1963 Chervolet Corvette Sting Ray Split Window
Inspiration for the car’s styling came from the shortfin mako shark which was mounted in miniature in Bill Mitchell’s office. He was the head of GM Design and had concept cars designed by Larry Shinoda that became the XP-720 4-Seater and XP-755 Mako Shark. These provided a basis for the C2 corvette which was named the Sting Ray. With incredible style, brute power and a well appointed interior with power everything the Sting Ray was an instant success. It had a base price of $4,037 USD for the convertible and $4,257 for the coupe. Initial sales were tremendous and the St. Louis factory couldn’t keep up with demand. Production for 1963 alone was up 50 percent from the previous year at almost 22,000 units. The use of fibreglass made the Corvette the car of the future.

It’s hard to imagine, but cars as a mode of transportation have been around for almost 140 years. Cars came to be in the late 19th century. But the first cars were slow, funny vehicles with diminutive engines, yet big potential. Over the years, cars evolved from toys of the rich to an obligatory possession of the common man. The automobile shaped the world. It also changed the urban landscape and the vision of transport forever. Cars brought the freedom and ability to move fast and independently, influencing modern culture and the way of living. It’s easy to understand why the automobile is one of the most important inventions in the history of the world. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that cars evolved into the advanced, modern machines drivers use today. To learn more about them, here is a list of the top 20 cars of the 20th century. They defined 100 years of automobiles between 1900 and 2000. To be continued next month. Jeep Willys Jeep began production of the original Willys in 1942 as the U.S. was entering the war. Production ended in 1946 after they built more than 600,000, exporting them to all parts of the world. Also called the Willys MB or Ford GPW, it was a simple machine, yet incredibly tough and dependable. It came with a diminutive 2.2-liter four-cylinder with 60 HP. It also used a simple four-wheel drive layout, which was an innovative concept for the 1940’s. They are currently the biggest and most legendary producer of off-road vehicles and SUVs.
Austin Mini When they first introduced it in the late ’50s, the Mini featured the unusual concept of a transversely mounted engine with front-wheel drive. This set up was something no one else had in those days. The Mini was the champion of usability because it looked tiny from the outside, yet it could sit five people on the inside. Even though it produced just 34 HP from the factory, the Mini won some of the world’s most prestigious races like the Rally Monte Carlo. The Mini is a technological marvel, as well as an immensely capable little car. It motorized Great Britain and influenced every car maker since. Ford Model T There are not enough words to describe the importance of the Ford Model T in automotive history and car culture. The Model T singlehandedly created the car world in 1908. It was the first mass-produced automobile with Ford making over 15 million until 1927. It also created the foundation for the modern car industry with assembly plants in foreign countries. Also, the Ford Model T was the first car they produced in numerous versions. In fact, Ford designed it so people could easily transform it into a truck, agricultural machine or a military vehicle. It launched the Ford Motor Company, which became the biggest car manufacturer in the world at one point. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Chevrolet introduced the second generation of the Corvette in 1963, 10 years after the original Corvette. With a new platform, engine and body, as well as independent rear suspension, the 1963 Corvette was one of the best-looking cars of the ’60s. The Stingray marked the introduction of the Corvette as a world-class sports car. It also put American performance vehicles on the map, establishing the legend of Chevrolet sports cars. The Corvette Stingray got its name from GM’s 1961 Stingray concept and its resemblance to a stingray shark. Porsche 911 The Porsche 911 is one of the most interesting models in car history, as well as a success story for over 50 years. The story of the 911 is the constant effort, development and painstaking work to perfect a concept that struggled at the beginning. The key word in the 911 universe is “development,” since they developed the Porsche 911 using the Porsche 356 model. Porsche invested an unbelievable amount of time and effort in perfecting this model. Today, over 50 years later, the 911 is the best overall sports car in the world. They sold over one million of them. It was also a benchmark model in terms of performance and handling.

