BACHELORS OF ARCHITECTURE
2019-2023
IAN GREEN
Ian Green Architecture Student
My name is Ian Green. I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Washington. I plan to apply to the masters of architecture program in 2023. I have a wide eclectic range of intrests in the design program; anything from paremetric, metabolism, severe climate, or even tiny home design.
I hope to one day open an architecture firm focusing on tiny homes which utilize passive energy consumption.

Nakagin Capsule Tower
“Issues in Sustainability”
The premise of this project was to take a Built Environment movement and render a unique design element that emulates the spirit of the Metabolism movement. In the Nakagin Capsule Tower, the design of the replaceable capsules provided a low cost home that could be mass produced and replaced if damaged. The Metabolism movement was a post-war movement that focused on futuristic development and renew ability.

The project holds a special place in my heart for design theory, as it was one of the first projects I worked on in architecture design school. The Nakagin Capsule Tower, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, was built in 1972. The building was unfortunately demolished last year in 2022.
Kurokawa designed the pod systems below for maximum efficiency, during the Metabolism Movement, only taking up 105 sq. ft. The tower consisted of 140 of these housing pods.

This was one of my favorite projects at UW during 2021. In this project I worked on creating a box. I decided to make a puzzle box with moving gears, doors, and locking pins.

Learning fabrication has been a very insightful process of design. I’ve learned that many concepts are lost after the initial planning phase once the actual fabrication process begins. Being able to design is one thing, but actually being able to build your design is another.

The Dewdropper’s Orchard comes from the slang of the 1920s. A Dewdropper is a man without a job who has become poor, while an Orchard is something that is exspensive.
