orbord Europe Ltd was presented with the ‘Best Overall Supplier 2017’ award by Jewson at Jewson Live in December, the UK’s biggest builders’ merchant show, “for ensuring the availability of its products across all our branches, despite difficult market conditions. On receiving the award, Jenny Stainton, Norbord’s Saint Gobain Key Account Manager, commented, “We are absolutely delighted to win the Jewson Supplier of the Year. This recognises all of the effort that Norbord Europe Ltd puts into the Jewson account throughout the year and it’s great to be recognised.

Norbord faced stiff competition to win the award as there are in total around 600 Jewson suppliers which receive votes from the Jewson network. Jenny went on to say “The award is voted for by the Jewson branch network across the UK, as well as the sales teams, the Category teams and the Jewson Executive team. This tells you that the branches appreciate the service they receive from all of the teams at Norbord – the BDM team and managers, internal customer support based at Head Office at Cowie and logistics to get our products to all of the branches. This is the third time in five years that ‘Supplier of the Year’ has been

ollowing on from an extremely successful 2017 for BA Components, they are continuing to bring an even bigger and better stand to the 2018 KBB Show from the 4th to the 7th March. After 7 industry award wins in 2017, it is safe to say that BA are pushing the boundaries in the world of KBB.

So what will BA have on offer at the much anticipated KBB show? “We will be showcasing all of our seven BA brands that will provide the innovation, inspiration and insight for all visitors at the ever evolving KBB Show. We want to attract new customers to inform them of our full portfolio and manufacturing capabilities, which we know, offers diversity, quality and value for money. It also gives us the opportunity to meet with existing customers face to face as most business is conducted online or by telephone. Over the past 18 months we have worked hard to develop and improve our product offerings and are

proud that these new product lines not only show innovation and style, but also maintain the BA brand heritage. By listening to our customers and adapting to their needs we both can look forward to a profitable year ahead. Emphasis will also be on the overall BA experience and we’ll be reinforcing why we’re one of the market leaders in our industry. We have a few surprises and we hope our stand will demonstrate what you can achieve by being part of BA Components,” said David Caulfield Sales & Marketing Director BA Components. Having launched their new kitchen and bedroom brochures in October 2017, BA will be bringing their stunning new range of colours to their KBB stand; Baltic Blue, Matt Denim, Natural Walnut and Tortona Natural Oak, Oriental Black and London Concrete. BA also recently launched two contrasting new door styles; the Aldridge & the Lazio. Having witnessed a 16% increase in Shaker style sales over the past two years, it made perfect sense to introduce a new shaker

style to the BA family. The Aldridge is a traditional take on the standard Shaker door but with some subtle design differences that make it unique to the collection and already, since the launch of this door style in October, sales have rocketed. The Lazio door is a very modern style door with an integrated handle supplied to fit perfectly into a pre-routered ‘slot’ in the door face. The shape and styling around the handle make this door simply stand out from its peers. There are four handle finishes offered with Lazio in Copper, White, Graphite and Chrome which when fitted offer a seamless perfect fit and finish to this truly stunning door. Drop by stand 090 and explore everything BA has to offer in 2018. You can find out more by visiting www.kbb.co.uk

P

luss, one of the largest national disability employers within the UK, have hitherto specialised in bed frame production at their Barnstaple premises but are now expanding their activities to incorporate the supply of quality panel work for the fitting out of a high profile hotel chain. This work requires Pluss to provide CNC machined panels as well as rapid production of top quality edge banding. Bearing in mind the success of the Salvador crosscutting systems recently supplied by Daltons Wadkin the company had no hesitation in approaching Sales Director Andy Walsh once again, and after

visits to the company’s Nottingham showroom to evaluate the equipment on offer a CEHISA Pro-12 edge bander and a Kimla BPF2131 3-axis CNC router were selected. Daltons Wadkin provided working demonstrations on both machines in order to give Pluss the reassurance that their investment would meet all their needs. The Pro-12 is one of the most popular models in the CEHISA range and aimed at larger volume panel processors, incorporating DUO-MELT glue unit for working with PUR and EVA adhesives, pre-milling, twin station corner rounding units, radius

