TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT

Opinion

The future belongs

to autonomous transportation

A

parade of convoys is entering the test phase. Platooning is the name given to the transport chain connected by an invisible rope. With this, freight transportation should become more efficient, and environmental friendlier. But what sense does publicity to hitching manoeuvres bring, if the loading space in the vehicle behind is filled with the sound of echo? If freight related documents are still sent via fax? And the corresponding administration is carried out manually? Gunnar Gburek, TimoCom's company spokesman, considers HGV robots and platooning as only a part of the transport chain. Stagnation occurs not on the road but behind the desk. "Anyone wishing for autonomous trucks to meet their expectations, must ensure that administration processes concerning transport orders are also autonomous", says Gburek. "Otherwise innovative technologies remain in the analogue era." From receipt of an order to invoicing: Gburek is convinced, that processes which continuously run on their own will put autonomous trucks onto the fast lane. At the same time the work of dispatchers and administrative staff is improved. "IT frees staff members from repetitive tasks and helps them get the most out of their job."

Transport order management costs can be reduced by one third TimoCom took yet another important step forward in the autonomous world in the past months. Users have recently been able to carry out their dealings digitally with the new application TC Transport Order. Anyone who allows the system to work for him, can reduce administration costs by at least a third, according to Gburek. And what does the future hold? From

24

IT

MANUFACTURING

&LOGISTICS

December 2017

Gburek's point of view, autonomous driving, next level, will form part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In this world, machines will recognise with which production quantity a transport order must be initiated. Bulk load pallets become intelligent load carriers, which report their total weight directly to the transport platform. Vehicles automatically dock at the roller doors of a transshipment centre with available loading capacity. Many technological innovations resulting from digitalisation are today a reality or in the trial phase. If logistics and road transport are sustainably optimised, many companies will have to change their way of thinking: "Networking lives from sharing data. Thus, many companies are still reluctant to data sharing, although they have long recognised the advantages of digitalisation", acknowledges Gburek. As an independent and neutral transport platform, TimoCom aims to pave the way for the digital transport era of its users -

including the increasingly more present industry and trade companies. Even today, the registered users are already autonomous – independent of the system in use, they can exchange data via the platform thanks to interfaces. Even order related chats are possible. The company size is of no significance to take part in the transport market opportunities. Where is the transport sector headed? One of the goals of autonomous transportation is to reduce the number of empty kilometres and increase efficiency in the transport environment. Not everything will change dramatically, assures Gburek: "Loading space remains loading space". The company's spokesman is convinced that HGV drivers will always be necessary and compares the situation with air freight: "A large part of what a pilot had to do 50 years ago is completely automated nowadays. Nonetheless, a pilot is still required."

Warehouse Management

Success story

Data delivers for ALSO Finland ‘Data science’ may not be a new idea in the world of corporate business. However, introducing this concept into the increasingly complex logistics landscape could prove transformative and hugely beneficial for warehouses and distribution centres globally.

T

he scale and complexity of the automated solutions being integrated into material handling operations continues to rise. However, incorporating new technology and assimilating it with existing work streams is not always a seamless process. This is where the intelligent use of data could provide the key to unlocking sustainable solutions and creating more effective operations. Through ‘process mining’ – a technique that allows for the automatic discovery and analysis of processes based on event logs – companies are better able to identify issues, isolate bottlenecks and generate improvements.

measured, Vanderlande was able to analyse it to identify the main inefficiencies within the workflow. This allowed the company’s process engineers to highlight key areas for improvement.

minor, low-cost adjustments to their working methods.”

Future potential

Seeking solutions This was certainly the case for Finnish IT product and services supplier, ALSO Finland. Following the development of a new facility equipped with Vanderlande’s ADAPTO warehousing solution, ALSO realised that it needed its system to deliver a greater capacity in order to meet the demands of its customers. By interfacing state-of-the-art process mining techniques with ADAPTO, Vanderlande’s process engineers worked closely together with ALSO to gather precise ‘real-time’ data from cartons and totes as they travelled through the system. This generated an accurate account of how the system was performing and the manner in which operators were interacting with it.

Delivering capacity Once all the data had been collated and 26

Recommendations incorporated a number of ‘quick wins’, including minor adjustments to the system’s thresholds, as well as modifications to the actions taken by operators. Subsequently, this helped ALSO to realise an increase in picking capacity of over 20% with minimal capital investment. “Through process mining, we almost always find opportunities for optimisation, which can be achieved without having to invest in a large-scale system transformation,” says Vanderlande’s Senior Process Engineer Erik Blokhuis. “Frequently we see that by changing the little things, we can achieve significant results. “This was the case when we undertook this joint project with ALSO. They didn’t need to make wholesale changes to the system or invest in additional technology in order to achieve the required capacity. The data gave us the insights that allowed ALSO to overcome many of their challenges through

When data is put to good use, process mining offers an excellent opportunity to facilitate continuous optimisation of business performance based on real information reporting and analysis. For companies such as Vanderlande, it represents a significant step forward in designing, installing, operating and optimising smart material handling solutions and processes that deliver value in an intelligent way. As process mining is less advanced in the logistics industry than the corporate business environment, Vanderlande is cooperating closely with Eindhoven University of Technology to further develop its application. The aim is to create process models that are specifically transferable to the logistics sector. An increasing number of companies are demonstrating that process mining can lead the way to smarter, cost-effective results. It seems there has never been a better time to put it at the forefront of service solutions.
