tournament (congratulations Cricket). Not only that but the ever-popular Rugby Animal House Party saw all creatures great and small having a fantastic time. Seriously, there were frogs, tigers, dogs, mice, bees and even butterflies. Of course, one couldn't mention AU week without the spectacular AU Ball. Students in their finery turned up to Villa Park to enjoy a three course meal, try their luck with a spin on the raffle and of course, strut their stuff on the dance floor. Even the Executive Team couldn't resist the chance to scrub up.

News ...And what's coming up?

Go Green Week This month from the 10th to the 14th, Aston goes Green. that's everything from envoronmental awareness to up-cycling, canalside walks and even tree planting. This event is the culmination of hard work from the Equalities and Environment officer and the Vice President of Education and Welfare amongs other organisations and societies in the Union. For full details see page 11 but I do urge you to get involved and play your part in making Aston a Greener, happier place!

What else? February is a real action-packed month! Events from RAG like the Liverpool Mega Raid, the Punch Party and the Apocalypse Bar Crawl all helping to raise money for charity whilst having a great time. The second Union Council of 2014 is this month on the 20th. This is a time when you can make your voice as a student heard. (Also, remember that is looks GREAT on your Auntie application if you have been active at Council). On top of all that, Nominations are open for the elections to decide 2014-15's Union Executive team. Make sure you get your nomination form in before the 24th of this month!

Interest Did you know... by Ollie Ogden-Barker The majority of months in a year follow a pattern of 31 days followed by 30 days, except for one month in particular. This month is of course February, the second month of the year, the month with everybody’s favourite: Valentine’s day! It was even the month when British currency changed and became decimal in 1971, getting rid of half -crowns and -pennies. Even so it is the only month to have only 28 days. Why, I ask? The majority of modern culture can trace their roots back to some part of the Roman Empire and the calendar is no different. The original Roman calendar had ten months: Martius - 31 Days; Aprilis - 30 Days; Maius - 31 Days; Iunius - 30 Days; Quintilis - 31 Days; Sextilis - 30 Days; September - 30 Days; October - 31 Days; November - 30 Days; and December - 30 Days for a total of 304 days. Obviously, this created problems as 61 days are unaccounted for. Two more months January (Ianuarius) and February (Februarius) were added to the end of the year to cover winter; involving a reshuffling of the days in each month. This increased the length of the year to 355 days and then Ianuarius and Februarius were moved to the start of the year. This is the first calendar to introduce a leap year to bring the calendar in line with the seasons. At the end of February (which at the time was February 24) an "intercalculary month" was added. Needless to say this caused yet more problems!

9

Interest Despite all of these changes, the Roman calendar was still flawed. Due to the still missing days, the calendar became out of sync with the seasons every few years. Also, the romans have very distinct naming patterns and the months of Quintilis and Sextilis no longer flowed with the pattern. Quintilis was renamed July, after Julius Ceasar and Sextilis was renamed August, after his nephew Augustus (Debatably one of the greatest Roman rulers and the founder of the Roman Empire). The Julian Calendar was then introduced as a move to correct this. The total length of the Julian Calendar was 365.25 days long (how is .25 days even possible?). This increase was achieved by adding two extra days to the end of January, August, and December and one extra day to the end of April, June, September and November. Notice how the first set is all of the months with 31 days and the second set are all the months with 30 days. This was also the stage when the "intercalculary month" was removed. With the Julian calendar, we can see the modern calendar http://oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/media/oaad8/ fullsize/e/ear/earth/earth_seasons.jpg beginning to take shape. Problems with the Julian Calendar occurred one day every 128 years. This led to complications again with the seasons; which were not fixed until (at the earliest) 1582 with the Gregorian calendar. This major change was to compensate for the equinoxes. Several days were also dropped. Other changes included strict rules on what defined a leap year. Interestingly it is not always every 4 years. The equations used to determine when a leap year are: 1.

The year is evenly divisible by 4;

2.

If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless;

3.

The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

Hope this gives you an insight into why February only has 28 days. It’s hard to put over 2000 years of history into one article so for further reading go to: http:// www.timeanddate.com. Got an interesting fact our readers should know? Tweet us @iAstonMagazine

Music

Haim Gig Review by Joy Warmann In December, I was lucky enough to get a ticket to see Haim for free, and who am I to pass up free good music?! The gig was at Birmingham Institute - I hadn't been to a gig at this venue prior to this, so it was nice to find a new music venue; especially one that I think I'll be visiting a lot in the future. There was only one support act for the night, and who else but Saint Raymond?! I’ve been raving about him for a while and it was actually my first time seeing him live. He was everything that I expected him to be and more. He absolutely slayed the set. Opened with a single from the EP Escapade called "Letting Go" and from then on it was hit after hit. He went through other singles like "Bonfires", "Young Blood" and "Everything She Wants". The crowd (especially two young girls at the front) ate him up. Also, the guitar riffs on his songs are contagious! I came back humming one of the riffs even after Haim's set. No idea how this guy is only 18 but he is killing it, more power to him! Haim had a slightly unexpected yet highly entertaining pre-set song list. Dominated mainly by Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z which had me bobbing my head and singing/rapping the entire time - there was quite a bit of crowd participation when Timberlake’s "Señorita" played which was nice, but putting aside the pre-show entertainment... Haim. The sisters stepped on stage, the crowd grew wild as they opened up with a recent single of theirs - "Falling". Danielle might have had a sore throat as she only sang one song in the set whilst Este and Alana took the reins on the others. However, she didn't let this stop her from being the ultimate front woman. She nailed every single guitar solo and at the risk of sounding cheesy, she rocked. They played through quite a short setlist but they played each song with what felt like all of their might and the crowd responded identically - throwing their bodies about and chanting the words back at the band. The show was a banter-filled party from beginning to end. Some highlights were "Don't Save Me", "Oh Well (Fleetwood Mac Cover)", when Este ate a Percy Pig sweet that somebody had thrown on stage, "Forever", "My Song 5" and finally their drum solo finale. Even though it was my third time seeing them, this felt like a whole new band entirely. Best performance I've seen of theirs to date!

Seasonal

F lip p in g G o o d tim e ! by Olivia Springate Pancake day is almost here and whether or not you celebrate it, it’s the perfect time to indulge in a yummy treat. Creating the perfect pancake may seem tough, but I promise it’s as easy an anything. Check out my efforts! Ingredients 225g plain/all-‐purpose flour Pinch salt 2 eggs 600ml milk 2 tsp melted butter plus extra melted butter for cooking Directions 1. Start off by sifting the flour into a mixing bowl and add the salt. Then add the two eggs and mix until smooth (you can use a whisk or a fork). 2. Add the milk and 2 tsp of butter and beat that in well. Your batter should be a smooth pouring consistency. You will need to leave it for about half an hour for the gluten to take action. 3. Place the pan on the hob at high heat. Add a little bit of butter to lightly grease the pan, but make sure the butter doesn’t burn. 4. Quickly add a few tablespoons of batter, depending on the thickness you want; tilt the pan to spread the mixture evenly and cook until golden brown. 5. Use either a spatula or flipping the pancake to turn the pancake over and cook the other side. (How NOT to do it: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=GSnYcrXq-‐2A) 6. Serve by slipping the pancake straight onto a plate. 7. Top in any way you like! Some traditional toppings include sugar, lemon juice and even chocolate...