scrapers, glue scrapers, buffing unit, and automatic head positioning, all controlled from an intuitive touch screen control. The Kimla BPF2131 3 axis CNC is a large format nesting router. The heavy duty construction, high speed precision machining and included nesting software make it ideal for working on a range of materials where efficiency and versatility is key. Both machines were delivered, installed and commissioned at the Pluss factory in Barnstaple and Enterprise Manager (Manufacturing) David Jenkins is delighted with this further purchase, “Daltons Wadkin have once again risen to the occasion, their care and attention to detail throughout the whole transaction being second to none. We are already seeing the benefits derived from these two machines which when added to the vastly speeded up crosscutting performance provided by the two Salvadors has raised our production facility to an entirely new level.” Andy Walsh said, “We now have four machines operating continually at the Pluss factory and are delighted once again to have made a significant contribution to the performance of their manufacturing processes.” For further information: Tel: 0115 986 5201 Email: info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

E

stablished in 1969 by John Brunton, Brunton Joinery is a traditional joinery company, priding itself in the manufacture of quality, bespoke bedroom furniture as well as doors and windows. John’s son, Stephen who now runs the company explained, “We had a contract to supply MDF desk tops, which we produced using a template for hand routing and then also finishing by hand. It used to take us 2 weeks to manufacture around 84 desk tops, so we decided to buy the Rover K CNC machine to help to automate the process.” “The change has been amazing. We now produce those same desk tops in just 3 days. We’ve also found that using high quality diamond tools has reduced the finishing time by 50%, so just on that product alone, it’s been a great success.” However, the main benefit for the company was still to come. Stephen continued, “We’ve previously

made a few door sets, again mainly by hand and we won a contract to supply a major building contractor. We couldn’t have met the timescales without the Rover K. For example, it used to take about 22 minutes to chisel out a mortice lock. It now takes 2 minutes and 14 seconds to machine out the lock and hinges!” “We’ve now won additional contracts to supply door sets in the new build market, for the domestic housing, commercial property and education sectors and the Rover K will pay for itself within the first year, which is a remarkable achievement.” Stephen’s son Nicky, who’s now responsible for this side of the business explained, “it was a massive leap of faith for us, but our business needed to progress and the Rover K has given us the speed, accuracy and consistency which is required to win these major contracts.” “We chose Biesse due to their reputation for precision and reliability. We purchased the machine through Maginn Machinery, who we’ve worked with for over 40 years and they helped us to spec the machine properly.” “For instance, we included the option of ‘set-up assist’, which saves us a lot of time and is much safer as you can’t put the pods in the wrong place.”

T

he trio had a very clear vision of what they wanted to create with the company. From day one, they laid out a set of principles that has helped guide the business from a standing start to a £14 million turnover in less than seven years, despite a recession.

Forza Doors specialises in the preparation of wood veneers and timber utilised in the production of doors, frames, panels and associated joinery for use in the commercial interior construction market; this encompasses office, education, health, hotel and retail. The company is dedicated to providing its clients with a superior range of veneer or laminate doors and panels, as managing director Nick Hare explains: “Our mission has always been to deliver a first class service that can meet demanding project lead times. We recognise that site events can compress the completion schedule, therefore it is crucial that we are able to meet such fast track requirements. “A key element of our service is the

10

provision of totally bespoke handcrafted veneers with a 21st century CNC machined door or panel which guarantees consistent dimensional accuracy. This is fundamental in giving clients the confidence to specify and use Forza products within their projects.”

HOMAG machinery helps deliver quality and consistency Alan Brown, sales director at Forza Doors, underlines why the right machinery and software are so important: “When you’re a young growing business, you have to be able to deliver consistently excellent products to tight deadlines. The commercial fit-out market is very ‘lastminute.com’. It is driven by a lack of detailed information which exerts more pressure on us, as the manufacturer, to meet the really challenging timeframes that are put in place by our clients. This is not going to change and so for us, a machine breakdown can be very disruptive. “That is why we made the business decision to migrate to all HOMAG equipment. We’re not quite there yet, but at

least 80% of our machinery comes from the HOMAG Group. It includes a beam saw, edgebanders, sanders, CNC 5-axis routers and a roller coating line. To run these machines we use the market-leading woodWOP 7 software, as we believe it is the best solution in the market. “From day one, we have invested in HOMAG machines because the Germans

give you exactly what you specify, unlike the sometimes wing and a prayer approach of other manufacturers. With HOMAG, there is an unparalleled level of build quality and robustness that you cannot get anywhere else. “Yes, they tend to be more expensive than some of the other options, but you’re buying the best. So HOMAG not only gives you technically advanced solutions, but also complete peace of mind. This is further enhanced by the superb service back-up which includes online support via the internet with Germany. “This service is second to none and nine times out of ten we can solve any issues without the need to call out an engineer. On the odd occasion we do have a HOMAG engineer onsite, you know they will arrive promptly and get you up and running again as fast as possible. They are always very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.”