New Safety Features In Your Vehicle
Not even a week ago, Volvo announced it would integrate cameras into the cabins of its vehicles to monitor potential driver distraction and intoxication. That news came not long after the Swedish carmaker said it would limit its cars to a top speed of 112 miles per hour. The European Commission has gone beyond both of those measures, passing long-debated legislation that will make nine driver safety systems required fitment on new all cars from 2024. The list includes features that either come standard or as part of optional packages, like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, reversing cameras or detectors, and driver drowsiness and attention monitors. Others items would be brand new. Carmakers will need to design steering columns with a standardized interface to fit alcohol interlocks. The emergency stop signal, already in use in other markets and occasionally seen here, flashes the brake lights and hazards when the car detects an emergency stop. An accident data recorder, like an airline's black box, would keep tabs on certain vehicle parameters to aid in accident reconstruction and, we imagine, insurance industry details. Closed-loop data recorders would overwrite material at a fixed time interval, and anonymize the driver and vehicle data. In the legislation, the EU Commission made sure to specify that carmakers "ensure that these systems and features are developed in such a way so as to ensure that users accept them. " The European Parliament and EU member states will vote to formalize the measure in September. Assuming that happens, if a car isn't on the market right now and hasn't been designed yet, that car would need include the range of equipment in 2022. Cars currently on the market have until 2024 to comply.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH F1 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2019: Valtteri Bottas takes crushing Australian GP win, leads Mercedes 1-2. After qualifying second behind Hamilton on Saturday, Bottas managed to seize the lead on the run down to Turn 1 on the opening lap as he slipped up the inside of his Mercedes teammate, comfortably taking the position. Bottas never looked at risk of losing the race from that point on, building a healthy buffer through his long opening stint before emerging from the pits over 10 seconds clear of Hamilton, with the gap swelling through the second half of the race. Bottas managed ease to his first win since the 2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by 20 seconds, going down as the largest victory margin of his F1 career to date. The Finn also picked up a bonus point for setting the fastest lap of the race. Unable to keep up with his teammate, Hamilton was left to settle for second place after fending off Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who picked his way up to P3 in the team's first race with new power unit partner Honda. It marked Honda's first podium finish in F1 since the 2008 British Grand Prix. Verstappen opted for a long first stint to get fresher tyres for the second half of the race, allowing him to close up and easily pass Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, whose pace dropped off dramatically in the closing stages Vettel had been running 12 seconds clear of Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc at one stage, but the pair were split by only one second at the chequered flag More concerning for Ferrari was the 57-second gap to race winner Bottas, marking a difficult day for the team widely tipped as the favourite in Melbourne. Kevin Magnussen topped the midfield fight for Haas in sixth place, but echoes of 2018 rang true for the team as Romain Grosjean was forced to retire midway through the race due to an issue fitting his front-left tyre, having been in contention for a strong points finish. Nico Hulkenberg clinched seventh for Renault, fighting up from 11th on the grid, while Kimi Raikkonen made a points-scoring debut for Alfa Romeo as he took eighth place. Daniel Ricciardo's rotten record in his home grand prix continued as he was forced to end his Renault debut early due to damage to his car. Ricciardo lost his front wing and sustained damage to his bargeboard mere seconds into the race after running over the grass, forcing him into an early stop. The Australian was one lap down on the leader after 18 laps, and was ultimately parked by Renault as a precaution just past half-distance. F1:Bahrain Grand Prix Hamilton sweeps up win as Leclerc suffers engine blow. Lewis Hamilton has claimed an unlikely victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix after long-time leader Charles Leclerc suffered an engine issue in the closing stages to deny him his first Formula 1 race win. Leclerc recovered from a slow start to power into the lead ahead of Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel, who later spun off battling Hamilton and lost his frontwing as well.But with 10 laps to go Leclerc sadly lost energy recovery in his power unit to leave him limping to the finish line. The 21-year-old couldn’t prevent Hamilton from charging past, losing five seconds per lap, before Valtteri Bottas secured a Mercedes 1-2 by getting past just two laps before a late safety car triggered by two sudden Renault failures for Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo in separate incidents. Leclerc did gain a small slice of good fortune as the safety car period signalled the end of the race to see him stay clear of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for his maiden F1 podium. With Verstappen in fourth place, Vettel recovered from his spin to climb to fifth place ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris who claimed points in his second F1 Grand Prix.

Argentina GP: Marquez romps to dominant victory: Marc Marquez scorched to his first MotoGP win of 2019 in the Argentina Grand Prix, beating runner-up Valentino Rossi by a commanding margin of almost 10 seconds. Honda rider Marquez made the perfect launch from pole position to make a break at the start, opening up a one-second lead over a similarly fast-starting Valentino Rossi on the first tour. The reigning champion then began to set a fearsome pace that none of his rivals could match, stretching his advantage to three seconds after three laps. After 10 of 25 laps, Marquez was a full seven seconds in the clear, and his lead peaked at more than 12 seconds in the latter stages before he finally crossed the line with 9.8s in his pocket for his third win at Termas de Rio Hondo. Behind, the battle for second was fought largely between Rossi and Dovizioso, with Yamaha rider Rossi recovering from running wide at Turn 5 on lap seven to retake the place the following tour. Dovizioso found a way back by his countryman on lap 13, but was unable to escape Rossi, who dived back past the Italian at Turn 7 on the final lap to come home second. A frenetic scrap for fourth place went the way of Jack Miller, after the Pramac Ducati rider made late passes on Alex Rins - up from 16th on the grid - and the second works Ducati of Danilo Petrucci. Rossi's teammate Maverick Vinales made a poor start from second on the grid to drop to fourth on the opening lap, and then slumped to eighth on lap two. The Spaniard looked set to take seventh place before being taken out by the Petronas SRT Yamaha of Franco Morbidelli on the last lap at Turn 7. That accident promoted Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) to seventh ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Petronas), Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) and Pol Espargaro (KTM). Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) blew a strong chance to be part of the podium fight with a jump-start, earning himself a ride-through penalty that left him down in 13th. Both Avintia Ducatis of Tito Rabat and Karel Abraham crashed out, while Suzuki's Joan Mir retired in the pits after a lurid grass-tracking moment late in the race. JAGUARS VISIT POTTERY VILLAGE The Jaguar Enthusiast Club of the Costa Blanca region held their march meeting by visiting the pottery village of Agost in the province of Alicante . Members met for coffee at Torrellano before proceeding on their 26 km run together for a pre-arranged visit to Alfarería pottery where a live demonstration of skillful pottery making was watched by members ,while their big cats lined the street in a display of jaguar splendor. Lunch had been arranged at the restaurant Don Camillo where 50 members relaxed on the sunny terrace with a refreshment prior to sitting down to eat a superb meal of four courses .
