1 Washington School 2 Sunken Outdoor Gathering

Spring 2023 Professor Seung Ra, RA Despite the neglect and abandonment of the Booker T. Washington School, the core structure has persisted through the tests of time. The recent incentive to inhabit the site of the Washington school has presented the opportunity to restore the building and site in an adaptive reuse effort. The adaptive reuse design proposal for the school and site on the Washington School seeks to reflect the hardships that the building has endured and inspire education and design to return to the forgotten Washington School.

The Washington School Adaptive Reuse project seeks to renew the powerful statement for adaptive reuse by using glass and steel to support and express the original brick facades at the Booker T. Washington School. The design proposal is an echo of the testament to the dedication and tenacity of Black Stillwater residents in attaining equal social and educational opportunities. As one approaches the site from the parking lot, a framed view of the original brick facade and new glass atrium case enclosure is presented to the viewer between two curved L-shaped outdoor gallery spaces and three curved reflecting pools. A stark contrast of red brick, glass, and steel works in a new found harmony as the new and old complement one another. The brick stands above the reflecting pools, symbolizing how the original Washington School endured and prevailed over the flooding that has plagued the school and the surrounding community. The design proposal responds to the call to revive the Washington School from neglect and abandonment and share its legacy of endurance and adaptability through the symbolism of reflecting pools and the permanence of a new steel structure and the old brick facades.

Folk Music Interpretive Center Fall 2022 Jerry Stivers, RA As the age of technology continues to grow, it is more important than ever to acknowledge the importance of defining gathering places that are woven into the cultural fabric of a location’s identity. Lake Arcadia in Edmond, Oklahoma is one such place with influences from its rich traditions of folk music, outdoor recreational opportunities established by the site, and the location near historic Route 66. The Folk Music interpretive center project explores how creating a gathering space curated by location, materiality, and history can serve as a renaissance for its forgotten traditions.

This project involved working with a team and individually to research, plan, design, and execute three buildings that sit lakeside of Lake Arcadia. The design shown is the folk music interpretive center which was designed individually with an emphasis on materiality, circulation, sunlight, and connection to nature.

sväva: chair Spring 2023 Paolo Sanza Through the challenge of designing the oridnary to the desire to create the extraordinary, the sväva chair was born. By studying the application of an idea called Tensegrety, designers, Ian Strickland and Nick Morey, were able to create a chair that was not held up on the typical wooden chair with 4 wooden legs but a chair that was held up by the weight of the user that was using the chair. This project provided the opportunity to expand the possiblities of what was thought of in the tradional studio setting and create a piece of art that shines for the minute details that create this chair. sväva seeks to break free from the standard design of chairs in today’s world. By applying the properties of tensegrity on a full-scale design, this chair offers a floating, weightless feeling. The designers desired to create a piece of furniture that captured attention and created intrigue. The delicate balance created by the tensegrity accomplishes this goal perfectly.

Various models, both physical and digital, aided in this design process by showing both the strengths and weaknesses of the design.

Creative Commons Fall 2023 Awilda Rodriguez Partner: Christian Brack Located in the heart of Rome on the cusp of the historic Jewish Ghetto, the Creative Commons provides an opportunity for university students to gain a deeper understanding of the context they are visiting. Highlighting the use of steel to create enticing spaces illustrates the strength and dynamism associated with the simple building material. As the Jewish community in Rome has persisted through time and tribulation, the striking appearance of the steel wedge burst through the urban context generating new perspectives of the existing cultural landscape.

The function of the structure is a library, but optimized by creative intervention. These interventions seek to diffuse knowledge in a way that is more relevant to its user than a wide-open space filled with written knowledge. By implementing Creative Studios, Makerspaces, and Roof Gardens, post-secondary students are presented with avenues to create, innovate, perform, and learn from each other. The facility’s location near the Jewish Ghetto in Rome allows students to interact with one another and the local culture during their time abroad.

The site does not allow for significant sprawl at ground level, which mandates vertical exploration to achieve wide open spaces. Using proposed air rights over the Lucio Renzo Levi School, the project proposal cantilevers over the threshold to establish a partnership with the neighboring building. To accomplish this structural feat, the highest floor employs a Warren Box Truss system, which is exposed to the open air allowing its contribution to be felt from within and from the street.

Within the ground plane, steel provides opportunities for sweeping spans which allow light to flow with the creativity embodied by the spaces it services. Creative Commons demonstrates the potential for steel to help society gain a new perspective of the world around us. Through its focus on education, expression, and interaction, this structure serves to inspire innovation, understanding, and how those concepts can be enriched together.