Operating across two sites “The company’s rapid expansion has thrown up some interesting challenges,” claims Forza’s technical director, Philip Duckworth. He continues, “We now have 120 staff operating across two sites, giving us around 40,000 sq ft of production space. Whilst these sites are close to each other, it is vital we have good communication between the two. “All the new HOMAG machinery features the powerTouch control screen which is an excellent tool. Being a touch screen system, rather than a keyboard and mouse, it gives you fast and easy accessibility to diagnostics. “The operators can receive emails from the office or each other on screen. If a guy in plant A has a problem on his machine he can email his colleague in plant B on a similar machine and sort the problem. Without this communication ability, he would have to walk over to the other factory to see the guy and discuss a way of solving the issue.”

Homag BMG511 – production doubled with improved accuracy at Forza Doors

High-end commercial door market “Our customers are in the high-end commercial door market where a suite of doors in an office is, to a certain extent, a piece of furniture. We don’t stock anything in standard sizes, every order that goes through our production is bespoke and we handle a high volume of orders every day. “Consequently, it is vital that our woodworking machinery can handle everything from batch one upwards. We have found that the HOMAG equipment is more than up to the job. The quality of finished work pieces is outstanding and all the machines consistently perform at an exceptional level. “We specified our HOLZMA beam saw with an optimisation package so that for each piece cut it generates a series of labels for the manufacturing stations further down the production line. The saw is used to cut fire door cores 44mm to 69mm thick and for heavy, 45mm thick, MDF cutting which we double stack. This has doubled our throughput by cutting two for one. “Previously, our timber partition system required the hardwood edges to be applied by hand and that was very time and labour intensive. To overcome this, we ordered a specially built edgebander from HOMAG which runs at 16 metres per minute and handles door edges as well. The machine copes with 10mm and 18mm hardwood lipping to a depth of 80mm and has revolutionised this area of our production process. “The investment in a HOMAG 5-axis CNC machine was made to cut down on time

spent on tool changes when milling doors for ironmongery. It used to take us at least 15 minutes to process a door; now it’s down to six and a half minutes which is more than twice as quick as before and yet the accuracy has improved too.”

A company you can trust Managing director Nick Hare is very complimentary about the HOMAG UK team: “We’ve known Roger Wilks, one of HOMAG’s area sales managers, for more than 25 years. He is very good; we trust him, he comes from a manufacturing background so he knows his onions when it comes to talking about machines. “Roger never fails to impress us with his unbiased and honest approach. He tells it like it is, so you know he won’t try and pull the wool over your eyes. In fact, that’s a trait of all the team at HOMAG UK, they always look to give you the best solution for your business. “The people at the top of the company are always willing to spend time with us. When it comes to finance, they’ve helped us out with great deals from HOMAG Finance using Deutsche Leasing. The interest rate is amongst the best you can get in the country; I think that is because Deutsche appreciates the quality of the machines and that, consequently, they have high residual values. “There is no doubt that HOMAG has been very supportive and helpful throughout our period of rapid growth and we really appreciate this caring attitude,” concludes a buoyant Nick Hare. 08%C)A6=B?C(1@B?;C-8A697 +@4<4BC0>=8C-6339>B? <?=@B?;8>3; Leading supplier of high-performance CNC routing, engraving and cutting systems to the industrial woodworking, furniture manufacturing, joinery and panel processing industries, AXYZ International examines the respective roles of machine suppliers and owners of routing systems and the need to build effective business partnerships for the benefit of these industries.

T

he business of companies serving these industries has evolved to the point where traditional supplier relationships are deemed not only to be inadequate but also likely to be detrimental to a router owner’s business and profitability. Until fairly recently, most companies in these industries expected the supplier of CNC machinery to first provide the equipment and then the necessary ongoing technical support. However, this expectation has not always been met, with companies purchasing so-called ‘off-theshelf’ CNC routers having to rely on thirdparty support for necessary maintenance, repairs and spare parts. The potential for financial loss is very real if this support is not available in the event of a machine malfunction or total breakdown.

For a machine supplier to be considered by its customers as a full business partner, it is necessary to transcend the traditional perception of a customer’s requirements and develop a much broader understanding of these and the longer-term objectives. Ideally, the supplier should have direct involvement at the outset with a customer’s decision-making procedures in order to make the partnership work efficiently. The role of the CNC machine supplier can be equated to the wider aspirations of companies in the industries mentioned. Traditional manual methods of

12

manufacturing that were both timeconsuming and costly have all but been replaced with the emergence of CNC machinery generally and of routers in particular. The trailblazer for this evolution in CNC routing technology has been the development of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software and toolpath software in particular that can control routing/cutting tools with a level of precision that conventional manual processes, regardless of how proficient, would be unable to match. As CNC machining technology continues to advance, suppliers can now offer a host of production-enhancing accessories such as multiple spindles, drill blanks and automatic tool change (ATC) systems. In consequence, owners of routers in small- to medium-sized businesses can now enjoy the luxury of customised machines that hitherto were available for and made financially possible by much larger companies. This has enabled these smaller companies to tender for and secure work that was previously the exclusive domain of these larger companies. With the current level of increased competition, companies can no longer be content with a supplier merely providing the equipment which is adequate to meet perceived production requirements but which is subsequently found to have little or no technical support and product training.

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

As a consequence, there is a need for suppliers to adopt a collaborative approach with their business partners in order to guarantee a successful return on investment (ROI). There is simply too much at stake in the context of business growth and prosperity. Evolving technologies have led to a corresponding change in the role of the machine supplier, as it is important for CNC machine owners to consider both current and future needs prior to the purchase of a machine. For business partnerships to succeed, the supplier needs to understand the frequently complex challenges encountered by its machine-owning customers. The foundation of this understanding will be a strong familiarity with a customer’s manufacturing processes and how these are controlled. The loss of manufacturing control when third-party outsourcing is employed can impact heavily on financial resources, although time remains the main issue. Understandably, a customer would be anxious about the potential loss of revenue for every day a project could be delayed by third-party involvement. A business could encounter difficulties when it has a commitment to time-sensitive projects and then fails to deliver within the designated time frame due to the use of third-party outsourcing and this dependency is something of a ‘wild card’ in the entire process.

AXYZ

Profile

Technical support is a major consideration for CNC machine owners

Most suppliers and end-users of CNC machine technology recognise the need for product training prior to, during and after installation of the equipment. Every machine owner needs to make provision for changes in employees and the need to train new employees and suppliers must enable this to happen via ongoing training support. Furthermore, changes on the part of machine owners in their manufacturing processes can be made more challenging if this ongoing training is not available. These changes do not have to be disruptive if the right training programme is in place at the outset. Furthermore, as technical support is a major consideration for CNC machine owners, particularly in relation to machine maintenance, remote diagnostics should

always be made available by the supplier. Customers also need to review a supplier’s service record, expertise and reliability as part of their ‘due diligence’ research procedures prior to purchase of a machine. Such support should not end after initial training and machine installation. A machine owner’s current and predicted future objectives can change, at which time machine upgrades and new training may be required and provision must be made for this eventuality. An effective business partnership between a supplier and its customers is integral to the success of both. It is incumbent on the part of a supplier to provide guidance to customers in order to effectively meet new challenges and this is the essence of any business partnership.

have been developed with these neutral on-trend decors in mind – with harmonising blue tones and woodgrains an increasingly popular combination. “Blue works really well when used as an accent with authentic and natural-looking woodgrains – an area in which EGGER has long been an industry leader,” added Elliott. “And unlike many other solid colour accents, which are more trend-orientated, blues have longevity – as they are a little more subtle and tend to complement other parts of the design.” For further information: Tel: 01434 613359 www.egger.com New three-layer edging completes the solid wood look copy

boards, worktops and hardwearing laminate. Matching edging, including a new three-layer edging, completes the authentic solid wood appearance.

Since the introduction of these realistic Feelwood decors – with the market’s most authentic, deeply-textured synchronised finish – demand has soared in the furniture and interiors sector for a product with the characteristic knots and cracks of real wood.

Available in 22 decors across six different structures (ST), Feelwood allows the development of a higher-value range or new pieces of furniture with an authentic look and feel. In the UK, manufacturers can choose from ST27, ST28, ST29, ST36, ST37 and ST38 – they all have different woodgrain characteristics bringing choice and flexibility to any project.

With a high-quality finish that looks and feels even closer to the original, EGGER’s Feelwood textures represent a revolutionary development in the area of wood-based materials. The texture is synchronised with the decor image and provides wood reproductions with an authentic touch. As a result, the finished material is nearly indistinguishable from solid wood. However, the reproductions are a moredurable alternative to the real thing, with advantages such as a longer service life, easy care, and greater fade-resistance. Feelwood is available on chipboard and MDF boards, on EUROLIGHT lightweight

From a trend point of view, neutral decors such as white, blue and grey – in both cool or warmer tones – are becoming a dominant force in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and furniture sector. And it is here that EGGER’s supersmooth PerfectSense Matt and PerfectSense Gloss MDF boards also come into their own, both as an accent or for frontals. A Topmatt laminate can then provide an even tougher, matching surface for horizontal applications such as tables, work surfaces and shelving. Many of EGGER’s new Feelwood finishes

anson & Beards manufacture everything in house from raw materials but with two tired, old 3-axis CNC machining centres that were a bit slow and not as accurate as they used to be, they identified that it was time to look at more modern 5-axis CNC machining centres to improve productivity as well as the quality of machining and gain a much higher accuracy. Owner, Adrian Hanson said “we attended the W16 woodworking show and had a look at all the machines that were available. We wanted two machines and we needed them to be relatively compact but we really needed a quality machine that could cope with 2 shifts as we normally are running 20 hours

a day here.” Going on to say “FELDER had a very attractive stand, we spoke with them, got on really well and liked the look of the product. From there we were invited to the showroom, which has a great step up with live demonstrations going on.” In December 2016 they purchased two profit H350 CNC machining centres from FELDER GROUP’s FORMAT-4 range, Adrian commented “not only did the product appeal to us so did the service, back up and the warranty, It was all exactly what we were looking for! The 5-axis machine added the flexibility that a 5-axis machine brings but it also reduced our production times and even though the H350 has a small footprint it is still a very

heavy duty machine. Since the machines have gone in CNC machining is no longer an issue for us and we have increased our productivity massively. CNC machining used to be the big bottle neck in our factory, issues on the old machines meant that pieces had to be re-machined, that has been eradicated now and we get the right product off the machine first time! Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

With the aim of creating a more intuitive, easier and faster way to control industrial robots, Comau releases PickAPP, an Android application to perform “Pick and Place operations in a completely new way. Until now, robot programmers were skilled technicians who used a teach pendant device (robot remote control) to interact with the robot. Comau reverses this scenario with this “ease of use new APP which improves the customer experience. PickAPP is an Android application for an 8-10-inch tablet, configured with graphical operations which drastically improve the overall user experience. Thanks to this application, anyone familiar with

smartphones will t h ill be b able bl to t move a robot b t and create a pick and place process simply preparing a list of waypoints, without having to learn robotic programming language. The user moves the robot manually by pulling and pushing robot joints, or using the interface in a similar way that is used for toy cars or drones. Additional configurations, like the type of movement and the actions related to a gripper, can be easily added. The application has been developed by multiple users with a different approach than the one usually used for standard industrial processes. A sample group of testers, ranging from expert technicians to young people who play games on a tablet, were able to perform the programming required for a Pick and Place process in just a few minutes without prior training. aurence McIntosh of Edinburgh has provided an excellent joinery and cabinet making service for 70 years. Throughout that time, the company has upheld the finest traditions of craftsmanship and exceptional service, catering for clients who appreciate exquisite quality and workmanship. As well as becoming a leading manufacturer of bespoke joinery and hand made furniture in Scotland, the company's service is now in demand throughout the UK and in Europe. The company's philosophy is based on four principals: quality, service, people and relationships. The quality of the company's product is reflected in the quality of its product. Projects described on the company's website, www.laurencemcintosh.co.uk, include The Scotch Whisky Experience; The Caledonian — A Waldorf Astoria Hotel; the Links House at Royal Dornoch; as well as a selection of projects in private homes. As part of this drive for quality, the company recently invested in a Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REdL wide-belt sander.

Managing director, David MacDonald said: “We needed enhanced quality and we were moving to a new workshop. We thought it was time to invest in a new piece of high quality equipment.” David explained that he researched the sander market while attending the W16 exhibition, and was impressed by the quality of the Kündig sander. “When I saw it at the show it was pretty clear to me that it stood out head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the competition. It was more expensive, but that wasn't the issue: it was the quality we were after. “And the depth of knowledge of the people selling it was second to none.” The in-depth investigation continued as David travelled with Carl O'Meara of Kündig Ltd to Switzerland to see the Kündig factory,

24

witnessing demonstrations. David says, “I think the quality of the pre-sale information was excellent. Going and visiting the factory was really vital. I spent a morning there and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.” The timing of the installation of the sander was designed to coincide with the move into the new refurbished factory. David is delighted with the quality of the sander: “It exceeded everything I expected before the exhibition.” David quotes the quality of the finish as the primary advantage, followed by improved efficiency. The sander is used for a wide variety of work: sanding hardwoods and veneer panels, preparing panels before they are veneered, for denibbing lacquered surfaces and finishing of veneered boards. David quotes the fact that the sanding heads move up and down rather than the table as one factor allowing a high degree of adjustment, “that allows you to be much more precise when sanding veneers”. Options selected include the structure brush, a common option on the continent but less common here. David comments, “The structure brush allows us to give a structured surface finish to the timber. We are one of the first in the UK to have it”; while Carl O'Meara of Kündig Ltd added, “This option is likely to become more popular in the UK as it helps create even

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

more surface finishes from a single machine.” David also selected the oblique sanding head, commenting “We find that they are very easy to use, quick to set up, not complicated in the slightest.” He added that the oblique sanding has produced a noticeable improvement in the quality of the finished work. Oblique sanding aims to eliminate the track marks that can appear over time even with the highest quality belts, when the belt is in line with the workpiece. Tiny flaws in the belt can mark the workpiece in the same way that flaws on the rollers of fax machines, for example, would be apparent in the printed page. By setting the sanding head at a slight angle to the direction of travel, the track marks are greatly eliminated and the quality of the finish, especially on delicate surfaces such as veneers and lacquers, is greatly enhanced. Asked if he would recommend the sander, David replied, “I would, yes, it’s proven to be a very successful asset to the production line. We have enjoyed the experience and Kündig have continued to support us with their knowledge. It will be a working relationship that we hope will grow.” For further information: Tel 0845 833 0565 Email sales@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

THE WORLD’S #1 WOODWORKING CAM SOFTWARE Alphacam Router is an easy-to-use CAD/CAM solution for manufacturers wanting fast, efficient toolpaths and the generation of reliable, machine ready CNC code.

www.alphacam.com

Software

Alphacam

56=A/<=>A@C5@7C B;=>@4 37<=B;C*@C5938<:</ ) The 2018 R1 release of Alphacam, from Vero Software, includes considerable enhancements to the automation and nesting functions. here is now the ability in Automation Manager to have a connection between ‘parentchild’ parts, as job files can now be added to another job file as a sub-component. This enhances the management of parts that should be manufactured in groups.

T

Also in Automation Manager, drawings and fittings can now be added to specified datum points. When processing a job the fittings will automatically be inserted at a pre-defined position, and can also be used in parametric drawings. Alphacam also contains a small sample library of fitting types.

The sub-components have similar properties to the main components, such as layer mapping, along with material and nesting properties. Alphacam Product Owner Felipe Ferrary says the subcomponents will be loaded automatically with the main ‘parent’ component.

He says this new item of functionality allows parametric or constrained parts that require inserted fittings to be easily created.

“When creating jobs, users can easily add files to a job, and as all sub-component parts will be loaded automatically it improves ease of use and productivity.

26

And there is a new option in Automation Manager to avoid machine table collisions, with the ability to check Z levels on toolpaths. The new Tolerance Collision Check can be selected from the Machine Table Collision Method drop-down list, and a Z-level tolerance and material Z0 specified...for example, at the top or

PANEL & JOINERY PRODUCTION – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018

bottom of the part. Users will be warned if any toolpaths cutting deeper than the material thickness plus the tolerance are detected. Another enhancement to the Automation Manager in Alphacam 2018 R1 is being able to preview job files and subcomponents without having to process the job, speeding up productivity. And users can also access 13 additional nesting extension options.

Alphacam

Nesting itself has an important new feature allowing the nesting engine to automatically use the best available userselected sheets. “Previously, the sheets would be used in the order picked, and therefore, the nest wasn’t always optimised for best sheet usage,” explains Felipe Ferrary. “But now, users can select multiple sheets, and the nesting function automatically picks the best combination, which can significantly reduce material usage. Following customer requests, the TimeStudy function has now been reinstated as a 64-bit Addin, giving users their total machining time in a few seconds without any special settings or configuring reports. TimeStudy is a quick and easy way to report machining time, taking into account the units, Machine Tool Rapid Rate, Tool Change Time, Part Load/Unload Time and efficiency rate. It also displays the time specified to each operation, as well as the total machining time. A new Geometry option creates the

minimum 3D bounding rectangle to enclose solids and surfaces. The box can be aligned using feature extraction settings, and also defined by material. And additional stock can be specified in any of the bounding box faces. The new function means users can easily define the minimum amount of material needed to machine a solid or surface, and define the work volume required. The Cylindrical Parallel strategy for 3D machining has been improved to give easier control over the start/end Angles and CW/CCW direction. The start angle can be less or greater than the end angle, and the CW checkbox now dynamically updates the on-screen cutting area, providing graphical feedback on the area to be cut, and the tool’s starting position. “This simplifies toolpath creation by letting the user specify any combination of angles, and gives an appropriate graphical feedback on the machining area.”

Software

Lathes Two items of enhanced functionality which are specifically for Alphacam’s Lathe module, are an update to machining dialogs, and new cycles added to C/L Drilling and Tapping. On the machining dialogs update, turning dialogs now use the new machining dialogs style. Following the improvement in the milling C-Axis machining dialogs, the turning dialogs have all been updated and modernised, containing images and tooltips, which improve ease of use. And with the C/L Drilling and Tapping, the commands have been combined and a new cycle added, for pecking, boring and chamfering. This brings the centre line drilling functionality close to matching the C-Y Axis drilling functions, and means all drilling options are available, which, before, could only be used in C-Axis and C/L drilling. V

ero Software has launched a powerful new direct modelling system to fill the gap between CAD and CAM, focusing on the specific needs of machinist programmers. As a stand-alone, optional application for its CAM portfolio, the newly-available Designer enables users to create new designs or modify existing geometry from third party CAD systems. John Buehler, from Vero Software, says Designer represents the CAD framework that will become the core modelling engine for all CAM applications. “It’s not dependent on having a series of parameters that drive it, or a feature tree. It provides a very quick, dynamic editing and modelling environment, where users simply sketch, drag, hold, push or twist, to create and modify models.” He says having this single and unified solution for solids-based designs gives Vero users the flexibility of receiving a CAD file from any source, for review or modification. “Some modellers do not maintain adequate tolerances, so the models will often require a degree of repair – or if they’ve only been roughly modelled there may be gaps in the geometry. Designer allows users to read the native CAD data… clean up any poor geometry, close the gaps, stitch it into a solid, and then make modifications that are important to the CAM process, such as the suppression of features, or the modification of draft angles. “Generally, those modifications do not impact on a part’s design or performance, but will make it more manufacturable.” While Designer operates separately from the CAM system, there are triggers within it which will launch CAM, and there is full associativity between the two. “From fixture design to quick and easy part modification, Designer is truly the right CAD for CAM, by providing a full set of tools to fill the gap between the two.”

28

Major M j Designer D i Features F t Direct Modelling. This frees the user from the constraints of a parametric modelling system. Rather than modifying a lengthy series of parameters to make a design change, desired shapes can be obtained by simply pushing, pulling and dragging the geometry. “These changes can be completely freeform, or driven by numeric increments and measurements taken from existing geometry,” says John Buehler. “It’s no longer necessary to know how the original model was constructed, and design changes aren’t constrained to the original methods of creation.” Import Model Healing. Small gaps between surfaces on imported models can be automatically healed, preventing the timeconsuming need to rebuild very small surface patches. Where surfaces are corrupt or missing, Designer automatically creates the edge curve geometry, making it easy to rebuild new faces. “And closing a surface model to produce a solid body eliminates construction problems later in the process.” Feature Suppression. “Incoming CAD data often includes geometry features that aren’t necessary for CAM, or won’t be created by the machining process.” John Buehler says while many post-machining processes are frequently represented on the model, and are important for CAD design as they will ultimately be needed in the final component, they can hinder CAM programming. “Designer simply removes them and can save them for later operations if required, with just a mouse click.” Model Simplification. As well as feature suppression, the geometry can also be simplified at various stages of the machining process. Removing portions of the model, such as intersecting features, speeds up machining and provides better results. Powerful Sketching. Designer’s sketch capabilities make it easy to create 2D shapes using freeform input, which interacts with surrounding geometry.

Geometry for Machining. Designer’s many geometry creation techniques are essential to the machinist for model preparation. “Hole capping is a good example of this,” he says. “It can be used to cap anything from a simple drilled hole, to a complex open cavity, with just a few mouse clicks. And an extensive range of curve creation routines vastly improves boundary formation. Working with 2D Data. After importing DXF and DXG files, existing 2D data can be transformed into a 3D model by reusing profiles from the original data, automatically creating sketch profile regions. Extensive Range of CAD Interfaces. Designer works with data from almost any CAD supplier. Skipping corrupt records while importing provides a strong platform to manage inconsistent data. “Very large files can be handled with ease, and companies working with complex designs will benefit from the simplicity with which their customer’s CAD data can be manipulated.” John Buehler concludes by saying that while many modelling systems try to do everything for everyone, Designer focuses on the needs of machinist programmers, providing specific CAD for CAM. waste at Anglia Vehicle Linings becomes part of a storage and feed loop for precision feeding of the new biomass boiler to generate ideal heating for the working environment.”

It all happens very quickly, according to Steve Matuska at Dustraction, and arises out of growing numbers of alternative van models, layouts and dimensions that now exist as fit-out combinations for automotive vending or food distribution platforms. “That plywood off-cuts make good fuel for biomass boilers comes as no great surprise,” says Steve Matuska at Dustraction. “As well as disposal of panel waste, heat generation for the factory environment is itself now an important part of the waste disposal chain; wood-based

digitised. “Then they are neatened up on the CAD system,” says David Byatt, CEO at Anglia Vehicle Linings; “It all takes about a day for the CAD to do the work and give us the cutting plan we need.”

With Dustraction cleaning up, custom fit-outs in hardboard and ply can now be made for new vans of all makes and sizes taking just about anything… to just about anyone… pretty well anywhere. A clean sweep, you might say.”

Dustraction piped up a new chipper plus the biomass boiler at Anglia and Steve Matuska put together a layout for siting the various machine elements. “I went to the suppliers of the cutting elements in the line,” he says, “and got the waste production estimates for a working layout on the factory floor; that included our threebag extractor unit located outside of the factory building.

From a woodwaste-dedicated storage skip outside the factory, woodwaste can now be re-introduced and precision fed to the new biomass boiler to generate ideal factory working conditions. At the moment woodwaste for fuel is burned on an as-needed basis and currently fuels around four and a half working days per week, generating ideal operating conditions for a work-force of 20. UK timber merchant has purchased several wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal bills. Harlow Bros is a family owned business with over 90 years’ experience in manufacturing and merchanting timber, engineered timber and manufactured buildings from its 13 locations across the UK. The business is committed to implementing best practice solutions and quality standards, including trying to cut carbon emissions, reduce waste to landfill and help preserve fossil fuels, so was interested in finding out more about how biomass heaters could benefit the business. Having initially reviewed the marketplace for wood waste heaters a number of years ago, the company decided to purchase a WT15 from Wood Waste Technology for one of its branches. Since then Harlow Bros has purchased 5 more wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology for additional branch locations. Group Health & Safety Manager for Harlow Bros, Ian Fuller explains: “We’ve found that the wood waste heaters are a great investment for our business. They’re fantastic for reducing our waste disposal bills, providing free heating from burning the timber waste and have come into their own by allowing us to stop using the expensive gas and electric heaters we had in the business. We’ll continue to work with Wood Waste Technology on future wood waste heater installations as the team are very helpful and knowledgeable, the service is superb and the products are reliable, easy-touse and very long-lasting. We’re proud that the wood waste heaters allow our business to reduce operational costs whilst lowering its carbon footprint.
